Rendering out 16:9 native clips from Color

Hi,
This may be a silly question...but I sent my project from Final Cut Pro 6 to Color -- footage was shot on an XL-2 at 16:9 with an advanced pull down (removed). So my timeline is DV-NTSC anamorphic 23.98 fps. Color recognizes the frame rate, but not the pixel ratio -- there is no output setting in the render queue for DV-NTSC ANAMORPHIC 16:9. Should I be rendering out at a custom 853x480 to achieve the correct results?
Thanks!
P.S. I should add that I tired rendering one clip at the normal DV-NTSC 720x480 setting and it came out squished into a 4x3 frame, as expected.

I don't know of a way to do it for all the clips, but 400 should only take you a few minutes.
Another option: Create an non-anamorphic sequence, edit in the shots, and then at the very end change it to an anamorphic sequence in the sequence settings. If you want to add more clips to the sequence, you'll have to go back to sequence settings and uncheck anamorphic.
Come to think of it, can you just go into the settings of the sequence you got from Color and change it to Anamorphic?

  • PROBLEM SOLVED "export clips from Color back into FCP & add transition"

If I have two clips that you cannot place a transition in between here is the only thing that worked for me.
I discovered this problem after I exported my movie clips from FCP 6 to Color and imported the color corrected files from Color back into FCP 6. I could no longer add transitions to any of my clips unless I made the following changes.
    1. 1st check to see if the video clip has an audio track underneath it. If they are not linked Select the audio and the video track to be linked, hit Command "L" and you will see an underline under the audio and video name to show that they are now linked. Do the same for the adjoining video and audio track.
    2. Next select all of the clips after the video clip you just selected by typing "tttt" this changes to the "Select All Tracks Forward Tool". Click on the track after the video track you just linked and it will select all of the tracks thereafter. Hit the "A" button to change back to the selection tool and move all of the selected tracks away from the previous video/audio track.
    3. Next type "RR" this will change to the "Ripple" tool. Now click on end of the video track on the previous video clip and type -15 (for negative 15 frames). Then click on the beginning of other video clip to the right that you linked and type +15 (for plus 15 frames).
    4. Type "tttt" to change back to the "Select All Tracks Forward Tool" the hit the "A" button to change back to the selection tool and drag all tracks back together again.
    5. You may then drag and drop your transition in between both video clips.
I hope this helps someone...this is the only thing that worked for me!!!

I am working with mostly DVCPro ftg, with a few clips in MiniDV.  I did have roughly 10 clips with speed changes, but they exported fine two weeks ago, when I did this the first time.  (Actually, it didn't keep the speed changes, but it did export with media to FCP).
The clips do have reel numbers and seem to be of the right length per clip but there's just no picture and no assoicated media with which to relink the clip.
    I'm on Color 1.5.3
Any possible ideas?  Thank you for your help...

  • Adding Dissolves in FCP after importing rendered clips from Color

    Hi,
I'm editing a 4 minute sequence. I sent my edit to color, graded them accordingly, sent it back to FCP. I'm trying to add some cross dissolves between clips, but for some reason it is not allowing me to do so. Anyone come across this ?
Trying not to get in depth into the problem, the reason I didn't add the dissolves pre-color grading, is that some clips have their speed reduced. The clips that had their speed reduced weren't being properly recognized in color. So, I had to remove the dissolves, bring back the clips speed to 100% and then send it to color for grading, send it back to FCP, reduce the speed of the rendered clip. Except, now I can't add the dissolves. As a matter of fact, I can't add any dissolves on any rendered clip, except for Fades.

Specifying the addition and duration of "handles" is offered in the "Project Settings" tab of the Setup Room. The default value is one second.
The reason that you cannot stretch the trims on the exported rendered footage is that it is new independent media with no relationship to your original source clip. I should add that handles can affect the computed time offsets of certain types of COLOR operations, which will throw those effects out of sync.

  • How do I mask out an After Effects Graphic from color grading

Hello, from what I've read, most people recommend sending complete Premiere timeline to grade in Speedgrade and render from there. I am doing that on a project now, but I'm running into the issue with my after effects graphics (a logo on top of the video)... when I change the video color, it makes the logo look terrible. I am experimenting with the mask, but it's not like a pen tool so the best I've come up with is a shape, it looks terrible. Any feedback on how people handle the After Effects graphics separately? Thank you!

  • Field order errors from Color

I onlined a job recently that had been done in 10-bit uncompressed (PAL). The final edit an hour-long documentary) had been sent to Color for grading, and I was picking up the job to finalise it (adding captions, titles etc. the usual stuff).
The colourist had rendered the clips, but hadn't sent them back to FCP. When I opened the projects in Color it had lost the reference to the rendered files, so I couldn't send them to FCP, so I imported the folders containing the rendered clips into FCP, and layed them back into the final edit as a new layer.
    All ok so far.
When I came to play the clips, they were flickering as if they had the wrong field structure, and I had to add a shift fields filter to make them correct. The original clips, the rendered clips from Color and the sequence were all set to 10-bit uncompressed, upper field, so I'm perplexed as to why I had to do this.
I checked Color and it's set to render out in the original format.
I had to render the entire timeline because of the shift field filter, which took 3 hours! Can anyone shed some light on the problem and a solution to prevent it happening again?
I've posted this in the Color forum as well.
    Cheers
    Steve

I've encountered an issue similar to this with NTSC DV coming back with reversed field order. It may just be in the nature of COLOR to assume that all media is odd/upper HD. You used to be able to buy Final Touch in three variants: SD, HD and 2K. They were individually built to make the field dominance issues moot, but now that there is only "COLOR", there may still be a few old prejudices lingering. This app does not do well with interlace, and a giant problem with it is only a flick of the wrist away.
It was probably not a good idea to render the media out of COLOR without creating a new FCP sequence.

  • Still frame on out put monitor after seq sent from color

Hi, I am sending back to fcp from color and then I render in fcp but the file will play on desktop fine but not out to monitor as it did before going to color, why is this dose color change the format I have check and the format is the same and the seq setting.
2nd question I have some clips I would like to change in a sent seq from color to fcp can I just replac then in the time line and send to editor , what is the best work flow , thanks in advance for any help.
    using a aja LH card.

Color only renders into certain codecs so there is a good chance that the codec you sent to Color from final cut is different than the one Color rendered into. For example, if you send HDV to Color you will either get back ProRes or Uncompressed. If you have you FCP setup for HDV and you try and play back a ProRes or Uncompressed timeline you will only see still images in your broadcast monitor.
For your second question, assuming I understand you correctly, I would make a new sequence in FCP that only contains the new shots and send that sequence to Color.

  • Clips being sent from color are appearing in Final Cut blank

Basically, exactly waht I said in the post. When I 'send to' final cut after correcting a video, I try to open the new sequence. Firstly the sequence doesn't have the name of the Color file, it just comes up as a timecode. And secondly when viewed in the timeline it has a yellow highlight and is totally blank. Just a single white clip. I thought I was being silly and maybe I had just sent a single clip to final cut. I double checked that I wasn't being a goon. But can't seem to fathom it out. Am I being a complete goon, is there a simple answer?
    Any help much appreciated.

    Help!
So I've tried rendering all the shots from Color as Apple ProRes 422 but I still get the same problems with choppiness on the same clips. Therefor, it is not making a difference wether the clips are ProRes or DVCProHD...... I don't get it.
In the FCP Timeline, the choppy clips are looked at differently in terms of render stats (they have the slight blue render bar above them whereas the others do not....)

  • Using avchd clips from a canon cam - finally figured it out

    hello happy forumers,
a few weeks ago I posted looking for help in getting premiere pro to recognize the correct frame rate of the clips I imported from my canon vixia HF11 avchd cam. the problem was: the 24 fps clips were listed as 29.97 in the project window; consequently, they played fine in a source "audition" window, but when put into a 24f sequence window they stuttered.
I thought that the stuttering was because premiere thought the clips were 29.97 and the sequence was set at 24, so it was trying to compensate as it went. I was partially right in that a mismatch was the cause, but not the mismatch I thought.
turns out that the canon hf11, hf10 and some of the sony cams don't really shoot in true 24f progressive. they have a SETTING called 24p, as well as a 30p, BUT, in actual fact they are STILL SHOOTING AT 60i (interleaved) but affecting some sort of a 24frames "look". Without getting into how much that pisses me off since neither canon nor anyone in any store will tell you this, the correct sequence setting to use when working with these clips is 60i non-anamorphic.
you can also fool premiere into treating the clips as 24p clips by right clicking on the file, selecting interpret footage - setting it to 23.976 and in the field order selecting no fields, but then they run in slo-mo, unless I'm doing something wrong.
I hope this saves some of you the months of nail-chewing I went through trying to edit your avchd video on an underpowered system.....

    hello kaiserboy
not sure what you're asking. as far as I've been told, the 24fp settings are not true 24 in any way shape or form, they're 60i, plain and simple, with some sort of 24 simulation. following is the email I got from dhelmly - a top gun for premiere development at adobe.
as far as my experience working with the clips for the last few weeks, I'm having great luck working in a 60i non-anamorphic sequence, and exporting in whatever format I choose - mostly h264 mp4. it looks great - I'm very happy with the output quality, although I get a few artifacts when viewing my clips before export. I assume this is due to my system being underpowered (a macbook pro).
regarding drives, I've discovered that the smoothest playback comes when using my laptop's internal drive, followed closely by a cheapo USB2 drive! lastly by any firewire 800 drive, which skips and stutters unacceptably - raid or not. go figure.
"Your camera actually shoots in 60i not 24 frames (23.976) It's really more of an effect than a frame rate. However - you can fake out Premiere to match the Canon effect. Choose the AVCHD>1080P@24 FPS Preset. Import your footage from the Media Browser by dragging the clips from the browser to you Project Bin. Next select a clip and Right Mouse Click and choose Interpret Footage, select the Assume this Frame rate option and change to 23.976 (not 24) and in the same dialog window choose Field Order>No Fields Progressive Scan. Now when you drag the clip the to the sequence it should not Redline and it should give you the 24 frame look. if it Redlines then a setting is off. I tried it here on my mac and the Canon HF10 and it worked fine.Keep in mind that the actual footage is 60i(or 59.94 to be exact). canon and Sony both have these 24 Frame look modes. The Panasonic 150 does native 24 but is much more $$. Always remember to use the Media Browser when working with Tapeless Media. We rely on onthe XML data in those folder to tell us more about the files. More cool stuff coming - lots going on in the lab. AVCHD playback will bet much better as we get to true 64 bit (OSX 10.6 & Win7) and GPU. The next gen stuff I'm seeing in the labs now is totally amazing -I've been hear nearly14 years and a Premiere user for nearly 19 years and I'm blown away - Not due out for while yet but it will be worth the wait. Mac & Win users will very happy indeed."

  • Field Order Changes?  Rendering from Color.

I received a project from a client that was run through color. I noticed their source files were lower field dominant (525/29.97) and their renders from color were upper or odd field dominant. This caused some strangeness in their sequences and it looks like they de-interlaced their clips and/or changed the field order of their sequences. I can't find anywhere in Color to set this as a pre-set, other than setting to de-interlace renders. Is it possible that Color is inverting the field order when it renders? This used to happen with Compressor, when I would export FCP for DVD's, sometimes Compressor would (set to Auto) guess wrong on the field dominance. Can anyone advise?
    Thanks in advance.

If only it were that easy. Of course, you will want to set a "re-interlace" for export....
De-interlace seems to be poorly understood and not very well executed in a lot of file-based image processing. In COLOR, both the Geometry and COLORFX rooms display spectacular weaknesses in this regard. To even use the word as its applied in COLORFX is a bit of a misnomer, because the real thrust of the exercise is to "split" and flag the fields for proper dominance handling. The COLOR USER manual has a good illustrated example of how to do this -- the result is a "twin" effects tree -- split the frame into its components at the top, do your voodoo identically for each "field" stream, then correctly zipper them back together at the bottom. Its a bit of a secret process, not entirely dissociated from a Masonic handshake.
There is a notional similarity to SHAKE in this regard, although that application only needs the FileIn node and the GLOBALS render tab enabled appropriately.

  • When importing rendered clips from davinci into premiere they look darker and more contrasty.

After importing the graded and rendered clips from davinci into premiere pro cc they look darker and more contrasty. I've checked the exported files from DaVinci and they look totally fine if you play them with any media player, but when I import them in Premiere Pro CC, they appear darker and way more contrasty than I've graded them in Resolve. Anyone have a solution for that?
    Thanks!
    Andrew

This is a long-standing and complicated issue.  To start with, different media players interpret footage differently.  You can hope for the best, but there can be no expectation that footage in one player will look the same in another.  Ridiculous, but true.  The situation is further aggravated by different display cards and different monitors, and no prevailing standards of how color and levels are interpreted.
In your specific case, you need to look at the waveforms, in Resolve and in PPro.  It sounds as if the blacks are being crushed in PPro, which could mean you're monitoring them at 64 in Resolve, but they're being output at 0 or remapped to 0 in PP.   This may also relate to whether you've monitoring with data or video levels in Resolve.
Is there a setting in PPro which covers how values are mapped, as data or video?  I think so, but just can't recall....  Anybody?  Staff?

  • 3D effect with color burn not rendering out. Please help.

    Hello,
I am rendering out a 3D effect using an adjustment layer with stroked lines. I have the transfer mode on these lines set to "classic color burn" because it's the look that I want. However when I render the effect out, the lines are almost invisible in the final render. I also have some lights in the scene and am using 3D element with a 3D object. Could the lights be causing a problem? I will attach a photo of the scene before and after render. Thanks in advance for any help!

Here are the pics. In the second set the rings almost disappear completely.

We can't know. We don't know the exact settings you used in the timeline nor any other details like what version of AE, what system and so on, since you haven't bothered to provide them. From your shapes not being properly pre-composed to issues with 3D render order and collapsed transformations there could be anything going on. We simply don't know based on your insufficient info.

How can I stop iMovie from making thumbnails of clips from past projects when first opening the program to digitize new clips for a new project. It takes forever for it and is very annoying. I have looked in the preferences and couldn't figure out what would disable this problem.

You do not need to move your cursor much when pressing the mouse button to cause the tab to tear-off/tear-away into a new tab. No "sensitivity" setting that I am aware of. The tab in the new window can be dragged back to the original window.
To disable the feature, install this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bug489729-disable-detach-and-t/

  • When I add my composition to the Adobe Media Encoder from After Effects, it renders out incorrectly?

Why is it that when I add my composition directly from after effects to the adobe media encoder, it renders out of the adobe media encoder incorrectly? By that I mean the video comes out a little scrambled- parts of it overlap other parts. Is this an issue with 'dynamic link'? Did I do something wrong? I'm working in CC.

I also don't understand what you are saying. What do you mean by "parts of it overlap other parts"? A screen shot might help.
What were your render settings in AME? (Format, Codec, data rate, etc.)
What is in your AE comp? If footage, tell us what format, codec, etc. Tell us what effects were used too.

Any footage I double-click or drag from the Project window to the Source monitor causes my video output to go out of sync. When I put the clips in the timeline, video goes back in sync and I'm able to view video output.  My monitors are connected to a Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt(9.7.5) via component and HDMI.
