Remove duplicates in Iphoto

How do I remove duplicates in Iphoto?

I'm going to use this thread to ask a slightly related question, if that's ok..
I'm  trying to get rid of duplicate IPhoto libraries (on various external hard drives).
I opened the one I want to keep , and then looked (in Finder) at each of the other libraries and dragged any photos or folders that seemed not to be in the Iphoto library I'm keeping, INTO that library .
I then moved into the TRASH all of those extra Iphoto libraries.   I did not yet empty the trash, because  my fear is that Iphoto doesn't actually have those photos there, and that once I empty trash, those photos will be gone.
I'm sure i'm confusing things I've read about the risks of incorrectly deleting photos, so I just want some reassurance that what I did will work out and I won't find that the photos were deleted when I deleted the iphoto library I dragged them from.
thanks!!

How do I remove duplicates in iphoto?

Whenever I move a photo into  an Album and the same photo already exists there, the second p;hoto is accepted without warning.
    These are not duplicates.
Photos in Albums simply reference the pictures in the Library. A Photo can be in as many Albums as you like without using any extra disk space,a nd it can be used in an Album as many times as you like. There is no duplication involved here.
At heart, an Album is simply an instruction to iPhoto: Show this bunch of photos together in this order.

  • What is the best app for identifying and removing duplicates from iPhoto Libraries/Pictures?

I have five iPhoto Libraries (original, default merged, etc.)  I've tried using iPhoto Library Manager, but I seem to be digging a deeper hole.  Also, question about the 15,000 faces:  Are these taking up space on my hard drive?  I gather I cannot easily remove them from libraries.  Taking photos at concerts, sporting events, etc. just creates more faces in iPhoto;  frankly, I could do without ANY FACE DETECTION!

These applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates:  PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

  • Removing duplicates in iPhoto 6

I have an iBook which I was using for a while and builtup a collection of photos on it.
I then got an iMac which i used more due to the larger screen. As soon as I got it I should have copied the contents of the iBook onto it but instead continued using them in parrallel.
    Both have iPhoto 6 installed.
What I need to do is copy all the photos on the iBook to the iMac and then remove all the duplicates.
iPhoto 6 doesn't seem to offer this functionality.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hi curium,
I have used iPhoto Library Manager to merge two small libraries. It was very good at detecting duplicates and it did not import the duplicate into the main library. My situation might be different from yours though. I own the registered version.
You might want to try it. It is a great program and does much more than just managing your libraries.

  • Finding and removing duplicates in iPhoto?

I've accidentally re-imported about 200 photos into iPhoto (all with the same file names) and I'm trying to build an Automator workflow to remove the duplicates without success. Anyone have any himts on how to do it? I can't find appropriate actions.
Also anyone know of other useful iPhoto workflows especially any that automate adding keywords?

Its iPhoto 6 and while they are in different rolls (I must have failed to use the check box at some time), its not as easy as deleting the whole roll as it appears they have slightly different contents hence the desire to compare and delete dupes.
Dealing with such a large number of dupes its difficult scrolling up and down to identify the right files to delete.
    Thanks for your reply.
edit: reading around it seems this isn't all that easy in iPhotoand the 2 apps I've found that offer to do this each have drawbacks.

  • Removing duplicates in iPhoto

My computer shows I have nearly 24,000 pics.
The Events show I have only 12,000.
How do I remove the duplicate that are slowing my computer?

When I go to iPhoto and click on PHOTOS, in the upper righthand corner it show 24,000.
If I go to EVENTS and total the amount there is it 12,000.
The number of photos you are seeing in the "Photos" album should be exactly the same as you are seeing, when you add the number of photos in your events. Each photo is in one event.
If the numbers differ, you have probably a corrupted iPhoto library and need to repair it.  It is not a question of hidden duplicates
For example, in a test library with one event, the Photos view will show exactly the number of photos as in the single event.
Try to repair your iPhoto Library with the First Aid Tools.
To launch the "First Aid Tools" hold down the options-command keys ⌥⌘ while double clicking your iPhoto Library.
Keep the keys held down firmly until the First Aid panel appears.
Then select  "Repair Database" from the First Aid pane. This may take a while for a large library.

  • How do you remove duplicates in iPhoto

I just upgraded from the original Mac mini to the new one, when moving my photo library it appears to have included all the photos i have deleated in the past. I not have multiples of most photos. Is there a way such as in iTunes where it selects only the duplicates so I do not have to scan my whole library.

How did you "move" the liberary
The correct way is Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
If you still have to original library trash the bad one and move it as above - there will be no duplicates
Remember never import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - it does not work and creates a terrible mess

  • How can I find and remove duplicate photos in iPhoto?

What is the best way to find and remove duplicate photos in iPhoto?

Are you seeing these duplicates in iPhoto or via the Finder?  If it's in the iPhoto window then you can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when one library has been imported into another with iPhoto 8 and earlier.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
I also prefer iPLM as it is more than just a dup finder.  It's a the most versatile iPhoto utility available.

how do I remove duplicate photos in iphoto? easily.

I have the most recent copy of IPLM (3.8.6) but can't find a way to mark/remove duplicates using it.
That's not the most recent version of iPhoto Library Manager The current version is 4.0.2. I believe the ability to deal with duplicates came with v4.

    Hi Larry,
I have not been importing photos for some time.  Literally, I open I Photo and pictures from my library are dupe'd, side by side - 2 - 3 even four side by side.  I deleted hundreds of faces pulled from photos that just appeared in the library.  Nope.  I don't use the FACES feature.  These simply appeared in my library.  Other photos that are not mine - look like they must be from web sites or something have appeared as well.
When I was importing from my camera I always checked the box to not import any duplicates.  It appeared that was being done properly.
I shoot raw +jpeg now with a new camera and so two of each shot comes into the library but the dupes I'm talking about are pretty much happening throughout years of pictures.
Yesterday I met w/a tech at Apple and upgraded to the most current I Photo.  But, the comments I've seen seem to be happening on the later versions as well.

  • My previous programme to remove duplicate photos from iPhoto will not work in Photos. I feel I was tricked into buying a remove duplicate app from Apple which, after purchase, indicated it is only for iPhoto. Does anyone else have this problem. Does

    Remove duplicate photos.

There is no Apple provided duplicate remover application. You must have bought a third-party application. Which application is it?
Photos is very new, and there are only a few apps, that have been updated to handle Photos Libraries are:
For example, these new apps claim to work with Photos:
    Power photos:  Fat Cat Software
Duplicate annihilator: Brattoo Propaganda Software - Products
    PhotoSweeper: http://overmacs.com/photosweeper.html
