Remotely connecting to another mac.

I have a Macbook (10.6). A family member just got a new iMac (10.6) and is switching from Windows. He knows nothing about MacOS (yet).
Is there a way that I can remotely connect from my Macbook to his iMac and "take control" of his iMac to help him setup his computer, and walk him through things while explaining thing to him over the phone?
Does MacOS support this? What is this "feature" called?
Thanks!

It's called Screen Sharing. Works great. Check for info under Mac Help (the setting is under Share in System Preferences).

  • How can i remotely connect to my mac without sharing my screen

    Hi,
I have a Mac at work to which I occasionally connect from another Mac at home. Now I would love to export the applications similar to Linux where I just set the display to another device. Alternatively, I would also use screen sharing if the remote Mac's screen would not turn on and invite everybody around to follow my work (i.e. the workstation should either stay locked, similar to when connecting to a Window machine with MS Remote Desktop) or it should remain blank.
I am using the latest version of Snow Leopard on all machines.
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    equinox

    TO JAISEN.....
not necessarily, every "computing" device (imac, TC, AEBS, pc) has its own separate set of ports. There is a way to achieve what your trying to do as I'm trying to accomplish the same thing, i have not fully gotten it working yet as i'm restricted to my network so any changes i do, i cant test till i go back to work and use their pc. So let me figure out my way and if i get it working ill tell you how i did it (looking for an alternative to mobile me). But back to your question. I'm going to explain the config settings in airport NAT forwarding. Just remember you imac has to have a static IP.
public udp port: "any port you want to use"- 3032
public tcp port: "same port as above" - 3032
private IP address: "the satic IP of you iMac" - 10.0.1.???
private udp and private tcp: 548
    that would be equivalent to
    "your-external-ip":3032
the way this works is that you router will take those port (3032) and know that you want to access the the port 548 on your imac ( the private ip),, basically the port 3032 is a substitute for port 548 on you imac.
I hope that helped, maybe you can help me.
I'm trying to access my airdisks remotely. im using that free dns thing, i thing its called dynDNS, and it works %100 as I use it to remote monitor my torrent downloads (transmission with clutch), so at work if i go to my server , i can access the remote torrenting easy because it works through the web browser, but i dont get how to access my airdisks. what do i need to do in windows to access is what im asking???
if you dont mind, i could email you my web address ( im kinda cautious of posting it) and maybe you can test it for me. Do you have a windows pc??

The circuit of my macbook is dead yet the hard drive is fine.  I need to access a file from the hard drive, how can i do this? The mac turns on the screen freezes as bright blue.  Is there a cable i can connect to another mac that will let me transfer the file?

There is another option if the Macbook will start up in Target Disk Mode.
Restart the computer while holding down the T key. If you see the firewire symbol moving around on the screen you can connect this one to another one in TDM. You will need a suitable cable to connect the two Macs.

  • Why does my iPhone not show up in iTunes on a mac that has a shared internet connection from another mac?

I have what I would consider a difficult question. I called Apple Care and after she spoke to a senior advisor, the representative ended up saying it wasn't possible.
Having said that, I'm sure this is not a difficult question for people with networking expertise.
    Setup
So...I have a MacBook receiving a WiFi signal via AirPort.
In System Preferences, I have turned on Internet sharing (share airport over Ethernet).
I connected the Ethernet port on my MacBook to the Ethernet port on my MDD PowerMac G4.
At this point, I can successfully browse the web, perform software updates, and view other computers and iTunes libraries on my network from my G4.
    Goal
However, in iTunes on my G4 I would like to use iTunes DJ.
    Tried
    So...I click on iTunes DJ.
I set the settings (button in bottom right) to allow guest remotes, etc.
I turned on iTunes Home Sharing (logged into the same account as by iPhone).
    Problem
However, from the Remote app on my iPhone, I am unable to see the library on my G4.
Also, if I want to pair my iPhone Remote app with iTunes on my G4, I click add Library in the Remote app, but iTunes on the G4 never displays my iPhone in the left column (although I am able to see all other iTunes libraries being shared on the network).
Thus, I cannot connect to iTunes as a guest Remote, nor can I connect as paired remote.
I have successfully done both of these things with computers connected directly to my modem, as well as with computers connected via WiFi.
The problem is connecting devices to computers that get their internet connection though another computer via internet sharing.
    Question
So my question is about Internet sharing itself. Is it not a fully featured ad-hoc network? Does it only provide browsing capabilities and the ability to browse networked computers, but NOT devices such as an iPhone? I don't see the difference; my iPhone is on the same network as the computers, so why is there no communication between it and computers that gain their Internet connection through another computer?
I really hope someone out there who is an expert in networking can help me out with this. Or if it truly is impossible, if someone could explain to me why that is the case, I would also appreciate it.
ps. I usually have my MacBook sharing its Internet connection through an old router that I am using as a switch because I share the connection with three other computers. And if it isn't obvious, the modem is downstairs, and the MacBook, old router being used as a switch, and other computers are upstairs where there is no Ethernet wired.
Thank you in advance for any help.

  • Which VNC program should I use to remotely connect to my Mac?

I have attempted to use both RealVNC Viewer and TightVNC. I have set up "Screen sharing" within Leopard and ensured that in the "Security" settings in System Preferences that "allow all incoming connections" is checked. I have also ensured that port 5900 (the default port for vnc) is routing to my mac through my router.
I can initiate a connection to my mac but the second the connection starts to open, it resets. I am not sure what what I'm doing wrong and am open to suggestions.

You could just as easily get by with "set access for specific services and applications" on the remote server machine, as an FYI.
Are you attempting to VNC across the internet at large, or are you on the same local subnet? If you are trying to do this across the internet at large, you need to do some configuration to the router on the server end (which I am assuming is a home-based machine), as you have done.
Are you using Leopard for both client (local) and server (remote) machines? Then use the built-in Screen Sharing on the client machine in Finder. Just do a ⇧⌘k to browse the home network (if you are on the same subnet), click on the server machine, then click on Share Screen. Or you can do ⌘k and enter vnc://remoteComputerName or vnc://remoteComputer192.or10.IPaddress if local. If trying to do this across the internet, you would ⌘k and enter vnc://yourDomainName (if you have a domain name for your home network like from noip.com or dyndns.com) or vnc://yourRouter's_External_WAN_IPaddress. And you would need port forwarding set up in your home router.
If you don't have Leopard on both machines, and you have to use a VNC client like RealVNC Viewer or TightVNC or CotVNC or JollysFastVNC or..., then on the remote server Leopard computer, in its System Preferences Sharing, after you single-click on Screen Sharing and have checked the checkbox, make sure you click on Computer Settings... and click on VNC Viewers may control screen with password and enter a password that the client VNC program would use.

  • HT1386 Sync problem after connecting to another Mac

My daughter connected my iPad 2 to another mac computer. Now all the songs on the iPad are gone and the "Sync" within iTunes starts but does not complete and no music is being transferred (neither via USB nor via Wi-Fi). Any ideas? Cheers!

You really don't have to explain. I had young kids at one time.
If you connect the iPad to your syncing Mac - the one that you usually use - and it will not sync - try quitting iTunes, restart your Mac and restart your iPad as well.
Also, make sure that the music is still selected to sync in iTunes in the Music Tab, when the iPad is connected to the Mac, while iTunes is running and with the iPad selected in the devices tab.

  • Remote connection between two macs.

I'm trying to set up a remote connection between my iMac and my MacBook so I can share them over the network. On the MacBook's Terminal I'm entering the following command: "ssh username@hostname" witch is supposed to let me remotely login into my iMac, after a few seconds the command line prompt me with this message: "connect to host 1.2.3.4 port 22: Operation timed out". What am I missing?

  • How to remotely log into another Mac in a different state?

My Uncle owns an older Mac Pro running 10.6. He's new to Mac, so from time to time he calls me and asks me questions. I thought it might be easier to log onto his computer remotely and do what he needs to do, or show him - as he watches me - how to do things.
He's in NC and I am in FL. We tried to remotely connect earlier today, but had no luck.
All the tutorials out there say to go into System Preferences/Sharing and check both the Remote Login and Remote Management... but as I try to connect using the address it says to use, I cannot connect. I wondered if by some chance if the IP is wrong?
Can someone walk me through how to do this, and I mean very detailed instructions, cause we are both at our wits ends.
    Thanks!

Screen sharing that way only works over a local network, unless you do quite a bit of extra setup. You should use screen sharing via Messages/iChat.

  • Want to connect to another Mac in another state, Best Way?

G'day, I help my brother out with his accounting for his business, at the moment I am using logmein to connect and do what I have to. It is very choppy and a bit hard to work with and cant wake his mac up if it goes to sleep.
I'm just wondering if there is a better way to connect to him? I use a Mac Book Pro and he has the latest iMac.
At home I am a part of a private network to work so I just VNC into all the computers on that network, that works quite well most of the time. I have a time machine with a linksys broadband firewall router / VPN endpoint.
I had a look at back to my mac but he had some errors, my end says it will work with another mac with it enabled.
What would the best solution be?
    Thank you

I'm not sure how that will effect my current private network with work?
The network on your end doesn't matter much, as long as you're not behind some kind of firewall that prohibits screen sharing connections. What's important is the network on the other end, as you'll need full control of it in order to set up access to your brother's machine. But if you read my other post that I referred you to and it sounds like Greek, you're probably better off just sticking to either LogMeIn or Back To My Mac.
If I did try it do you just set up a shared mac in the finder window and screen share somehow?
You'd turn on screen sharing in System Preferences -> Sharing on your brother's machine, making sure that you know an appropriate username and password on his computer. Then, from your machine, the easiest thing to do is to open /System/Library/CoreServices/Screen Sharing (adding this to the Dock would be a good idea if you do this a lot) and type in the IP address of your brother's home network. See the notes on that IP address in that post I gave you a link to.
Anyone had any experience with back to my mac?
No idea, I haven't needed it, so I haven't tried it. Someone else will have to chime in on that one.

  • "Connection Failed" when trying to connect to another Mac on my wireless network.

    Hi,
I am having an intermittent problem with the connectivity between my iMac and Mac Pro - the latter is the media server for our house. Occasionally my Apple TV's seem to lose connectivity to the Mac Pro too which is a real pain. Both Macs are running Mavericks and the Apple TVs are running the latest software too.
If I try to connect to the Mac Pro in Finder on my iMac, the Mac Pro is there but when I click on it I get "Connection Failed". Rebooting both computers seems to fix the problem but is far from ideal when mid way through a film!
The messages in console on my iMac when I try to connect to the Mac Pro in Finder is:
    14/03/2014 10:20:33.542 sharingd[253]: SDSharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned -5999
14/03/2014 10:23:34.180 locationd[82]: could not open write stream for /var/db/locationd/clients.plist
I'm not sure if this provides a clue?
    Thanks in anticipation,
    Rob

I've managed to connect OK using Connect as. So at least that part is solved. I will see if I can get any diagnostics as to why the Apple TV drops out.

  • WiFi Connections thru another Mac

I apologize in advance if this is a very simplistic question. I have a 6 node home network, all wired with CAT5 for 4 mac's and 2 windows PCs. I discovered recently that my Mac Mini has a wifi antenna built in and I can now have some of my laptops connect to the network thru wifi, and I do this as well with my iphone 3G. No worries.
But consider my network topology for a second. Everything is wired, except that wifi is made possible with my Mac Mini, which is also wired to my network but has its own wifi service for other devices. So here's the question. When I try to sync iphone apps with my MacPro thru wifi, they don't see each other (I'm talking specifically about two iphone apps that sync to Mac apps, 1Password and MacFamilyTree). Is this because the wifi is only connected to the Mac Mini, and doesn't let wifi connected devices see my Mac Pro? Do I have a network config problem or am I thinking about this wrong?
    Any advise is really appreciated!
    Thanks
    Jmac

    apple2be,
I too have a wired network in my home. Usually, I leave the Airport off, but curiosity got the better of me and I had to try to recreate your situation. My network lives in the 10.1.1.x IP range. I enabled Airport on one of my machines and set it to share the internet connection from ethernet to Airport (mimicking your Mac Mini). I then enabled Airport on a second machine (representing the iPhone) and connected to the Airport network created by the first machine. I looked at the IP address of the Airport connection on the second machine and found it to be in the 10.1.2.x range. As I suspected, the Mac Mini is acting as a router/wireless access point and is performing NAT between the 10.1.1.x and 10.1.2.x networks. Your iPhone can probably see your MacPro, but your MacPro cannot likely see your iPhone in much the same way that a computer from the internet (hopefully) cannot see past your router (firewall) into your home network.
You may want to try using your MacPro as the wireless access point instead of the Mac Mini. The iPhone may be able to sync to the Pro in this situation, however, I fear you'll run in to much the same problem.
Good luck and please let us know how this works out for you. I'm very interested for curiosity's sake...

  • What is the best way to remotely login to another Mac?

My mother & I recently decided to take the plunge from the PC world to Apple world.  I have an MBP w/ OS X 10.8.2, and she has the same w/o the recent OS upgrade (10.7.?).  While we're both still at the bottom of the learning curve, I'm a little further ahead and am constantly running over to her place to trouble shoot/assist her with the transition.  I've been researching ways to remotely login to her computer and am now more confused than when I started.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?  I basically want to be able to login to her system and takeover as if I were on site.  And, while I don't know if my research, thus far, has brought me any closer to a solution, it has raised a few questions:
    1)  Do I simply want to go with 3rd party sofware like Logmein and will the free versions be sufficient or are they just trial offers?
    2)  Or is ARD my best option and am I right in assuming we'd each have to pony up the $80 for installs on both MBPs?
    3)  Some of the discussions talk about much more expensive ARD fees with multiple licenses.  Am I correct in assuming these are meant for network administrators and wouldn't be necessary for my purposes?
    4)  I noticed a free VCN version available from the App Store but came accross posts which seem to indicate possible security issues.  Are these valid concerns and does ARD address them?
    5)  Will I run into problems because we're using different OSs?
    6)  I attempted to follow instructions for an "ssh" remote login that I found by doing a search of 'remote login' under the Apple Support.  But when a password was requested, I didn't seem to be able to enter one into the command line.  Again, I'm new to Macs, but the cursor didn't move when I entered characters, so I was left wondering whether characters were being entered or whether this is Appple's '*****' feature used to guard passwords.  Either way, after 3 attempts, my efforts were repeatedly terminated.  Unfortunately, I'm not even sure I was entering a valid password as the article I'm referring to didn't specify how to set a password.  I used a VCN password I had set up under the Remote Management option in the Sharing utility under System Preferences.  I'm assuming this was the password they were looking for but couldn't be 100% sure as the instructions I followed were not related to "ssh" logins nor were they from Apple Suppot.  Anyway, is this "ssh" login worth pursuing and does it function independently or does it only work in conjuction with ARD?  If it is a stand alone solution, where can I go for better guidance?  The Apple Support link I used was:  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH1112.
    7)  Being recovering Windows users, we both have MS Office for Mac 2011 which has MS's Remote Desktop Connection app.  But from reviewing a few posts, it looks like that comes with it's own set of issues.  It also kind of defeats the purpose as I'm trying to wien myself off of MS.  But if someone out there has experience and suggests this as the "ultimate" solution, I'm willing to listen.
I know I've babbled on quite a bit and I don't actually expect anyone to take the time to answer all of my questions.  But I'm hoping I might get a collective answer, and more importatnly, I'm really hoping to narrow the field and get generally guidance on the best Mac-to-Mac remote login solution.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • How to connect with another Mac via AFP

My parents have a Mac (10.4.8) which is in a different location than my own. They would like to send me some files however, I thought it would be easier if I could just log into their computer from mine, and grab the files myself.
How is this done, if at all? I have the AFP address of their computer (file sharing is on as is Apple Talk on both machines) but can't seem to get this to work by using the connect to server command?
    Any help much appreciated!

If you have broadband internet then why not send the files via email. Quick, simple.
If your computers can be connected via Ethernet or wireless, then you can use file sharing. However, you must be able to communicate directly. That means connecting an Ethernet cable between the two computers or being able to communicate wirelessly - wireless modem, Ethernet modem connected to a wireless router, and Airport cards in both computers. • Remote connectivity (mom's mac)

As always, apologies for asking something that's likely been asked a thousand times, but I didn't find a succinct answer.
I run 10.4. my mom's Mini is on 10.3 and is located far away. After three years of emailing and talking her through all kinds of basic computer type crap (why did that icony thing go poof?) I'd like to just take remote control of her computer via broadband connections. Open source solutions like Chicken of VNC and the gawd-awful complex video "How to use your Mac Anywhere" is not the answer.
Is there an easy to set up and use remote access app in 10.3/4 (I'll even update both of our macs to 10.5 if necessary) that enables me to gain complete control of her mac? Can I set this up remotely with only the assistance of a typical 80 year old parent helping at the other end? It's gotta be Simple.
    Many thanks

I dont think 10.3 or 10.4 have built-in screen sharing, so you'd have to install apple remote desktop (though I think this only runs on 10.4) on the machines to get it to work. Other than that you'd have to install an open source VNC server and then use Chicken or some other VNC client to view her computer. Other than installing those components you'd have to set up port forwarding on her router (or if she gets a direct connection to the internet you'll need her IP address) and then you should be good to go. The port forwarding part would be the tricky part, since you'd have to talk her through getting the VNC ports open and directed to her computer. Perhaps you could instruct her to make her computer a DMZ host in the router, so you wouldnt have to worry about specific ports...there are all kinds of ways of getting her equipment set up, but first of all you'd need to get a VNC server running on her computer.
