Repartitioning Hard drive

The hard drive on my G5 is split into two partitions. When I installed Tiger from Panther, only my start up disc partition "C "received the upgrade. The other half which I labeled "MacHD" has a copy of the last updated Panther OS 10.3.4. I was under the impression that when you updated to a new operating system that it read both partitions and upgraded automatically. My question is this: If I wanted to erase the "MacHD" partition and combine it with the "C" partition and not lose anything on my "C" partition, How do I do that? My Tiger discs are in another part of the country. I travel quite a bit. Is there a way to do it inside disc utility? Would I be Better off upgrading to Leopard and reconfiguring form that install disc?

Hello angelboy11, and a warm welcome to the forums!

Nope, you would have had to to it twice, or clone the upgraded one to the non-updated one.
If I wanted to erase the "MacHD" partition and combine it with the "C" partition and not lose anything on my "C" partition, How do I do that?
Very dangerous under the best of circumstances, a Backup or Clone is strongly advised... unless you don't mind losing everything, in which case it's easy.
Would I be Better off upgrading to Leopard and reconfiguring form that install disc?
Leopard can supposedly do that, but A. I think you have to erase one partition first, and B. I've not yet heard of anyone doing it, (doesn't mean much, since we normally only hear of problems), I've been meaning to try it.. I just did, don't see nything that says other tan repartion will destry everything!?

You can also use a product like Micromat Disk Studio to perform this function (or any other repartitioning) without reformatting your drive:

  • Repartition Hard drive- Bootcamp?

    Hey,
My brother has had my Imac g5 for the last 6 months as I have a Macbook Pro- I have just got it back from him as I want to sell it but when I went to reboot it I discovered that he has partitioned the hard drives but one of the is called Bootcamp which I believe is something to do with Windows. All I want to do is get rid of the bootcamp partition and have the one 160gb mac hard drive.
Does anyone know how I can do this?
    Thanks folk!

Good question since you cannot use Boot Camp on a G5, only on Intel Macs. I'm not sure what he would have done to create a Boot Camp partition, but you can try this:
Open Boot Camp Assistant in the Utilities folder. You should have an option to remove the Windows partition. Select that option and remove the partition. The drive should be returned to its normal capacity.

I am running Windows Server 2003 with Raid 5 originally partioned into C and D drives. OS is on the c drive with only 10GB of space. The drive currently has two partitions on it, one for my iMac time machine and one for my MacBook Pro time machine. When I try to repartition this drive in Disk Utility I get the error message:
    "Partition failed with the error:
Could not modify partition map because filesystem verification failed"
I need to clear some storage space on my internal MacBook drive and I really don't want to spend money on another external disk when I have over 500 GB just sitting there empty. I would just write directly to the current partitions but OSX flips out when you try to save random files straight to a Time Machine formatted disk.

This seems to be a common question and problem around these parts. I am certain one of the resident geniuses will soon be responding.
While we both wait for that to happen, you may find some helpful information by doing a search for "repartition hard drive" or "repartition time machine" in that little search box just to the right. There seems to be lots of good information there.
But remember that monkeying around with partitioning is not without risk, and we are talking about your Time Machine backups here.
    Be careful and good luck.

  • Best way to repartition external hard drive to give Time Machine more space

I have my external 2 TB hard drive segmented into 2 equal 1 TB partitions. The first partition is my time machine back-ups. The second is media files.
I also have approx 500GB of storage left on my 1 TB internal Mac HD. I keep receiving an error message that Time Machine cannot complete because it needs more file size. I have 185 GB available and it needs 225 GB.
I realize TM needs additional space to process back-ups; but what is my best option for re-partitioning my external HD since my first partition is used for TM? Or can I make TM work without repartitioning? Any suggestions?

See the pink box in #C4 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
It sounds like there ought to be room on the TM partition, though. Are you sure there's nothing else there, besides the backups for that Mac? See #A1 in Troubleshooting for a handy widget that will display the backup messages from your logs. Navigate to the first time it failed, copy and post them here.
Repartitioning will be tricky. How much stuff is on the second partition? It's possible you can split it, copy the data from it to the new partition, then delete the second one and expand the TM partition into the empty space. See #4 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum).

  • How can I repartition my hard drive?

I have a 2008 MacBook Pro, and last night, it suddenly restarted. When starting it again, it stayed on the grey screen with the Apple logo. Following a support page provided by Apple, I tried the following:
    1. Start the Mac in safe mode
    2. Reset the PRAM
To no avail. Then I restarted it, and held Command and R, and it went into disk utility. There, when Repairing my hard drive, Dis Utility told me to back-up the drive and repartition it.
I tried to back the disk up to a flash drive, but I got the error "The Source Could not be validated"
Then I proceeded to repartition the disk anyways, but I am confused on how to. I'm scared that if I erase the disk, Mac OSX will be gone, and I won't be able to use my computer.
    I have two questions:
    1. How can I backup my disk
    2. How can I repartition it?

Recover your information before attempting a repartition: http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689 There is always a risk of data loss when partitioning.

    Hi Jeffrey,
yes, you can do that with utilities such as Volume Works or iPartition. Make sure you have a complete backup before you start!!!

is it possible to repartition after i have
    already partitioned. thank you.
I would simply start from scratch. Rerun the Bootcamp assistant and remove the XP partition, then rerun Bootcamp assistant and make the partition of the correct size. If you have any essential files already on the XP side of the partition simply back them up, the OSX side of partition is preserved when using Bootcamp assistant to remove XP from HD.

  • Help with repartitioning an external hard drive

I am sorry that this is probably such a simple question, but I am a novice and I am stumped in Northern Thailand.
I have an external hard drive (500g) that I have partitioned way back into 3 - one for my IMac 1 for a Macbook Pro and the other for a MacBook.
The hard drive is always connected via USB to the IMac and only connected with the laptops on oonce in a while.
Anyway my problem is that I am getting a message on my IMac everytime TM tries to backup that there is not enough room - so i wanted to repartition the hard drive since I have allocated too much to the laptops. When I am in the TM preferences and I go to "Change Disk" and click on "Set up Time Capsule" it defaults to the AirPort Utility and looks for an "Apple Wireless Device", of course my external hard drive is not on of them - so I am stuck.
If you do not want to waste the time of others on this discussion board you could email directly.
    Thanks in advance
    <Edited by Host>

if the drive is connected directly to the imac you have to reformat it using disk utility, not airport utility.
to format a drive you open disk utility. select the whole drive (model, not name) and click on the partition tab. set the number of partitions to 1 (or whatever), click on options and set the partition scheme to GUID. set the format to mac os extended journaled (that's the default) and click "apply". note that this operation will completely wipe the drive. is this acceptable? depending on how your partitions are set up you may be able to delete one partition and increase the TM partition without erasing the data on the TM partition.

  • Repartition portable hard drive without erasing contents

    Hey all,
So recently I accidentally formatted my portable hard drive but luckily I was able to get my files back thanks to this incredibly useful free software called TestDisk (figured I'd give it a plug lol). Anyway, I don't think I recovered the data properly because now my portable hard drive has only one partition which is in Fat32 format. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew a way to repartition my hard drive so that I could leave the existing partition but create another one without having to format the whole thing.
    Thanks heaps,
    djnush

How is the drive partitioned currently - GUID or APM? It is possible to create a second partition without completely erasing the drive, but it depends on how the drive is currently partitioned. And, you need to be running 10.5.8 in order to do it on a GUID partitioned drive. However, if the drive is currently partitioned using MBR or APM, then you cannot do it on the fly. You would have to repartition the entire drive thus erasing any data on the drive.

  • Low disk space (Boot Camp) - can I repartition my hard drive?

    Hi there -
I am a MacBook user through and through.  However, I partitioned my hard drive 3 years ago using Boot Camp to do some light Windows-only work.  I only partitioned 8 GB to Windows, which wasn't a problem til now.  I'm now trying to use some Windows-only software again, but am faced with a "low disk space" message.  I cleaned up as much as I could with 8 GB, but it's still not enough.  Can I re-partition the hard drive to more like 20 GB without losing any of the data and/or installed software (I don't have access to the install disks...)?  I tried to install WinClone but I have OSX 10.5.8, and it said it only runs on 10.6 or 10.7.  Can anyone offer advice on an option to re-partition with Boot Camp, without losing the installed software and files/data?
I have a MacBook running OS 10.5.8 with 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (I know, it's old!!!)
    Thanks

  • Repartitioning an external hard drive

    Hi Everyone,
I have an external hard drive, which I had intended to set up with two partitions, one for my Mac and the other for a Sony Vaio with ME. But, I never use my Sony, I backed up everything on it on CD's, and I'd rather have that space available to back up my Mac. If I go into Disk Utilities and drag the bar down to the bottom, will it only format the part of the disk that's not formatted, or will it reformat the entire disk (thereby losing the data already on it)? The second partition of my HD is not formatted, because I never used it with my Sony.
    Thanks,
    Lizzy
    Blueberry I-Book   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Hi Lizzy
What you are proposing can't be done in Disk Utility. Whilst there are third party applications that can combine two partitions into one without losing data, they are not available for 10.2. So as far as I can tell your only recourse is to copy all the data from your first partition back to your internal drive, assuming there is room for it.
Check that these files work, songs play, photos appear etc., then using Disk Utility reformat the external disk as one volume.
If you are not wanting to use the Sony Vaio and wish to have the external disk used exclusively by your Mac, then choose the format type as HFS+ which means it won't be seen by the Sony, so be clear about your intended use of the reformatted disk.
If you have any questions, please post back.

  • HT1284 Do I need to reformat my external hard drive before I backup to it?  It shows very little free space when in fact it is empty.

I am new to Imac.  I want to use an external hard drive to backup to but the drive shows very little free space when in fact it is empty.  Do I need to reformat it and, if so How?  Thanks

    What is the external disk?
Is it new?  If so, maybe it has a Windows file system on it (FAT, exFAT, or NTFS).  If so then reformat to "HFS+ Journaled".
What backup utility are you using?  TimeMachine, Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, etc...?  If the external is suppose to be bootable because you are using a cloning backup (CCC or SuperDuper), then it is also important that the disk partition table be GUID.
You can find out this information via Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility, select the disk (not volume on the disk) and the partition time will be shown at the botton of the window.   Now Select the volume and it will tell you how the file system on the disk is formatted.
Also do you want to leave room for a recovery partition on the external disk?  Then repartition it with a small (2GB) partition that can hold a bootable recovery partition that you can setup via the Apple "Recovery Disk Assistant" which can be downloaded from Apple.
