Referencing cells in other numbers spreadsheet files

A couple of questions:
1)I have two sheets (Sheet A and Sheet b) in the same file. Both sheets have a single table named Table 1 in them. I can double tap on a cell in Sheet A Table 1, tap on the equal sign in the entry box. I can then go to Sheet B Table 1 and double tap on a cell. Numbers inserts a reference of Sheet B::Table 1::Col Row. I can now change the value in Sheet B and Sheet A updates automatically. My question is can I type in the reference to the cell in Sheet B and not do all the finger tapping?
2)Can I type in a reference to another cell in a table on a sheet in another Numbers file located on my iPad. If not is there a way to tap to the reference?

I have had no luck typing in any formulas in iPad numbers directly. I can do it using the desktop version, but not the iPad. I found I had to do all the finger tapping the op mentions. Even to type simple formulas that I know how to do by heart, I had to search the function list and select the item from the list.
If I use the keyboard that comes up within the equation editor it places everything in quotes and sees it as text. Which doesn't invert to the actual equation. If I use the text input and type an equal sign with the equation it still sees it only as text.
If you know how to do the typing thing, please give us more in depth instructions on how to do this in numbers for iPad as that would be beneficial to a degree you annotate fathom.
Referencing the other file thing doesn't work in desktop at all, so thi is only reefing to how to get to type in my formuas by hand in. Single file, referring to a single file in iPad numbers.

I'm a car dealer and I created the bill of sale for my dealership in a Numbers spread sheet. I want to be able to use my iPad mini w retina for customers to sign directly on my iPad then print out the BoS with signatures on it so I can make transactions easier for my customers in case I have to meet them somewhere instead of my office. Then I would have the ability to send them another copy if they happen to lose theirs without digging thru my files to find the hard copy and scan and send it to them.

How do I outline a single cell in a numbers spreadsheet

I am trying to emphasise the borders of a single cell in a numbers spreadsheet; I follow all the instructions I can find in mac help, they just don't make any difference. I may be ancient, but I can usually suss things out in time; this baffles me. However, I do realize I may have blundered into the wrong type of help forum here.

To place borders around a cell in Numbers -
Make sure the cell has been selected, i.e. is the active cell.
Click the Inspector tool in the Toolbar -
Then click the Table inspector icon in the Inspector window's toolbar -
In that screen, look down to the section "Cell Borders"...
Click the button for full border (arrow in pic above) -
Adjust the color of the border as needed for visibility (oval in pic above) -
And then you may need to adjust the line weight (thickness) to get it visible on-screen. To do that, click the dropmenu in that section showing "Thin" and select the next item underneath "thin" in the menu. This will make the item just to the right of that menu active - you can then use the arrow-buttons to make the line weight thicker. Although the thinnest setting (0.25 pt) may print okay, on some screens it just doesn't show - especially of the border color has not been set to a hard black. Making it thicker can help in viewing it on-screen.

Referencing tables in another Numbers '09 file

Is there a way to reference table in another Numbers file. For example using the VLOOKUP formula to bring data from another Numbers file into my current table. I was wondering if you have to have that table in the same Numbers file. My Tables are in the thousands and and have 3 alphabets of columns and it would be difficult to fit 2 of those onto my screen in the same Numbers file.

Not from another file, only from within the same document. Numbers does not support external links to other spreadsheet files.

I do it by typing "=" then use the mouse to navigate to the correct sheet & cell. You could type it your self but you have to know how many spaces separate the Sheet Name, etc...

How do I link to information in cells within other Numbers documents?

I am trying to simplify my staff wages. I have a Numbers document with 12 sheets (months) each with one table showing staff, pay deductions etc.
I want to have 6 other documents (one for each member of staff); each of which will have 12 sheets (months). These will house 12 identical payslips, one for each month. I need each cell to auto-fill from the associated cell in the overview Numbers document.
I created this in Excel but when I imported it, Numbers is happy with the overview document but the not the formulae importing figures from other the document.
I'm sure I should be able to do this, but I ain't wiz enough.
I hope I've managed to convey what I'm trying to do, and I hope someone can help me.

There is no link between two Numbers documents.
The easy workaround is to create new sheets dedicated to what is, at this time, stored in other documents.
And of course,
_Go to "Provide Numbers Feedback" in the "Numbers" menu_, explain politely that you wish to be able to insert links between document.
Then, cross your fingers, and wait _at least_ for iWork'11

How do I add email address to a cell in a Numbers spreadsheet without the appearance automatically changing color and underlining? In Excel, I would add an apostrophe at the beginning which would keep this from happening.

How do I add email addresses in a column without them automatically converting to another color with underscores. I want the text to remain text.

Uncheck the indicated checkbox.

Referencing cells in other tables

I am trying to build an application that requires formulas that need to reference cells in another table. Is this possible. If not is there a way to have rows in a table hidden so that only the summary totals are showing. So far it appears neither can be done.

We have had similar questions in the past, and no one has been able to reference one table from another.
To hide a row is not easy either. The best thing seems to be to set the colours of both text and borders to white (or anyhow the background of the page) or 0% opacity, even though the row still takes up space.

Why can't I edit this Numbers spreadsheet?

I have a Numbers spreadsheet which I created on my Mac. My problem is that when I open it, it will not allow me to make any edits. I can see all the rows, columns, etc. including the content of each cell.... but I cannot select any of these cells.
All of the header items such as Function, Table, etc., are present but they are dimmed and I'm unable to select them.
I have other Numbers spreadsheets which allow me to edit just fine. My problem is with this one particular spreadsheet.
Is there some type of setting that I have unknowingly set whch has locked this particulare spreadsheet?
Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks for your suggestion. It did not fix my problem but I continued poking around and fortunately I discovered this solution:
File > Export to> Numbers '09
The new file opened ans I was asked if I wanted to upgrade it.
I answered YES and I now have a fully funtional spreadsheet.

This Automator Service (Dropbox download) should do the job, eliminating the need for a trip to TextEdit, etc.
The one-time installation is simple: just doubleclick the .workflow package. You may have to click "Download Anyway" in System Preferences > Privacy & Security.
To use, in Finder select the csv file, rightclick, and in Services in the contextual menu select CSV to Tabs on Clipboard. Choose the delimiter when prompted (usually it's a comma but there are other choices). When the "ready to paste" notification appears a few seconds later, click once in a Numbers cell and command-v to paste the data. (If needed Numbers will automatically expand the table to accommodate the data.)
To remove or rename the Service, in Finder hold down the option key and in the menu Go > Library > Services.

Conditional hyperlinks to cells in Numbers spreadsheet

I'm working on a project that consists of multiple spreadsheets for Excel, LibreOffice Calc and Numbers. The ones for Calc and Numbers are based on the Excel one because I have the biggest experience in it. So one of the main functions that I use is HYPERLINK, which makes hyperlinks to the cells of the spreadsheet, and I found out that it won't work as expected in Numbers because the cell linking is not provided by this function here. Moreover, I use HYPERLINK to create conditional hyperlinks, e. g. =IF(A1=1;HYPERLINK("#C29";"Example");"") is a hyperlink only if A1 is 1 - that means that a static hyperlink can't solve my problem.
So is there any way to create a conditional hyperlink to any other cell in the same spreadsheet in Numbers?

But I can open the file by selecting the cell with the "browser address" (file:///...) and running the script below.
When you have docs saved by Preview in iCloud what does the "browser address" for those look like?

Linking cells between various Numbers files?

Dear all: I have been looking for a way to bring the values from various cells in different Numbers files to another Numbers file. I am doing this to create a summary file for others. Is this possible or do I have to create the different sheets in the same file and then link them that way by creating one bigger Numbers file.

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to respond. I guess what can be done in excel with regard to linking content from different files cannot be achieved in Numbers. That's too bad. So far, I am using Numbers sporadically when composing spreadsheets that are not so complicated and integrated and where I want a better "look" to the final outcome. Thanks again.

Thank you for this response. I have tried this but when I start enterring $ amounts some, such as $6.00, go in OK others such as $4.00 appear as a date ie 4 Oct 12.
