Replaced hard drive in a Toshiba Satellite L45-57423 and now need to install windows
I recenly had to replace the hard drive in my old Toshiba Satellite. I no longer have (and am unsure I ever had, as I don't recall that the laptop came with one) the Windows recovery disk. Is it better to purchase a new recovery disk for this computer from Toshiba or to buy a Windows Installation disk?

Best to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery discs. All the drivers and utilities are properly installed. Obtain the discs from Toshiba by scrolling down to Get Recovery Media here.

If you still have only 1 GB of memory, that computer can barely run. Windows Vista needs at least 2 GB. See the section Adding Memory (optional), which begins on p. 46 of the User's Guide.

installed new hard drive in a Toshiba satellite S500-02J . Used recovery stick purchased from Toshiba. Windows installed and everything up and running, but when I go to do a windows update. I received this message: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."
Toshiba help line said it was a problem because new hard drive was not exactly the same as the old hard drive. It was a minor fix but wanted a $100 to perform the fix remotely.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

The probloem occurs because the new drive has advanced-format technology. All the new ones do. See this message from three years ago.
The fix is to install a new storage driver.

If you've messed around with drivers, you'll probably need to repeat the restore. Introduce the storage driver as early as possible.

my hard drive crashed on my MacBook Pro crashed and I need to get my CS5 up and running on the new hard drive. I copied what I could onto an external hard drive but when I drag and drop I get directions to uninstall but the uninstall folder I have does says it is an alias that is no longer present. I get error 6. I would like to get my software up and running on the laptop again please
If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc. you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod. I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard. -

Copy all the content on your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes. Then go ahead and sync the iPod with your new library.

AllterroIf your Macbook Pro (MBP) came preinstalled with OS X Lion (10.7), you can use Internet Recovery to reinstall it.
You will need an Internet connection.
Restart your Mac using Command+Option+R until you see a spinning globe. This will boot into Apple's server and load their Recovery HD.
From the OS X Utilities menu, select Reinstall OS X. You should see a Lion logo to the left of this option.
If your MBP came preinstalled with OS X Snow Leopard you will need the DVD and an external CD/DVD drive to use to install it.
You may also be able to put your MBP into Target Mode with another Mac running a version of OS X that is compatible with your MBP. From that other Mac download OS X from the App Store and point to your MBP (Target Mode) to install to. I've never tried this but it sounds like it might work. -
I have just installed a new hard drive in my imac intel 20" (2006) and upgraded the memory and now the hard drive does not show up in the 'select destinations' folder of the install program. I can see the hard drive in the disk utilities window however it wont let me do anything.
It is a seagate 1TB SATA II drive however it is displaying it as a 7.3 TB.
If anyone has any suggestions I would be happy to hear them.
I have tried to erase and partition and get the same error message each time, 'Input/Output error'.
I have tried starting the thing with the install disk which is Mac OS X (Tiger?) which came with the computer. No good.
Anyone?Thats correct. I can see it in the list however when I attempt to erase it or partition it it's like it's not being found or recognised and it throws up the input/output error message. I am pretty sure that the sensor it attached correctly and it is a SATA drive. I can see all the infor regarding the drive when disk utility is open and it all looks good but I cant access it or do anything with it. It's taunting me!
The install disk is in the drive and the install program runs right up to the point where you have to select the location for the install and there is just nothing in the box where you have to select the hard drive icon.
I have my suspiscions about the drive but any help would be appreciated. -
Hard drive replacement // Toshiba Satellite l800 series
The 640 GB hard drive has failed in my 2 year old Toshiba Satellite l855-S5210 laptop about 3 months ago, I finally ordered the recovery disks and. I am wondering if I can replace the hard drive with a 750 GB/ 1TB hard drive I found? Does it need to be made by Toshiba or can I put one in made by Segate?

Whist moving my iTunes folder to an external hard drive, (I was following this post: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1364) I seem to have accidentally deleted the itunes Media folder - I misread the last action point!
All the files transferred to the external hard drive as I can see them and I am able to copy them into itunes, but only links, and they're still organised.
Can anyone help me restore the folder structure so itunes can see the music?
I added a new cd to itunes so I could see where it is now saving music and it created a new folder where the music now resides (I guess as a deleted the file structure from previous it needed to create a new one). I thought I would be able to copy and paste the old music into this newly created fold but it doesn't seem to have worked.
Any advice on what I should do would be greatly received

Replace my notebook drive in a Toshiba Satellite 5100/5105 - Experience?
I plan to replace the failing CDRW/DVD-drive in my Toshiba Satellite 5100-503 (european version, it was sold as 5105 in the US and other countries).
The built-in drive is a UJDA730.
As upgrade I consider the highly regarded a Slimline DVD+/-RW drive. Unfortunately, some research on the internet revealed that upgrading a notebook's optical drive is not as straightforward as one might hope. I had no trouble removing my old drive (you only have to remove the keyboard and unscrew two screws), so I consider myself capable of putting in an new drive instead. However, two problems remain:
-mechanical compatibily: The 6500A appears to have a different front bezel layout. Its eject button and LED are in a different position than that of my current drive, so I doubt I will be able to use my old bezel with the other one. In addition, the bezel of my old drive has a recess in the lower right corner (similar to that found on some Fujitsu-Siemens notebooks), which gives room for the volume control of the notebook. So I cannot reuse the old bezel, and the NEC's bezel will probably not allow me to close the drive's tray. I wonder if some Dremel-work on the plastic parts of the NEC drive will allow me to fit it in physically. Has anybody tried that?
-electronical compatibility: notebook drives generally do not have jumpers to change their Master/Slave/cable select configuration. Instead this is set within the firmware, so changing it requires flashing a new firmware, which is not easy to come by and hard to do if your drive is not even recognized. SO I need to find out whether my notebooks needs the optical drive set to master, slave. cable select or "inverse cable select". Can anyone help me here, either by own experience or by directing me to an appropriate source on the web?@chris_cool: I very well know that the drive is not removable like the one in the 5200 or many other notebooks. But it is simply wrong that it is "only replaceble with the same model". Slimline drives are standardized, so their mounting holes, connector placement etc. are not the problem. The only problem ist the front bezel (which is made of plastic, and I won't hesitate to cut it to fit to my notebook) and the master/slave setting, which, since it usually cannot be changed via jumper like in standard IDE devices, has to "fit" to the notebook. My primary question is what master/slave-setting my notebook expects from an optical drive. Since the usual system utilities cannot discern a true "master/slave" setting from a master/slave configuration derived by using "cable select", I don't see a way to find this out myself.
BTW: I don't care too much if the bezel of the new drive doesn't look too good on my notebook, as long as it works.
Especially since I will get superior functionality (DVD-recording) while probably paying less than for an original spare part. And going with an external drive is absolutely no option, since I would have no optical drive when taking the notebook along. Even if I did lug the heavy external drive around, most of them need an AC adapter. Some are powered via USB, but since my notebook has only USB 1.1 which only transfers a (theoretical!) maximum of 1,5MByte/s, this would allow reading and writing of CDs at a maximum speed of about 6x-8x. Less functionality, less comfort, and a higher price -> no option.

Do you happen to know the configuration of the replacement drive you bought? Is it in a master, slave or "cable select" or "inverse cable select" configuration?
You say you changed the front bezel... I think this only worked because the drives are from the same manufacturer. I doubt I will be that lucky with the NEC drive, since LED, eject button etc. are in a different place. I don't mind cutting the NEC drive's bezel to fit. It won't look pretty, but I am quite confident that it can be done. Yet not a 100% sure... ;-)
I am not too much concerned about the recovery CD, since I am using Linux with the notebook anyway. -
C655: Physically replaced hard drive, NOW WHAT? Don't know the very next step.
Start of History: Received HDD failure message 2 weeks ago. Researched on here and discovered I would have to replace drive. Backed up computer with disks and it took 5 to get everything backed up and also made a "Repair disk Windows 7-64 bit". Purchased new drive and Upgraded memory (2ea X 4s=8) while I was in there. So, this morning I physically installed my new hard drive and memory. When I turned on the laptop, it asked for a boot disk. Couldn't remember if that was on the Repair disk, so I removed new hard drive, installed old drive and looked at Repair disk. It showed three boot "something" files. I reinstalled new drive and used the Repair disk to start computer. It did some "stuff" and then a pop up to choose "Toshiba Recovery Wizard" or "system recovery options". I have absolutely no clue which to use. Tried the SRO and it required me to select and search for "something" that lead me to believe it was just to repair the old drive. So, I cancelled and went back to the TRW. That lead to something asking me to install disks. The only disks I have are the back ups, so I tried them, but it read the 1st disk in about 3 seconds, then ejected it and asked me to "set the 1st disk". Don't even know what that means. "Set"? Whatever the case, I don't think I have the correct disks made from the old drive. End of History.
Currently have the old failing hard drive back in laptop till I get some answers. Hopefully before this thing dies for good. I purchased the laptop new and have the disks somewhere at home in Texas. I am on the air force base in Charleston and don't have immediate access to those disks and if I were home, it would take me a while to locate them. So let's assume they aren't availabe at this point. Here is what I need to know. Are there other disks that I need to create from my laptop? Which option should I be using TRWizard or SROptions? If TRWizard, what disks is it asking me to install? If someone is able and willing to educate me on each step regarding the software prior to removal of the hard drive and then the same baby steps at turning on the computer for the first time after physically installing new drive, that would be helpful. Constructive, "dumbed down", with crayola photos etc. I need step by step everything. Standing by and waiting for help...Satellite C655-S5128 - More here.

Give it a try. At the first opportunity, install the new Intel storage driver. (I've read reports of its being installed from a thumb drive prior to completing the restore.)

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

I have a 4th gen 20G ipod whose hard drive has died. Are replacement hard drives available through the apple store?
I don't think Apple will do that repair for you, because the iPod is too old. I believe the hard drive type used in 4th gen and older iPods is no longer produced. There may be non-Apple shops who can do the repair, but they may be using a working part salvaged from a used iPod.

NOTE: There are two hard drive physical sizes. The thick version has two platters, and corresponds to the "thick" iPods (with double storage capacity). A 4th gen 20GB model should be the thin version. The hard drive used in iPods up to 4th gen should work interchangeably, but 5th gen and later iPods use a different type.
I have a 4th gen iPod that started out as a 20GB. The hard drive failed, so I put a compact flash card on an adapter in there. The adapter is like this one (I bought it a few years ago so it's probably not the same seller)

The compact flash card is standard; I bought the cheapest one. I currently have an 8GB card in there, but prices have come down, so I may get a 64GB card soon. It works great with the 8GB card. No more hard drive spin-up delay. Battery lasts longer. It's lighter. And it should be more shock resistant.
The only mod I needed to make on the adapter was to bend over two pins 90º, where you place a jumper to set the drive to "master." The adapter plus CF card is actually smaller and thinner than just original 1.8-inch Toshiba hard drive; I used some thin foam packing material (cut to the right shape) to take up the excess space and ensure the adapter and card did not become disconnected.
The 4th gen iPod has excellent sound, compared to some later iPods.
