Replace parts of existing database in J2EE app.

We have an J2EE application, using one database for everything, but wants to change parts of the app to use another database, for example to connect to another database also, and get customer data from that database instead.
What do we need to do, to get data from a table in another database, instead of the current one?

surely this is a database problem? Your vendor will have export functions, examine these. You could always write a simple Java proggy to do it for you, but why not start with tools from your vendor first :)

Create the database in your app project and place it in isolated storage at first startup.

  • How to run a background process in a J2EE App ?

    Hi guys,
Here is the requirement which totally stumped me.
" The web app should have a feature like a background process or something like cron jobs.. which keeps on running in the background and at a particular time each day calls a method". User intervention is not an option.
Now had this been a stand alone app .. I could have done this using Threads.. but i cant possibly use threads in a J2EE app. Any pointers.. how I can go about realizing this
    Thanks for your replies.
    Cheers!

You could take the approach that SoulTech mentioned and spawn a new thread from the Servlet's init method. To have the servlet invoke this method with no intervention, you would need to set the following parameter in your servlet definition in your web.xml:
    <servlet>
      <servlet-name>MyStartupServlet</servlet-name>
      <servlet-class>com.my.company.MyStartupServlet</servlet-class>
      *<load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>*
</servlet>When you deploy your application, the servlet will be loaded, and its init method will be called.
If your application is running in a servlet container, I believe you are allowed (by the specification) to spawn your own threads, but you should do so carefully. Since you're writing a scheduler and not some kind of worker threads that are messing with your database, I think you should be okay. Still, just to keep it clean you should add any clean-up logic you may need to your servlet's destroy method. I know that in an EJB container, spawning your own threads can definitely be a problem and the container makes no guarantees that they will function correctly. The J2SE Timer class could be used if you're not using EJB, but the Timer class doesn't have support for J2EE - that's at least part of what led to the introduction of the timer beans in J2EE 1.4. If you're already using EJB, especially EJB 3.0, then the timer service provides a convenient built-in mechanism to do exactly what you want.
There are always multiple ways to solve any problem...

  • MMS J2ee app made with JBOSS want to use it with JRUN

    Hello fellow developers,
I am very interested in creating a small website for uploading photos from my cell phone to a j2ee app running on a JRUN 4 server.
I've downloaded the J2, JSR-212 SAMS Messaging API EJB Reference Implementation, from the nokia site. II also down load an MMSC and SMSC simulator from NOkia, which I believe developers can use in conjunction with testing the above ejb web application.
Briefly this is what I think is happening so far from reading tid bits here and there like the aritcle in Java Boutique.
It seems todescribe the SAMS api as being generic enough to accept all clients that supply SPI, which I believe is the interface that verizon, cingular, or that some other cell phone service might provide. This interface allows the forwarding of a text message or media message to another operation ( like yahoo mobile). Thus, when I send my photo to a [email protected], it goes to the MMSC that communicates through SPI say a SAMS J2EE applicaiton running on yahoo, which presents my recently snapped cell phone photo in my yahoo phone album.
I would like to test this J2ee app I download from nokia. However, in part of the instructions it claims that a person must down load JBOSS 4.0.
Does any one know if this Nokia J2ee app for JBoss can be used on a JRUN 4?
Can the NOKIA SMSC/MMSC simulator I downloaded work as well with JRUN4, as I notice the word JBOSS when I was installing this Simulator?
Does anyone know where, I can get anymore information on SAMS and how to implement it in a simple J2ee app?
When we can upload a cell phone photofrom the web browser of our phone than we will have arrived!.

    Hi,
The project conventions are new and early access version1. So it will be changing a little bit and as a result the apps may get a little out of sync. We are currently switching the apps over to match with the project conventions. For an app that dempnstrates project conventions, please see the adventure builder on java.net at https://adventurebuilder.dev.java.net/
We are working on a revised version of the project conventions, so your feedback/comments would be highly appreciated.

  • Sync existing contacts from Adressbook.app with iPhone fails

    Hi!
Syncing works as advertised between my Mac, .Mac, Addressbook.app and my iPhone for ALL NEW CONTACTS, no matter where they are created (iPhone or Mac).
However ... if I choose to sync an old contact from Adressbook.app with iPhone the sync process in iTunes will always stall!
    My setup, looks like this:
I sync a dedicated group of Addressbook.app with iPhone. Whenever I choose to add an old, existing contact from my Addressbook database to this group the next sync and all ongoing syncs will quit unexpectedly. iTunes will show a message telling me that iPhone disconnected.
The only way to cure this behavior I have come across is to manually
    * enter a new contact with the existing data in Addressbook.app and adding it to my iPhone group
    * delete the existing contact in Addressbook.app
    * sync via iTunes
This is VERY annoying and tedious.
Anyone with a solution besides resetting sync history in iSync? This doesn't seem to help.
    Thanks

    Hi Shady!
I don't think that clearing the sync history is the only cure to this problem. At least it does not help for me. I believe that the problem with contact syncing is not monocausal, hence the cure with the sync history won't heal the manifold of root causes.
    My situation is as follows:
What works great when syncing back and forth between the iPhone and the addressbook.app
. *Adding new* contacts or updating contacts +on the iPhone+
. *Editing or updating existing* contacts +on the iPhone+
    . *Adding new* contacts +in addressbook.app+
What does not work at all:
. Choosing any existing (created before using or syncing with iPhone) contact and sync it with the iPhone
I sync only a certain group in addressbook.app, not all contacts.
The only way to cure this problem for me so far: Adding a new contact on iPhone or addressbook.app, which is a pain given that all the contact data is already present.
Interesting enough this was not a problem from the beginning. During the first couple weeks or months I could choose any of my "old" contacts and grow that group as I saw fit and everything worked flawlessly...
    Very disappointing...

  • Reverse engineering for existing database

    Hi,
I have two different databases, one with my application (i.e. DB1), and the other with the designer installation (i.e.DB2).
I want to get the Reverse Engineering of my app in DB1, and I know these steps:
    - Design Editor> DB Admin tab> Generate> Capture design of > Server Model.
OK, but I get the "Create Database user" form, and the database and user name as "DEFAULT".
What do I have to do?
I just want designer to reverse engineer my DB1, and I think that it will store that meta info in the DB2. Am I correct?
I have created a new workarea and container for that purpose, but should I create a "Oracle database" before capturing the server model? and that database, should be the DB1 or the DB2? both are already created, so I think that I need just the connection.
    thanks.

You've basically got this right - DB1 is the database you are capturing from and DB2 contains the Designer repository into which the metadata is being captured.
Designer wants to have a database definition and a schema definition in the repository to which it can attach your table definitions. In the Design Editor use the DB Admin tab to get to a place where you can create a database definition. Create an Oracle data definition for your application database (DB1) and create a schema definition (aka User) in that database to own your tables. Then those will appear as options in the Capture design of Server Model wizard.
Yes, I know - a lot of steps for what seems to be a simple task - reverse engineer an existing database. That's Designer for you. This is one of the reasons that I say that if ALL you want is to see your database in a server model diagram, Designer is overkill. But Designer can do SO MUCH more than that - if you want to fully use it, the annoyances are worth it.

  • How to mapping Entity beans to existing database tables.

    dear all
how can i mapping Entity beans to existing database tables and not to create new table in Orion.
    thanks for any input.

    * You define the name of the table that an Entity EJB maps to in orion-ejb-jar.xml. For eg:<entity-deployment name="MyEntityEJB" data-source="MyDS" table="MY_DB_TABLE" ...>* If you don't want to let Orion create the tables for your EJBs, have the following entry in either of the files given below:<orion-application autocreate-tables="false" ...>1) <orion-home>/j2ee/home/config/application.xml (global effect)
    2) orion-application.xml file of that particular application (application specific)

  • Building and deploying J2EE apps ?  Now there is a solution for production root cause analysis.

Is your organization building and deploying J2EE apps? If so, Halo
can help solve one of the toughest issues facing enterprises today:
Finding the root cause of software faults.
"Halo monitors, pinpoints, reports on and provides a source-code level
root cause of software faults in deployed J2EE apps. Halo is unique
because it's the only technology that can give you a root cause
diagnosis in a fully deployed, live production application. Halo has
such low performance overhead that customers deploy their final,
production versions of their applications with Halo enabled.
Used with Web Application Servers like WebLogic, Halo helps ensure
that deployed code is reliable and able to be quickly fixed if
problems turn up. Most important, because Halo is an "always on"
technology, you get all the information you need to rapidly solve a
problem on the first fault. Problem replication and bug reports are
    obsolete with Halo
"Halo has a unique ability to provide a root cause diagonosis and
    understanding
of software problems in production systems, without needing to
    replicate the
    issue.
Test on WebLogic proved that Halo runs with extremely low overhead and
is suitable for use in deployed production systems"
    Andrew Sliwkowski, Software Engineer

The key is Halo's high performance, low overhead TraceBack
instrumentation technology. Based on technology out of MIT and proven
in the field, TraceBack enables you to instrument JARs, EARs and WARs
within minutes, without touching source code.
Halo is useful throughout the entire application life cycle, from

I have two questions. We have just started developing apps using jdev9i, 9iAS v2 and are new to the j2ee environment so my questions may be very easy ones.
Question 1: We have set up Oracle pooling connection to our databases. We have a development, test and production database. When I deploy my application, it includes the connections. This is preventing me from moving the EAR files from dev to test to prod without modification and re deploying to my EAR file. Is there a way or a place that I can put my database connections that will not be included in my EAR files and the application still find them?datasources.xml is where the info regradings connection to databases is licated. If you're using 9iAS
you can use EM to create datasource entry at the global level. In OC4J standalone you could use admin.jar
or edit the file. Check out the standalone user's guide at http://otn.oracle.com/tech/java/oc4j/pdf/oc4j_so_usersguide_r2.pdf.
Also, you will othe OC4J docs on OTN.
Question 2: I have a stand alone oc4j set up for our developers to use while testing their applications. The applications include libraries supplied in jdev such as xml parser v2. I do not want to deploy those lib files with the app because I will have to redeploy all my apps if I upgrade jdev. I just want to be able to upgrade the libraries, test the apps and not have to redeploy everything. I can do this by coping the jdev lib to 9iAS but I can't seem to find the right place to put the lib for the stand alone oc4j instance. You can use the library tag within application.xml for server wide availability. Check out the article
http://otn.oracle.com/oramag/oracle/02-sep/o52oc4j_2.html specifically class loading in OC4J section
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • Urgent Help: Cluster.Framework - metaset No existing databases

    Guys,
I made a mistake and reparation some disks after configuring them as part of a diskset. Now I am not able to do anything with this diskset!!!
    Please help:

I have tried taking ownership using the command
    metaset -s sogds -t -f
but I get the following error message:

Could someone help me out in removing the diskset. I cannot do it using
metaset, as I am prevented from becomming the owner of the set etc.
    Thanks for your help.

Can you not take the set on either node? If you can take it on the ema03b node, then you might be able to delete host ema03a and then re-add it. (At least that's what some of the bugs I've looked at suggest)
Otherwise, log a call with the Sun support team.

  • Software migration to SAP but want to keep the existing database

    Dear experts,
My company is planning to replace existing business applications (ASP or ASP .NET applications & Oracle database) with SAP software. Some applications are even still under development. To avoid complete code rewriting, is it possible to keep the existing database & only use ABAP for application logic & user interface instead?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Haris

    Hi,
SAP database table structure and ASP .NET database table structure are totally different. Hence simply keeping the base oracle database same and changing the covering programming layer from ASP to ABAP won;t help.
You will need to redevelop everything in ABAP from scratch.
    Hope this answers your query.

    GO

RESTORE DATABASE [TESTONE] FROM DISK = N'C:\TEMP\testone.bak' WITH RECOVERY, FILE = 1, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 5
    GO
the restore command doesn't contains  WITH REPLACE clause and ....
if you expand the tables tree you'll find your deleted table
    the database has been overwritten
    Why?

That is the default behavior or RESTORE. Since you are restoring the same DB (not a different DB) and the DB is in simple recovery mode, it will overwrite the existing DB. See https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms186858.aspx.
Here is an excerpt from this link:
    REPLACE Option Impact
REPLACE should be used rarely and only after careful consideration. Restore normally prevents accidentally overwriting a database with a different database. If the database specified in a RESTORE statement already exists on the current server and the specified
database family GUID differs from the database family GUID recorded in the backup set, the database is not restored. This is an important safeguard.
The REPLACE option overrides several important safety checks that restore normally performs. The overridden checks are as follows:
Restoring over an existing database with a backup taken of another database.
With the REPLACE option, restore allows you to overwrite an existing database with whatever database is in the backup set, even if the specified database name differs from the database name recorded in the backup set. This can result in accidentally overwriting
a database by a different database.
Restoring over a database using the full or bulk-logged recovery model where a tail-log backup has not been taken and the STOPAT option is not used.
With the REPLACE option, you can lose committed work, because the log written most recently has not been backed up.
    Overwriting existing files.
For example, a mistake could allow overwriting files of the wrong type, such as .xls files, or that are being used by another database that is not online. Arbitrary data loss is possible if existing files are overwritten, although the restored database is complete.
