Reopened iTunes deletes libraries and preferences.

I have problem with iTunes memory because it deletes libraries and preferences. Once I close and open it again everything's gone.... What's going on? Is it maybe Vistas fault?

HI again. installed and then uninstalled both Mackeeper and Blackberry with their software. Etrecheck still shows the same 'failed to load' error. Pasted below. Itunes deleted music and changed accounts

My itunes deleted my entire library of music, photos, videos etc. and when I attempted to sync with ipod to restore music it states that my ipod is synced with another itunes and wants to delete my ipod. The only thing that I can think of that may have caused this, is someone charged their Iphone with my computer, however it was not allowed to sync with my computer. lease tell me how I can recover my music and sync my Ipod with my Itunes without deleting all my music, photos, videos etc thats already on my ipod?

You can control what is synced from your library to your iDevice very easily. When the device is connected, selected in the sidebar in iTunes (press Ctrl-S to enable the sidebar if you don't see it) then click on the Music tab. This gives a range of options from copying the whole library to restricting the sync operation to copy specific songs, albums, artists, or playlists. I find the last of these most useful, so that I can have one or more playlists that I can update so that their contents are synced the next time I connect a specific iDevice,
On your second issue, you should be aware that - unless you make some configuration changes:
each Windows user account on a PC has a separate iTunes library
any iDevice can only be synced with one iTunes library at a time - and when it detects a different library it'll remove any previously loaded media as part of the sync operation
Therefore, when you created a new Windows user you also created a new iTunes library, and even though you copied some content over your iPhone recognized the "user 2" library as new. Unless you want to reconfigure your PC to share library content between different user accounts (and though this can be done, its the whole library that's shared, not parts of it) your best bet is to switch back to the original user account and learn how better to control what is selected when you sync your iPhone.
If you see that there is:
music missing from your iTunes library that you think should be there, and/or
music on your iPhone that isn't in the library on the PC
report back - there are ways to address both situations.

ITunes content removed and preferences reset

I had iTunes opened up a couple hours ago and closed out of it like I normallly do. I just tried to open it up again and all content from iTunes was gone. There was no music in the library, no movies, no podcasts. I looked in preferences and everything was reset to the original settings. The library name was incorrect, the selected sources were incorrect and some options in the "advanced" tab were incorrect. Nobody had access to my computer from the last time I used it until now. How do I restore it back to how it was a few hours ago?

Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to a recent state.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.

Can I run two separate ITune Accounts & Libraries and ipods on one computer

I have a friend visiting for a month and they want to use their IPod Nano and ITunes account on my computer. i.e. purchase and download their own songs via Itunes, sync with their Ipod etc. the same way they would on their own home computer, while they are here.
I already have Itunes installed on my computer for my own IPod Shuffle, and related account for buying music etc. and want to continue to sync my Ipod through my own account of course
Is there a way I can have both of these Ipods functioning fully with separate Itune accounts and libraries on my computer? How do I do this?

OK.... I've ran into a problem and don't know how to proceed with this.
The 2nd user is set up with their ITunes account and we have successfully purchased a few songs.
What I expected to do was sync their Ipod and have the songs already on their IPod copy into the "new" Library we just set up. However, indications are that if I use "sync", it will erase the songs presently on the IPod and then only put back the few new songs we just purchased. (I tried a few other things but cannot get the songs from the IPOD into the ITunes Library or any other folder to preserve them)
1. If it is even possible, how do I get the songs off the IPod into the newly established Library?
2. If I indeed cannot sync the IPOD / Library - how do I get the newly purchased songs from the Library to the IPOD without erasing the songs already on the Ipod.

Why can't my latest iTunes delete bonjour and quicktime?

When downloading or updating itunes it says that lastest bonjor cannot be delete and quicktime cant be delete also which then quicktime cant be downloaded which then itunes cant.

Help with iTunes 7 - Libraries and audio books

Hi,
New to these forums and just awaiting receipt of my first Ipod Nano. Couple of queries as I'm trying to get iTunes loaded up ready.
If I buy an audio book from ITunes Store, will it come in same format as a CD version in terms of its track file types/names etc? Reason I ask is that I'm burning my CD version of 'The Da Vinci Code' onto iTunes. By default it's going into 'Music' and there are about 150+ 'tracks'. That will clog up my Music folder a lot.
I can't get it to go under 'Audio Books' at all which would seem to be a better place for it, or is that not how the Library works? No matter what I do I can't seem to shift the tracks from Music but I can of course put them all under a playlist entitles 'Da Vinci Code'.
No major problem as, once I've heard it once, I'll delete it anyway but it seems odd that there is an 'Audiobook' library but not one you are able to put books transferred from CD into?.
I suspect that the books bought from iTunes are put together differently with different file name suffixes that lets iTunes identify them as books and that any book copies to iTunes from CD will show as music. If not, how do I get books under Audiobooks in the Library???
I did try converting all the files to aac but even that doesn't affect it.
Am contemplating getting one of these Rough Guide iTunes/Ipod books but figure it may be a bit of a waste for what is probably fairly simple. That said, the iTunes 'Help' is far from exhaustive (or in parts useful).
Any help appreciated.

Itunes deleted songs and apps

When I plugged my IPod in to get updated and when I took it out all my songs and apps were deleted and when I went to my itunes library , none of the songs or apps I bought were in there.

ITunes Multiple Libraries and iCloud.

I currently have two separate iTiunes libraries. One 'home' library (mainly music) stored on an external HD (my Time Capsule) and one 'work' library (mainly language CDs and downloaded Podcasts) held on my Macbook Pro. I use the same Apple ID for both.
I would want to continue to keep these separate in the future, and I am concerned that iCloud implementation, with automatic synchronisation, might try to 'mix' the two.
Does anyone know if maintaining separate libraries like this is still posssible with iCloud??

Assuming each library uses the same iTunes account, iTunes match will amalgamate all your content.

SEPARATION of Itunes Accounts, libraries, and separate iclouds...HELP!

my wife and I have separate itunes accounts.we have separate music on our ipods, and iphones...every time we sync to the cloud something somewhere gets screwed up...contacts, music, apps etc. How do we set up separate accounts to keep things separate?
I am sorry if this isnt clear...
We just bought another ipad 2 for her birthday. Will the Cloud only sync one user? Is there a way to either combine it all, or just make it simple for her to have her own stuff? She doesn't want or need all of the apps I have...and certainly the music is different...

ITunes stopped working and now all of my apps for my iPhone and half of my music is gone. How do I get it all back?

I've recently upgraded to an iPhone 5, I had just restored my old iPhone 4 to its original settings while listening to my music. When that was finished I plugged my new phone in and I had an error message pop up saying "iTunes has stopped working" and had to close it. When I reopened iTunes all of my apps for my phone were gone along with half of my music library. The only music I have left are the albums I have downloaded the rest is gone. I closed and reopened iTunes several times and got the same message each time.
I have music and apps on the phone which will not transfer back to iTunes. All iTunes does is ask if I wan't to delete the music on my phone and sync with the library........ silly question really as half of the music in the library is gone!
I have been using iTunes for many years now and this is the first time I have seen an error such as this. Can anyone tell me how to restore my library to the same as it was? I have fixed the "iTunes has stopped working" issue and would like my music and apps back.

Error 42408 with iTunes 10.3 and can't Uninstall?

I can't buy music, play purchased downloads or authorise my computer. I have tried all of the methods posted here, such ejecting and reconnecting iPod, replacing the shortcut, rebooting my laptop, closing and reopening itunes, logging in and out again of my itunes account, removing SC info folder and the .plist files/version without extension and I am at my wits end with this.
The only thing I haven't tried is reinstalling because I can't uninstall iTunes and the change/repair options in add/remove hardware don't work either. I left it for hours trying to uninstall and it stuck on "preparing to remove."
I have Windows Vista 32 bit and am in the administrators account, if that is any help.

Understanding libraries and files

Help me understand the difference in itunes between libraries and files. I have a 250 gig harddrive on my pc and its almost full. It shouldn't be near that full.
My ipod indicates about 50 gig of music which is about right. I think I have duplicate (or triplicate) files and or libraries on my laptop.
How do I clean it all up?

An iTunes library comprises of a database with some supporting files and an artwork cache, plus a media folder. Take a look at this post for some background. Ideally all your media should be in your media folder, and iTunes should be connected to everything in the media folder. Depending on how you have added content to the library and the settings for "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" it is possible for there to be duplicate orginal copies of files outside of the media folder. It is also possible to accidentaly create duplcates within the media folder though these are more likely to be obvious within iTunes.
What is the size of your iTunes Media folder? How does that compare to the sum of your content in iTunes for Music, Movies, Podcasts etc.?
If you have dupes within iTunes then I've written a script called DeDuper for deduping automatically. See this thread for background.

Correct. You don't use iTunes to get photos off the iPhone.

I deleted the backup on itunes, synced again and got the error message: itunes could not back up the iphone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iphone

I am using iphone 3GS, after syncing for few times and got the errors. I deleted the backup from Edit-> Preferences-> Devices. I closed iTunes & manually deleted the file which was still stored locally even though it didn't display in Preferences. I have vista so I went to
C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync and deleted everything in the Backup folder (though I left the folder as is). If you have a different OS search the apple website for the backup location.
I reopened iTunes & Synced with out a problem. I also got the update to install.
