REMOVING files / layers / graphics from Indesign

Hi, I have used 100s of photos and graphics in a book production but now I see that many of them were not used in the book. If I delete them from the Indesign file, they keep coming up as missing files and links. Is there a particular way to remove files from an Indesign work? thank you
Vedic Press Australia

What I mean to say is that I go into Finder where all the TIFF and PSD file used in the Indesign project are sitting and those that are doubled up or created at some point but no longer needed, I then remove them. I do not wish to delete files that are sitting on the Indesign pages since they are final. I am referring for example to file that I created with a graphic which I now no longer need, a photo that I saved as psd but created the same one as tiff etc.
I have removed some of those in past because they just take room for no reason and increase the size of the indesign file. But when I reopen the Indesign file I get a pop up message that links and files are missing, referring those I have deleted and asking to find them and reinsert them.
The project I am working on is a large coffee table book with over 1500 photos and graphics over 457 pages (13" x 13"), so in the process of producing the book, obviously many psd and tiff files are created which I dont want to use anymore. All my other final graphics and photos which will show in the book are safely stored and backed up. So how do I get rid of those that I no longer need?
Thanks

  • Custom Metadata panel to show linked graphics from InDesign files?

    Hello all,
I'm looking to create a custom Metadata panel to show linked graphics from InDesign files. I'm not even sure if this is possible. Can someone please point me in the right direction? I figure if you can see the fonts used in an InDesign file, you should probably be able to pull the links, right?
Thanks for any and all help!

Have you tried trashing the prefs? See Replace Your Preferences
And of course it's essential that the links be up to date.

    Hello,

  • How to create a smallest file size pdf from indesign CS4 document

How to create a smallest file size pdf (suitable for upload to a website) from indesign CS4 document which contains multiple illustrator CS4 illustrations.
I have chosen the "smallest file size option" but the pdf file is over 30MB, can anyone help please.
    Thank you

    One trick is to
Set the placed graphics to have a transparency of 99.9% (you can do this with Find/Change and select Objects)
This is enough to force the graphics throught the Transparency Flattener
Next set the Transparency Blend Space to RGB (Edit>Transparency Blend Space)
Next set a custom Transparency Flattner Preset Edit>Transparency Flattner
    Next
    Use File>Export and choose
    Smallest file size
PDF Compatibility Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3)
In Advanced Section - go to transparency and selec the new Flattener Preset you created.
*this will convert your vectors to raster, but it should reduce your file size

  • Exporting graphic from InDesign for Web

    Hi Everyone,
My goal is to create some large buttons for the web. I probably should have done this in another program, but since I'm a beginner to Adobe and still learning, I drew them in InDesign, the program I'm most educated on. I created an embossed box with rounded corners and added on some product photos and text.
I copied and pasted the boxes onto a transparent background in Photoshop, the exported them for Web as PNGs. They came out very pixelated. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks for any help!

Copying just takes a scrap of the actual data from InDesign to Photoshop in your workflow. Hence you're getting pixelated output. The best way is to work in Photoshop use Pen tool to make curve corners and then place Photos and add text layers.

  • Removing file transfer options from client GUI.

How do you remove all of the file transfer options from the client GUI (the button, the right-click menu option, etc.)?

You can add <argument>allow_attachments=false</argument> in /var/opt/SUNwbsvr7/https:<hostname>/webapps/<hostname>im/en/im.jnlp file
to disable file transfer options from the Client GUI.
Or else if your using AM with IM then you can disable by setting the proper policy for DefaultUser through amconsole.

  • Images chopped off when creating a mobi file with kindlegen from inDesign epub

I'm having difficulty with a reflowable ebook project which includes line drawing illustrations. They are mainly looking good all sized at 600px wide (all greyscale gifs under 127k) and exporting with object export options set to CSS: relative to text flow. Where they fall in the middle of text on a page they look great, most are landscape format, wider than they are tall. However once they are exported if they fall near the bottom of the page they just disappear off the page, in some cases you just catch a tiny glimpse of the top and the rest has gone, it does not appear on the following page. I've tried a variety of export combinations include page breaks before, after and before and after and it's just not making a difference.
I'm using Indesign CC (2014) on a mac and then opening with Kindle previewer and letting kindlegen convert to a .mobi. If I open the epub with digital editions the same thing is occurring. It is an mobi file I need at the end of the process. It seems to happen whatever device I use to emulate the preview on The Kindle previewer and illustrations may appear whole in one view then disappear on another, depending on how it's reflowing. I've also sent it to my kindle and it's definitely chopping the images off on that.
Is there anyway I can ensure the whole image is displayed, I thought adding a page break before would do it but this doesn't seem to be working I'd even live with the nasty gaps that would give me. I've applied paragraph styles, object styles and looked at the export options, wondering if I've got in a mess here somehow - what takes priority?
I'd like to do this in inDesign, I have looked at the code in sigil and can only tell that the images are consistently coded, not sure how they should read.
Any help with this would be great as I'm going round and round now!

    Hi Monica
Thanks for your reply it made me focus on the export options and stop messing with styles. I decided it was time to start again, so I created a new document with the intent set to digital publishing (I've not bothered with this previously and it's not seemed to matter) and copied across the contents of the book I only had to recreate a TOC everything else styles wise copied across fine and I re-imported the meta-data then tried epub export again, in Object settings I selected use original image and selected relative to text flow, and it's working! I wonder if something has changed in InDesign CC 2014 because I never used a digital publishing intent document before as I thought the page setup had no bearing on the epub export..? (This was exactly the same export settings I had tried with my original document which was derived from a print version) Anyway I have a solution, I'm not needing to use the page breaks as the images are being put as I wanted in the text flow if they fit, on the next page if not, which is fine. Now if I could just sort the space before in paragraph styles when it's the first item in a text box, so that a dedication could sit in the middle of the page... but I guess that's another question!

  • Printing graphics from InDesign CS2 to an HP 4000 PS Laserjet

My HP 4000 Laserjet will not print InDesign CS2 documents that have pictures, other graphics, or objects created in InDesign with either a drop shadow or feathered.
I have an HP Laserjet 4000 which I previously used with Pagemaker 6.5. I could set the screen lpi and angle values for exactly as it needed to be using the Acrobat Distiller PPD and print documents (with pictures and graphics) to the post script printer with no problem. Now I am using Adobe InDesign CS2 and I don't seem to have same the printing options and control that I had with Pagemaker. But mainly, in Pagemaker, when I printed a document I could select the HP 4000 PS printer in the Print Document box and it listed Acrobat Distiller in the PPD box which is what I used.
Now with InDesign CS2, when I select the HP 4000 PS printer it only shows the HP 4000 PS series ppd (and this may be correct). Although I can still set the values for screening (lpi) and screen angles and screened objects that are created in InDesign will print to whatever screen values I selected, the document will not print when pictures and other graphics are placed into the document or if an object created in InDesign has a drop shadow or is feathered. When I remove the graphics and drop shadow, it will print, however, another problem is that it will not print certain fonts properly (leaving out certain letters in certain words - for instance the "l" in "floor".)
Is this a compatibility issue between this older Laserjet and InDesign -- is there another driver that I need -- or am I overlooking something that's obvious? I'd appreciate someone's help who may know what the problem is so I won't be doing the trial and error thing.
    Thanks,
    Cliff Stone

Thanks everyone for their input. As far as the memory shortage, I'm pretty sure that's not the problem. I can create a document in Pagemaker of only 200KB that prints fine and the convert the same document to ID and it fails to print.
I think Dov is right about the 4000 because I remember when the printer was new, there were some incompatibility issues with Pagemaker that I had to work around. The Adobe people told me back then that Pagemaker and HP postscript printers didn't get along very well.
I'll check with HP again (I've already written to them twice with no response) and see if the firmware upgrade Dov mentioned is still available, however, even though this 4000 has been very durable and a real workhorse for me, it may be time to put it out to pasture and invest in a new Postscript laserjet.
    Any recommendations?
    Thanks again for everyone's help.

  • Pdf file when made from inDesign is not cutting vector images outside of its windows

    Hello,
I have a page in illustrator full of vector images. I bring it into InDesign and crop them by putting each piece in it's own window. Then, I make a pdf. When I open the pdf in Illustrator it looks fine but when I hit the preview/artwork option, I can see that all the images from that original Illustrator doc with it. Is there any way to have just the vectors I have revealed through each InDesign window come in? The InDesign Files contains multiple pages and each window contain only ones part of that illustrator file...but all the other pieces in the illustrator file stay outside that cropped area of the window when brought into Illustrator again...anyone know how to avoid this?
    thanks
    babs

I just did a banner for a local plumbing contractor and used InDesign to
create it. I placed a vector drawing on the banner and masked it off
using a frame right to the edge of the banner.
I exported a PDF but the printe came back asking for an Illustrator
file. Fine, it's just one line of text anyway and the drawing so I open
it in Illy and it looks fine. Resave and the guy comes back telling me
that his RIP can't handle the masked image. All I can say is thank
heavens for the eraser tool in Illustrator. It would have taken me
forever to fix this with the pen tool.
So, apparently there are reasons (I didn't see any point in grilling the
guy about his workflow, it was a one-off and I'll likely never have to
work with him again) to crop instead of mask. So it's either the eraser
in Illy or rasterize the thing in Photoshop and crop it there.

  • How do i remove file or software from macbook pro

i installed some programs and now i want to remove them from my macbook how do i do it??

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Problems with ps files to destiller from Indesign CS3

    Hello out there
I have som problems when I save ps files for ferther work in destiller. It appears small lines from priceboxes that are grouped together in my dokument over pictures. This only appears when I save through postscrip and destiller and not when I save directly to pdf. Shore I can save to pdf but when you have to save over 400 pages its much easaer and quicker with destiller. Please someone can you help us.
    Lotta

What you're seeing is stitching from the transparency being flattened. It is unavoidable when you have transparency and print to postscript. It shouldn't print to a hi resolution device such as press but export is the preferred method for PDF creation.

  • Saving files as jpg from InDesign CS4 js

    Hi, Kasyan.
You originally gavy me this script to re-save files as pngs, and now I need it to re-save them as jpgs instead. I made some changes, but I must have missed something, because it's not working. Could you take a look at it:

    On first sight:
    myJPGSaveOptions.interlaced = false;
JPEG save options don't have an 'interlaced' property; that was for PNGs only. Check Photoshop's Script Help for the specific JPEG options.

  • Sound files not playing from inDesign SWF file

Using Dropbox file transfer, I'm sending a colleague an inDesign project  as a SWF file - a flip book with audio. The files in Dropbox are the SWF Movie files, the HTML and the Resources folder. My colleague is trying upload these to his website. I presumed the sound files would go up via my colleagues FTP and Flash player would link to them. The sound files are functioning. Can anyone outline the procedure one should follow to get Flash to engage with this?   Is there a better locale fo this thread?

That's what I thought too, but all files are there.  I used to have numerous files (6-8) in a dropbox folder with all parts: cptx, htm, swf, js and the html would play fine by just clicking on the link.  Once it started not working I made individual folders with each part of the file and included them into each seperate folder.  Still not loading/opening.  This is happening to everyone I send the link to.  I've tried opening it in different browsers too.
Here is a link if anyone wants to see what happens:  https://www.dropbox.com/s/460vq2nqu4dbwf1/courseconnect_training_2013.htm
Here is how I am including each part of the file in the actual folder:

  • Format changing when exporting from InDesign to PDF

I am using Acrobat 8 version 8.1.2, and InDesign version 5.0.2.
I am noticing a very specific problem when exporting some files to PDF from InDesign.
We often have a format where we have a numbered list of right-aligned number, followed by some text, a leader line, and then another number at the end of the line. This is set up with a left indent and a first line left indent (rather than using the numbered list options), and then the necessary tabs later in the lines.
I am finding since we switched to IDCS3, that when I export to PDF, lines containing this format change in the PDF. The text that appears after the number in the front of the line is pushed over on top of the leader line, leaving a huge white space. On rarer occasions, it will move things in lines that have no indents, but contain tabs that aren't being used.
I have been able to get the files to export correctly by removing the left indent and first-line left indent and using tabs instead (or by removing unused tabs). But we have hundreds of files set up in this manner so going in and changing how they are all set up is problematic to say the least.
Is this a known issue? Does anyone know why this might happen and how I can prevent it?

I haven't tried printing to PDF. I will try that and see what happens. Unfortunetly, where I work we are required to export to PDF rather than print to PDF, so if it works it will only be a clue for me rather than a solution.
Thanks for the reply. I'll try a cross post to the InDesign forms.
