Reorganizing images in LR

I have my images (about 20K) imported in LR catalog, but I would want to reorganize (i.e. move) then in to year/month/date folder system on HD. If I try to create new catalogue and import images from HD, then I can get LR to create this structure, but I am loosing all my collections, flags, etc. If I import images from LR catalog, LR will not create new folder structure.
Is there a way to reorganize images without loosing LR catalogue information?
Thank you,
Vadim
PS: I am running LR on Vista

Create your top-level folder outside of Lightroom; place a single picture in it, and in your existing catalogue, import this single picture. (if it is already in the catalogue, you may need to delete it from the catalogue before importing.)
You will now see a new top level folder in Lightroom. You can then create sub-folders within it and move pictures to new sub-folders using drag-and-drop. That way, you will preserve your current catalogue information. This is one way to do what you want, there may be other ways.

  • Is it possible Bridge ruins images while making thumbnails?

    This morning I was reorganizing images.
    I use Bridge to check the files.
    I noticed when Bridge was making CR2 thumbnails several of them appeared stripped of some if not most of the pixels.
    I opened one image in Camera raw and became afraid the image was actually now ruined.
    In Canon Digital Professional, the thumbnail looks fine, but in Digital Pro Preview they also are ruined.
    I went to my external backup to find the same images were ruined!
    The thumbnails looked great as Bridge was regenerating them, but as soon as it was finished the images was stripped.
    It seems logical the images were ruined when I downloaded them from the camera, otherwise they would be different in both files.
    I usually download twice rather than copy one to the backup, but I do not remember now.
    I am sure I have looked at these May 2014 images many times and they were fine!
    Help! I am afraid to use Bridge to help with 6 years of photos!

  • How can I organize my files in files panel;images, videos etc?

    I am begining to have a lot of files in my files panel. I have a folder for images but when I put the images there dreamweaver does not know where to find them, even though I specified this when setting up.  I am now begining to get a lot of videos and would like to organize the files a lot better. any ideas?  thanks

    If you already have links to your images and videos, etc., and you want to rearrange them, do it in your Files Panel, not your computer file manager system. Most of your links will remain appropriate, even if you make (in the Files Panel) new folders to store different types of files in. You can drag and organize to your heart's content in the Files Panel.
    You will still want to check your links, as Gary states, but the actual reorganizing...when done with already linked files in the Files Panel...will make the checking less painful and require fewer re-linkings.
    In fact, the only html file that actually NEEDS to remain at the root level is the index.html default file. You can safely store the rest in subfolders. If you have many, many pages, you might consider organizing them into folders and adding index.html pages to each subfolder. Not a copy of your main index file, of course, but 'departmental' default files. That system will also make applying javascript "breadcrumbs," such as those of Kaosweaver, quite simple, as it uses index.html filenames for breadcrumbs.
    You will want to carefully keep files that are auxiliary to Flash and Video files with their Flash and Video files, and be sure to test the links and locations of those files thoroughly. But there's no real reason you can't move them.

  • No images in Safari 5.1.2

    I'm running OS X 10.7.2.  I was doing some housekeeping & reorganizing on my iMac and in the process reset Safari for the first time to clean out all the garbage.  I empty the cache and tweak things regularly, however this was the first itme I have reset the application since I installed Lion.  Now when I launch Safari it is unable to load any images for any websites.
    I quit & restarted the application, no change.  Then I reinstalled the flash and Java plugins from the Apple webiste, no change.  Then I used MacKeeper to "smart uninstall" all the BS & 3rd party trial apps I've downloaded in the last 24 hours, no change.  Then I downloaded the safari .dmg file from apple and reinstalled Safari w/out uninstalling the original application hoping it would fill in the gaps, which forced me to restart, no change.
    One of my chores tonight was to start a fresh backup schedule (iMac to TC & External to external).  During this process I shuffled around a few TB of files from my HD to external drives, reset my Time Capsule to its default settings & deleted my previous time machine backups to free up the drive.  Because of this I was afraid to uninstall Safari prior to installing from the Apple website b/c I wasn't sure if that was the smartest thing to do w/out a lion backup disk and no previous TC backup.  Time Machine just finished its first backup , but there isnt anything to restore to prior to the reset.  Now i am assuming the Safari reset is what caused this problem to occur, because that's the only thing I did other than clean out the dock and shuffle media files around.
    Currently I have the .pkg folder for Safari Lion on my dektop. I am going to make a Lion thumb drive now in case my only option is to uninstall, reboot and do a fresh install through disk utility. Does anyone know what might be causing this?  I am using Chrome right now to type this, and everything is normal when using the chrome browser. Same with Firefox.  However I hate using both of these browsers.  Thank you for your time.

    Start by removing the MacKeeper trojan, which may be the cause of your problem.
    Although not generally recognized as such, MacKeeper is in fact a trojan, because the developer distributes an uninstaller that purports to delete it, but leaves behind something that causes popup ads to appear in the user’s web browser. Try following the instructions here:
    how to uninstall MacKeeper « Phil Stokes
    I can't personally vouch for the accuracy of those instructions, but others seem to have had success with them.

  • Need advice on how to export ALL images including any changes (Versions)

    I have well over 15000 RAW ORF Olympus images in Aperture with approximately 10000 of them in the database and the rest as references to the file on the file system.
    My problem is 'many' fold...
    First I am frustrated with using Aperture only because it doesn't seem to perform well anymore either because I have too many files, the database is corrupted, DB IO is slow... I don't know but its not performing as it did when I started using it and I don't know what to do to fix it... so with that said here are a few options I am pursuing and the problems I am having doing so.
    I am moving to Adobe Bridge and Photoshop CS4, however with most of the files in the Aperture database I need to have them exported... however the only options are Master and or Version, which is frustrating because if I choose Master I get the original RAW file less all the changes done to any versions and if I choose the version I get customized JPEG's less the RAW master file. huh! I would like if possible some other options but I can understand if they don't exist.
    1. One option would be to get all the masters (which I can do now) but only if they are in the database and not referenced.
    2. Second option only would be to get all the versions if the RAW was modified and not export a version for a selected image if it does not exist.
    3. Third, have some way to only selected actual modified version images and not every image in a folder or in the database.
    4. Export to Photoshop .psd format with layers instead of versions?
    5. Filter by files in the database and files that are referenced.
    6. ... I'm open to other suggestions.
    Is there a way to move all the database files back to file referenced to shrink the Database or do I need to export everything and then re-import them as references?
    The export process for so many files is killing me as its taking me days and days and I have no way to cross check to ensure all the files and versions are retained when exported - I'm not sure what I have or how to rebuild them in Aperture at a later time once exported?
    I am exporting the sidecar file with every image but am not sure the value or significances of this file - can this file help when moving to Photoshop/Bridge?
    BTW. Another reason I wish to move from having Aperture manage my files in its database is I have now lost a few hundred unrecoverable pictures for no known reason in aperture, once after a trap as I was processing a image, I lost all of my sisters funeral shots - so so sad.
    Help!!!

    Something is very very very wrong - 15,000 images are nothing, unless you have them all in one project. I have 300,000+ with no issues in performance. Another indicator is days to export 15,000. Don't blame Aperture - you have a giant problem.
    I am not going to address how to do what you want exactly because I do not have the time but here are some hints -
    You can search for adjusted versions, and you can search for managed vs. referenced (file status). You may want to think about using relocate master with some clever subfolder options/selections to put all of you original masters and any external edited masters (PSD, etc) into a nice neat hierarchy for you to browse via bridge - Aperture is fantastic at reorganizing directory structures via relocate masters.
    There is no way to export adustments+RAW that Photoshop can interpret. If you want the Aperture non-destructive adjustments you must export versions end of story.
    Personally I would figure out why you are having such issues with Performance - there is a cause and it will probably give you issues no matter what you are using down the road.

  • Strange image problem

    Hello all,
    I encountered an odd problem today.
    I have a simple artist website. Today I reorganized it and created an additional basic page for links using an existing page of mine as a template.
    For some reason, my background image would not show on my live page.  I tried many times, eventually creating a fresh html document to start from scratch, but it still wouldn't show.  As far as I know, I'm doing this the exact same way as my other pages whose images still work fine.
    I eventually gave up on a background image and compromised by inserting a different picture directly onto the page.  Doesn't get much simpler.  Even this wont show on my live site!
    I'm getting really frustrated...can anyone tell what I may be doing wrong?
    Below is my code.  I've modified the addresses of the actual links on display (people's names), it is otherwise a direct c&p.
    Thanks!

    yes I see the same page when I go direct to the picture's address.
    I must admit I'm not familiar with htaccess files.  But I'm not trying to create an image link or anything like that.  I just want the image to display on the top of the page with the links underneath as they appear now.
    Originally I wanted a background image like my other pages but that too disappeared on my live site.
    I just created a new jpg, different name, uploaded and got the same result.

  • How to prevent PDF presets to alter image quality

    In experimenting with various PDF presets, I noticed that with grayscale images in Photoshop, saving as PDFs using different presets, alters image quality, specifically the contrast.
    Therefore, it seems like saving an image in the "wrong" PDF preset could undo a lot of prepress work. Is there a better way/format?
    To get a crude idea: there is an 8.7% decrease in the percent black between 10% and 50% values (the range) on a step wedge between the original in Photoshop and the HighQuality PDF, which showed the same values, and the PDF/X-1a, which compressed the range by 4 percentage points (approximately a 8.7% decrease).
    A visual, and idiosyncratic, assessment of four versions of the same image  (Photoshop grayscale, High Qualtiy PDF, PDF/X-1a, and PDF/X-3), which included a step wedge and color ramp, would rank the fidelity to the original from best, HighQuality, to worst, PDF/X-1a.
    The same grayscale image in Photoshop CS6 was distilled (File > Print > Adobe PDF) to PDFs using unmodified PDF presets in Acrobat XI distiller.
    The following composit screen shot (all four images on the screen, screen print, reorganizing them, then reducing the image to a 120 dpi at 4.2" wide (including text) gives some idea of the differences, but a lot got lost getting it here.
    Walton

    I do a lot of work with print-on-demand books (design and formatting), and I am active on the CreateSpace (the p-o-d division of Amazon.com). Although CS will accept work in virtually any PDF preset or origin (doPDF, cutePDF, etc.), PDF/X-1a is the recommended format, and for other companies it is the only accepted preset.
    Here is the dumb question:
    On the monitor (as the screen shot shows) the four images (PS, HQ PDF, PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-4) appear quite different: i.e. my video/monitor system is representing the images differently.
    A screen shot of all four images on the screen at the same time, then with the info window open in Photoshop, I assessed their CMYK values in the exact same places on each image (lining the images up, using the measure tool and  guidelines, measuring at high magnification); here (the color original followed by the original grayscalse conversion) are the black values (C00 M00 Y00 K1-100):
    The images display differently, and those displays measure differently.
    When I view the PDF images, they appear differently, but if i measure them (Output Preview set to Dot Gain 20%) the K values are the same.
    When the same image is prepared using different PDF presets (a previous set of test using different images and looking for something different) they will print (printed in a black & white book by CreateSpace) differently.
    How can one predict how a grayscale image will print? How can one prepare it and safely convert it to PDF?

  • PSE 11 Organizer shows broken images on almost all jpgs

    1. I spent three days reorganizing all of my 90,000+ photos, putting them in hierarchical date ordered folders on my Windows 7 PC with 16GB RAM, lots of HD space on my second HD E (recently installed from an older laptop but with 700GB, 60% available).
    2. I rebuilt a new catalog using just the new folders of the 90k plus images.
    3. The first time I tried to rebuild the catalog, Organizer crashed with an "unusual runtime error".
    4. I broke the rebuild down into three smaller pieces adding new folders of 30k images at a time and by midnight last night I had a new catalog.
    5. Bring up the new catalog this morning and most of the images show a broken image. I can edit the jpgs, save them, etc in the editor, etc.
    6. I've turned off face recognition, checked for errors in the catalog (none but corrected anyway). Show all files. Reset editor preferences. None of this helps.
    7. All RW2 files show up, some PSD files do and some do not. Same with JPG's - a very few appear and most show a broken image.
    8. The first time I scrolled through the images, trying to see anything, Organizer would show the image briefly, then go to a broken image.
    9. The "Location" link to the file (I just discovered this) in the Information tab on the right, show the correct file location and that file (which can be edited after all) is just fine. Windows shows the file.
    10. If you edit a file from Organizer, the broken image is repaired. So, a workaround would be to put all 90k images into the PSE editor. I don't think I have that much time...
    11. Task Manager shows 40% CPU and 40% memory usage, btw.
    Ideas, please?

    Also, I am now trying to install PSE 12. One of the first instructions is to click Install Adobe Photoshop Elements in the Adobe Photoshop Elements dialog box. When I insert my disc in my DVD drive I don't get a PSE dialog box at all, just the Windows Autoplay dialog box asking what I would like to do with this disc. I can't believe I'm having to ask a question about installing a program from a disc! I'm pretty sure it's just me...

  • Made a big mistake - reorganized with Windows Explorer

    Even though I knew better, I suffered for a momentary loss of memory and reorganized most of my images in Windows Explorer.
    I have been tracking down lost files for a couple of days now.  Is there any wholesale way of recovering from this screwup?

    First, don't make the problem any worse
    Stop moving files around in Explorer
    Get using keywords in LR
    Do not use Synchronize or Import to get yourself out of trouble
    Now,
    How many missing files are there?
    Click the question marks on folders before you do the question marks on thumbnails
    Can you resolve the question marks over a period, as and when you need to use the files?

  • Image Slider Question

    So this is my HTML. I am using a JS image slider.
    I am trying to get the image slider to be full screen and scale to 100% in the window. Weither it is full screen or smaller.
    The width works perfectly, but when i make the height 100% it doesnt work..  px's work fine, but thats not exactly what i want to have.
    Here is the CSS

    I have used this in the past to get 100% height, I don't know if there's anything inherantly wrong with it, it validates, so at least there's that.
    Adding in style="height:100%;" to the <html><body> and any other parent element of the one you want to be 100% will make it 100% of the window size. It takes a little reorganizing/positioning if you have something you want to be 100% burried too far into other elements.
    Here's an example...
    <!DOCTYPE html>
    <html style="height:100%;">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <title>Todd is 100 Percent</title>
    </head>
    <body style="margin:0; height:100%;">
        <div style="height:100%;">
            <div id="todd" style="height:100%;  background-color:blue;">some stuff</div>
        </div>
    </body>
    </html>
    In this example, the todd div will be 100% of the window size. If you add any content before todd though, you may want to reorganize the layout because todd will stay 100% even after it's dropped down the page by other content, so you can end up with a scroll bar vertically.
    EDIT: Had wrong doctype.

  • Help in Getting Archived Images Organized Before Import

    I'm a LR beginner and need advice. I have about 3000 tiff and psd images - about 75Gb, archived on CD and DVD in pretty random order. They aren't on my hard drives. I've kept track of them through iView. Now I want to bring them into Lightroom and use it rather than iView for keeping track of them. I'm also coming to recognize that keeping them online on an external HD is probably a good thing also.
    I'm thinking I should get an external HD (250Gb or so) and copy from CD/DVD back to that device. Then organize them into folders in some way that makes sense. Then once I've done that, import them into LR and tag them with keywords. Then split out further into collections.
    Does this make sense? I'd appreciate your thoughts and experiences.
    Thanks
    Brad

    Obviously you are going to get much better import performance if your images are on a HD rather than a CD/DVD.
    You don't say if you're using Mac or PC, but if it's a Mac, you can do what I am doing. I had previously archived my images to CD and DVD. I use the Mac's Disk Utility program to create a copy of the disk image on the external HD. Then I mount that and have LR import from the disk image.
    What this means is that I can use either the original CD/DVD or the external HD files. Once I mount the volume, LR will find the images (red folders come online). This way you have your backup automatically on CD or HD and if you are mobile, you can take either media with you. At home base all your images are on the HD, just a mount away.
    If you do this, when creating the disk image in Disk Utility, make sure to choose the 'CD/DVD Master' setting (rather than compressed or other options) because they mount much faster.
    Again, this is all the way Mac works, not something specific to LR. I don't know of a Windows equivalent, but there may be something out there.
    This doesn't help you with reorganizing as part of your import process, but keywording and collections could do that regardless of the location of the files.

  • Can I delete the folder in the vault drive called "images deleted from Aperture Lib" ?

    I am reorganizing and separting my main Aperture library into smaller libs...in my vault drive there is a folder (always been there) that is called "images deleted from Aperture library"...it contains the images I deleted after emptying the Aperture trash. It is large (200Gig) and I want to delete it in finder (put in the trash then delete it...is this a safe practice? Thanks...Steve

    Yes.
    When you delete photos from Aperture that are in a vault, the next time you update the vault, the images from the vault will be moved to that folder.  You can delete it as you see fit... it's your last and final chance to decide if you didn't want to delete a file

  • HELP Desktop reorganized, file split into 10 different pieces -- any way to revert without losing anything? Urgent!

    HELP!
    I was showing a friend/client how to take a screenshot of a section of the screen (cmd+shift+4), but I accidentally pressed ctrl+cmd+4 and perhaps a few others (mistake due to using non-apple keyboard with mine), which reorganized her very cluttered but very purposeful desktop!
    She was rather upset. It also placed all the files that wouldn't fit in a row beneath her hard-drive icon. Understandably, this is frustrating for her; but what made it worse is that a very important document (is it PDF, .Doc? I don't know...) is, she claims, in TEN PIECES! How is this possible?
    I think those are just leftover pieces and the main file is there somewhere, but I haven't heard from her -- this happened yesterday afternoon -- and I don't know if she's even used the finder to locate it (does she remember the name of the file?) -- and now she's going to visit the Apple store, and hoping they can do something for this dilemma!
    They can revert to a previous state, but then she might lose recent files.
    Is there any way (even intensive) to undo this re-organization of her desktop?
    What is the explanation of the important file splitting into ten pieces (apparently from accidentally re-organizing her desktop or pressing a combination of cmd, shift, ctrl, alt, and 4)? Is there any simple way to undo either of these? (I'd gladly suggest a program for her to use to combine pieces of a PDF file or images into a .doc, but at this point, understandably, she is wary of my help. I still want to know what's going on, nevertheless.)
    Thank You All!

    No way I know of to undo an arrange.  And I've never heard of files being broken into pieces, whether PDF, DOC, or other.

  • Any gotchas for encrypted disk images?

    I am about to set up e-bills and e-statements at various banks and credit cards and wanted to check a couple of things before doing something that may end up being bad
    The assumption I am going with, is I will create an encrypted disk image to store all the PDF's.
    1. Is that the right thing to do? Or is there a better way to keep the data secure?
    2. If I do so, what is the backup impact? Can I simply set up a task to copy and paste the entire disk image to my external drive?
    3. If I want to open the disk image on another computer, can I? How will it authenticate the user/pass on a different computer?
    4. I can backup an encrypted disk image to a FAT-formatted external drive?
    5. And finally, I have read disclaimers that if I forget the password the data is lost irretrievably. But also, that the password is stored in keychain. So if the password is stored in keychain, the worst-case scenario can only happen if I forget the master password, right? I don't need to truly remember the password to the disk image necessarily, right?

    baltwo wrote:
    Your profile info indicates that you're running Tiger. If so, post to those forums. If you're running Leopard, update your profile info. What are you trying to protect and from who? Is your computer secure?
    IIRC, encrypted disk image passwords are independent from Keychain Access. So if you forget it, then you're hosed. BTW, that's the major failing with encrypted anything. If you forget the password, you're hosed. If the disk image gets corrupted, it's useless with or without the password. Anything stored in an encrypted disk image needs to be backed up in an unencrypted state and stored in some kind of physical thing like a safe. Methinks your a bit paranoid. Disable auto-login, use high-level passwords (that you remember), don't enable the root user account or activate a master password, and you should be secured enough.
    I updated the profile. I am running Leopard. So this is the correct forum.
    What am I trying to protect? I thought I put it in the first line - statements from banks and credit cards.
    From whom? From unwanted entities who may get access to my computer, in any way.
    I didn't get the part about the safe. Can I or can I not back up an encrypted disk image to an external drive "as is"? What about possibly opening it up on another computer? And how about putting it on a FAT-formatted disk? I repeat my original questions, but for a reason - they seem to have not been answered.
    I do not have auto-login, and I remember my strong login password. I don't have my root account enabled. Under this scenario you think my data is going to be secure? What about if someone were to get control of my computer? Forgive me on this one, I am a switcher so there is a general paranoia about such things which I would like to clarify before reorganizing my life.

  • Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermark issue

    Admin Note: This thread has been reorganized for escalation purpose -  using ajpot's info for escalation since he was the first to respond to my request of collecting information.
    I've got the ghosting issue on my yoga as well.  It was OK for the first few weeks (no noticeable ghosting at all) but now it only takes around a minute of having something on screen for ghosting to appear when switching to something else.
    I'm in the process of sending my yoga in for repair as I'm experiencing some other issues, so I've asked them to repair the screen as well.  From what I've read, it's likely they won't be able to fix it (in which case I'll be asking for a refund) but I'll see how it goes.
    Machine: ThinKPad Yoga

    As amirvf mentioned this is a common issue and there is an active discussion about it over at http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo/731068-lenovo-thinkpad-yoga.html Here is a quick recap:TPY uses a 12.5" LG Philips panel that has really, REALLY bad case of image retention (ghosting)The ghosting is not permanent and is actually specific to the way LCD panels work and present on all panels, but usually it's so minor that it is not noticeable to the naked eye. In case of those LG Philips panels, however, the effect is VERY noticeable.Lenovo has a page explaining the general issue: http://support.lenovo.com/de_DE/detail.page?DocID=HT051485The easiest way to check for this is via http://www.marco.org/rmbp-irtest.html (this is a test that was made for MBPro that had ghosting issues, but it works great for testing TPY too)The same panel is used in Dell XPS 12 and there is a long thread on Dell forums complaining about the issue: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19497269.aspxThe problem is inherent to the process/chemistry used in the panels and cannot be solved via software/driver update. (Although some support representatives will direct you to partial solutions that flash different colors and can alleviate the issue but only marginally). To fix this issue panel manufacturer (LG Philips) would have to modify it's tech process and a replacement panel would have to be installed. The bad news are that currently there is no solution (AFAIK). They can swap your panels to your heart's delight, but currently there are not panels available that do not exhibit the issue (You should note, however, that the issue is usually less pronounced on a new panel and is gradually amplified over a course of first several weeks, so if you have on-site support and if you/Lenovo are willing, you could theoretically swap your panels every two weeks or so to approximate a real solution). Also note that the market for 12.5" panels is relatively small and there is no real competition, so there is no strong incentive for LG Philips to fix anything (XPS 12 has been suffering from this for over a year now, even through a model refresh)The good news are that Dell has finally acknowledged the issue and are saying that LG Philips has fixed the panels and new batch is coming around February, plus some people have reported that their newly bought XPS 12 does not exhibit ghosting. So, assuming this is indeed so, new panels should trickle down to TPY owners too sometimes. I'd love to see an official acknowledgement/response from Mark on this...
