Renaming batch files

I would like to automate of saving, renaming, closing open documents then placing them in a seperate folder after I'm done adding watermarks to my images. The problem I'm coming across is that the action i have renames all the files using the same name (whatever example/file I used when I recorded the action).,
So even though the original file names are 123.jpg, 124.jpg, 125.jpg and I want them to be renamed as 123c.jpg, 124c.jpg, 125c.jpg all of them gets renamed 122c.jpg.
I'm not sure how to do a screen shot, so here is the skinny on what I have done...
Under the Batch window I marked the following:
Play:      Set: Set1
              Action: Watermark Save & Exit
Source: Opened Files
Destination: Folder      Desktop/Watermarked Pictures
Override Action "Save As" Commands (box is checked)
File Naming: "Document Name+c+extension
Starting serial #1
Errors: Stop for Errors
Any ideas on what I did wrong??
I use CS4 if that matters.
Thanks!!

On a Macintosh, I would suggest this:

On Windows, I personally don't have a clue.  :-/

  • Batch file for %% variable/rename %%~nf.*

    Hi
I have the batch script below which does the following:
    1. recursively extracts .zip files (each zip contains only 1 file) using 7zip to a temp location
    2. Each extracted file is renamed to the name of the .zip file preserving the extension - ren C:\DME\temp\*.* %%~nf.*
    3. The file is then moved to new location which shares the same structure except the parent folder is slightly different.
This all works fine except I have noticed one problem.
    ren C:\DME\temp\*.* %%~nf.*
This line renames the file to up to ".". If the file has a name with a number of "." I get a problem. Example = test.1.4.doc. My script renames this newfilename.1.4.doc instead of newfilename.doc
Because my %% variables apply to the original loop command (I think) I cant use %%~xI for example as this would just return .zip. I have tried a nested loop but enabledelayedexpansion does not seem to be working as %%f = the original file path.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks
    @echo off
    setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
    y:
    cd "Y:\Scriptingv1\filepath\DME\data\00"
    for /r %%f in (*.zip) Do (
    "C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" e -aoa -oc:\DME\temp "%%f" 1>>C:\DME\logs\7ziplog.txt 2>&1
    Set currentpath=%%~pf
    Set newpath=!currentpath:Scriptingv1=Original!
    ren C:\DME\temp\*.* %%~nf.*
    move /Y C:\DME\temp\%%~nf.* "!newpath!"
    @echo on
    echo Moving file to !newpath!

Rather than trying to fix your shell script, I would recommend rewriting it in PowerShell. It will be easier to write and easier to read later.

  • Batch file rename.  I have multiple files I want to rename, that have a date in their name in the mm/dd/yy format. The slashes seem to freak out the batch rename function.  Any workarounds that would help me avoid manually changing each name?

OS X Yosemite 10.10.2, Macbook Air,
Finder batch file rename function. I have multiple files I want to rename, that have a date in their name in the mm/dd/yy format. The slashes seem to freak out the batch rename function and it won't work.  I took out the slashes and worked fine.  Any workarounds that would help me avoid manually changing each name?  I should point out that I want to leave most of the name intact just change the first word in each name.  Also the files I'm working with are in PDF format.

That's a comment in the file. It has no effect at all.

  • Batch file rename

I'm using Aperture (which has a fairly steep learning curve for me).  I'm frustrated with how difficult it is to rename jpg files.  I'm a former Windows user and this is the only regret I have about changing from Windows to Mac.  In Windows you can select all, rename.  That's it.  The complexity of renaming in Aperture feels beyond my comprehension.  Is there a simple way to rename jpg files that I haven't yet discovered?

Use Metadata->Batch Change to change the names of multiple versions and masters.
Crete the name format in the Version Name Format pull down and check the Apply to Master Files if you want to change the name of the master file as well as the version.

  • Batch file renaming in Aperture??

I have need to rename several files as a batch. Aperture can get me 99% of the way there, but there´s one thing I can´t seem to do...
The naming scheme I need is
    [filname]_[yyyymmdd-hhmmss].jpg
Where yyyymmdd is year, month, day and hhmmss is hours, minutes, seconds.
Problem is Aperture puts dashes in the date and time like yyyy-mm-dd and hh-mm-ss. I tried to change is in the ITPC data, but it´s grayed out and says something about needing to be ISO compliant.
All I need to do is have the file creation dates displayed in the filenames without those dashes.
    Is this possible?
    If so, how?

under batch change chose edit under the presets drop down ...
from there create a new by clicking the + in the left side ...
from the choices on the right click and drag them up to the bar above it ... for your yyyymmdd just chose image year, image month, image day(date), putting them right next to each other no spaces, etc ... if you goof click in the bar and hit backspace ...
let me know if i can help more, i can make a screenshot and post it to show exactly if needed ...

  • D7100, .nef files will not open, batch rename naming files differently

I recently purchased the D7100/Nikon and I am having problems opening the nef files in Bridge and Photoshop CS6 (even after updating – Raw 8.4) and also renaming the files.  Lightroom 4.4, no problem.
I also tried batch renaming the files, and Bridge is not keeping the .jpg and .nef files consistent as with my old camera (D90). Also, it is creating a new date on the .nef file, rather than keeping it to the day it was shot.
    Old way:
    20140322_LasVegas_0165.jpg
    20140322_LasVegas_0165.nef
    NOW:
    20140322_LasVegas_0165.jpg
    20140413_LasVegas_0166.nef
I do use the DNG converter to convert the .nef files, and keep all file names consistent (.jpg, .nef, .dng).
Is something lacking in the updates for Bridge/Photoshop for this camera to view the .nef files?  Is there anything I can do in Bridge to fix the Batch Renaming?  I really do not want to go to each .nef file and rename each one individually.  Help!

You probably forgot to include the extension .dng or renamed with an extra dot (.) in the filename. Be surr to have only 1 dot with the three letter extension dng at the end (. dng)
You can use Bridge for that again to rename and use the dng extension

  • Batch file renaming questions

Beyond knowing that such a facility exists, I have no knowledge about Bridge scripting. Can it be used to modify the standard batch file rename process in Bridge?
I would like to rename my Canon Raw images with the date (from EXIF Date Digitised) and a sequence number that resets to zero for each new date. This sequence number should accurately reflect the order in which the images were taken (via the time component of EXIF Date Digitised). I would also like to process all files in a subdirectory structure at the same time.
The standard Bridge batch rename process does not offer a counter that resets for each new date, nor does it seem to allow processing files in more than one folder at a time.
Can this be done? Do such scripts already exist? Alternatively, are there any commercial software utilities that can do this? I am already aware of a freeware solution called DIM but am a little worried about putting my faith in something with no guaranteed ongoing support - a concern that would be addressed by a script I can control myself or a properly supported commercial solution.

    HI there Onemorewave,
It looks like there is a batch remname feature included in OS X 10.10 Yosimte if you are planing on updating.
Rename files, folders, and disks - Mac Help
    Rename multiple items
Select the items, then Control-click one of them.
In the shortcut menu, select Rename Items.
In the pop-up menu below Rename Folder Items, choose to replace text in the names, add text to the names, or change the name format.
Replace text: Enter the text you want to remove in the Find field, then enter the text you want to add in the “Replace with” field.
Add text: Enter the text to you want to add in the field, then choose to add the text before or after the current name.
Format: Choose a name format for the files, then choose to put the index, counter, or date before or after the name. Enter a name in the Custom Format field, then enter the number you want to start with.
    Click Rename.
Note: To batch rename, you would want to choose the "Format" option.

  • Batch Rename Raw Files After Import?

Can you batch rename raw files after you import, so that the file name changes in Aperture and on the hard drive? I want to be able to edit images, and then rename only the keepers. This has been asked before here, but I could not find an answer.
    Thanks!

    File -> Export, Kind: Original
When you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically creates a jepg preview of the file. Why? Because you cannot do anything with a Raw: you cannot print it, use it a slideshow and so on. However, with this preview you can work with the photo immediately.
You can, however, also process the Raw in iPhoto simply by editing it. The Raw processing engine in iPhoto the same one used in Aperture, but with less fine control. (Think of the differences between Word and TextEdit, iMovie and Final Cut). The output from the processing then replaces the preview. You can choose to save your output as either jpeg or tiff in the iPhoto Preferences.
When you are processing Raw in iPhoto you will see the Raw badge on the bottom of the iPhoto Window
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Note: After you have processed a Raw, subsequent edits to the photo are carried out on the processed jpeg (or tiff) not the Raw. If you want to go back to the original then you need to use the Photos -> Reprocess Raw command.
Aperture works in an entirely different way. What are you trying to do, exactly?
    Regards
    TD

  • Batch file rename, in current order?

After shooting an event, I normally re-sort the images, as some go together better than others. Ultimately, I'm left with a "Manual" sorting. However, when uploading to Zenfolio, the sorting gets lost. Is there a way to batch rename all files, in current order, in a sequence? i.e. instead of DSC_3045, DSC_3055 to IMG_1, IMG_2?

Yes you could rename the version names so that they are stored this way in Aperture or you could leave the Aperture names alone and just rename on export.
See the file naming presets for options to add a sequence number to the images as well as many other possibilities.

  • Rename/Batch Rename files

    I use PSE 5.
I name all my images before I import them into Organizer. Here is an example: 2007-11-01 071500 Bolsa Chica pelican -- meaning this picture of a pelican was taken November 1, 2007 at 7:15AM. I may have a dozen or more images of pelicans from that day, but taken at different times obviously. If I would like to rename/batch rename these files to indicate brown pelicans instead of just pelicans, can I do it within the program and still retain the date and the different times for images?
I can't find a way to do it. And I've searched this site as well as The Missing Manual. I've been using PSE since Ver. 3, but have always used another program to batch rename files. I'm guessing Adobe expects users to rely on tags, otherwise they would have a more "sophisticated" batch rename capability.
But am I missing something about batch renaming? Sorry for the very long post . . .
    Wendell

I have several bones to pick with PSE5's file rename ability (in Organizer, go to File, Rename), primarily the 30-character limit on new names.
I use long file names like
2007-11-11 Al and Nadia wedding NYC roses-1.jpg
2007-11-11 Al and Nadia wedding NYC roses-2.jpg
2007-11-11 Al and Nadia wedding NYC Peter and Julie.jpg
The spaces make for easier legibility to humans.
If I were to include these files in a web address, I'd use hyphens.
For this past Thanksgiving I toiled over the metadata in a group photo that might become important for family history, adding title, caption, keywords, date. I found that the "Save for Web" dialog strips some or all of the metadata, and other programs might or might not read or preserve the metadata.
A number of people who receive my photos cannot readily use the metadata:
    --Naive users (gram and gramps)
--Busy and distracted users (the niece who is a mother of 3; the day-trader who's thinking about his puts and calls)
--People with poor support (a friend who has some sort of Photoshop Starter edition at work that does not recognize keywords; and she can't justify even Photoshop Elements)
Even among all these folks, almost no one is using an operating system that requires short names.
So, I put an abundance of information into my file names. Photoshop Elements allows that ON IMPORT, but not after the fact IN THE ORGANIZER.
I just hope that this inconsistency is fixed in PSE6. I get tired of explaining this over and over again to folks.
    -- Bob
P.S. I love Photoshop Elements, but I'm looking into moving my picture store to my MacBook Pro, and using Bridge (already installed) and GraphicConvert to manage my photos.

  • Batch File Rename before OCR

Hello, I have a semi Doc Mgmt SYstem happening.
    Steps are:
    scan to a network location.
    Run Adobe to regognise text
    save into a new location
Then manually come alone and open the file, add comments, mets tags, mark up etc etc.  Rename the file, and put in a specific location based on its contents.
I am trying to make a action to do steps 1/2/3 in batch.   It seems to work all ok, except if there are files in the new location the same name, and of course I do not want to overwrite them, i have just been lazy and not filed them yet.
Is there a way, I can use JavaScript before step 1, to rename the files in the source location, maybe something like include "YYYY-MM-DD-" at the start of the file name, then they should never have the same file name as a destination file.
    thanks
    greg
P.S:  I am new to Acrobat Pro, as a side question, is there a way to run a Action from outside of Acrobat.  i.e. so I dont have to manually launch acrobat, then select my action, I can just run the action Icon or something like that.

Hi Dimitri, I looked at this, but it seems to be about stamping the files name, within the contents of the PDF?  i.e. stamping.
    File Name Stamper
    Rick Borstein
    Adobe Systems
The Acrobat X File Name Stamper Action automates the process of stamping:
    • File Name
    • File Name + Date
    • Document Title
    • User-entered text
    Or am I wrong?
    thanks

  • Limited batch file renaming options?

When batch-renaming a group of files, (currently using LR4 under Mac OS X 10.6.8) I can't see any way to do a simple sequential increment of a file number. For example, my files are typically numbered in the format "D 123456." I want to rename a new batch as D 123457, D 123458, D 123459, D 123460 etc. I cannot see an option in LR that will do that — all choices involve sequencing with -1, -2, -3 etc., or else "1 of 4" or dates or other non-useful (to me) text. Am I missing something or is this seemingly very simple thing impossible in LR? (My old MS Expression Media management application is far superior in this respect: I have total flexibility in file renaming.) Thanks for any advice.

I know where you're coming from, I still have a copy of Media Pro and it comes in handy sometimes. But there's no reason to prematurely judge Lightroom in this area. If you study the file renaming template editor you'll find that you can quickly customize the tokens and enter custom text in a way that'll generate the sequence you want:
The reason Lightroom puts in a dash is ensure compatibility with multiple file systems. But it's an option you can turn off. Note that this is in the Preferences dialog box because it affects any time Lightroom names or renames a file.
There's only one major way in which Lightroom batch renaming falls short: You can't batch find and replace text within the filename. Media Pro, Bridge, and many other free/cheap utilities can, but of course renaming files outside of Lightroom is not a good idea. Other than that, Lightroom can usually rename files as needed. In most other ways Lightroom is far better than Media Pro ever was.
