Rented Movies problems on Apple TV

When trying to view a movie we rented, it would not play and gave us the message that it needs HCDP for playback, which has something to do with our HDMI? WHat is the reason it is not playing?

HDCP is a protection system that works within HDMI.
Content with HDCP protection will require the device that is playing the content (your tv) to check with the device that it is connected to (your display/tv) that it's not capable of recording the content and if it doesn't get an appropriate response from it will not send it a signal.
It sounds as though your display/tv is not HDCP compliant.

how do a get a refund on a ridiculously slow downloading rented movie for my apple tv dispite a >5mb/sec down load speed? my first experience with appletv movie rental. no good. rented at 4:30pm. still waiting for standard def movie to finish at 8:10pm. Not good enough.

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

to watch a rented movie on apple tv that you downloaded on your computer. You have to buy it to do this.

  • Can I set up a password for when renting movies from my Apple TV without having to sign out?

Can I set up a password when renting movies from my Apple TV without having to sign out?

Is there an issue just signing out?  It's a chore entering itunes store password sometimes I agree but there's no way to set a local password on AppleTV - though it's a good idea as you could have a simpler one than for itunes store.
Ordinarily I enter my password for rentals though AppleTV ususally asks if I want it to remember it automatically.  If you sign out and sign back in you should get the option.

  • I used to be able to watch a rented move on my Apple TV when it was partially downloaded.  Now it is making me wait till it is fully downloaded.  What changed?

when renting movies on my Apple TV, I used to be be able to start watching when only 1 or 2% downloaded.  Today it made me wait till it was fully downloaded in 2 hours.  Did something change?   Why do I have to wait?

Playback will start onice a portion has loaded, this will be indicated by the option to start now or watch later. If it continues to buffer during playback or there are other issues then that will be due to the network.

  • I cant move my rented movie to my apple tv first generation, i cant move my rented movie to my apple tv first generation

i cant move my rented movie to my apple tv 1st generation. keeps saying something about firewall but i dont have any security turned on... helppp

Kelly - If you just opened the AppleTV1, go to Settings>About and check the software version.
Last software made was 3.02 (one of the better ones).
If lower, update it to that, but make a note of what it shipped with in case you ever factory restore it.
Have you configured ATV1 for LAN/internet access (ethernet by simply plugging in, wi-fi by adding wi-fi details in settings).?  If connected to internet you should be able to access YouTube on it.
ATV1 does not use Home Sharing.  iTunes computer and AppleTV1 need to be on the same LAN.
To set it up for itunes use you must 'register' it with iTunes with a numeric code.  Ideally the main computer used with it should be registered for 'syncing'.  Have you added a computer iTunes library under the AppleTV's Settings>Computers menu?
You need to highlight the top entry on this page, press select which should give a numeric code.  You then go to itunes on the computer and look for an AppleTV under Devices on the left, select and enter the code.  You can then configure auto or custom syncing.
Once configured, locate the rental in iTunes and choose to 'move it' to the AppleTV.

  • Rented movie on my Apple Tv

Yesterday I have rented a movie from iTunes Store on my Apple Tv. But I can´t see it. When I choose to rent again, I get the information that it´s already been rented. I try searching after rented objekt but the movie doesn´t shows up in the rented list. Why can I not find the movie I´ve rented on my Apple Tv?
Today I rented another movie and it worked. I started to look a little bit and then turned i off for a break. Now I can´t find that movie!
I´m having the same problem like yesterday again. Why?
Our Internet connection is slow, so I have choose SD format on the Apple Tv. But it have worked before to rent movies, so I don´t know why it´s like this now?
    Anyone who knows?

    Hello Ellanda,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with the movies rented on your Apple TV.  I am sure you are eager to watch these movies, and I found a few resources that I think will help.
The first to verify is if you see the movie on the top shelf of the Movies panel on the Apple TV and then checking Settings to see if the download was interrupted in:
You can see all the movies you have rented on the top shelf of the main menu when navigating to Movies. Rented Movies will also indicate when they are due to expire. Once expired, they will no longer be available in your Movies shelf.
If your download is interrupted, go to Setting > iTunes Store and select Check for Rentals. Apple TV will connect with the iTunes Store and will resume downloading.
You can find the full article here:

If you are still not able to locate the rental, I recommend reporting the issue to the iTunes Store using the steps in the following article:

  • I can not rent movies on my Apple TV

I had been renting movies without incodent for the past three years or so but now, all of a sudden, can not...I have gone into my iTunes Store account and re-entered my billing info...a dozen times, to no avail...no problem buying music or apps..any help?

Some movies and tv shows that I purchased on the apple tv will no longer play. The movies and tv shows were watched then removed from the apple tv and stored on my computer because of the settings I had on itunes. I put some of the movies back on the apple tv and now only one, Quantum of Solace HD, works. The other movies and the tv shows give a message apple tv not authorized to play. I can still buy and rent movies on both my atv and computer. There have been no problems with the music that I purchased on either the apple tv or computer. Also the movies and tv shows can still be played on the computer without a problem.
Has anyone else had this problem with their atv? Is there any way to fix this problem?
Yes. I 'm adding this to the many problems I have experienced since the 3.0/3.01 "upgrade", as I have discussed in several threads here. I purchased "Up" last night, and it plays fine on my Mac. However, the Apple TV gives me the "not authorized" message. I rebooted the ATV, disconnected the HDMI, deauthorized/reauthorized my Mac which is streaming my content to the ATV and rebooted. I am running 2.2 (factory restore after the 3.0/3.0.1 fiasco) on my ATV, and iTunes 9.0.2, Mac OS 10.5.8. No success. Quantum of Solace plays fine, but Good Luck Chuck does not. What a freaking nightmare. This is the first time in my LONG history of Apple products that I have even wavered in my support. I used to sell Mac 512s in the 80's, and love the platform, have used Macs ever since. Apple TV is really starting to wear me down. I sincerely hope we see an upgrade soon but I'm really near the end of rope.

  • Renting Movie Problem

I tried renting a movie the other day and when I tried entering in id password it would not accept my apple id/password. Tried many different times and made sure I use proper case. Went back to computer and tried logging in with my apple id/password on itunes and had not problems logging in
Any ideas do you need to do something to enable your apple tv to rent movies?

Ok, since I couldn't find what the problem was in the forums, I called support. Here's what you do: 1. unplug the ATV and leave it alone for a few minutes, 2. go to your "iTunes" computer and de-authorize your computer from the "store" menu...and leave it alone for a few, 3. re-authorize your computer from the "store" menu, 4. plug in your ATV and make sure the settings are correct in the "iTunes Store" section of the settings menu. 5. Try your purchase again!!!
This repaired my problem and it was fairly easy. Apparently, all it needed was a reset/reboot or something. Call tech support if it doesn't work. Good luck!

  • Rent-Movie-Problem -1309

    Hey Communitie,
I've got a third time problems with Rent-Movies on iTunes.
I have the white MacBook from 2009 and all my stuff is updated!
I rent three movies on iTunes:
    - "Tron: Legacy" in September 2011
    - "John Carter" in May 2012
    - "Hunger Games" in August 2012
All movies stops exactly on 4GB with the default-message "-1309", that I don't have internet-connection, but this is not true, all other downloads (series, apps etc.) still working at the same time. So the Apple-Support must still delete the downloads from these rent-movies... nothing other I can do!
All other rent-movies I've done still works.
The same movies I've rent on my iPad and there still working too... So I don't understand, where is the problem on my MacBook.
    Can anyone help me?
Ich bin natürlich auch in Deutsch zu erreichen.
    Grüße

  • How can i watch a rented movie in my apple tv?

I rented a movie in iTunes and want to watch it in my apple TV.  I try to "drag" the movie to the apple TV under Devices, and can't seem to do it.  When I go to my shared movies in apple TV the rental is not there.  Does anyone know what I need to do?

I assume you are using the Apple TV 1 (silver/grey).
The rental needs to be transferred to the Apple TV. It sounds as though you have paired a secondary (streaming only) library only and you need a primary library to transfer content.

  • HT1657 can I play a rented movie on an Apple TV 2nd gen while downloading?

Can I play a rented movie from itunes on an Apple TV 2 while the movie is still downloading? I can watch it on the Mac that it is downloading on but the air play symbol does not appear to be apple to select the ATV. Does the movie have to completely download first?

There are a few other more ways to do the same thing but thats the easiest let me Know if you need more info .

  • Apple TV: Can I watch a rented movie on my Apple TV?

If I rent a movie from iTunes on my G5, would this movie be available to watch on either of my 2 TV, connected to the G5?
    Thank you.

I just searched for 'rental transfer' in the Apple Support pages and got this :-
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307257
    Specifically look for :-
Can I play my rental on more than one device?
If you download a rented movie on your computer, you can transfer it to your Apple TV, iPod, or iPhone. Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only be viewed on one device at a time. If you rent the movie on your Apple TV, it is not transferable to any other device and you must watch it on your Apple TV.

  • Rented Movies-Problem Error 5103 HELP!!

The error message that you describe is most likely caused by an incorrect date and time setting on your computer. If the date and time are not correct, you will not be able to access the movies you rented.
To change your computer's date and time, go to the Control Panel and enter the Date and Time category. Make the necessary adjustments so that the date and time are set automatically.
This is what iTunes Support is sending me. the date and time is set correctly and i keep getting this error. does anyone know of a way to fix this error

I have the same issue with rented movies and the ipod touch. It gets all the way to the end of the transfer then contacts iTunes store then BAM....
The rented movie "movie name" could not be transferred to the iPod "iPod name" because and unknown error occurred (5103)."
Reformatting the HD is an outragous fix. There has to be someone at apple that knows what is happening here. I get so frustrated talking to someone reading from a script. "reboot your computer", "reinstall iTunes", "but first you have to uninstall quicktime".... What happened to knowledgable support people??
It's almost 1:00 AM, I have a plane to catch in 5 hours, sure wish I could watch the movies I rented, paid for, downloaded, and can't move them to the player.
Never have cared much for apple, want to change my mind? FIX IT!
