Kernel Panic Followed by Selective Application Crashes
I recently encountered a problem with my 15-inch MacBook Pro that I have not been able to solve. I was attempting to log-in to a university wireless network as a guest (University of Virginia) with the help of local staff. I turned on Aiport, located the network, and connected briefly (4-5 seconds). This was followed by a rapid disconnect/connect fluttering that produced the following series of messages on the system.log:
Mar 3 15:58:00 david-gants-computer mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface en1 (FE80:0000:0000:0000:0217:F2FF:FE44:0F44); delaying packets by 5 seconds

etc.....
We tried turning Aiport off, then on, but the same phenomenon occured. At this point I experienced a kernel panic:

When this happened, I was also running MS Word and two small utilities (Space, for multiple desktops, and smcFanControl). None of these apps had caused problems before.
When I rebooted, things appeared to run smoothly. The OS loads without a hiccup and I can't see any error messages in the system log. However, from this point on I have not been able to load any MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Entourage, etc.), Internet Explorer, or Mozilla/Firefox. They initiate for a few seconds, but then crash. Other apps still load smoothly, including fairly cpu-intensive ones such as Acrobat Professional 6.0 and the oXygen XML editor, as well as the Safari browser. Cold reboots don't make any difference at all.
I suspected Airport might be the problem, but it works fine on all other networks I to which I subsequently connected--only the UVa net continued producing the repeated transition phenonenon.
I also ran memtest with no problems detected.
Has anyone seen a similar problem or have thoughts on how to un-lobotomize my machine?
Thanks in advance.

First off, here is my kernel panic FAQ*:
http://www.macmaps.com/kernelpanic.html
Good books including Mac OS X Tiger: The Missing Manual and The Little Mac Book: Tiger Edition by Robin Williams (not the actor!). Both these authors have great books regarding Mac OS X and other parts of Mac OS X.

Hi, this is driving me mad, any help in identifying a fix would be so great!
I seem to get this all the time since i upgraded to OS X Lion, am now on Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) and the problem is persisting - my PC hard ware is: 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, the Mac has 4GB of memory (667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM), it is using a ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB Graphics card.
The result is a kernel panic, leading to the system crashing and waiting for a remote debugger connection. I have attached the report below.
I should mention that post the Iion upgrade, i have taken my PC to the Genius bar and they have re-installed the OS - however it has not fixed the problem, despite the mac guys thinking it had.
Thanks,
Richard

com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily 1.4I don't see any obvious causes in your crash log so my guess is it's hardware. The most common item is RAM which could be:
1. Incorrect RAM (did you upgrade recently?)
2. Failed RAM, yes it does fail!
3. Unseated RAM, remove it and reseat firmly.
To test for RAM I'd recommend downloading Rember from:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15837/rember
I would also recommend studying Kernel Panics, Tutorial: Avoiding and eliminating Kernel panics & About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages.
Good luck locating it. -
Kernel panic, followed by boot freeze?
I have a Mid 2012 rMBP. I recently installed OS X 10.10.3 and started noticing I had some issues with certain applications. No big deal, I just had to restart two or three times per day. Last night I had several successive kernel panics on boot up, caused by launchd. After booting into recovering, Disk Utility said my disk was fine, so I went ahead and selected the Reinstall OS X option. The first time I did this, it got all the way to the end of the install, and then told me it wasn't successful due to an unknown error with BSD.pkg. So I tried the reinstall again, this time it succeeded. However, now, I can't login! After inputting my password, the Mac either black screens and restarts, or the loading bar appears underneath the password field, it gets maybe 1/8 of the way, and then it stops. The cursor appears, but even after 45 minutes, the bar did not move any further. Anything I can do to try to fix this before I take it to the Apple Store tomorrow?
Can you boot into Safe Mode or do you have another Mac?

My MBP is Kernel Panicing, and I see the Crash Report is at 107% CPU
My fans are spinning quickly, and the whole thing sounds like a Jet Plane, even when no programs are open. I have been to the Genius bar 3 times this week.
They keep looking at it, doing disk checks, repairing permissions, then I left it with them for 3 days. They ran "diagnostic tests", but still came back with nothing.
They finally agreed to wipe my Hard Drive. Since I got it back Friday night, I had one more kernel panic, and I've managed to update Mountain Lion...but the Crash Report thing is still going on.
It's pretty obvious that the Genius bar here in London doesn't have a clue how to fix this, so what should I do?Here's the one from last night.

"You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) when i quit applications
When i quit applications i often get the kernel panic message. I suspect that the problem is related to my M-box 2 mini. It happens if i have unplugged the M-box while my MBP is on, and then quit an application (f.eks Logic or Safari).
Is someone having the same problem? And what can i do to fix this?Don't unplug the M-box while your MBP is on.

Kernel Panic on opening Mail application
When I try to open the Mail application I get this message
The mailbox “~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Outbox.mbox” is currently locked by “(null)” on host “<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>”. If you open a mailbox that already is in use, you may damage its contents.
And it give me three options
1) Open read only 2) Quit 3) Open Anyway
When I click on either "Open read only" or "Open Anyway" I get a Kernel Panic and I have to restart the computer.
Any help will be appreciatedAppears that you have some file system corruption. DiskWarrior by Alsoft will probably fix the problem.
http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html
However, most kernal panics are related to hardware problems. Can you isolate to a hardware device?
Issues with a hardware device can sometimes appear to be software issues, but are not resolved with software troubleshooting. Eliminate hardware as a cause (or conversely, isolate the issue to software):
1. Disconnect external devices. If the computer is an iBook or PowerBook computer, disconnect all external devices. For an iMac, disconnect all devices other than the Apple keyboard and mouse. For a Power Mac, disconnect all external devices other than one display (which should be connected to an original, built-in video port), and the original Apple keyboard and mouse. If this resolves the issue, add devices back one at a time (shut down first if the device requires it) to further isolate the issue.
2. Insert the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with your computer (if one did). Use the extended test. If any issues are found proceed to step 3, or contact AppleCare or your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider to arrange for diagnostics and service as necessary.
3. Shut down the computer and remove any third-party memory upgrades, expansion cards, additional hard drives, or other internal hardware upgrades. If you are not comfortable doing this, an Apple Authorized Service provider can assist. A service fee may be charged if the issue is not related to your Apple hardware. Alternatively, you may wish to skip this step and go to "Reinstall Mac OS X" below.
* If the issue is resolved, add your devices back one at a time. When the issue returns, remove the most recently-added device. If the issue goes away again, you have identified the cause. If software was included with the device, try deleting and reinstalling it. You may also wish to contact the vendor or manufacturer of that device for specific troubleshooting steps.
* You may want to test devices on all available ports into which they can be used. If a USB device works on USB port 1 but not on USB port 2, try connecting other devices to port 2. It is possible that your computer's ports aren't working properly.

Kernel panics following wakeups using Leopard
I had been encountering routine system crashes (kernel panics) after waking my G5 from sleep mode. In an effort to isolate a possible cause, I changed USB hubs, disconnected external hard drives, and so on. What seems to have been the source (fingers crossed) of the panics was the D-Link DBT-120 Bluetooth dongle (USB). After removing that, I've had no further crashes (again, fingers crossed).
I'm curious if others have experienced the same or similar problems. In another post I wrote
I have been in discussions with Apple Support for the last 6 weeks with ongoing kernel panic problems. We narrowed these down to LCC and it's accompanying files. LCC is LOgitech Control Centre which is installed to control the mouse gear wheel etc on the MX Revolution and others.
The Mac does one of two things.
In 10.4.10 and Leopard 10.5.1 the mouse constantly freezes on the screen, the keyboard still works and all apps can be quit and work saved. Checking activity monitor shows the Logitech software in red, all with problems. On logging out, the mac freezes. A forced restart with the poer button is the only way of restarting.
In Leopard 10.5.1 the Mac also constantly has Kernel Panics on wake up from periods of sleep. These can be just 2 minute periods or 2 hour periods, it's random.
If a Mac is woken from sleep and it enters a Kernel Panic, shortly afterwards a the fans rev to full throttle. This could potentially be a risk in a studio with several macs left on sleep for the night. Especially if someone caught the mouse on a Mac on the way out one night....would they get hot revving all night? Logitech should seriously look into this problem as it appears from all our tests that it is definately their software causing the problems.
We have tried upgrading to the latest 2.4 LCC software, still the kernel panics and mouse freezes continue.
If I remove the USB dongle before the computer sleeps it doesn't have kernel panics. However this is not practical and it still doesn't help the freezing issue.
Apple support have been fantastic in helping us with this problem, but the underlying cause lies with Logitech. Once again, we have a fantastic product and amateur software from Logitech. -
Kernel panic-please help me decipher crash report
I recently experienced a kernel panic on my MacBook Pro (OS X version 10.9.5). Can anybody help me decipher what caused it and whether there's anything I could do to prevent future occurrences? Thanks in advance.

com.apple.kec.pthread 1Hi Eric,
Thank you for your reply. In the meanwhile, I did some research on kernel panics, and I figured the VirtualBox kernel extensions would be the obvious suspects. I find it odd, though, given that I wasn't running the VirtualBox app itself. To be sure, I just upgraded VirtualBox.
At any rate, let me explain in a little bit more detail the circumstances of the panic. I had had a Wolfram Mathematica notebook open for quite some time. The crash itself happened while I was browsing a pdf document in Google Chrome. After the panic, OS X automatically restarted and it could restore all windows and apps that were open before the panic, but something weird was happening: both Finder was unresponsive and I didn't have WiFi connection. I also noticed that Mathematica had 7 or 8 grayed-out, unresponsive windows open with the “hourglass” icon superimposed on each of them (not the beach ball, but the icon you usually see under the Apple logo upon startup), instead of the 2 and 3 windows Mathematica had open before the crash (notebook, message panel, and a toolbar). Once I force-quit Mathematica, Finder immediately became responsive again and the WiFi connection resumed.
Based on this weird experience, I have three—admittedly non-expert—hypotheses about what caused the panic:
1. Mathematica exhibited some idiosyncratic, one-time behavior that somehow caused a systemic failure. Perhaps some pathological interaction with the VirtualBox extensions?
2. RAM problems: five months ago, I upgraded the manufacturer-provided 2x2 GB RAM slots to 2x4 GB RAM slots I bought on Amazon (the model had very good reviews) after double-checking it would work with my MBP. Up until today the new RAM seemed to be working properly.
3. Other hardware problems: my MBP is not young (it's an early 2011 model that I bought more than 3.5 years ago), and there may be some mysterious HDD or other hardware failure that began to take its toll.
Given that I had never had kernel panics before and the horror stories I read about their frequent recurrences once they start, it would be very helpful for me to know what was the likely explanation for this panic and what steps I can make to prevent future occurrences. Do you think the description above points to a more definitive cause?
Thank you very much for your advice. -
Ipad3 showing kernel panic messages and ios is crashing down frequently.
I am using ipad3. My ios is crushing down frequently since upgraded to ios 7.04. For the couple of occasions I saw kernel panic messages. I have restored iOS plenty of times but still facing the problem. This issue makes it impossible to use this device now. I am really fade up. I am seeking sincere and Cordial help of the technical bosses !
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Step by Step to fix your Mac
Most commonly used backup methods -
Start Up disk problem following kernel panic-mounts but not as a boot drive
I have a problem that I can't solve.
Dual processor G4 with 3 hard drive, all of which are bootable drives with 10.4.7 installed:
A- my primary boot drive - internal SCSI drive (Adaptec PowerDomain 2930U PCI card);
B - internal hard drive that came with the G4; and
C - external Firewire hard drive
Recently, I booted into my B drive and it locked up after it went into sleep mode. On reboot, I experienced a number of kernel panic messages, prompting me to restart my computer.
PROBLEM: Since that time, I have not been able to get my A drive to once again be the Startup Disk.
Diagnostic steps that I have performed:
i. I have run and re-run Disk Warrior from a bootable CD and the A drive as well as the other 2 hard drives mount and are "repaired" by DiskWarrior.
ii. TechTools Pro shows no hardware problems and whatever glitches it has found were repaired.
iii. Disk Utilities consistently returns "Volume passed verification."
iv. Zapped the PRAM
The A drive does mount and is accessible whenever either the B drive or the C drive is the bootable drive.
System Preferences/Startup Disk lists the A drive as a candidate whenever either the B drive or the C drive is the bootable drive. However, when the A drive is selected in System Preferences, on reboot, it doesn't become the boot drive.
I have tried to restart and hold the "C" key down so that I might possibly be able to select the boot drive from A, B or C. But the C key method doesn't produce the intended result, only reverting back to the boot drive in power prior to the reboot. That occurs whether the boot drive is B or C.
At that stage, rightfully or wrongfully, since the problem persisted whether the B or C drives were the startup disk I concluded that the problem could be hardware related and not software related.
On one of the reboots following the kernel panics, a Crash Report was produced - the verbiage
which is code related and so far above my knowledge and experience that it is incomprehensible to me. I can post it separately if helpful but it won't fit in this email message due to restrictions on length of messages.
I haven't had a kernel panic following any of the last 50+ restarts that have accompanied my attempted diagnostics.
Finally, I ran the Apple Hardware Test, version 1.2.6, that came with my G4. First, I removed all peripherals except the monitor, keyboard and mouse (plugged into the keyboard), the Adaptec SCSI card, and a 3rd party FW/USB2 PCI card (OrangeLink+). I ran the Extended Test and an error code was generated during the logic board test: Error Code fire/5/2
That gave me some hope. I next removed the 3rd party FW/USB2 PCI card (OrangeLink+) and re-ran the Apple Hardware Test and no error were reported. Both the logic board and memory passed. I ran the extended test twice, each time no error.
Ah, did that solve my problem? I rebooted and I still cannot get my A drive to be the Startup Disk.
Next, I ran the Rember software (a GUI app for Memtest) and the RAM checked out as fine.
At this stage I don't have a clue. The white towel is about to be waved.
If the problem is the Adaptec SCSI card, I don't know how to test it since it obviously has to be installed to enable drive A to mount.
Does anyone have any suggestions?I am the original poster on this thread.
Turns out that the culprit behind all my boot problems was the battery on my 5 year old Quicksilver G4. Replaced the battery and all is back to normal.
FWIW, for any Quicksilver owners with SCSI cards, be aware that you can create boot problems for your SCSI drive by zapping your PRAM. As part of my diagnostics I did zap the PRAM but that turned out not to be a problem.
Adaptec's site does include a workaround should you have problems after zapping the PRAM. This specifically covers the PowerDomain 29160 SCSI card/2930U card, which I have. -
Envy 110 D411a causes kernel panic that crashes MacBook Pro
I posted this 10 months ago, with no response.
My Model D411a Envy 110 (PN: CQ809A SN: CN264C228R05QR) is on an AT&T gateway/router. We have a 13" MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.5, a 13" MacBook Air running 10.8.5 and an iPad also on the same network.
Often, when I try to print a page from the internet from the MB Pro to the Envy 110, it causes a kernel panic on the Mac that crashes it, requiring a lengthy re-boot. The display shows a big black box with the message that I have to re-start the Mac, starting with a complete re-boot - printed in several languages. This does not always happen, but often enough to be a major problem. It has not happened with the MB Air or iPad.
I have an identical printer in Florida that has not had this problem, as far as I can recall. The gateway/router there is from Century Link.
An Apple "Genius Bar" guy suggested this is caused by HP using kernel extensions in its software, which no other printer manufacturers use. I now own six HP printers. I have had some problems keeping three of them going with the AT&T set-up and the same computers, plus a pre-Intel Mac Mini. The oldest of the printers is an HP LaserJet 4ML, which is so old it has a long white beard — but still runs. I hate just to abandon HP Printers, and the Envy is the best physical fit both here and in our Florida RV, but having it crash my laptop (most used) as much as half the time I try to print from the net makes it a problem rather than a solution.
I can't even find a reference to "kernel" much less "kernel panic" in any of the forums here, which adds to the feeling that no one knows what I'm even talking about.
If anyone out there has any advice to offer, I'd really appreciate it before I have to toss the printer and find one from another manufacturer.
Thanks in advance,
DanteHi Dante,
From the post i understand that you are having issue with the MacBook Pro(Lion) with Envy 110.
Can you help me understand what all other printers have been installed on the same MacBook
We can try to uninstall the printer using scrubber/Reset the printing system and reinstall the printer with the software available on Web. (ENVY-110-series_v12.14.0.dmg).
Note: Performing this step will delete all the printer from the MacBook, and should be reinstalled.
Use Scrubber Uninstallation:
Go to Applications>Hewlett-Packard , Press and Hold the "CTRL", "ALT","CMD" simultaneously click on Uninstall.
Reset Printing System:
1.Open Print and Scan from System Preferences
2.CTRL Click or Right Click on the Printer box on the Left side and Choose " Reset Printing System"
3. Click OK
Do Repair Disk Permission
1. Open Applicaion Folder>>Utilities>>Disk Utility.
2. Sele t the hard drive containing the boot volume.
3. Go to First Aid Tab and select Reprir Disk Permission.
Download and run the driver from web and add the printer to queue.
See if it helps.
Thanks
Mineesh

Frequent kernel panics/crashes on mid-2012 13" MBP
For several months I've been experiencing frequent kernel panics on my MBP. It can occur at anytime and is seemingly random. Sometimes I get green lines on the screen when it freezes, before it reboots itself or I am forced to do it myself.
The MBP is the 13" mid-2012 model (Yosemite 10.10.3)
2.9Ghz Intel Core i7
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
I've already taken the MBP to the Genius bar recently, and they completely reinstalled Yosemite for me, wiping everything off it and starting from scratch. For a day or so it was fine, before the problems started occurring again.
Sometimes when it's rebooting, it fails during this and reboots all over again.
I've been reading the forums for a while, looking for people who have similar issues, and so I've already got the log here through Terminal, hopefully this helps in identifying my problem(s):

Seemingly random kernel panics and crashes
Hi,
I am having some fairly severe problems with my dual 2GHZ G5 powermac. It randomly freezes (display locks up, completely unresponsive) requiring a hard restart by holding the power button. In these cases it appears no logs are written as well. Occasionally it also kernel panics. Both of these crashes happen at random, whether the computer is idle or busy. The panic log for the last kernel panic is pasted below:
Wed Feb 14 12:23:15 2007

Can anyone help me interpret it?
I am at a loss here and have tried all manner of solutions:
fsck
resetting PRAM (though I get command not found when trying to run reset-nvram from OF!)
various disk utilities
complete reformat and erase on both my internal disks and a compete erase and install of 10.4
Can anyone help?
ThanksThanks all for the help,
It transpired that I was trying to reset-nvram etc in Single user mode rather than OF (doh!) so have solved that one.
All the same, I'm not sure it was necessary. I ran AHT and it reported the following error:
2MEM/2/4: DIMM0/J11
I removed the offending DIMM (and pair) and reran the extended test. It reported no problems and here I am typing away after a reboot with no crash...yet..... so this may have been it.
Does anyone know what this error message meant, other than just 'bad RAM' as this dimm was the 256 OEM module my machine came pre-installed with and that has been working fine for 2 years plus. I can't think of any reason why it might have gone wrong, it was correctly seated in the socket and I hadn't opened up my machine in ages.
Also, could a RAM issue have been the cause of the above kernel panic? -
Safari, Firefox or Chrome are always crashing + kernel panics
Hello everyone,
I come back (again) to you because i'm having problems with my MacBook Pro.
Few days ago my computer starting to sound an alarm... I was forced to shut it down manually.
But now, I can't even browse the internet -> Safari, Chrome or Firefox are always crashing (the report in console mentions something about WebProcess but I can't figure how to fix it). This thing happens every 2 minutes when browsing...
Also, when looking at console I saw that I had lots of reports concerning mds_DATE_USER.crash
The Macbook Pro is also sometime restarting himself & i get the y message in grey in all languages "Your comp. restarted because... blablabla" -> Console says Kernel Panic...
Do you have any idea on idea on this problems (maybe related ?)
Thanks a lot !Hello Linc,
I do not know what are "shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports." ? So I supposed you asked me to send the kernel panic report and not "mds_ .crash" "report_ .crash" or "web process_ .crash"...
Here it is :
