Remote Updating Software Applications

I'm building a Software Application that, at selected times, must check the lastest release version, and update itself if needed. Is there a simple interface or API for this functionality?
Thanks,
Jeremy

The Netbeans IDE does this on a regular basis (the checking bit) I'm not sure if the api is easily available(ie easy to take and reuse) but you could have a look at the source.

I'm unsure if the following dialog box I'm getting when updating an application after it's launched is legit or not:
Note: The variables in the image have my actual name.
When I cancel this dialog and then search for updates manually through Software Update, the application doesn't show as needing an update. Does this look/sound normal?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Thank you. I tried that and even gave it a few days to do its thing, but I still get the same results. Remote Desktop, HP Printer, Digital Camera all still appear in "Available Updates", but the same versions appear under "Updates Installed in the Last 30 Days". BTW, I had to manually install the Safari 8.0.4 update because it also wasn't updating.

    Hello:
Thank you for the update for remote access for desktops.
Personally, I do not want to give remote access to anyone but myself as privacy is my friend.  Can this remote desktop software still be for me personally unless I allow access and for my MAC lap top only?  What if I do not update? I do use this lap top in other countries.  compatibility issues with what?

Apple Remote Desktop is off be default. It has to be enabled for some one to be able to remotely connect to the computer. And then, you still have to have a user name and password on the computer to remotely connect with.
If you want to see if remote access has is enabled for Apple Remote Desktop; you can find the setting in, Apple Menu, System Prefrences, Sharing. If it's enabled, Remote Management or Screen Sharing will be checked.
Beucase Apple Remote Desktop Agent is part of the Mac Operating System; even if your not using it, Apple Software Updates will from time to time offer updates for ARD Agent. Software Updates can some times be stacked ontop of each other; so chosing not to install an update, can mean other updates you may want may not be offered. At least until you install the updates those updates require. Also software updates can improve the security of your computer.

Yes.  Apple > Software Update is only for Apple products.  For other products, you need to check with the people who made it.

The the account you used to "purchase" iPhoto is the Apple ID you used to set yoru couputer up with - log into th eApp store using that Apple ID and look under purchases - if you have not accepted the App yet then you will have to accept it first

  • Parental Controls Broken After Updating an Application

I'm using Parental Controls (remotely) under 10.5.4 to manage what applications can be opened in a small lab. This works well until I need to update an application on the lab computers. I'll use Firefox as an example, but this happens with all applications.
    - I have a version of Firefox on all lab computers (3.0) and Firefox is allowed under parental controls. Everything works.
    - I update Firefox to 3.0.1. (In this case, I simply overwrote the older version of firefox, but I get this problem when updating applications with installers.)
    - If I remotely look at the Parental Controls settings for the lab computer, I can see that Firefox is still allowed (checked)
    - Now, on the lab computer, I log into the managed account and try to open Firefox, I get a warning about the application not being on the allowed list.
    - I log out of the lab computer, and again, access the parental controls setting remotely. Now Firefox is Not Allowed (unchecked).
    - I check the box to allow Firefox
    - Now when I log into the managed account, the new version of Firefox opens.
Some fixex / workarounds I have tried:
    - After updating Firefox, I remotely accessed the parental controls settings and first disallowed (unchecked) Firefox, close parental controls, reopened it, and then allowed (checked) Firefox. When logged into the managed account, opening Firefox produced the not allowed error. When I return to the Parental Controls settings, Firefox is now Not Allowed (unchecked). Checking the box to allow Firefox fix the error.
    - I've tried restarting after updating Firefox and it did not work.
    My guess:
I assume that Leopard keeps a list of applications and versions installed on the computer. Parental Controls allows a specific combination and any update will break the parental controls. To allow this updated application to be opened, its old entry in the list must be updated to reflect the new version. The only way I have figured out how to do this, is to try and open the updated application and fail. Then I can finally allow the updated version.
Does anyone know of an automated or scritable way to do this. I have tried working with lsregister, but have not had any success. I need a way to force Leopard to reload / refresh its list of installed applications, with having a user logged into the console.
For a different solution, does if you can send a UNIX command to machine sitting on it login screen, that will cause the machine to login as a local console user. I could then send "open /path/to/updated app" and a logout to force the application list to be refreshed.
Many Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi! Did you ever receive any feedback on this issue?
I am interested since I have noticed the exact same frustration with Parental Controls since updating to 10.5.
While a very good idea, I think the parental controls, especially with respect to permissions about applications is utterly useless at the moment. It is completely stupid that I have to reset the permissions for applications each and every time I update an application. I have three children who use the computer and I don't want them using every bit of software on the eMac. They are naturally curious and will click on programs that can do damage without realizing is.
I have also turned off any parental controls regarding web browsing but my children still hit many sites that are blocked by Parental Controls. I do have a linux gateway that does the filtering quicker and better.
If anyone at Apple is listening ... please spend some time to fix this for the next update.
    Thank you.

  • Remote Update Manager - Acrobat Pro

    Hello everyone,
Please review this snippit from the Remote Update Manager (RUM) documentation.
Note: Remote Update Manager is meant only for a subsection of Adobe Desktop products. It can not be used for browser plug-ins such as Flash Player and for Adobe Reader, Acrobat Professional, and Adobe AIR application updates.
    I ask the question... WHY?
Why, at the very least isn't Acrobat Pro part of the Adobe Update Server Setup Tool (AUSST) and RUM configuration?
I've finally gotten my Adobe udate server working and created a Scheduled Task to run the incremental update everyday. Perfect.
Now I'm implementing the override files on my client machines and creating a Scheduled Tasks to run the RemoteUpdateManager so that my users (as well as myself) do not have to worry about updating the Adobe programs... BUT... one of the programs that we use quite a bit, Acrobat Pro, is not part of this automated update scenario.
So, I'm left still updating Acrobat manually which almost, but not quite, defeats the purpose of AUSST & RUM.
Can anyone from Adobe tell me whether there are plans to add Acrobat Pro to the automated updating procedure mentioned above?
    Please say yes.
I'm so close to being at the point where the Adobe updates are completely automated. Adding Acrobat Pro to the list would be like hitting a grand slam in the 9th inning to win the game.
    Thanks in advance.

Markus, thank you for the information.
First, If Acrobat is not a creative product then it shouldn't be offered in the CC collection of programs.
Second, Things being the way they are - Acrobat being deployable with the CC programs - it should be updated the same way as the CC programs. It would just make it nice and tidy and dare I say efficient.
I will check out the link to the tools. Great, more software to download, install and configure.

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You — not the previous owner — must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
    1. You don't own another Mac.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the previous owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    2. You do own another Mac.
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
Once booted in Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.

    3. Other issues
If you see a lock screen when trying to boot from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information.

  • Remote update manager and ausst

    Hello,
I try to set up automatic updates for all creative cloud applications in our company. The AUSST is already working and a web-directory exists, but there are still some problems I cannot solve yet.
    1. Does the remote udpate manager also use the AdobeUpdater.Overrides? If not, how can I use our internal AUSST Web Server for the remote updates?
    2. Which option in the Creative Cloud Packager creates the folder \ProgramData\Adobe\AAMUpdater\1.0\ ?
    3. Where does the Adobe Update Manager save the .overrides-file I chose in the Adobe Update Manager? Does this file also apply for the Remote Update Manager?
    4. Is there any way to change the extended configuration parameters for a package after the installation
    Thanks and regards,
    Tobias

    Hi Tobias,
Please find the answers outlined below.
    1. Does the remote update manager also use the AdobeUpdater.Overrides? If not, how can I use our internal AUSST Web Server for the remote updates?
Ans: Setup RUM with AUSST : Creative Cloud Help | Using Adobe Remote Update Manager
    2. Which option in the Creative Cloud Packager creates the folder \ProgramData\Adobe\AAMUpdater\1.0\ ?
Ans : Creative cloud packager doesn't create this folder. this is being created while deploying the update payloads.
    3. Where does the Adobe Update Manager save the .overrides-file I chose in the Adobe Update Manager? Does this file also apply for the Remote Update Manager?
Ans: Override.xml is being generated manually using Adobe update server setup tool. In case you install the package without setting up an update sever under package configuration, it generates AdobeUpdaterAdminPrefs.dat.
    4. Is there any way to change the extended configuration parameters for a package after the installation
Ans : Package configuration can't be changed once created once created.
    Hope this helps.
Let me know in case you would need any further clarification.
    Thanks,
    Ashish

  • Remote update service on sony ericsson G502 does not work

I have a Sony Ericsson G502.  The phone has a problem  which causes it to restart when I am on a call.  Sometimes it just restarts on its own.  I searched on the net and found that other people have also seen the same issue and I believe a software upgrade will fix the problem.
I dont have the usb cable of the phone so I cannot do the upgrade using the 'Update Service' software from the pc.  I tried doing a 'remote update service' from the phone in Menu-->Update Service-->Search for Update, but it just says that your phone is running the latest software.  The current software version on my phone is 1203-8254 R1FA031 080512.  Is this the latest software available?  I have bought the phone 2 years back (but used it sparingly), and I am not convinced that there is no update to this software.
Please suggest a way I can upgrade this phone?  I like the phone, but this restart problem makes the phone very unreliable for everyday use.   Kindly help.

Your best bet is to get a USB cable and update the software with SEUS on your PC.If, as the remote update service tells you, you already have the latest software, you can only re-install the software via PC anyway.Alternatively, you can perform a master reset on the phone and see if that fixes the problem.Hope this helps.

  • Remote Update Server setup

Using the AUSST tool to set up a remote update server on Windows Server 2012R2 which is IIS 8.5.
