Repeated OS panic following insertion of headphone
I have a MacBook running Mac OS 10.4.11. I have been getting repeated OS crashes after inserting the headphone into the MacBook. (I'm using the headphone which came with my iPhone.)
After I insert the headphone, or soon after, the system freezes and a message appears in several languages instructing me to restart the computer. I have attached the panic log at the end of this message. It contains the log of all such crashes.
Does anyone know what is behind these crashes? I think I started getting the crashes around the time I created new accounts on the MacBooks and started switching back and forth between them.
Thanks,
Neil

Sounds like a hardware error to me. I had similar problems with my optical drive.
I highly recommend bringing the laptop into the apple store for repair (you can sign up for a free genius bar appointment at apple.com/retail)
If the laptop is under warranty, they'll fix it for free, if not... they'll give you a price at least. =)

24" iMac repeatedly kernel panics when idle
I have recently been struck by repeated kernel panics on my 24" iMac. Until a few days ago, this happened when I woke it from sleep. Running Applejack showed up a corrupt Kensington MouseWorks pref file and removing that seems to have solved that problem. Now, however, I frequently come back to my iMac to find it kernel panicked. In other words, it panics without me doing anything. A recent example from panic.log is copied below. Is there an obvious fix? I have repaired permissions and checked memory. Thanks!

First, if your iMac has any third-party RAM, rather than the original Apple RAM, then I'd suggest that is the likely suspect. If so, that may not necessarily be shown in the results of the Apple Hardware Test. Best test of third party RAM is to remove it and replace with only the original Apple RAM, and see what the results of that are.
I don't know how or if Remy resolved his, but based on your above comment, I'd suggest you try the SMC reset, found here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
If that doesn't resolve, I'd also try a PRAM reset.
To reset the PRAM:
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following four keys on the keyboard: Command (Apple logo), option, P, and R. You will need to hold these four keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Start up the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination after the startup chord sounds, but before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold all four keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup chord for the second time.
6. Release the keys.
If that wouldn't help, then I suppose you'll have to proceed through the links in my above post. -
24" 3.06ghz iMac repeatable kernal panics
Hi folks,
I'm seeing repeated kernel panics on my brand new 24" 3.06gz iMac (w/Nvidia 8800) system. Flash seems to be the culprate, particularly flash with video. The following URL will repeatedly cause the system to kernel panic. The URL is from the pre-school section on Disney's website. This problem doesn't happen on any of my other systems (20" iMac - 2006 / MacBook / G4 iMac / etc). Note, my new iMac is up to date on all patches.
http://home.disney.go.com/foryou/preschool/
Does anyone else have the same issue? Typically it will kernel panic within 5 seconds of loading the page, if not while it is loading the page.I figured it out. The kernel panics always involved com.apple.kext.webfilter. The user account was not an admin, and I had setup parental controls so that the dock items could not be changed.. Disabling parental controls solved the problem. For some reason, even though the web filtering was not setup on this account, the kernel module was loaded and was parsing all URLs. All of the issues I've had around web/flash related safari crashed & kernel panics went away as soon as I disabled parental controls.
It is unfortunate that I had to do this on the account owned by a 4 year old. -
Repeated kernel panic (seems related to ipw2200)
Since a few months I have been experiencing repeated kernel panics at seemingly random times (the system boots up fine).
Below is an example of the panic screen that shows up, it seems related to the network driver ipw2200.
What I have done so far:
- I have set my router not to use N mode (only B and G) since the adapter does not support N, this did not resolve the situation.
- I have run memtest86+ with no error messages.
- I have reinstalled the kernel, to no avail
- I have reinstalled grub, although I don't think that could be the problem, since bootup is fine.
Here is one of the panic screens that appears:

Any ideas how to resolve or further troubleshoot this?graysky wrote:Is that driver included with the kernel package? If so, how about running mainline from the AUR as a test.
I am using the standard linux kernel from the official repositories. The ipw2200 driver is included, but requires the ipw2200-fw firmware.
While creating the package for the mainline kernel, the ipw2200 driver also shows up, doesn't that mean that it is also included in that kernel?
Would it still be useful to test this kernel in that case? I'll try it anyway, I am making the package after booting from a 2011 archlinux CD,
after which I have not yet had a kernel panic occur.
Additional note: turning the wireless network adapter off completely still gives the same kernel panic at seemingly random intervals (from minutes to hours after boot)
Also the computer seems to heat up sometimes, the following message appears: temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled.
The kernel panic also appeared a few times while I was monitoring the temperature, which was at normal levels at those times.
Any more ideas? -
texmate and git 1.8.4.2 won't work on OS X Mavericks. I've downloaded them repeatedly and the following errors display "Textmate is damaged and can't be opened" and Git states "can't be opened because it's from an unidentified developer". Please help!
MedlockDustin,
for TextMate, you’ll need to download TextMate 2.0 alpha, since earlier versions of TextMate aren’t supported on Mavericks. The file will be named “nightly”; save it to your desktop. Once the “nightly” file has finished downloading, rename it to “TextMate.app.tar.bz2” — that will give it the “BZ” icon on your desktop. Once it’s been renamed, you can double-click on it, and TextMate.app will appear on your desktop. Use your administrative login to move TextMate.app to your Applications folder.
Regarding the “unidentified developer” message displayed by trying to open git 1.8.4.2, please refer to this Apple page for the workaround. -
My wife's laptop is having repeat Kernel panics while using Safari. I don't have a recent message to display the info, but I've read this may be a memory issue. Other thoughts before I take it in to Apple?
As you mentioned a frequent cause of KP's is RAM related. These are fairly easy to troubleshoot by yourself if you want to. The causes can be:
• Faulty RAM
• RAM not seated
• Incorrect RAM
I'm assuming if you are using the original RAM that came with the computer it's not Incorrect RAM, however if you have upgraded it that's the first thing I'd look at.
You mention this occurs when she is using Safari, Safari is a very stable product however all browsers tend to be RAM hogs, the longer they are left on and the more tabs or windows open the more RAM they use. Run Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and you can get a fair idea how RAM and % CPU is being used.
That is where I'd start. In addition here are some very useful articles on trouble shooting Kernel Panics:

I have a problem that only happens when I am connected wirelessly in my home.
I am having repeated kernel panic crashes and can not figure out why. When I am at the office with this MacBook Pro i have no problem but recently this problem started here at home and I can not figure out why. Sometimes I can use the internet for an hour or so with out any problem and sometimes it happens repeatedly over and over within a few minute period between episodes.
Below is a copy of what is in my panic.log file. Any help out there as to what it would be?

I've read a couple of places that there might be a bug in 10.4.10's networking code that can cause kernel panics when using the wireless. One person though it had to do with power saving, since his only panicked when he was using the battery. If he always used the power adapter to plug into the wall, he was fine.
Another was able to get the panics to stop by changing the default channel for his network. One of the people affected by this claimed Apple was aware of it and was working on a fix, but I have no idea if that's true or not.
I'd guess you probably use an ethernet cable at work (maybe the AC adapter, too), which is why you don't have any problems there. If your home network is set up to use ethernet, too, you might try that and see if it helps...

Voice control opens when I insert the headphone jack
It's really strange... when I insert my headphone jack into the iphone, if I push it in part of the way (maybe 2/3 of the way) and then push it in the final way and the Voice Control comes on. Unfortunately nothing plays through the headphones.
A few days later, I'll try it again and it works fine.
anyone else have this issue??If you push the plug in part way and stop, you may be shorting out a couple of the conductive rings against the shell of the jack. This is the same thing that would happen normally if you pressed the button on the headset. The iPhone interprets it as a push-and-hold of the button and brings up Voice Control as if you had requested it.
The failure of the earphones to function may be a separate issue.

whenever i insert a headphone in my ipad 2 only one speaker comes
Have you tried another headset?
Do you have a case on your iPad that is preventing the jack from being pushed all the way in? (Try it without the case).
If not to all of these you have a damaged headphone jack and you will have to get it fixed. -
Intel HD3000 repeated kernel panics
I'm writing some software (an open-source microscope control system) that uses OpenGL, and I'm getting repeated kernel panics whenever I make even a minor mistake. That is, OpenGL is functional, but if I do something slightly wrong then my computer crashes. This makes debugging absurdly painful, as you can probably imagine.
The panic report log (pasted below) clearly implicates the HD3000 driver. My question is, what can I do about this? The program should crash if I do something wrong, absolutely, but it shouldn't take the computer with it. This is ruining my ability to get work done.
I suppose it's remotely possible that the card is at fault, but I was able to play a 3D game without any difficulty so I doubt that.
I'm running OSX 10.7.4 and Software Update says I'm fully up-to-date. Would it be possible to downgrade my graphics card drivers? Perhaps a previous version is more stable.

Repeated kernel panics after installing Mavericks
I'm geting repeated kernel attacks and having a hard time isolating the issue. Sometimes, I won't be able to be on the computer for 5 minutes, and other times, it works for hours, but it's been repeated. Could you help me point out what the problem is? The error log is as follows:

Thunderbolt Bus:I didn't see anything there that was specifically for Mavericks, but I did a clean install. And I'm still getting the sudden blackout followed by the prompt to restart. It seems to happen the most when I'm using iPhoto or otherwise dealing with photos, but it also happens when I'm just checking email on Chrome.

Kernel Panic Followed by Selective Application Crashes
I recently encountered a problem with my 15-inch MacBook Pro that I have not been able to solve. I was attempting to log-in to a university wireless network as a guest (University of Virginia) with the help of local staff. I turned on Aiport, located the network, and connected briefly (4-5 seconds). This was followed by a rapid disconnect/connect fluttering that produced the following series of messages on the system.log:
Mar 3 15:58:00 david-gants-computer mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface en1 (FE80:0000:0000:0000:0217:F2FF:FE44:0F44); delaying packets by 5 seconds

etc.....
We tried turning Aiport off, then on, but the same phenomenon occured. At this point I experienced a kernel panic:

When this happened, I was also running MS Word and two small utilities (Space, for multiple desktops, and smcFanControl). None of these apps had caused problems before.
When I rebooted, things appeared to run smoothly. The OS loads without a hiccup and I can't see any error messages in the system log. However, from this point on I have not been able to load any MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Entourage, etc.), Internet Explorer, or Mozilla/Firefox. They initiate for a few seconds, but then crash. Other apps still load smoothly, including fairly cpu-intensive ones such as Acrobat Professional 6.0 and the oXygen XML editor, as well as the Safari browser. Cold reboots don't make any difference at all.
I suspected Airport might be the problem, but it works fine on all other networks I to which I subsequently connected--only the UVa net continued producing the repeated transition phenonenon.
I also ran memtest with no problems detected.
Has anyone seen a similar problem or have thoughts on how to un-lobotomize my machine?
Thanks in advance.

Macbook has repeated kernel panics and freezes
Hi,
My macbook has worked quite normally up until this point. I have a macbook from late 2009/early 2010. 2 nights ago the only change I made was update the shockwave on google chrome. The following day it froze, i restarted it and then a bunch of text in the background came up and said i needed to restart ( I had my first kernel panic). I researched this found out what they were and have tried everything from single boot to safe boot but what often happens is it will freeze during the apple loading screen (havent got to log in scren) or have a kernel panic. If I let it rest for a few hours it will let me log in for upmost 10m not enough time to software update or run a disk utility I think. Sometimes when trying to turn it on I'll get three repeated beeps or one time I had a terrible noise like broken speakers or something? I have tried resetting the PRAM but not quite sure it worked... also I have a intel based mac. Any help would be great I have alot of work saved to this macbook and I have assignments which need to be completed.

Repeated Kernal Panic - please help
Hi,
I have over the past month or so experienced repeated crashes of my MBP.
I have done the following prior to this process:
Upgraded from OS Lion to OS X 10.9.1
Purchased and installed Final Cut Pro
The system and apps are all updated.
Mostly used applications are:
Adobe Lightroom v4
Final Cut Pro
Microsoft Word
Firefox
Safari
iTunes
I really hope you can help me pinpoint the issues here.
Thanks in advance
/Stephen Odgaard
