Reference file in os x .app folder

I'm looking to reference a file inside the OS X .app folder.  I have a path constant inside a vi, and after building a .app, I would like this path to point inside the .app folder (kind of like the OS X @executable_path or @loader_path).  Is this possible?  In other words, I would like to pile everything (all outside references) into the .app folder, to make it drag and drop installable.
Thank  you!!!

If I understand what you asking, I would take a look at the Current VI's Path VI located in the Functions palette under Programming >> File I/O >> File Constants.  This would return the entire file path which should be something like "...somefolder:myapp.app:thisVI.vi" which you could then use to reference other files in the .app.  This article shows another method that you may be able to use (note: it is geared towards Windows, but should still apply).

• Can Lightroom references files in a network folder? And can multiple people all share a Lightroom catalog?

I would like to use Lightroom 5 at work to organize and manage photos. There are 10 people that consistently access the photos and videos. All of the photos and videos are on a network folder/drive. Is it possible for all 10 people to have a copy of Lightroom on their computers and then have a single catalog that all of the computers references? I guess the first question is whether Lightroom can references files on a network folder (if not than my first question isn't really relevant). If it is possible, what happens if two people (or more) have Lightroom open at the same time? Does that cause problems with the database? Please let me know if there is some way to make this work. Thanks..

Photos can be stored on Network Drives.
Catalog files cannot be stored on Network drives, and there is no way to allow multi-user access.
If you need multi-user access, you might want to consider software that allows multi-user access, such as Daminion. (Note: I am not endorsing Daminion, as I have never used it. I simply state that it claims to have a feature you are asking about)

default keyboards folder in illustrator CC not showing- no .kys file in apps folder, The keyboard shorcuts in Illustrator -Edit-shorcuts, don't show default shortcuts either...should I reinstall Illustrator CC?

If you are on a Mac, then the default keys should be in Adobe Illustrator CSX/Presets/en_US/Keyboard Shortcuts. If it's not there then a reinstall would be in order possibly running the cleaner tool in between.

• Dropping files to fullscreen apps through mission control results in app folder opening and in some sort of task switching madness

In Snow Leopard I got used to attach documents in mails by dragging and dropping files from the desktop to the message window. To do so  I used active corners (spaces, exposé). Now, with Mission Control in Lion I've tried to keep that workflow but this leads me to an awkward problem. To reproduce it in my computer I do the following:
Pick up a file from the desktop --> drag it to lower right corner (opens mission control) --> drag it to full screen mail space, press space to switch (applications folder opens inside mission control), and a lot of apps too (those the cursor hovered).
At the same time, mail full screen window opens (as waiting time selected in finder preferences for triggering is short), then Lion turns crazy entering in some sort of spasmodic task switching mode, which lasts after I find some clear space to drag the file back in the desktop.
Did any other user  experience something similar? Is there something I could do to help to fix the problem?
Thanks for you answers.
[Edit: Ok, so I started trying with other apps and it turns that every time I drag and drop any file to a fullscreen app in mission control and use the space key to open it, I get a similar behavior. I did it in Scrivener and it resulted in photoshop and itunes opening,  Scrivener vanished and but left an empty (like dashboard's) desktop.]

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
>>Running bootcamped Win7, yes power consumption is more, a lot more,....indications are no.
Sorry, can you clarify on this one - do you mean the power consumption is more DURING the use of Windows, or ALL of the time (even when using the Mac as normal with OSX).... also what did you mean by indications?
>>From the parameters of what you say your use would be, Id recommend the I5 with 8gig of ram. the 12 hour >>batt. life is only rated for the 13" on the I5, ....not the I7.
Sounds like my first guess was about right - and good point about the battery life - as that is something that's quite important to me!
>>The "switch" is extremely easy. Ive seen grandmothers switch to a MAC and have its 'everyday use' >>conquered in under a week. So, you should have no worries, its extremely user friendly, no worries of virus, >>etc.
Glad to hear I've done more research and already seen a few features I can see myself preferring a lot more to the Windows system!

Nah, I don't associate size with performance - especially these days, everything is getting smaller. My concerns are really just about whether to upgrade for extra performance, and using the OS - once I have those nailed I am pretty cofident the hardware will perform well.
>>Additionally the AIR is the only Mac that has 802AC wifi, new Haswell cool-running processor, and extremely >>long 12 Hr. batt life on the I5 13" configuration.
Yeah that battery life is one of the big sellers

• Using Reference Files - Aperture Library still larger than file storage

Still new to Aperture, and so far LOVE the metadata tagging functionality, but am troubled by the huge size of the Aperture library. Here's my stats so far, after a couple of days of importing, with no image management done so far other than assigning some metadata...
# photos managed as reference files=1175
Size of folder where reference files are stored=883MB
Size of Aperture library (.aplibrary)=1.44GB
My expectation would be that the ratio of Aperture library to reference file folder would be about 1/10. But 1.6/1 seems way out of whack. I selected all photos within Aperture and then selected "Manage Reference Files..." and all 1175 file references showed up. On that basis, I'm pretty confident that the jpegs aren't being copied into the Aperture library. But I cannot explain why the library continues to be 1.5+ times as large as the reference file folder.
This seems to defeat the purpose of keeping reference files external from Aperture.
Am I missing something, or is this to be expected? If these ratios hold, then it seems if I end up managing 10GB of photos I will incur another 15-16GB of storage requirement just for Aperture to do its thing.
What is Aperture doing with all that hard drive storage space?

By default, Aperture creates previews of all of your images. A preview is little more than a JPEG copy of the original. The size of these are determined by the settings in Aperture's preferences. When you're dealing with RAW images, the size of the previews are significantly smaller than the master image, but if you're working with JPEGs, then the previews can balloon the library to as large (large when you add up the thumbnails and duplicates) as the referenced files.
You can reduce the size of the previews, or delete them and turn them off all together if you're not sharing your photos with other iLife & iWork apps from Aperture. There are some other reasons you may find them beneficial, and this article will help you determine if they are right for you:

• Find and replace with multiple files and with a watch folder

I am trying to create a watch folder that uses red_menace script to:

When you use the open or adding folder items to handlers, you need to add the parameters for the file items passed to them.

• New to Aperture - Library vs Reference files

I'm coming to Aperture from Picasa, which replicated and managed my folder structure as it appeared on my hard-disc, which was nice.
Am I better off importing images into my Aperture Library, or managing the folder structure how I want and just having Aperture work with the reference files?
I'm not a pro-photographer, just a pretty basic user, so will not have loads of large raw image files. What's the benefit of using the Library over using Reference files? I've tried Google-ing but everything I've found just addresses folder/project management within Aperture.
If I use the reference option, can Aperture manage my photos on my hard-drive in the same way Picasa could (ie if I moved a photo from one folder to another in Picasa, it also moved on my drive)
Thanks

Hi TxH,
Welcome to the user-supported Aperture discussion group.
I'm coming to Aperture from Picasa, which replicated and managed my folder structure as it appeared on my hard-disc, which was nice.
If you use Aperture for even a little while, you'll realize that the structure of your photos in your hard drive is not as important as how you organize them in Aperture, especially when you start making albums, which merely contain a pointer to the image in your library. You can have a picture in many albums, but your library (and therefore hard drive) only contains it once.
Am I better off importing images into my Aperture Library, or managing the folder structure how I want and just having Aperture work with the reference files?
That's a matter of opinion. Some people are very opinionated that using referenced files is the only way to go, some are opinionated the other way. Sometimes there really is a better solution for you depending on what you are doing.
What's the benefit of using the Library over using Reference files? I
You will find loads of conversation if you search this discussion group for "managed" and "referenced".
You will always have a library. Your managed pictures will live in the library and you won't have direct access to them through Finder (and you should not want direct access to them for the most part). Your referenced pictures live wherever you tell Aperture to take them from, but the bookkeeping parts of the Aperture library/database are still stored in the Aperture library package.
Benefits of managed include: you don't worry about where the files are; Aperture backs them up if you use its vaults; they are always with you.
Benefits of referenced include: you know exactly where the files are; your Aperture library is significantly smaller than if all your photos were in the library; you can find them with Finder if that's important to you (and a lot of people think it's important to them but then realize they only think that because they're really not using Aperture to its full potential).
If I use the reference option, can Aperture manage my photos on my hard-drive in the same way Picasa could (ie if I moved a photo from one folder to another in Picasa, it also moved on my drive)
Yes. I've never used Picasa, but Aperture allows you to "relocate" your photos in order to manage their external directory structure. You can also choose to "relocate" a managed master to make it referenced.

• Move Mobile Apps Folder To External Drive?

Hi guys,
I've got a MacBook Pro running Lion with all the latest software / updates.  This has become my secondary machine (since buying a lovely 27" iMac), and I'm using iTunes Match to keep both the MacBook Pro and iMac's iTunes libraries in sync.
Now that I sync my iPhone and iPad to the iMac, I don't have much need for the Mobile Apps folder on my MacBook Pro.  I have a lot of apps, so my Mobile Apps folder is ~50 gigs, and it's suddenly one of the larger items on the MacBook Pro's drive.  Would it be possible to relocate this folder to my external drive for the MacBook Pro?  I found an older suggestion (to move the Mobile Apps folder, and create a shortcut in the iTunes folder pointing back to me new location), but this didn't work at all.
Is this do-able?  As as alternate, can I just delete all the Apps from my MacBook Pro's iTunes library (from within the app) without screwing up the syncing or (via iTunes Match) inadvertantly deleting them all from the iMac as well?
Thanks!

After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu.
You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed.
When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

were taken with my Iphone on 4.3.3.
Please help as we have no itunes music in Israel, only apps and i cant copy any of my old music from my computer

If it helps, i am using a pc with 32 bit windows 7.

The title of my initial post is a bit misleading. I already took a chance deleting one of the iPhones, hoping if I deleted the wrong one, I can still reauthorize it (all with the same Apple ID acct, so not subject to 90-day waiting period, right?) The iTunes database just updated itself, and it says I have 4 "devices" "in the Cloud", but 5 "computers" associated w my account. How can I find out what computers are associated? Isn't there a list I can see? I dont have a clue what computers they might be. If I use the  "Deauthorize All" option, is it a pain to add them all back in. I assume I would have to log in from each computer to reauthorize each one. Would I have to be running the newest OS or version of iTunes to reauthorize? I think I have a PowerBook G4 Titanium with an older OS and iTunes. I'd like to keep that authorized, if possible.

• Office 2013 applications crash when opening/saving files in OneDrive for Business folder

My setup:
Windows 7 64-bit
Office 2013 Professional
OneDrive for Business (connected to Office 365)
Issue Description:
Example 1:
1.  I create a file in OneDrive for Business using the appropriate web app (Excel web app, for example).
2.  I edit the file in the web app, I save the file in my OneDrive for Business
3.  I sync OneDrive for Business with it's local folder
4.  Now I open the folder in Windows Explorer and double-click the Excel file
5.  Excel splash screen shows up for a bit, and then Excel crashes
Example 2:
1.  I open Word on my Windows 7 laptop
2.  I start from a blank document and create some content in the document
3.  I use the Save As option under the File menu to save the file to my local OneDrive for Business folder
4.  As soon as I click the Save button on the dialog, Word crashes
The same happens with all the Office applications.
Important Note:
If I run the above examples with Excel/Word in SAFE mode, there is absolutely no issue.
What have I done so far?
1.  I have made sure that the DisplayLink driver is the latest version from the manufacturer
2.  There is no bluetooth send-to add-in in any of the Office applications
3.  No add-ins are enabled in any of the Office applications (not sure if there are "stealth" ones that are not visible in the Options/Add-Ins dialog?)
Any assistance with this would be much appreciated.
JeHarry

Hi JeHarry,
Because I didn't have Windows 7, I did a test with Windows 8.1 based on your description. However, in my testing, everything worked well.
Please repair your Office under Control Panel, compare the result.
This forum is for SharePoint On-premise, as your issue is about Office 365, I suggest you create a new thread on Office 365 forum, more experts will assist you with Office 365.

• Unable to Move Apple Apps in App Folder

I had to replace a failing disk in my computer since it's SMART "failing" status made Lion refuse to install. I did a clean install of OS X Lion on my Unibody MBP13" (2009) with a new Hard Drive about a week ago. I then migrated all my Apps, Settings and Files to the new drive from the failing drive. All data was transferred fine.
I then went in to move the Apple Apps from the Applications folder to their proper subFolder (in the same Applications Folder) I had transferred over, and th Finder refused to move them. Instead it simply made a copy. So suddenly I had 2 of the same application, and my Apps folder was still messed up. So, I tried to se if they were locked, but they weren't. Then I noticed an entry in the Sharing & Permissions if each Apps Information window that the Access was cusotmized for Everyone. I've never seen this entry before Lion. It simple lists Users and Groups that have access to the file:

I then went into the terminal to see if I could see more about the the permissions:

As you can see (if the images are visible) is that the permissions for the 3 Apps apps Dictionary, DVD Player and FaceTime are "drwxr-xr-x+" The "+" is mysterious. It means that there's an ACL file somewhere in the system that is locking it to the folder.
I would like to know: where that ACL is on my system, so I can edit it and fix this problem. Is it this one?:

It's in the System>Library>PrivateFrameworks>KerberosHelper.framework>Helpers>lkdc_acl
If it is I can't edit it because it an executable.
Does anyone know how get "under the hood" of the UNIX subsystem and pull up the right files so I can return my workflow to full speed?
For your information: I have well over 200 Applications on my computer, many of these are little programs that do things from audio editing to financial planning. I've found it much easier to navigate my Apps folder by breaking up Apps into categories: 3D, Audio, Business, DAs, Games, Graphics, Internet, Utilities, Video and WebProduction. And I occassional have a few others if I need to do something new. Using Launchpad to keep my apps organized is not a solution, because it lacks the ability to see all the apps on one screen and drag things quickly ot the right place, and there are no preferences for it that I have found. Having Apps that are bound to the Apps folder is incredibly stupid, and a very Microsoft Windows kind of "solution" to a problem that did not exist.
Apple used to allow anyone with Admin privs move apps up until OS 10.7. Why did they take it away? Clearly someone at Apple was aware of the problem when they created the Utilities folder. I had been doing application organizations like this since the time of 20MB Hard Drives being hundreds of dollars. Advanced Users do not need training wheels in the Finder.

You do not seem to understand. Having so many applications bolted to my Apps folder is unacceptable.
I am not a novice user who needs Apple to update my Apps or hold my hand. I used 10.5 and 10.6 for years and app updates worked fine. All you have to do after the update ids move the App to its proper folder.
Apple's Finder is able to intelligently keep track of Apps when they move. In fact, I know they can do it, and that someone decided not to enable the Software Updater to handle a dynamic path is idiotic at best.

• Can you export a Quick Time REFERENCE file from Final Cut Pro X?

Used to be in FCP-7, you could export your timeline and at the bottom of the Export dialog box, there was a check box where you could check "Make the movie self-contained," which would export a full Quick Time .mov file, or you could UNCHECK that box and FCP would export a Quick Time REFERENCE file (referencing the source media used within the timeline), which you could then bring in to any one of a number of different encoding apps.
I prefer to use Sorenson Squeeze to do my encoding, as it's much, much faster than Compressor and has infinitely more format options (Flash, Windows Media, Real, etc., etc.).
But now, I don't see a way to export a Quick Time Reference file from the Final Cut Pro timeline, er, uh, storyline, er, uh, project.
Anybody know if there's a way to export a Quick Time REFERENCE file (not a full Quick Time .mov)?

I do the same thing with Final Cut Express, actually.  Only I then open the reference file up in QuickTime Pro and re-export it to an h.264 mp4.  I can do that multiple times in the background vs. getting caught up in Final Cut's pathetically non-threaded user interface when it's saving/exporting.
I was going to ask the exact same question here, but you beat me to it.  And so far it sounds like the answer is "no" ... :-(

• ITunes freezes when selecting "Add file to library" or "Add folder....

Not had a problem before and everything worked fine.
But this morning if I select "Add file to library" or "Add folder to library" nothing happens and itunes just freezes.
I can play music already in the library.
Any ideas?

I'm having a similar problem. If I select the Add to Library option, the dialog box will open and then hang. I get the spinning wheel of death and nothing happens. I have to force quit and try again. It seems to have something to do with the sidebar menu list and I've noticed a slowing in other apps as it loads the sidebar in these dialog boxes.

• Firefox won't insall into my applications folder. Says can't install because libsmime3.dylib is in use. I am running Mac Os 10.6.7 on a Macbook Pro. I can run firefox okay from the disk image but just won't install into the apps folder.

My system is a Macbook Pro running Mac Os 10.6.7 with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram. The upgrade downloads fine, but when I try to drag the firefox image onto my appication folder, I get a dialogue box that says...Cannot install application because "libsmime3.dylib" is in use. I can run Firefox fine from the disk image.

Nope---didn't work. I've owned Macs for about 12 years so although I am brain dead on some things, I do have a working knowledge on most things. I only say that to say this--I did try holding down the mouse and choosing empty trash. It asks if I want to permanently delete what's in there. I say yes--and then I get the same identical message again-----'The operation can't be completed because the item "Firefox 8.0.1.dmg" is in use I can then click stop, or continue.' So apparently that complains the same way it does if I click it up on the menu :)))
As for item owned by---that's not an issue and isn't coming up. User is not a problem either as I am the only user on this system. There is only ONE file in my trash at the moment at that is this dmg file. Nothing Mac. Nothing owned by anyone other than Firefox. The problem seems to be that the dmg file and the original 4.0 FF file are working in tandem with each other--even though I have already drug the new 8.0 globe into the Apps folder and it updated the FF app with the new stuff. If I could force the dmg file to go away, I would do so, but at every turn the system is telling me it can't be done because it seems to think that dmg file is in use---even though everything is shut down and/or ejected. Hey--I'm getting ready to head out and won't be back till evening. I'll check back in this evening. Thank you again for your help.
