Reinstall of OS 10.5 on an early intel Macbook pro

I've recently purchased from a university an older intel macbook pro that has been completely wiped. In order to do anything I need to install OS 10.5,but cannot find it anywhere. The computer asks if I'd lioke to reinstall lion but I cannot until I install leopard. Where can I get it?

I wanted to end up with Lion 10.7.5 which apparently is the newest OS that this computer could handle. I would have had to load leopard, then snow leopard, then lion, according to the messages that I was getting. Anyway, I brought the unit in to my local repair joint and found that lion was still on the hard drive though the university had wiped the memory. So I had him dial it in. First time that I couldn't figure things out and needed help, but hey I'm a plant nerd not a computer nerd.
Thanks, Bob

    Dear Friends,
Hi, I bought a refurbished Macbook 4,1 at present it is running Lion 10.7.5( although it is an older machine circa 2008) I would like to transfer everything from my old machine( early intel Macbook Pro) to the newer machine. My older machine runs Mac OS x 10.6.8 and that allows me run some very old software. Should I make a time machine back up?and restore from that or use Carbon Copy Cloner? to transfer everything, the system, applications and data.
    Thanks for your help
    -Walt

    Here you go:
Connect the two using a Firewire cable. Boot the newer machine in Target Disk Mode. Boot the older one normally. The disk for the newer machine will appear on the older machines's Desktop.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select newer machine's hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      3. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      4. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      5. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the newer machine's drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • Unpredictable reboots on my early 2008 Macbook Pro with Mavericks

    Hello,
    My situation:
    1) First problem I encountered was kernel panic on startup. I fixed it fixed by replacing new AppleSMC.kext by older one from 10.8.* version I suppose  (i used KextWizard).
    2) Time after time MacBook restarts and then shows white screen with a message "your computer restarted because of a problem" (or something very similar). I'm able to start system after Cmd+Option+P+R and safe mode.
    3) If I don't use the way described in point 2, I receive kernel panics with reboot (screenshots made in verbose boot mode attached).
Any help will be highly appreciated.

Having "performed all of the iSight Troubleshooting", you have already reinstalled OS X, Firefox, and Chrome, updated all of them to the latest versions, uninstalled all third-party mirroring software, and tested in more than one OS X login user account.
If you now restart your Mac and launch only Photo Booth, does not the PB window now display the image your camera is viewing?
If the answer is no, even for the simple Photo Booth app, we are left wondering how scratch.mit.edu (a Flash-based web site) can find a working camera when using the Chrome browser.
If the answer is still no, my first suggestion would be to click the "Check Now" button in your  > System Preferences... > Flash > Advanced menu command.  If there is a later update, apply it, and test your camera again using Apple's iSight troubleshooting suggestions.
If you were already using the current Flash version, or if updating it does not change any troubleshooting results, I would try reinstalling OS X one more time in case you had a bad download or install on your previous try.  Then test again with Apple's troubleshooting suggestions.

    Thanks!

    Hi,
I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro, which I purchased brand new; it's just over one year old.  Yesterday the laptop held a charge no problem for 6 hours or more.  Today, when I disconnect it from the charger it goes to sleep.  When I plug it back in and press the power button it wakes up, and I can use it.
This cannot be a battery issue, since it was holding a charge without trouble yesterday.  Does this appear to be a serious issue?  My one year warranty expired 2 months ago yesterday, and I had forgot to purchase AppleCare.  Sigh.  It almost seems like surgically-planned obsolecense or punishment for not purchasing AppleCare.
I would immensely appreciate any help/suggestions on this.
    Thanks.

    OK, in that case:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Upgrading to Lion or Mountain Lion will not solve the problem.

  • Early 2011 MacBook Pro shutting off all by itself

Early 2011 MacBook Pro 11" shutting off all by itself recently.
I had the logic board replaced 11 months ago because it started to shut off more and more until it refused to boot up again.
Now I am going through the same problem. Is this common?

  • Early 2008 MacBook Pro - no chime, no video, sleep light solid

Have here an Early 2008 MacBook Pro, 15", 2.5GHz. It's in good physical shape... shows no signs of spillage, being dropped or mishandled, etc. I know virtually nothing of its history.
The machine will charge the battery. When I attempt to turn it on, I hear the fans and drives do their thing - but I get no video (internal or external, not even the backlight) and no chimes or tones. The sleep indicator light turns on and stays on, solid white.
Tried the SMC reset proceedure outlined here (remove battery, hold power key 5secs, reinstall battery and try again) - no effect.
My gut reaction is bad logic board, but wanted to check here before giving up on it. Anything I might be missing?

I've worked extensively with the older PPC (and, dare I go back so far, 68K) machines, just not up on all the common issues and techniques for the Intel-based Macs. This seems hardware-y to me, just want to make sure I'm not missing something relatively simple.
Pressing D (or any other key/s) doesn't have any effect, as the machine isn't making it that far into the boot process.
EDIT: the message above was posted as I was typing.
I was afraid it could be that... heard it to be a common thing, but never seen one do it in person. Too bad the warranty extension just ended a month ago, else I would have had more motivation to make the trek to the Genius Bar.
My strong suspicion that it's a logic board issue, and that I've got myself a fancy aluminum paperweight, is getting stronger.

  • When I boot my early 2011 macbook pro it is now very slow and pull us the (Command R) window... Pictures Included.

I took my Early 2011 MacBook Pro into the local apple store and they ran their GPU test, and my Mac actually passed it.  The Apple employee then ran a hardware test and the logic board, battery, and optical drive showed problems.  The Genius told me about their flat rate $310 repair deal, and I am going to take advantage of it...
Today when I am able to boot up my mac it loads very slow (showing a beachball during start up) and then the window we get when pressing Command R shows up asking me to press enter for English, and then after that it shows options like Disk Utility, Restore from Time Machine backup, Reinstall OS X, and Get online help options...
I erased my drive (Crucial SSD) and restored from Time Machine backup, and I am still having this issue...  Please help.

Kappy hi, thanks again.  I wiped the drive, reinstalled OS X, and transferred from Time Machine backup...  Seems to be working better somewhat.  I will just have to pay for flat rate repair for Apple to fix everything wrong, and hopefully it will perform like new...  Again thank you.

  • How can I connect my Early 2011" Macbook Pro 13" inch, with a generic Mini Display Port to HDMI connector, to a LG 32LD340 LCD TV, using Mountain Lion 10.8.2?

I have an Early 2011" macbook pro 13 inch (core i5 2.3ghz 4gb ram 320hdd) with Mountain Lion 10.8.2, and I want to connect it via Mini DP to HDMI connector, and a HDMI cable to a LCD TV LG 32LD340. When I had Lion OS, I had no problems at all.

If you have an external drive equal to or larger than your internal HD, clone your internal to it with either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Test the clone to make sure it's bootable. Then upgrade either one. Try it out first.

  • How can I connect my early 2008 MacBook Pro to a tv through HDMI?

I was wondering if there is a way to connect my early 2008 MacBook Pro to a tv using an HDMI port. My MacBook Pro has a DVI output. In the past I bought a DVI to VGA adapter and connected it to a TV that had a PC input that took VGA and a 3.5mm audio cable. I was wondering if anybody has found an adapter or cable that takes a DVI and 3.5 mm audio cord and has only an HDMI cord at the other end. I have a new TV that only has HDMI inputs and would like to be able to connect my laptop to it.

Since you have not identified exactly what MBP you have, but mention DVI, I suspect a cable such as this is what you will need.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/380694416929?lpid=82
Understand that 2009 MBPs and earlier do not support audio via DVI or minidisplay port.  You would have to tap the audio output port  with a cable such as this:
    http://http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=691009&Q=&is=REG&A =details
I am not endorsing these cable specifically, these are just examples that represent what connections that are required.
    Ciao.

  • Airplay mirroring on early 2011 macbook pro not mirroring

    First, here's what I have:
Early 2011 macbook pro (identifier 8,3) with 2.2 Intel Core i7 processor connected over Wifi on 2.4 Ghz channel.
    OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion
Apple TV 3 (fully up to date)
The stats I've read say airplay mirroring should work fine.  I can connect both machines just fine. I can stream movies just fine. I can send music just fine.  I just cannot mirror my desktop.  I have the icons, a connection is made, but all that shows is a blank screen. I've adjusted the resolutions with no luck.  I've shut down and rebooted both machines with no luck...
Any solutions or do I have to count my losses with Apple Airplay and spend more money on a 3rd party alternative (AirParrot)?

    Hi eoinodonnell,
The problem was resolved, but I have the worst answer... it just started working, and has remained reliable since.  I never found out exactly what fixed it, but I would try these things:
    1) Try a factory reset on the Apple TV, and make sure your Macbook pro has all the latest updates.
    2) Try to repair disk permissions (better to do it from disk utility from boot menu) and reboot your macbook.
    3) Backup your files and do a fresh install of OSX.
I know I performed all these tasks, and possibly more, but something along the way did fix the problem.
I hope something here works!  If so, please let me know what did it.

  • Early 2011 MacBook Pro incredibly slow after installing Mavericks

I'm really hoping someone can help me out. As per the subject line, I installed Mavericks on day one (and learned my lesson!).
Since installing Mavericks my MacBook Pro runs incredibly slow. If I open the Mail App and Safari - it almost grinds to a halt. I have the "Memory Clean" App which I now have to run constantly (it appears to help a little) and I try to only launch one app at a time where possible, but it's not really pratical.
As an aside, my MacBook ran really well with Mountain Lion, so there's little doubt to my mind that Mavericks is the culprit.
I'd be eternally grateful for any help & advice :-)
I spotted other people advise running EtreCheck, here are my results:

    CleanMyMac is probably your problem.
    CleanMyMac is crapware.
Crapware is anything that purports to "optimize",  "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac. These apps are unnecessary, poorly written, overpriced (if they were free, they'd still be overpriced), and harmful. The people who sell this stuff know this, but they keep selling it because people keep buying it. They can damage your OS and be difficult to uninstall.
I would try to uninstall it, but if that fails, you may have to erase your HD and do a clean install.

If you have an external drive equal to or larger than your internal HD, clone your internal to it with either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Test the clone to make sure it's bootable. Then upgrade either one. Try it out first.
