Renaming the Oracle10gXE database name

Hi,
Oralce10gXe
Linux Os
How to rename the database name from 'XE' (default) to for eg. 'TEST' ?
what are the exact steps for it ?
Regards

Hi,
it is possible to change the SID of XE like any other Oracle edition. The easiest way to do so is to use the nid (newid) utility in $ORACLE_HOME/bin (you shutdown the database cleanly, open in mount state and then execute nid target=sys/password@xe dbname=newSID, then change the dbname in init/spfile, rename the init/spfile to contain the new sid, generate new password file using passwd, and open the database with resetlogs).
However, I would not recommend renaming the XE database. I did that, and it has been a pain, since our developers changed the hardware several times, wished for new testing and development installations, and I had to play again and again with the changing of default oracle scripts. As with XE, you can run only one XE edition instance on the server (that does not change by renaming it). With that in mind, there are multiple oracle scripts with ORACLE_SID=XE hardcoded in them. Namely the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe, then all the scripts in $ORACLE_HOME/config/scripts related to starting/stopping and backing up the db, not forgetting the oracle_env.sh...
Having the experience, I would simply recommend leaving the ORACLE_SID=XE, and changing the service_name, or the TNSNAMES.ora alias. That should be sufficient for the developers to "see a pretty name".
Kind regards,
Martin

Edited by: SeenuJanu on Jun 13, 2009 4:43 AMFor that you don't even need to touch the database. The name you use in your connect string is nothing more than an alias that is resolved (in your tnsnames.ora file) to a specific service name on a specific host. Without touching anything else, you could change your tnsnames entry from something like
    ORASATYA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
       (ADDRESS_LIST =
         (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 127.0.0.1)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
       (SERVICE_NAME = ORA11)
    )to
fred =            <=== note that this is the only change from the previous entry
    (DESCRIPTION =
       (ADDRESS_LIST =
         (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 127.0.0.1)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
       (SERVICE_NAME = ORA11)
)At which point you would connect with

  • What is the Global Database Name for?

    Hi All,
I installed 10g on Linux and it seems to work ok. But I used the same string "abc" for the SID and the global database name (GDN). The recommendation for the GDN was sid.domain_name.com but I didn't know the domain_name at the time.
I don't know why the GDN exists or what it is used for. I am wondering how this lame GDN will affect the database and if there is an easy way to change it. I don't expect that we will be using the db outside of our little network, no internet users. Will users on other machines be able to connect to my db?
    Thanks

I was looking in the wrong place. I found the right documentation. Thanks all.

  • How to change or rename the logical system name T90CLNT090 IN BI 7

    HI Expert's,
i am really digging for the solution of changing or renaming the logical system name technical name T90CLNT090.
in our company we are using ecc5.0 with bi 3.5 and ecc6 with bi 7. In BW 3.5 having a connection with R/3 and the technical name of the myself bw source system(logical system) is T90CLNT090.
In bi 7 also the logical system name is same as T90CLNT090. Because of the same system name(Logical name) it is not active in BI7 and also it's giving error when i am activating the DSO Object as Transfer structure prefix for source system T90CLNT090 is not defined.
because of this i am not able to create the source system between r/3 also.
so how to change this source system name for T90CLNT090.

    Hi,
Pls follow this OSS note : 325525.
Note 325525 - Copying and renaming systems in a BW environment
    Summary
Symptom WARNING: THIS NOTE HAS BEEN REPLACED.  FOR MORE CURRENT AND MORE COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION SEE NEW NOTE 886102.
You want to copy and or rename one or more systems (database or client copy). One or more of the systems is a BW system or is connected to a BW system.
Caution: This note only deals with problems that occur in the BW source system connections. Other problems that occur in the BW environment (indexes) are NOT dealt with. See URL http://www.service.sap.com/bw --> Services & Implementation --> System copy & Migration.
Other terms BW, source system, OLTP, database copy, client copy, system infrastructure, transport system, connections, RFC connection, trfc, transfer structure, IDoc, ALE customizing, logical system name, system changeability, renaming systems, system copy
Solution Several scenarios are possible in this environment. Find the scenario relevant to your situation below and execute the steps listed or read the note(s) specified:
Scenario 1) You do not want to copy a system but only want to rename one (changing a logical system name).
Solution scenario 1): Execute Transaction BDLS both in the client to be renamed and in the connected BWs or BW source systems. To do this, see Notes 121163 and 369758.
Check the RFC destinations in all connected BWs/BW source systems as described in Note 524554.
Reactivate all partner agreements that carry the new logical system name after renaming.
Scenario 2) You want to copy the entire system infrastructure connected by the BW source system connections (that means the entire system group) by a database copy. SAP recommends this procedure for copying systems.
               Solution scenario 2):
If you want to rename one or more of the copied systems, then execute Transaction BDLS both in the client you wish to rename and in all the connected BW and BW source systems. See Note 121163.
Make sure that an RFC destination exists with the new logical name in every connected BW or BW source system.
Reactivate all partner agreements that carry the new logical system name after renaming.
Change the hosts in the appropriate RFC destinations so that they refer to the correct computer. For this, see Note 524554.
Scenario 3) You want to copy a single BW system of the group by database copy.
Scenario 3)a) You only want to exchange the hardware of your system but do not want to rename the system.
Solution scenario 3)a): You do not need to execute follow-up work regarding the system connections, except for adjusting the IP address in the RFC destinations of the connected system.
Scenario 3)b) You want to keep the original system of the copy so that you have two systems after copying.
Solution scenario 3)b): See Note 184754.
Scenario 4) You want to copy a single source system of the group by database copy.
Scenario 4)a) You only want to exchange the hardware of your system but do not want to rename the system.
Solution scenario 4)a): You do not need to execute follow-up work regarding the system connections, except for adjusting the IP address in the RFC destinations of the connected system.
Scenario 4)b) You want to keep the original system of the copy so that you have two systems after copying.
Solution scenario 4)b): See Note 184322.
Scenario 5) You want to import a client copy in a source system.
Solution scenario 5): See Note 325470.

  • Views to check the catalog database name from target database.

    Hi,
Please help me to find view to check the catalog database name which is connected to my target database because I am new to the current environment where I am working now and the previous DBA have done the set up having 2 catalog database. I want view to check from target database, which can show the catalog database name to which it is connected to.
We can check the catalog database name from the following ways but I want views to check it from target database.
    1.TNSnames.ora
2.Any backup script connecting to catalog database.
3.From catalog database we can use rc_database view to check the databases registered with the catalog database.

Please help me to find view to check the catalog database name which is connected to my target databaseYou can check for any RMAN backup jobs that been scheduled on the server.
In the scheduled script check rman command.
You can then identify the database alias (of the catalog db) that is used in the rman backup script.
Once you have found the database alias, check for the database alias entry in tnsnames.ora file present in your target database server.
Once the entry is found, you can find the IP address and catalog db name from the tns entry.

  • Confusing with the Global Database Name and Instance Name

    Dear fellow DBA's and Experts,
    Good Day.
We presently have an existing database registered (on V2 Exadata) with global database name as BIDEV.domainname.com. It has 4 instances viz., BIDEV1 and BIDEV2 which have the same service name as the instance name.
Last week, on our new X4-2 Exadata, we tried to create a fresh database. While doing so, we entered the details as below in the installer:
    Global Database Name: BIDEV
    SID Prefix: BIDEV
    Service Name: BIDEV.
Then upon the successful installation of the database, when we query
    1. (SELECT * FROM GLOBAL_NAME), it shows BIDEV as the global database name.
    2.
    SQL> sho parameter service
    NAME                                 TYPE        VALUE
    service_names                        string      BIDEV1
    3. Sho parameter name gives the below details:
    SQL> sho parameter name;
    NAME                                 TYPE        VALUE
    cell_offloadgroup_name               string
    db_file_name_convert                 string
    db_name                              string      BIDEV
    db_unique_name                       string      BIDEV
    global_names                         boolean     FALSE
    instance_name                        string      BIDEV_1
    lock_name_space                      string
    log_file_name_convert                string
    processor_group_name                 string
    service_names                        string      BIDEV1
Curious to know why it created an instance name as BIDEV_1 instead as BIDEV1.
Had tried another attempt on our test environment with SID prefix as BIDEV1, then the instance was created with the name as BIDEV1_1.
Also, would like to know what happen if we give the Global Database Name as BIDEV.domainname.com for installing the same BIDEV database on a different server while the 1st server is still functional.
Appreciate if someone could throw some light on the above confusion. Any reference material or source to the clarify the doubt.
    Warm Regards,
    Vikram.

    Hi Vikram,
Your clustered database is not full RAC, it's RAC ONE node database. In RAC ONE node database, instance names are created in that format only (i.e.e dbname_1), I don't know if there is any way we can change it to dbname1. OR if you really want to change the instance name to dbname1 format, then you can convert RAC one node database to Full RAC, then remove instance and add another instance, I hope it would be added in dbname1 format. I have not tested it, test it on your test system first.
You can find the database type in the output you shared,
    Type: RACOneNode

There should only be one: Orchestrator

  • Renaming the Custom tab name incorporated by  EEWB

    Dear All
How to rename the Custom tab name incorporated by EEWB in a txn ?
        Please guide me .
    Thanks
    Moni

    Hi Monirujjaman,
As far as I know you can not rename the custom tab once you have created it using EEWB. Alternatively, you can do one thing. Copy all the code written for the enhancement somewhere. Run the wizard again, it asks you for the Extension Title. Give the required title and specify the fields that you want. In effect you will have to create the project again.
After creating the project, paste the code again at the desired place.

Our SQL DBA, saw the GUIDs and decided to rename the databases, didnt bother to tell anyone that they did it, now search is not working at all.
Should we reconfigure a new search of try to figure out how to put SharePoint search to the renamed DATABASES?
I also have found that the prior names of the Databases what they were with the GUIDs and was thinking of telling the DBA to rename them back, would this causes an issues... and this is in PRODUCTION SharePoint...

You can get the "old" names via Get-SPDatabase. Rename the databases within SQL until you have a chance to follow the proper procedure. The proper procedure is outlined here:
