Removing unused items / optimizing file size

I have a large swf that is embedded in Director as a sprite.  I now want to put it onto a web page, so file size is critical.  Is there a way to remove unused library items when publishing so that file size is reduced?  Is there another way to compress the swf so it is much smaller?  The current size is about 25 Mb.  What about streaming the swf?  I'm not talking about streaming video or audio, just any Flash content.  Any tricks for speeding the process up so that the user doesn't have a long wait before the swf starts?
In Director, there is a way to right-click on a cast member and choose "find in score".  If something isn't found it means that it either is not used in the movie or is implemented through code.  Is there a similar way in Flash of detecting unused items or automatically eliminating them when publishing?
Thanks,
Brian

all used assets would have to be downloaded eventually but it's a much nicer user experience to promptly see something useful on-stage, sooner rather than later.  background sound, for example, need not be downloaded when a page first loads and should download after items more useful to the user have already downloaded.
under file/publish settings/flash/tick generate size report you can see what's bloating your swf.

  • Sanitize or Remove Hidden Info INCREASES File Size

When I remove hidden information or sanitize a document, it nearly doubles the size of the original file. Why?? Shouldn't the new scrubbed file, if anything, be smaller?

From what you write above it sounds like all is normal and expected. If you keep adding to the file it will increase the file size.
Keep in mind that AI has unlimited undos it has to store this information somewhere, it would be pretty unreasonable to expect it to do this without increasing the file size and also if you add effects or other live operations that has to increase the file size as well even if those operations do not seem live to you.
That means it has what the object was and then it has was the object is now and it has what the object was and is as yet another contained package so to speak.
16 bit may change this somewhat. But one has to expect this. BTW the more points you have in a file the more it can have effect on how well AI will work and may also increase the file size.
But I think this all sounds as one should expect.

  • FAST_START_MTTR_TARGET - Optimal File Size

I have set Fast_Start_MTTR_Target to 3600 (1 hour)...when I query v$instance_recovery view it says that 17929 MB is my suggested log file size. They are now sized at 300MB. This can't be correct, can it? I can't have a 17GB log file. This is Oracle JD Edwards though....but what else should I look at? I know 300MB is too small.

I Beleieve you have to FSMT to too high value i.e 1hr. I dont think you will wait your database to startup after instance crash for 1hr?????? This is i believe is not a gud settings. I would rather go with default value initially
Now you have set FSMT to 1hr and oracle would think that it has to do incremental checkpoint after 1hr (to flush dirty block from buffer cache to disk) . So due to this configuration you are seeing too high value in v$instance_recovery i.e 17929.
Please be notes that value of Optimal_logfile_size is very dynamic in nature and changes its value depending upon the load on system. So you cannot basically rely on this value if your system experience dynamic load.
Looking upon Load in database and amount of redolog file switches per sec/min, If they happen to be too frequent for example 2-3logfile switches per 20 mins, then its considered to be overswitching. Oracle recommends for optimal performance every logfile switch should not happen before 15-20 mins.
So good approach is to first see your alert.log and find out that how many log switches are happening then take a decision to increase the logfile size.
Please check with your organization what they suggest how much time they need to wait while instance do its recovery and then change value from default to higher.

  • How can get the library items total file size

    Hi All,
I want to get the total file size of the library and count how many file in library.
would I use getItemsRequest can get them?
or have another ways to do that?
    Thank You
    Jimmy

Sorry, I don't have any ideas.
Just so you know, the document management support is the lowest priority.
There are not any active enhancements planned for document management.
We added some support in 12.0.x for WebAccess, but there is none planned
    further.

  • Optimizing file size for project (Splitting)

    Hi,
I have recently taught myself Captivate 4 and have nearly pieced together all the requirements of a training video. There is no user interactions or quizzes. I am still not sure what is the best method to present the video. I want to publish to our intranet using Flash.
I captured a video using the inbuilt Automatic Recording Mode (so most of the slides are stills with a couple of  FMR sldes) This produced a project with 140 slides. I understand after reading topics about file size reduction, you should try and keep projects around 60 slides. Therefore my question is do I cut this project up into three smaller projects (VideoPt1.cp VideoPt2.cp etc) then in the first project set the last slide to open Videopt2.cp and then repeat this for each project. Then publish the first project to flash. (Which is a very tedious task and I am sure there must be a better way to do this)
When I do this and review the output when it gets to the end of the first section, it errors and says cannot find next file.
I checked the adobe help file but does not seem to offer much explanation on the topic. Just two flavours (open file/URL or Project)
Are there better ways of doing this, the Aggregator seems to offer a sort of solution but I dont want a user seeing multiple chapters for what is in effect one chapter.
    Cheers exup

  • How do I completely crop a PDF so that the cropped data is removed and the file size is reduced?

How do I completely crop a PDF so that the cropped data is removed and the total file size is reduced?
When I use the "Crop" function, the cropped data still remains in the file and there is no reduction in file size. I need a way to truly crop a PDF using Acrobat software.

When you export, try to get the full file path or else you will have to do a lot of manual searching.
If you downloaded the picture from Messages, the picture is stored in your User Library/Messages. to make your User Library visible, hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Messages/Attachments.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.

  • Impact of data file size on DB performance

    Hi,
I have a general query regarding size of data files.
Considering DB performance, which of the below 2 options are better?
    1. Bigger data file size but less number of files (ex. 2 files with size 8G each)
    2. Smaller data file size but more number of files (ex. 8 files with size 2G each)
I am working on a DB where I have noticed where very high I/O.
I understand there might be many reasons for this.
However, I am checking for possibility to improve DB performance though optimizing data file sizes. (Including TEMP/UNDO table spaces)
Kindly share your experiences with determining optimal file size.
Please let me know in case you need any DB statistics.
    Few details are as follows:
    OS: Solaris 10
    Oracle: 10gR2
    DB Size: 80G (Approx)
    Data Files: UserData - 6 (15G each), UNDO - 2 (8G each), TEMP - 2 (4G each)
    Thanks,
    Ullhas

Validate this first before tuning I/O and you will be much better off.

  • Video File Sizes

There is often confusion, or questions, on why one Video file format yields larger, or smaller file sizes, than another one does. The answer is, on the surface, simple, but there are many variables, that make it a bit more difficult to give a definitive answer.
File size is governed by two factors, Duration of the Timeline (how long the "movie" is), and the Bit-Rate of the Encoding. A change in Bit-Rate directly affects the perceived quality of the file on playback, i.e. the "visual quality." That is the simple part.
However, one will be choosing the CODEC to Encode/compress the file. That CODEC choice will affect the visual quality of the output file, and also the resulting file size. As the Duration is set, the Bit-Rate is the only variable to affect file size. Some CODEC's will allow lower Bit-Rates (smaller file sizes), but at the sacrifice of quality. There are certain CODEC's, that allow for a lower Bit-Rate, but still provide adequate visual quality. A few, like DivX and its open source "cousin" Xvid, plus MKV, do a good job at compressing the file (lower file size), but still providing good quality. They are designed for streaming media, and the viewer must have them installed on their computer, on in their player, to play the resulting file. That can be a drawback, if one is say in a corporate office, where all add-ons must be approved by an IT department.
Another good format/CODEC for streaming video is WMV (for Windows computers, or Mac's with a utility, such as Flip4Mac installed), as WMV allows for good compression without too much visual quality loss.
H.264 is also quite good, and is a more X-platform choice. Again, the viewer will need to have the H.264 CODEC installed, but that is becoming almost universal. Some players, like Apple's QT Player (standard on a Mac, and easily installed for free on a PC) will install that CODEC. Also, there are several free players, like VLC Player and MediaPlayer Classic HC, that contain the H.264 CODEC, plus many more.
When choosing the format and CODEC for the Export/Share, there are many factors to consider:
    File Size
    Quality desired for playback
Platform(s) to which the file is to be delivered
Individual computers, on which the file will need to be played
Availability of the CODEC for the viewer's computer
As you can see, it's now not quite so simple, and one must make some informed decisions, before just choosing any format, or CODEC. For the first two, file size and quality, think of them as being on either side of a balance scale. As the Bit-Rate goes higher, the file size goes up, and so does the quality. As the Bit-Rate goes down, so will quality, but also file size. Since this article addresses only files output for viewing, and not re-editing, only the editor can decide how far down the quality, the visual quality, can go, and still be acceptable. The choices are myriad, but the results are tied directly together.
For more details on CODEC's, see this article: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/546811?tstart=0
For more details on output formats/CODEC's, see this article: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/878590?tstart=0
Remember, we are talking about files being output for viewing, and not for re-editing. Some CODEC's that provide good visual quality at lower Bit-Rates, and the resulting smaller file sizes, like DivX/Xvid, MKV, WMV, etc., are NOT good choices, if additional editing will ever need to be done. For some viable options on files, that will be re-edited, see this article: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4556586#4556586

Video is roughly 300MB per half hour. There is some variation depending on settings used but 300 is easy to use for estimating.
With advertisements removed most US TV shows lose 7 - 9 minutes per half hour. Many one hour shows are 40 - 45 minutes with advertisements removed. This reduces file size accordingly.

  • Swap file size and tracking down the culprit

I have a new MacBook Air running Mountain Lion and I've been having problems with swap files. While the swap seems to default to 64 MB when I start, it will quickly grow to 2 GB and then the machine seems to create new files after every time I wake the machine from sleep, but the older swap files are left around until I restart. At 2 GB or so per file, this means I'm forced to restart simply to recover lost disk space. I have 8 GB of real memory, but even with 5 or 6 GB free, the swap file still grows.
Since the problem occurs even when I'm not using my computer for much else I've narrowed the four main culprits to HP printer software, Dropbox, Crashplan, and Lytro. I completely uninstalled Lytro and all its support files this morning and uninstalled the HP printer drivers. I downloaded the most recent installer from HP and did a minimal install so that the HP Print Monitor is not part of the installation.
This still leaves Crashplan, which requires Java if you are going to run the main app and then Dropbox, which has a menu component as well as background processes.
Of course, the problem could be some other service or application that has a memory leak, but I don't know how to go about diagnosing the problem. Do either Crashplan or Dropbox have known memory leak issues?
I have iCloud turned on, Time Machine is off, and Sharing is off. I use a combination of Safari, Firefox, and Google Chrome for browsing, but typically only have Chrome open; but I guess there is a possibility that a plug-in is causing problems.

No, I see nothing recent in that directory (haven't used it in a while anyway). I suppose it was a simple matter of a bloated pacman cache.
I think you may have misunderstood. If you unmount /mnt/backups you should see no files at all when you list the directory. Any files which are there will be masked when the partition is mounted.
You're right. I misunderstood you, and having finally tried your suggestion I find that you were absolutely right!  Thank you!!  This was so perplexing me how I could not account for such a significant amount of space on such a meager partition, and this buys me a lot more time to strategize what to do with this file system
I unmounted /mnt/backups and found that 1.7 GB of files were still left over, which I was able to remove.  Now my file sizes add up, except only ~ 0.5G (of a 7.8G file system), which I guess is probably the 5% that ext3 is "reserving for root"?
Anyway, I like to idea of sparing some space for being able to log into root in case I fill up my system again (it certainly came in handy this time), but how much can I reasonably reduce that amount to?

  • Reducing Project Size, Removing unused media

I just finished a project and now I'd like to reduce the size to free up some hard drive space. I'd like to keep the captured media files that were actually used in case there are any changes from the client, but delete the ones that were not. Is there an easy way to do this? Anyone have any good strategies when a project is finished.
Everything was captured using Log and capture, so I could reimport if necessary, but I had 20hrs of footage and only used 30minutes, so there's definitely some that wasn't touched.
    Thanks,
    Duane

It is safe to use the media manager...
Check your hard drive for space...for 30 mins means you'll need at least another 6.5 GB of free space... make it 8GB to be safe...
In media manager (NOTE : also read the manual carefully) use the COPY option...
Using COPY, ensure the 'duplicate selected items and place into a new project' box IS ticked, this will set up a completely new project and folder, containing ONLY EVERYTHING you have in your 30 min sequence... and will not delete or change anything from the origonal... If you go to the new folder you'll see another folder called 'media'... this will contain all the clips etc.
Then, open up the new COPIED project, watch it to check it's ok... if it's cool (which it should be) then you now have a completely independant project that is nothing to do with the origonal... and contains only used media.
Then, open up final cut pro docs>capture scratch> 'project name' and you can simply delete ALL your old media manually, knowing that everything you need is now in a new folder elsewhere....
Of course, this only works if you have that little bit of extra space left on your drive for the new media to be copied to... but i find it's the safest, and easiest way of removing unused media.

  • Using Examine Document Remove increases pdf file size !

    Hi,
I have Adobe Acrobat Pro v9.3.0
I've been editing a lot of scanned .pdfs - rotating and cropping pages.
All this has previously worked fine with v8 but now I find that Acrobat 9 is increasing the .pdf file size after using Examine Document and clicking Remove
    For example:
    original file: 16,861 Kbytes
file after cropping 74 pages (from A4 to A5): 16,879 Kbytes
file after running Examine Document > Remove cropped metadata : 79,914 Kbytes !!!
With Acrobat 8 this process would normally have halved the file size.
Am I now doing something wrong ??
    Thanks in advance.

Hello - This problem is still here !
    Acrobat 9 Pro version 9.4.2
I've got a .pdf created by an agency (so not a scanned image) which I want to make as small as possible for emailing to hundreds of people (I'll attach it if possible somehow ?)
    I open it up when it's 331Kb
    Click Document > Examine Document
Check the Metadata and Deleted/Cropped items
    Click Remove
Click File > Save As and hey presto, the new file with all that stuff supposedly removed is 2,588 Kb
Surely I'm not the only one who's bothered about .pdf file size ?

  • File sizes explodes after removing hidden information

After removing hidden content in Acrobat Pro X (Tools/remove hidden content or Tools/sanitize) the file size increases, up to 10x (2 MB -> 20 MB). Save as optimized PDF only partly reduces the problem, file is still 3-4x the initial size. Document was created with Adobe PDF writer, but this problem occurs in principle also with other PDFs. Bug? Necessary? Workaround? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Any one found a solution to this problem?
I'm having it too, acrobat xi pro 11.0.10...
Original file size before cropping ~27MB
Same file saved as optimized PDF before cropping ~12MB
Original file size after cropping ~27MB
Same file saved as optimized PDF after cropping ~12MB
Original file saved as some other file name after removing hidden information ~60MB
Same file saved as optimized PDF after cropping AND after removing hidden information ~60MB
What on earth is going on?

  • Removing unused media files?

I tend to move slides between presentations often, and as a result I have multiple copies of media files (movies, photos, etc.) all in the presentation package. Often, if a slide is deleted, the media contained on that slide is still present in the package. Does anyone know of an easy way to remove unused media files? I'm doing this to help keep the file size down, as it's getting seriously unwieldy. Thanks

Not that I know of...I miss one option that some graphic programs have... collect on output. It will collect all linked files and place them in the same folder of you finial file. I wish a lot of programs had this function. Would save time hunting down associated files that you can't remember where you put them...
    I know this doesn't help you...sorry.

No the pages will open as separate documents in Expert Mode. You really need Acrobat or possibly you could copy and paste the contents into MS word. Then re-save as PDF.
