Removing dotfiles in /home when installing over an Ubuntu partition

I'm getting ready to install Arch soon, but I thought of a slight issue:
I have an existing Ubuntu partition with separate / and /home partitions. The plan is to just install Arch on / and leave /home alone (hehe...home alone). But there are a lot of dotfiles and configurations
in my /home currently that I'm using for my applications in Ubuntu.
Obviously, when I install Arch, these applications will all get replaced, so I won't care about their config files. However, my /home will (theoretically) be untouched after the installation, but all the dotfiles from my Ubuntu apps will carry over.
I thought about just deleting *all* of the dotfiles in /home as soon as I boot into Arch for the first time, but I'm not sure if Arch generates its own dotfiles in /home, and I wouldn't want to accidentally delete those. If Arch doesn't generate any, then I think my problem's solved.
But if Arch does generate them, then is there a way to delete just my Ubuntu dotfiles that have carried over during installation?

Agreed with WW, but I'd say the best approach depends on your goal.
If you have a lot of 'dot-files' that won't be used with your arch programs, then I can understand the desire to do a good clean up - but it is not strictly necessary.
The only place where it would be necessary would be for programs for which the configuration has changed substantially between the version you had in ubuntoo and the current versions that arch will get you - this may lead to some programs failing to start.  In these cases though, the cause should be obvious.
If you want a good middle ground, you could backup all your dotfiles, remove them all, install arch as WW suggests (without the home partition mounted), then as you start using programs and realize "oh, crap, I wish I still had my ubuntoo config" then you can restore it from the backup and revise it as necessary for version changes.
Migrating my 'dotfiles' for vim, bash, and mutt are first thing I need to do when I get a fresh install - otherwise I keep running into things that just feel like they don't work right (they don't work how I'm used to).

  • Acrobat Pro XI when installed over Acrobat 9 Pro removes LiveCycle Designer.

Acrobat Pro XI when installed over Acrobat 9 Pro removes LiveCycle Designer.  Forms Central can't open LiveCycle Designer Forms so what do you do?
I have uninstalled XI and re-installed LiveCycle Designer only.  On re-installation, I chose not to uninstall version 9 and to do a customer set up (not installing forms central).
LiveCycle is now working along with Acrobat ProXI

LiveCycle Designer is no longer distributed as part of the Acrobat release. I think it is available as a separate product. At this point, Acrobat provides the AcroForm type tools (kind of hard to get to, just as in some previous versions) and the option for Forms Central. The whole focus has changed. I suspect that others may be in the same situation of trying to get their forms to interact in Acrobat or Forms Central, but at this point I do not think there is any way to back Designer forms into either of the two current formats. Not much help, but a comment in any case.

  • Can't remove Acrobat 7.0 when Installing Acrobat 9.0

I must have uninstalled Acrobat 7.0 Pro improperly and so now when I go to install Acrobat 9.0 Standard the installation wizard tells me I must remove Acrobat 7.0 before installing 9.0.  As it is trying to uninstall the rest of 7.0 during the 9.0 installation, a message screen pops up telling me "Error 1714: The older version of Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard cannot be removed.  Contact your technical support group".
What do I do as I have tried runnning clean script and manually removing Acrobat 7.0 as discussed in some threads in this forum but nothing seems to work. I do not seem to be able to delete the remaining files in the Program Files\Adobe\Active X directory, it tells me they "cannot be deleted, access is denied, make sure that the disc is not full or write protected or not currently in use".
Please help as I have a project deadline on Monday 7/20 and I need to produce .pdf files!!!!!

Reinstall 7 and then delete it properly. You might actually be able to do a repair if it is still in your list of programs. If you install it and it works, it might be better to use it to complete your deadline. Bad time to be changing software.

  • "Invalid Java Home" when installing Weblogic 10.3.1 on Mac OS X 10.6

I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm trying to install the generic [Weblogic 11g (10.3.1)|http://download.oracle.com/otn/nt/middleware/11g/wls/wls1031_generic.jar] on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), which supposedly has a JDK 1.6 installed.
It can't seem to find a JDK, and when I tell it to use the following:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home
I get an "Invalid Java Home" error.
Has anyone successfully done this on OS X 10.6?

Just as an update, we're soon to release the WLS 11g R1 PS2 update, which will contain WLS 10.3.3 just to confuse things.
As part of that, we're distributing for the first time, an additional .zip version of WLS to make it easier for developers.
The zip file distribution has no GUI installer -- it's a simple case of unzip, run a script it provides, then start the server.
The zip file distribution has been specifically tested on Mac OS X and the WLS config/domain scripts automatically adjust as necessary for the Mac OS X java environment.
Once the zip file distribution is available, we hope that developing against WLS on Mac OS X (and Windows/Linux) will be an easier task.

  • Error message when installing over existing software.

I built a LabVIEW installer that basically only installs the DAQmx drivers. This installer installed DAQmx 8.5.
Because of the need to include a LabVIEW app with our software, I have rebuilt this installer and it now installs DAQmx 8.6 as well as the LabVIEW 8.5 runtime.
When the installer runs, I get an error message with an OK button that says "Error Another Installer Is Already Running" and says something about closing the other installer or allowing it to complete and then try again.
I have found two things regarding this. 1. This absolutely only happens when the install is updating a previous version of DAQmx. 2. If I hit OK and do nothing else, the installer completes properly.
For us, item 2 above is a note to our customers telling them to hit OK and do nothing else. While this is a work-around, I am wondering whether anyone has seen this and has found a means of running the installer without having the error message come up.
    Thanks.

    Hi Matthew,
I attempted to reproduce your issue last night and after a couple of hours of building and installing, I did not see the same behavior you describe. I built an installer in LV 8.5 on a development machine for DAQmx 8.6. On my deployment machine, I previously had DAQmx 8.5 installed and ran the installer I built on the development machine. I was able to successfully install DAQmx 8.6 on my deployment machine without any error message.
So at this point, I cannot reproduce your issue. One thing you might try is rebuilding the installer for DAQmx 8.6, if you haven't already done so. I would also try starting from scratch instead of simply rebuilding the installer you previously had for DAQmx 8.5; only include the installer for DAQmx 8.6.
Lastly, you might try reinstalling DAQmx 8.6 on your development machine and then rebuilding your distributed installer.
Let me know if this results in any new behavior.
    Cheers,

  • "Invalid Java Home" when installing Oracle Weblogic 11g (10.3.1)

    Hi folks,
    I'm trying to install Oracle's Weblogic 11g (10.3.1)
The installer starts, but does not detect the JDK home (which I expected). It does however let you browse the file system to select a home. I've tried selecting the following:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home
but I get an "Invalid Java Home" error.
According to the documentation, Weblogic should run on a 1.6 JDK.
I notice that there are a few other Java related issues on these forums. Does anybody have any clues?
It sounds like the Apple JDK needs patching to make it usable by some Java apps. Bring on the 10.6 Java patch!

Just letting everyone know that the answer can be found here:
    http://blogs.oracle.com/emorales/2009/06/weblogicover_mac_osx.html
It seems that we have to "dummy up" a jre/lib directory to fool the Weblogic JDK detection check.

  • Home Directories when installing on multiple partitions

I have a macpro setup with two partitions.  Originally one partition assigned to Snow Leopard.  I log in using a network user (using OSX server) and that user has local Admin rights.  All is well.
I setup a new instance of Snow Leopard on the secondary Partition and logged in using the network user.  This had the effect of using the partition 1 Home directory for this user and I can't get the secondary partition to use itself for storing the users home directory.
The workaround I have is to log in to Partition 2 snow leopard with a local admin user then temporarily rename the Users folder on partition 1.  Next login to partition 2 as the network user, then everything gets created on partition 2 as expected.  Finally rename the Partition 1 Users folder back.  Now I can log in to either partitoin with the same user and have different local home setups.
Anyone else had this or is there a better procedure for setting up multiple partitions ?  The same happens with LION.  I need to keep a snowleoapard partition with all the setup I currently have, but start a new LION partition.  I don't want any cross contamination, hence the requirement for separation.

This was my point. I wanted total separation.  In order to create that separation (when trying to use a network user) I had to temporarily move the existing Snow Leopard Users folder (on Partition 1) so that the Partition 2 OS (either Snow leopard or LION) will create it's own User directory structure.  This is only needed for network users (i.e. ones that authenticate via OSX server).
Once the process of temporarily moving the Users folder, letting the new instance create it's own directories, and renaming back, everything works.  i.e. when I startup Snowleopard all operations are within Partition 1 then if I start LION all operations are within Partition 2.
When installing new versions of an O/S I like to have control and manage the change so that I know I have a totally working system.  Been doing the same with Linux for years, but Mac OS/X tries to be a bit too clever!

You can force Vista to rebuild the desktop icons by changing your monitor's color depth momentarily. In the display properties, change to 16-bit color. Then change back to 32-bit.

5th generation ipod not detected by my windows xp.  works fine on other pc.  performed necessary steps to remove and reinstall itunes but having same issue. is there a driver i can download to pc then direct to that specific location when installing?

I have a similar issue - my iPod nano connects and is visible in Device Manager yet invisible in My Computer and iTunes. I've tried everything I can possibly think of to try and solve this myself, all in vain.
Mine is a nano 4G. I've been using it for quite some time without the slightest problem. I have been using WINAMP instead of iTunes to manage my darling nano.
Then, one fine day I bought a new computer and the nano would not show up in My Computer, though the nano display shows "Do not disconnect". On my old computer it worked (and still works) absolutely fine with win XP as well as with win7 (the later I currently use on my new/problematic computer, which I bought last summer and that's how long I've had this problem).
Of course, after several first attempts I gave up and installed iTunes. I've tried using the Apple support article "iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows":
    - reset
    - fully charged,
    - cable works fine on two other computers
    - in normal or disk mode makes no difference
    - tried to find anything useful in the diagnostics mode
    - reinstalled iTunes several different times since then to the latest version
    - I've unplugged every other USB device except for my mouse and keyboard and tried several different USB ports on my motherboard (USB 3.0 and conventional), as well as trying different USB- related options in my BIOS.
    - I've never used any Mac with this ipod
    - I've tried fiddling with the win7 Services by stopping and restarting them and of course
    - uninstalling the iPod drivers in Device Manager. After such an uninstall the ipod would automatically be recognised and "ready for use", i.e. being invisible in My Computer.
    - Attempted to find any possible third-party conflict with msconfig or the possibility that my ipod is being confused for a network drive (for which I've disconnected my HDD, leaving only my SSD with the OS).
Sometimes, iTunes would note that iPod service (or something, can't remember exactly) failed to install properly and asked to try and repair it. I would click YES! and voila - no change! The ipod would rarely show up in iTunes on my problematic computer like this:
iTunes would warn me that the nano would need restoring so I would try and do it on my haunted machine upon which iTunes would freeze like you seen in the picture.
Despite this, I've updated and restored the nano on my father's computer to the latest version without any problems. This though, did not solve my problem in any way.
I can load music to my nano through my old computer (which for me is a real pain and hassle) and the gadget works normally in terms of its disconnected functionality.
I've taken my nano to the local service for repair and they said it was fine. Mercifully, they didn't charge for the diagnostics service (gee, thanks for not ripping me off!).
Here are two screengrabs from my Device Manager
and Devices and Printers screens on my comp:
That is my sad story as far as I can remember. It's most likely something with the drivers or something along those lines though I'm out of ideas at this point.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple Website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Does it go through properly this time?
