Replace Desktop

Hi guys,
I spend some months abroad only to find my place back completely empty. My G4, Display, DSR 11, monitor and a whole lot of other stuff, it is all gone. Well s**t happens, but I can tell you it is not a pretty sight.
Ok, I mainly do low budget things and do it more for the fun then the bucks, but I need to replace my desktop and a lot of other things witch for now I don't know how to find the money. So I can afford a new dual core 2Ghz or look on ebay for a 2x 1,8 or 2x 2 Ghz. The latter seems to be faster then the dual core.
I know this is of topic, but I just want some advice, please understand, I can not be calm in this situation and can't get my mind to focus.
Just don't tell me to wait for the intel, as I don't need it, my dual G4 800 served me well and I miss him.
I live in Belgium so we also don't have this 'refurbed' things.
Any ideas, advice...... thanks a lot
Johan

Wow, sorry to hear all that.
I'd say that any G5 should be able to tide you over till you get back on your feet. Personally, I'd try to spring for the dual-core (as opposed to the older dual processor) machines.
Good luck.

  • HT1152 Hi, we have just got our new replacement desktop mac with mountain lion. We had a G5 that was irreparable. Now we are looking to see where we can put in our cd's as we just popped them into the side on the G5 but no joy here !

Hi, we have just got our new replacement desktop mac mountain lion osx 10.8.2,  as the G5 was irrepairable. Now we can't find where to put our discs ?!? Have they now done away with being able to burn discs and put software discs in now and just rely on downloads ?

Have they now done away with being able to burn discs and put software discs in now and just rely on downloads ?
Yes. There is no Superdrive. You cannot play DVDs or CDs.
You will need to buy an external DVD player/burner. Almost all will do the job, just make sure you can connect it, as your iMac does not have Firewire or USB2 (USB3 is backwards compatible).
Or there is of course the expensive one from Apple.

  • Need advice about replacing desktop, with laptop?

I need to replace my old desktop. Know nothing about laptops! Would like to clear my spare room of computer desk and junk! Would a laptop serve the same purpose, as a desktop?
I'm a retired lady and mainly use my computer for email, internet surfing and some games.
I would not use for traveling.
How would I connect to my broadband? Can I plug in without relying on battery? Can I still use my printer?
In other words, can I use a laptop just as use my desktop?
    Solved!

Hi Patsy.  I am confused on why so many are trying to steer you away from the laptop when it sounds like that is just what you are wanting.  Personally, I think you would love a laptop.  Like you I don't travel all that often, but the biggest advantage of the laptop for me has nothing to with travel and everything to do with the mobility of it within my own home.  If I want to lay on the couch and play on the internet, go outside on the patio and read an article or sit in bed and play a game on the computer or watch a DVD, it is no problem.  I have had my laptop about a year now and it is hands down more convenient than the desktop in my study.
In answer to a few of your questions, yes a laptop would work with your internet in exactly the same way as the desktop, BUT you would need to purchase a wireless router in addition to the laptop.  This router is what allows you to be wireless in your home.  You can then plug in anywhere in the house or work off the laptop battery, whichever you so choose.  The printer is the same way.  You could hook the printer directly to the router or if the printer has wireless capabilities, it could be recognized by your router and be wireless too, meaning it simply needs to be plugged in and not connected to anything else and you could still send documents straight from your laptop to it.
As for computers, if you ever see a poster start talking in detail about graphics cards, more than likely they are high-end gamers.  In other words, not simple computer games but very graphic intense games that call for really good graphics cards.  From what you describe your use as, which is very similar to mine, you are just wanting it for internet/email, basic computer games and maybe some word processing abilities.  Most laptops you get today will probably have a graphic card that supports all you need.  The following is just my opinion on laptops based on needs that sound close to mine, so hopefully I won't get jumped on too much by other computer experts.  I would encourage you to avoid taking the cheapest route with a laptop.  That isn't to say avoid a good deal, just go for a good brand.  In my opinion the good brands do not include Toshiba (just personal experience based on several people who have gotten one in the last couple of years and reading up on them before buying) or Gateway (although I think they may have been purchased by Asus as was eMachine, so the quality might be better now.  They use to be crap!).  I would stick with HP or Dell myself.  I have a Dell, which again high end gamers are not as fond of because they have an integrated  graphics card.  For what you would use it for, a Dell would be more than fine, and they have been around a long time for a reason!  That is what my old desktop is too, and they have always responded to my issues, even when not under warranty anymore with that desktop.  As for what to look for, you should be able to get a decent laptop for $400-$550, maybe cheaper, but get a little more to the laptop and it will last you a little longer. I would look for something that is a Core2Duo versus simply Dual Core.  Try to go for at least 3GB memory, 4GB is better. As to the size of the hard drive, if you mainly just save pictures and documents like me a 160GB hard drive is more than enough, but if higher, even better. The huge retailer that starts with W, which apparently can't be written here, has some good deals on both HP & Dell, and they offer relatively cheap extended warranties.  Which by the way, I would highly encourage an extended warranty on a laptop.  Here are 2 other good deals I just came across on good laptops {Links removed per Community Guidelines} The 2nd deal has a bigger hard drive and a 17" screen versus a 15.6".  The bigger screen means it is going to be a little heavier though.  I originally wanted the bigger screen myself, but ended up going with the 15.6" as it was just easier to lug around.  They are so close in weight though, I don't know that it would matter that much to some.  As to hooking all this stuff up, such as configuring your router, printer etc.  If you know anyone that is good with computers it is usually a pretty simple task for them.  Most of kids in high school can do it with their eyes closed now.  If you don't know anyone, Best Buy has a service called the Geek Squad that will come and do it for you.  Have no idea the cost there, but I do know it doesn't have to be purchased at Best Buy for you to buy that service.
Anyway, I know I wrote you a book, but I hope this info help.  I really think you will be more than pleased with a laptop once you get the purchase and setup out the way anyhow!   Good luck, Leigh.

  • HT1535 Replacing desktop PC with iPad

I am replacing my desktop PC with an iPad. I'd like to transfer my iTunes library to my iPad prior to canceling my broadband connection for good. How do I do  this? Forgive the newbie question, I'm finally going 100% Apple and am very new to the iPad. Thanks!

An iPad is not a computer, it cannot replace one, and it cannot do many things a computer can do. . And unless you plan on using cellular connection fior your internet you will still need some type of internet connection for the iPad.
Anyway, you can only sync your library to your iPad, but if something should happen to the iPad getting the library out of it is not something you can easily do. And not something that is directly supported. You would need a computer and a 3rd party application to do so.  The iPad would still require a computer for any major restoration or backup.
I would in all honesty keep the computer as a backup at the very least.
The iPad as it is right now is just a large iPod in terms of general funcionality. Would you replace your computer with an iPod?

  • How can I replace desktop icon accidentally changed?

Trying to change a new folder icon I've changed the icon of desktop. I'd like to restor the old one. Can anyone help me?

The easiest way is to do it through iTunes. Connect your iPad to your computer, launch iTunes, choose your iPad under "Devices", then click on "Apps" at the top of the main window. You'll see your iPad's layout. Click on the page with the app you want to move, then drag the app to the page you want.
You can also drag the apps around on the iPad itself, but it's a little more of a pain. Hold your finger down on any app until every icon starts to shake. You can now drag and drop any icon to different locations/pages. To drag an app to another page, drag it to the far right or left of thew screen until the page switches - you'll have to do this until you get it to the page you want it on. Press the home button to get out of this mode (the icons will stop shaking).

  • I have the original cd for acrobat 8 pro.  It was installed on a previous computer that melted down.  Now I cannot get it to reinstall on my replacement desktop.

There doesn't seem to be any valid or capable help from Adobe support to fix this.  I was on a chat with a supposed Adobe tech for 50 minutes and we were still at "Hi How Are You?"  This is not what I call good customer support.  When it was obvious this person (probably offshore somewhere) was completely inept at helping me he told me that the "experts" on the adobe forum could fix this problem.  I'm not only frustrated but lack confidence this is where to get the answers I need to get this product working again.

  • Replaced desktop - ePrint stopped working

I got a new deskto PC and can't ePrint for other devices now.  I guess the ePrint communication was through the PC.  How can I set that up again?

Hi BYU2GM. Eprint communication is through the internet. Your printer must be installed wirelessly (or Ethernet) to a router that is getting the internet. What model of printer do you have?

The power supply LED flashes until the CPU is unplugged and then is a steady green.  How can I get the HDD info from this desktop to my replacement desktop?
    [Personal Information Removed]

Depends on what model/age the replacement is.Most newer machines have SATA hdd and your old machine has an IDE hdd. Best option to have access to files, etc on the hdd is to install it in a  USB Enclosure such as HERE that can be plugged into  a USB port of another machine.

  • Replacing a broken computer - help with router question ?

    Here is the situation,
I have a desktop computer that has Cisco Connect loaded and was connected to the Cisco Router E3000 via an ethernet cable.
Laptop is connected to the router wirelessly. Everything was working fine aside from having to occassionaly reboot the router when it lost it's connection with the printer.
The Dell desktop has crashed and burned. It is turned off.
The laptop is still connected to the router, which is in turn connected to the modem and I still have an internet connection.
I am setting up a new desktop which will be hardwired to the router via ethernet cable.
Do I need to reinstall Cisco Connect and run it? If so will I have to change anything in the settings or configuration?
The LAN was originally set up for me but I would very much like to do it myself because of budgetary concerns.
What do I need to do in order to set up my new/replacement desktop?
Thank you for any help .
    Fred

Well in this situation , You need to reset and reconfigure the router again with the help of the setup CD and it will install the cisco connect software again on the new desktop .
Regarding the settings , You can manage the settings by urself with the help of the cisco connect software .. If you want you can change or make the same network name and password that you had before on the router .

  • Is Nokia ready for high end market?

It is the time of smartphones.  With the introduction of 3G, distance and speed are not a barrier at all.  Prediction is that, we will see a shift from laptop to smartphones, something we experienced a few years ago when laptop replaced desktops. So, is Nokia really ready for this competitve market?  I believe they are still not ready looking at the way they support N series and E series.
My horror story started the day I purchased my N96, exactly 4 months back.   I have been watching the developments of N95 and wanted to own one.  Nokia released N96 by the time I made my decision.  The problem started when I started seeing low memory errors.  To my surprise, I noticed that Nokia uses phone memory for messages and N-gauge.  Configuring "mass memory" as the storage for messages didn't solve the problem completely as it failed to move all messagesI searched for some file explorer kind of applications to explore and clean phone memory.  I wish if Nokia had one.  The solution given to me by Nokia support was to reset the phone.  And, that cleared all data from my phone.  So, here are a list of my pain points
    - Does Nokia expect us to reset phone for every small issues.  Note that, these are not just phones, but smart phones.  More than contacts, I have my personal data, bookmarks, configurations, rss feeds, video feeds, radio stations, podcasts, GPS locations, blogging tools, applications etc. installed.  Getting back the phone in the same state will take days after a hard reset.  Do I agree if my laptop service center tells me that they have to format my harddisk everytime I take my laptop for servicing? Nokia Care's standard answer is to update the firmware (though I have the latest firmware) and reset the phone for any issues.  I only wish if Nokia trained their technicians to handle smartphones.
    - N96 reboots when I use GPS 50% of the times (when you use it for longer duration either with google map or Nokia map or sports tracker)
    - Phone hangs when you move from wifi hotspot to other places while wifi scan is going on (I don't see this issue after upgrading to 12.043)
    - There is no way to restart the phone when the phone hangs.  You have to take out the battery and put it back.
    - I get disconnected frequently when I'm on long calls.  Though I can blame my network provider, I know its not completely because of them.  My N70 doesn't have this problem.
    - I have been having a long battle with Nokia support and bluetooth issues.  I tried to use Motorola HT820 headset with this phone.  Phone hangs or reboots 90% time when I turn on the headset.  Nokia's standard answer is that Motorola HT820 is not a supported accessory.  I agree, but is it acceptable if phone reboots or hangs when I tried to use an unsupported accessory?  Only way to reboot the phone when it hangs is to remove the battery and place it back.  Why can't they give a reset switch hidden somewhere if they can't write bugfree code (and nonone can).  I have been doing this for the last one month while trying to convince Nokia that they have a problem with their bluetooth stack. I can prove that it happens only with A2DP profile.  I have been using a plantronics bluetooth headset without any problem.  I'm also using HT820 with my Nokia N70 which supports only HSP profile. Unfortunately, N96 doesn't provide an option to choose what profile you want to use when you pair a bluetooth headset.  I could have listened to music from my laptop (A2DP) while the headset is connected with phone (HSP), and I don't miss any calls.  I'm pretty sure it is a bug in their bluetooth stack; only if I could talk to one of their developers and explain the problem.
    - You know the commotion Nokia created when they removed VoIP stack from N96.  Thanks to Fring, I use VoIP and skype with N96 today.
    - The NetWork stack is so cumbursome.  Each applications have to define their own access points and rights.  Why can't it be in the platform level? Just imagin you doing this on your laptop for each of the applications.
    - Its better not to talk about the battery.  It comes for less than a day for me.  But, you can always blaim the usage.
How do we make Nokia listen to issues?  Do they have any customer feedback forum (please, not through the Nokia Care centers)?  I wish if they improve, after all, I still love my phone (Yes, I paid a good amount for this phone)

    N96, FW: 12.043

    Hi Jaimon,
I'm with you - I've had my N96 nearly six months and am VERY disappointed.
I just bought a Parrot Party Bluetooth speaker. A GREAT little unit. Needless to say, the implementation of A2DP leaves a LOT to be desired on the N96. Basically, it's like listening to a CD that skips every 10 seconds. The N96 cannot keep up the stream of data fast enough. It's VERY annoying.
I checked to make sure no other apps were running to make sure it wasn't something else running that was causing the problem, but no, it's rubbish (I have firmware 12.043). Other people in my office can connect their Blackberries etc... no problem. Plays back beautifully, but my N96? Piece of garbage.
Nokia have a LOT to answer for! Like you say, a phone that costs more than a laptop and this is the level of service we get. I have written TWICE via their online customer service form, and on each occasion received an email saying I can expect a response in 72 hours. I've never received ANYTHING!
Also, I had a Plantronics headset - Explorer 340. A nice headset. Same problems as mentioned elsewhere, would intermittently be disconnected and reconnected - very annoying. Last week, it paired but would not connect. Plantronics' support was wonderful! So efficient. They're exchanging the unit with a newer model (brand new) because they cannot replace the old model. Maybe that will work better. Meanwhile, because I NEED a headset for driving (and the supplied stereo headset is pathetic - cable too short, microphone ends up around your waist (USELESS!)) I bought (*gasp*) a Nokia BH-101. Paired fine with the N96 (as one would EXPECT), but the headset itself is lousy - such a poor design. I challenge anyone to make it fit in their ear comfortably enough as to be able to HEAR the bloody thing while driving. I have to keep one hand on it to keep it in my ear. USELESS NOKIA!
What is it WITH this company?! Why have they lost the plot?!??!

  • BT NetProtect Plus Problems

Just wondering if anyone has had problems with bt netprotect plus and found any solutions. I was a customer of McAfee for some years, I upgraded to BT Broadband Option 2 with bt netprotect plus provided by McAfee included, my original McAfee software was about to expire and I had followed the link to bt netprotect plus which appeared to download and install, during installation messages appeared telling me old files were being removed and updated, however, on the day my old McAfee expired a message appeared requesting payment to extend subscription, I contacted McAfee to inform them I was now with bt netprotect plus, I sign in under a different password to bt netprotect, however, it always defaults to my old account which is now expired with no software available, I contacted bt customer help, I was transferred to bt technical help who remotely took over 2 desktop computers in my home both have Window 7, the technician informed me bt netprotect plus was incompatible with windows 7, I did question so why are you installing software onto my computer which is incompatible, following the remote installation of bt netprotect plus, I tried to restart both computers to find I was unable to boot up both, the internal fans are running fast and loud, the DVD RW & DVD ROM drive light up, then that's it, the hardrive indicator light remain on, there is no signal to the pc monitor or any other devices (keyboard or mouse) I contacted bt for help, well they can't help me as I have nothing on my screen, I ask for help again today, it can't be the software, we're really sorry but can't offer any help, it is frustrating to have so much conflicting advice, customer service were helpful and understanding and gave me a number to contact bt technical help with the advice of asking for a supervisor, however, they are unable to offer any explanation as to why following remote access to my computers, and changing the system settings, I now have 2 computers that are now useless, the parting advice was to go to computer shop to have them repaired at my expense, the only computer working is my laptop, which was the first pc I was able to download bt netprotect plus to and is working okay, but I'm fearful that it will die to and I'll be left in the dark. I would be grateful if any other bt customers have had similar problems and found any solutions, I can't afford to right off hundreds of pounds worth of equipment, I wished I had never changed to option 2 and kept things as they were, I have never had any problems with BT, McAfee or my desktops prior to this incident.  Thanks

    Hi Stuart,
Thanks for the e-mail. I am really sorry for the problems that you have had, quite a frustrating issue I fully appreciate.
I can see that there is an open complaint on your account in which a team is actively dealing with this case. As far as I can see the last note on the complaint is that you have agreed to bring the PC in question to a Vendor to have it checked. Is that correct?
I really don't think that this issue could have been caused by the action of the advisor who took remote access control of your PC. The actions the advisor took where all at software level but the problems that you describe indicate that the power was off on the PC and monitor when you returned. I am not aware of any changes anyone could make via your operating system that would cause you to lose power to the PC components.
As I say there is a team already dealing with this issue so there is not much we can do in the mean time as too many departments dealing with this could prove very confusing. I would however be very interested to learn of the outcome of this case.. If there is anything else that I can help you with please drop me a reply.
    REPLY
Thank you for your reply, both desktop PC's had power, but were unable to boot up with no signals to peripheral devices (monitor, keyboard, mouse) if the problem was purely software, I can't understand why BT technical help did not ask the customer to download from McAfee site software removal tool before attempting to install BT NetProtect Plus, especially if the customer had been a previous customer of McAfee, maybe wise after the event, on the day the technician took control of my desktops, it was evident that system files were being accessed and deleted and following this both computers failed to restart as unable to boot up. I asked a local computer technician to look at both PC's and one is now up and running again with BT NetProtect Plus installed and working, the other desktop continues to fail to boot up, however, the technician accessed the hardrive to allow me to rescue files.
I have again spoke with BT technical help, I could accept if only one PC failed to boot, but both following intervention from BT technical help remote access is more than just coincidence, but I now understand, BT accepts no responsibility nor offers any solution, compensation for the loss of hundreds of pounds worth of equipment, a warning should be issued to customers that intervention made by BT technical help remote access may result in loss of functioning PC. The only advice available from BT is to continue presenting the non functioning destop to to a PC vendor for repair at my cost, like I said in previous e-mails I would rather replace the desktop as continual repair costs would exceed the cost of a replacement desktop and would resolve the problem at my cost and prevent any further frustration dealing with BT, happy to close the complaint now as unresolved.

  • Install on a new PC after a hard disk failure on original install?

I lost the hard disk on my desktop, with Adobe X Pro installed (an update).  Purchased a new desktop, and installing my applications.  I can't access the failed hard disk, now only useful as a doorstop.  What are the correct steps to follow to get my license for X Pro up and running on the replacement desktop?

Did you get it installed? Do you have the license key? Did you make a backup DVD/CD of Acrobat? We have no clue where you are coming from. Adobe can help you with clearing the activation issue if that is the problem, but you need to have proof of purchase or such. You might see if you can log back in where you downloaded and see if you can get it again. It also helps if you have registered Acrobat.

  • How to view all files in subfolders?

I have a folder (call it folder A) and inside that about 60 subfolders with 5-50 files in each. Is there anyway I can view all the files in Folder A in the 'flat' ie in one window so I can sort them by creation date, modification etc (obviously, I want to do this without actually moving the files)

    ????? ???1 wrote:
Thanks! What I really want is creation date
    OK, use this:
cd ~/Desktop; ls -RU -alF | open -f
This lists the creation date rather than the mod' date.
Here you have to replace Desktop with A (or whatever); keep everything else the same, assuming the folder is sitting in your home directory and isn't a child of some other folder in your home directory (if it is a child of some other folder, see the last two examples below).
    NOTES
If the folder you want to search has a space in the name, you're going to need to add an escape character - that's a backslash \ - before the space:
    e.g.,
Suppose the folder you want to search is in your home directory and is called "My Docs", you'd use
cd ~/My\ Docs; ls -RU -alF | open -f
Whereas if the folder was just called "MyDocs", you'd just use
cd ~/MyDocs; ls -RU -alF | open -f
Suppose My Docs is inside your Documents folder, use
cd ~/Documents/My\ Docs; ls -RU -alF | open -f
Suppose My Docs is inside Work which is inside Documents, use
cd ~/Documents/Work/My\ Docs; ls -RU -alF | open -f

  • Can't update Adobe Bridge CS5

I just reinstalled Photoshop CS5 on my new replacement desktop processor.  I tried to update it but kept getting the message to close Adobe Bridge CS5.  It is closed.  I've tried the following suggestions from the FAQs:  (1) Went to Task Manager and confirmed that Adobe Bridge is closed.  (2) Tried to go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced to tell PS not to load Bridge at launch.  There is no Advanced and no check/uncheck capability.  (3)  Tried to download the 12.0.3 patch but can't find it anywhere in the downloads showing to me.  HELP!

I finally found the answer to my question by continuing to search.  Adobe Bridge was running in the background.  To stop it, I had to go to Task Manager>Processes.  Additionally,  Edit>Preferences>Advanced was in Adobe Bridge -- not Photoshop.  I'm all squared away.

  • [Discussion] Will you use Metro apps more in Windows 10?

With Windows 10 we will be able to run Metro apps in windowed mode on the desktop.
Now for those who tried the Windows 10 Technical Preview, I had a few questions to start a discussion.
Will this change the way you think about  Metro apps?
Will you use Metro apps more? If yes, which ones would you use?
Do you think they can replace desktop apps in Windows 10?
To start, I never used Metro apps really besides running them in splitscreen mode with my desktop apps in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. I use mostly PDF Reader, Facebook and the Mail app. The Mail app is really my favorite app. Because you can sync all your accounts in one mail program. Plus it's tablet-friendly. I have currently 3 mail accounts synced with Mail (Metro app).
Now with Windows 10 I will finally be able to open Metro apps at any given time without them getting in the way of all other apps that are running.
Something else why I prefer Metro apps is that we finally have a design which we have to follow or aim for. Something I hate is that every app tries to look unique. Some look very stylish, others look very primitive. But with Metro apps there is a standard where every app looks roughly the same but may differ in functionality. Metro apps work on both tablets and desktops. While desktop apps are not guaranteed to be tablet-friendly with their tiny controls.

    Hello,
I mainly exist in a "classic" Desktop (Win32) Windows world, so my use of Modern Windows apps is fairly limited.
That said, with the ability to run Modern Windows apps in a windowed (e.g., non-full-screen) mode and, of course, the continued release of additional apps, I expect to be running more of them over time.
