To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it. The app was pre-installed, how do I get past this message?

The the account you used to "purchase" iPhoto is the Apple ID you used to set yoru couputer up with - log into th eApp store using that Apple ID and look under purchases - if you have not accepted the App yet then you will have to accept it first

Take a look at this ..  .Troubleshooting the Mac App Store
You have to update an app using the same ID as was used when it was purchased.   If a family member or friend downloaded the app originally, then you must use the same ID as they used.

  • Problem updating to Mavericks.  "To update this application sign in to the account you used to purchase it."

I attempted to update to Mavericks, but my MacBook Pro froze for more than an hour after the download.  I restarted the computer, and now when I try to update, I get the message:  "You have updates for other accounts.  To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it."
I do have other accounts, but I get the same message no matter which App Store account I have signed into.  How can I complete this update?

To update the application, you have to sign in to the Apple ID that it was purchased under.  If you purchased it with a friend's ID for example, you would need to sign in to their account so you can update the app.

Here is the link to the Mac App Store (MAS) forum:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_app_store/using_mac_apple_store
You might want to browse or search through that one and then create a new post there if you can't find an answer; I've heard of posts detailing problems with iLife applications if you either buy a used Mac or wipe/reinstall your OS. I'm not knowledgeable enough about that subject, but somebody there should be.

I am being prompted to update iPhoto and iMovie, but getting the message: "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it."  These came already loaded on my laptop, and my email has not changed.  Any ideas or work-arounds?

Has your Apple ID changed, that's the one that matters.
You need to sign in under the account that purchased these apps (did you buy this Mac new)

  • Error message, "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it."

I recently had a HDD crash and need to reinstall my App Store software purchases except I now recieve this message when I attemp to redownload software.
"To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it."
Which leaves me feeling incredulous because I logged into the App Store using the same account it claims I need to use to download my software purchases?
Any suggestions or solutions people can offer would be most helpful.

There are some tips linked to this Discussion Thread that might help you out. Especially with re-downloading iLife Apps onto Lion. But in your case it may also apply as your updates are being provided through the App Store as well:

is the garageband, iPhoto,iMovie update free, as I have purchase mac book pro last december, I am unable to update it from app store. When I try to do so it says "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it"
I have apple ID but after signing into that account too, it does't allow to update. None of the updates for these application are show in software update of late, but it flashes in the dock where app store is . Kindly suggest.

Should be the account you registered your mac with, and/or the account you used during the setup assistant.

  • Trying to update pixelmator. Anytime I try it tellsme "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it." ???????? I have entered my account password several times and nothing happens. Any hints?

I just sign in  to my account (the oprevious one, with which I bought Pixelmator was hacked and I changed the Password)
Now,anityme I try to update Pixelmator (V. 2.1) the app store tells me "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it."
It simply does not work. Any hints?
    Thanks for your help.

It used to be that Spotlight had to create an index for the boot volume with the /Applications folder in order for the App Store Update option to work properly. I had a habit of disabling Spotlight for all volumes by adding disk volume names to the Do Not Index list under the Privacy tab in the Spotlight System Preferences panel, so App Store never let me update apps until I turned Spotlight back on. I turned it on until I was able to update the apps, then I'd turn it off again.
I'm currently faced with the same error message (Login with the account you used to buy the free package) but Spotlight is turned on. Apple really goes out of its way to not tell you what account you used to buy something. That's not supposed to be a big deal, I only have a couple accounts. But when I tried them all, App Store refused to let me update using ANY of them.
It's just Xcode. I can just delete the darn thing and buy it again (all 4 GB of it), but this is really annoying!

    Hi...
Delete both apps using this utility >  Download AppCleaner for Mac - Uninstall your apps easily. MacUpdate.com
That will delete the apps and all associated files.
Then re download the apps. That will download the most recent version updates included.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed  then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.

Thanks for you reply.  I'm 99% positive that I'm using the user id and password that I used to set up my computer.  That's why I'm stumped.  I read the solution someone else suggested (type your user name without @gmail and create a new password.  When I tried it, I was asked for my birthday.  It didn't recognize it.  I know I got my birthday correct. Oh well...

  • Why doesn't my macbook pro let me update certain applications? It says "You have updates available for other accountsTo update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.

Why doesn't my macbook pro let me update certain applications? It says "You have updates available for other accountsTo update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.

it's also likely that you used two different apple IDs to purchase apps. if that's the case then you simply have to log out of your app store, and log into the other account to update the apps.
from experience it's not possible to syncronise purchased content from two different accounts. but you can always give Apple a call.

  • I currently have Iphoto v. 9.1.4.  There is an update v. 9.4.3 that I am unable to install.  I keep getting a message, "you have updates available for other accounts.  To update this application, sign into the account you used to purchase it."

I have iPhoto v 9.1.4.  Update available is 9.4.3.  I keep getting this message:  "You have updates available for other accounts.  To update this application, sign into the account you used to purchase it".  I have done this and I keep getting the same message over and over again.  Please help me!

Please try each of the following steps you haven't already taken, until the issue is resolved. After each step, relaunch the App Store and try again.
    1. Follow the instructions in this Apple Support article.
    2. If any App Store purchases were made under a different Apple ID, or if the bundled iLife applications were accepted under a different ID, sign in to the App Store with that ID to update.
    3. Alternatively, delete the probem applications and re-download them with the ID you're using now. If you haven't already purchased them with that ID, you'll have to do that first, because purchases can't be transferred from one account to another.
    4. Select the Purchased tab in the App Store window. If you see an item in the list marked "You have 3 apps to accept," click Accept.
    5. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/adoption.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window may open with a file selected. If it does, delete the selected file. You may be prompted for your login password.
    Then repeat step 4.
    6. Select
    Store ▹ View My Account
from the App Store menu bar, then select View hidden purchases. If you're trying to update any hidden purchases, unhide them.
    7. Launch iTunes and select
    Store ▹ Authorize This Computer
    from the menu bar.
    8. If you've moved any App Store apps out of the Applications folder, or into a subfolder, put them back. Never move or copy those applications. If you have backup copies of the apps on another volume, unmount it and try to update again.
    9. Contact Account and Billing Support.
