Replacement for iMovie HD - or much simpler iMovie 11 interface

Replacement for iMovie HD - or much simpler iMovie 11 interface
I have just upgraded from a tape DV to a HDD HD camcorder.
This has meant leaving behind my cherished i-Movie HD programme and using i-Movie11 (also moved to lion). I just want to do simple cuts and pastes on HD content(720p), add a start and end title, and then add some chapter markers - exportto i-DVD. Nothing more complex, no sound imports, green screen, camera shake, fades etc... I have "heard it said" that you can make i-Movie 11 looklike the old i-Movie HD set-up? That is a simple linear edit bar with a largeview screen.
My question is how do you do this? I have tried to use i-Movie 11 and it isso confusing!
If not is there a programme out there will do similar to i-Movie HD? (Lookedat FCX, FC Express, Premier, etc and they are all way to complex for my simpleneeds.)
At the moment the best I have found is the old Quicktime 7 pro, which cutsstuff out but not much of the rest.
Thanks!
Simon

Hi Simon,
.. I have "heard it said" that you can make i-Movie 11 looklike the old i-Movie HD set-up? That is a simple linear edit bar with a largeview screen.
Yes, you can activate a preference that shows the timeline as a single horizontal row, rather than the normal presentation which shows the timeline scrolling down the page (much like a word processing document). Click on the button containing 3 white squares - it's directly to the left of the comment and chapter marker buttons on the far right of the project window. See this pic:
You can adjust the size of the Viewer - go to the menu item Window>Viewer and select from Small, Medium and Large. You can also adjust the size of the Viewer by dragging down on an empty space on the centre tool bar.

  • Best datafile management practices for iMovie

I work across two different machines (my desktop and my laptop) on iMovie Projects.  My desktop has nearly all of my video stored on a 6TB external drive, but when I travel and want to bring along a project with me on a  portable 2 TB drive.  And then when I return, I want to be able to move the updated project back to my desktop and the 6 TB drive.
I will want to also be able to bring along all of the related event files so I can add or change video content, if need be.
One of the problems is variious resources tend to disappear (music from my iTunes libary and video clips and or pictures from Aperture)
So my question is what is the best approach to this problem.
    Suggestions?

You are asking really good questions.

Is file management using Final Cut Pro any easier?  How large is the learning curve for Final Cut Pro?
File Management is quite similar in Final Cut Pro X, but you have additional options. The paradigm of Events, Projects, and Archives is the same. You have more ability to use keywords, and more ways to search through your events. You can also rename clips for your convenience. You can't rename clips in iMovie without messing up the date metadata.
The learning curve is fairly large for Final Cut Pro. The basic interface is similar to iMovie, but at every stage you have many options and much more control. At minimum, you would want to get a good book on FCP, and you might invest in some of the video training that is available from Ripple Training or Larry Jordan.
If all you need is to make simple movies of 25 minutes or less, iMovie may be plenty. If you need more, the Final Cut Pro X is a great product.
It might be analogous to going from iPhoto to Aperture and Photoshop. It is doable, but some training helps.
Here are some of the key differences...
    1) iMovie uses Apple Intermediate Codec as the editing codec. Final Cut Pro uses ProRes 422 as the editing codec. (There are also more exotic flavors like ProRes 444, for the times when you need alpha channel in your video).
Apple Intermediate Codec is OK for iMovie, because in iMovie, you will only render a clip once, and the render is done when you Share your project.  Final Cut Pro is capable of making much longer movies with complex effects. You might do multiple renders on a clip, so it is important to have a codec that maintains high fidelity to the original even through multiple renders. ProRes 422 that codec. In addition, Apple Intermediate Codec uses a 4-2-0 colorspace while ProRes uses a 4-2-2 colorspace. I am not an engineer, but this means potentially more accuracy and more colors available.
    2) Final Cut Pro makes it easy to edit with multiple camera angles. Think of a rock video where there is a music track and you cut seamlessly between a wide angle shot, the lead guitar, the singer, and the drummer. This is easy in FCP. It is possible in iMovie, but only with a lot of manual effort.
    3) You have a lot more control over color managment in FCP.
    4) You have a lot more control over audio in FCP. In addition to built in sound editing capablilities, you have all the synthesizers from Logic Pro available to you as well.
    5) In your editing, you have a lot more capability in FCP.
    6) In essence, you can do everything you can do in iMovie, but a lot more, and with a lot more control.
    7) In addition, Final Cut Pro will import your iMovie Project and Events, if you like, and you can contiue editing them in FCP. However, you can contimue to edit them in iMovie as well. And if you do it correctly, it does not take up much more space on your hard drive. In other words, you will have a Final Cut event with a hard link to your physical clips, and you will have an iMovie event with a hard link to the same physical clips. It will look like 2 separate events, but you only use up the space of one event. The only downside of doing this is that you will be editing in Apple INtermdiate Codec.
    8) You can do simple greenscreen in iMovie. In FCP you have full control over making a compositing key and using it as you like.
    9) You can do simple speed changes in iMovie (fast or slow motion). In FCP, you have infinite control over the speed changes and you can select from 4 different modes of blending the frames so they look smooth.
I could go on and on, but that should give you an idea.
Here is the Help manual for FCP, if you want to browse around.

  • Confused about update iMovie 9.0.1 for iMovie '11

A few days ago I upgraded from iMovie '09 to iMovie '11 (iLife '11 package).
After the installation there were some software updates which I also installed.
Now (today) I'm offered another software update to download:
    iMovie 9.0.1 28.5 MB
I thought iMovie '09 was replaced with iMovie '11 on my hard drive?
Why shall I now install an update for '09??
    Shall I...?

I am trying to decide which iMovie to use on what computer. I will be doing movies that are probably a step above home movie. I want to do a movie about my grandfather and one for my reunion. Do I need a new computer? Mine are 4 years old. Which version would be the easiest with the least bugs? I have used Final Cut several years ago so I do have some expertise. I want ease of use with enough but not too many features. Would appreciate anyone's advice. Thanks so much.

  • Difference in graphic cards for Imovie HD edit

    Hi.
I plan to get a new Imac for imovie HD editing, upgrading a 2 ghz imac that is very short in memory, HD, and speed. I don't play games or do any 3d renderings.
What i would like to know is which process of the Imovie or Iphoto software would be benefited with better graphic cards.
For example for time consuming process like exporting a movie or doing a clip stabilization is it faster to have better graphics (4850 vs nvidia 130 vs nvidia 120) or faster processors (3.06 vs 2.93).
Thanks for any help you can give.

You will be much happier with 4850 especially when it comes to video like in iMovie or FinalCut. This is both immediatly and in the long run. 4850 will allow for a snappier GUI, much better performance under snow leopard, great video and image quality. (just do a search for which gpu platform video or photo creatives prefer on the mac. Ati usually wins out and Nvidia usually wins for 3d work IMHO.) Both 4850 and gt130 are great options though.
In the past ATI has had better drivers for the Core image and video functions in the mac. Recently, however, the 8800gt from Nvidia has seen significant improvement so the gt130 may not be a bad choice either.
    http://www.barefeats.com/harper16.html (example of past)
    http://www.barefeats.com/nehal06.html (example of present)
As I'm sure you already know, http://www.apple.com/imac/features.html#performance has some nice charts demonstrating the massive gains in the GPU with each upgrade (gt 120, gt 130, 4850). I just want to point out that the gains in ~100MHz CPU will pale in comparison to a GPU change.
The future is with using the GPU as a co-processor. Apple will do it. PCs are already doing it!!
http://ati.amd.com/technology/avivo/technology.html ("The ATI only Video Converter transcodes up to 17 times faster than with the CPU alone, one hour of video can be converted to a portable player format in about 12 minutes.")
http://www.badaboomit.com/ (for Nvidia only. 20x faster. Though I have seen firsthand results showing ati avt using the 48xx series trouncing other cards using badaboomit...for now)
Also, you can always get something like the turbo.264 HD. It has some quirks. I have never used it. I just use it to show that the CPU is greatly complimented by dedicated hardware such as this device or your GPU.
Suffice it to say, the GPU will be THE best option for you in my opinion.
    good luck

  • Third party software for imovie to enable Sony HD cameras to import footage

Pretty much I bought a camera that won't work with my Mac unless I jump through hurdles to make it do so. (which is nice because I spent a crap ton of money on the camera) Apple support told me I had to find third party software and that they have no clue when an update for imovie would come out which allowed avchd to read on a mac. Please god let some one solve my problem for me. I'm not too technically savoy so if the answer is complex, dumb it down a little. I really don't want to have to return the camera. it's a sony Sr-1 pretty sweet little guy and the jerks at best buy said it would be compatible with mac.

The answer is the same as in your original post:
iMovie: Cannot See or Control Camera

  • Will there be any plug ins or separate enhancement packages for iMovie 8?

Will Apple or 3rd parties offer new plug ins or Plus packages for iMovie 8 to restore themes, provide additional transitions, titles and special effects?

.. got a mail from Bruce too (as a few forum members, frequent posters in this section, are on a single-digit adress list...) ...
indeed, it looks like, Apple has 'forgotton' to include and document a kind of API/whatever, to allow 3rd party plug-ins...
as we all know, iM was a very reliable horse, and those plug-ins tought it new tricks.. (horses, dogs.. got lost in the metaphors......). the actual numbers of 'effects' is even reduced to the ones preinstalled in iM6 ... we all speculated about some simple pic-in-pic for all you podcasters... the new 'Crop' tool would be perfect... but is for one clip only.. the User Interface avoids any 'layers' (no audio tracks anymore...), so probably, that now famous scuba diving technician has no need to show the shark AND his wife's face expression simultanously...
iM08 seems to me an excellent fast 'movie video maker', with some astonishing, groundbraking, breathtaking User Interface Ideas.. (I still spread the fully fictitious rumor, Kai Krause has to do with it in some way )
... but is a totally new app, no iMovie/version ...

  • What is the best kids camera for iMovie '08? Flip or, say, IXUS/Elph?

My kids love creating video clips and the old camera they use is beginning to fall apart and I'm trying to figure out what to replace it with.
USER BRIEF: The goal is simplicity and ease of use, so iMovie '08 fits the bill. Video and audio quality are of secondary importance. They do want to be able to crop their clips and string them together into a movie.
I was on the verge of buying a Pure Digital Flip camera but I've discovered a rash of threads in various forums describing problems importing Flip video files into iMovie 8. I don't really want to get my kids involved in a video conversion workflow if it can be avoided.
The other option is to buy a regular compact digital camera with a movie option. We have a Canon IXUS 70 (a SD1000 Digital Elph in the USA) that produced acceptable clips that iPhoto imports automatically. iMovie '08 trawls the iPhoto library for clips than can be used as fodder for iMovie projects. Pretty easy, I wonder if there are any drawbacks.
So, my questions are: is the Flip an attractive option in an iMovie '08 environment? Or should I give my kids a regular compact (and if so, are any of the major brands using codecs that are more or less iMovie-friendly than others)?

    Here are some known issues:
My MAC Updater downloaded the new QT 7.4.5 on 5 Apr 2008. I have been making movies in iMovie, and then posting them to YouTube. In the beginning I uploaded the movies as MOV files but soon discovered AVI files (larger file and longer time to upload) had more clarity when viewed on YouTube. Once the new QT 7.4.5 downloaded all my AVI files had picture, but no sound! I downloaded the Perian component as posted in QT discussions. The sound returned to the AVI files. However, when I Exported an AVI movie from iMovie the picture quality was worse than the MOV movie. There is something wrong with the new QT 7.4.5 when working with AVI, my AVI movies look terrible. These AVI files were all downloaded from my Ultra Flip Video camera with Flip’s codec 3vix. Flip is aware of this problem and acknowledged it last Friday. Flip says Apple is aware of the problem.
My MAC PowerPc G4 has performed well in the past two months when working with the Flip Video camera. So, at Flip Video’s suggestion I upgraded the operating system to OS 10.5 from OS 10.4.11. Flip Video says their camera works with OS 10.5. Once OS 10.5 was uploaded I soon discovered that iMovie 08 would not operate on my PowerPc G4, 1.86 MHz. The speed requirement for iMovie 08 is 1.9 GHz.
At this point of “spinning my wheels for nearly a month” with this Flip Video camera, I decided to purchase a new iMac. On May 2, 2008, I walked out of the Apple Store in Walnut Creek with the new iMac 20-inch: 2.66GHz. Now the Flip video camera should work and all my video problems solved. However, this was not to be.
When I attempted to Import Flip Video AVI and MOV files into iMovie 08 the files were “grayed out” and would not Import. None of my previous Flip Video files would Import. I tried making new Flip Video movies, they also would not Import into iMovie 08.
At another Apple Store, the tech suggested I download the previous version of iMovie HD. I did this and with hours of working through the different Export options I was able to create movies to post again on youTube. However, the picture quality of the newer iMovies has never approached the quality of my last post before QT 7.4.5 downloaded. Remember my problems started with QT 7.4.5. Well, my new iMac came with QT 7.4.1, I have not Uploaded QT 7.4.5 and won’t until Flip Video fixes this problem.
Examples of my Flip Video movies can be viewed on youTube at: sffoggydays. The last video with excellent picture quality was posted 6 Apr 2008 titled “A Day at the San Francisco Zoo, Chapter Nine, L-Taravel Ride to BART.” This video was made in iMovie and Exported before QT 7.4.5 downloaded. All the youTube Flip Videos made after 6 Apr 2008 have poor picture quality.
It is time for Flip Video camera to stop “passing the buck” to Apple. When manufactures of operating system such as Apple and Microsoft create newer and upgraded systems, it is the responsibility of the manufactures of applications to redo the programs for operating on the new systems. Here is where Flip Video is not accepting this responsibility to Mac users of their camera. The Flip Video application/codex/drivers need to be updated in order to fix the following problems:
    - No sound on AVI files in QT 7.4.5
    - No Import of AVI and MOV files in iMovie 08
    - Poor picture quality for youTube in Export of iMovie HD
I like my Flip Video camera, want to continue making movies for youTube, and recommending the camera to others. The Flip Video camera people need to fix these problems for Mac users.
I am still making Flip Video of my grandkids.

  • Best introductory documentation/tutorial for iMovie 10

    iMovie 10.0.4 on 10.9.4 (iMac mid-2011).
iMovie has always been one of those Apple programs that I thought I knew how to use; but - now I suddenly have to do a fairly simple project 'for real' in it - find that I actually don't!
Anyone got any recommendation, please, on really good tutorials, introductory documentation etc for iMovie 10 - ideally free videos?

  • More Titles for imovie 09

I was wondering if i could download even more imovie titles for imovie 09. I didn't know if there are plug ins I can download or something. Any information would help

    artistjoh wrote:
.. iMovie 06 was more sophisticated than iMovie 09. Is this the case and could it do things like add animated images?
    Yes.
iMHD6 was a 'real', timeline based NLE. it lacked a few of iM09's features as greenboxing and pic-in-pic, but due to an API, you were allowed to teach iM new tricks by plug-ins.
have a look on this website: www.geethree.com
they still offer an awesome bunch of plugins for incredible effects, transitions and titles..
    for stop-motion..
yepp, iMHD6 allowed a 'length' of clips down to 1 frame (iM09 is limited to 3frames), allthough I recommend designated tools as FrameByFrame or - bestofshow - iStopmotion (onion-skinning, stuff...).
if you like to make a bunch of drawings into a 'video', QuicktimePro offers a simple conversion of an Image Sequence to .mov..
have a look here, my 'Say Cheese Productions'-intro.. that is done with QTpro..:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7-BHrrF-EE&hd=1
iMHD6 was the little brother of FCE, which is the little sister of FCP..
iM09 is a from scratch new app.. just sharing the name, but totally diff. app and usage (a 'clean'n upload-tool, I like to say)

  • How do you "import" AVCHD 60P from Canon camcorder so it can be "converted" for iMovie?

Low-tech guy here.  I don't know video formats and I don't edit video often.  I used my new Canon VIXIA HF R400 camcorder to record high-quality video (AVCHD 60P) not realizing when I connected my camera to my MacBook Pro the video does not even appear for import onto the computer.  I realize I have to convert the format to one iPhoto and iMovie will recognize, but my question is how do I even get my computer to see the video on my camera so I can drag it into a converter software?  I see several chats about how to convert, which assumes the software can see the video on the camera - my problem is I can't even get my computer to see the video so I can then import and covert it.  I've tried Bigasoft AVCHD converter software and the AVCHD Converter by iFunia, but neither software sees the video.  (The Bigasoft doesn't even recognize my camcorder.  iFunia recognizes the camera but doesn't see the video clips.)

Thank you for trying to help me.  I may just be hopeless.  As I mentioned I don't know my video formats (though I've tried to learn now).  I just upgraded to Maverics (thank you!) and was pleased to see that now iMovie recognizes my Canon camcorder, but it does not "see" my individual video clips.  The thumbnails are just blank and I'm not able to check mark any of them (see image).  Maybe the format is just too high-quality for iMovie?  It's AVCHD 60P (or 1080p?)  I don't know what the difference is between the two.  iMovie used to be so simple I didn't need to know that.  I just wanted to put together a simple movie quickly.  I'll have to let go of the dream and let go of iMovie!  LOL  Again, thanks for trying to help!

  • How to license stock footage for iMovie - Try VidLib for iOS

Simple and Elegant video licensing with VidLib
    Available for iOS, OSX
If you have been searching for a professional video footage app that can sit on your desktop or on your tablet to take your copy of Final Cut into the next frontier, then look no further than VidLib. A brand new and ultra powerful app, available for download for OSX and iOS, VidLib can be used with the legendary video editing software as well as any other preferred package. The VidLib app is fully transportable for the ultimate in convenience and can be used to deliver seamless, quicker and more straight forwarding video editing to a professional standard on a traditional Mac or PC or on a tablet or smartphone.
Although it was only officially launched a few weeks ago, several video editors who have relied on Final Cut as their professional video editing software of chose are finding their workday has been revolutionised by  VidLib. With more than 100,000 royalty free videos and the ability to license the footage with a straightforward and secure in-app purchase, the comprehensive stock footage video library takes the complication out of video editing.
With the VidLib app downloaded and installed, thousands of clips are placed within easy reach, all logically archived and ready to be used on Final Cut and other professional editing suites immediately. While iOS apps only have iMovie available for editing, on the Mac you can use any editing suite you want, including Final Cut.
Coupling VidLib OSX download with an existing copy of Final Cut means or iMovie with iOS version of VidLib means editors will always have useful and ready to use video footage on their desktop or device. The clips are purchased using an in-app process and can be edited as needed using FinalCut or iMovie with no delays or file type conversions required to actually get started. With this simplistic and innovative approach to editing, there are no lengthy licensing forms to fill in and send back before the clip can be used.
What's more, with VidLib and Final Cut working together, there is no need to go online, type in a website address and browse through a new URL in order to find appropriate video footage. The VidLib app sits on the desktop or iPhone / iPad giving the clip at the click of a mouse, rather than after an internet session.
VidLib also loads considerably faster than 'conventional' image and video download sites, giving even quicker access to clips, all of which are pre-cleared and royalty free.

    iOS http://app.vidlib.com

Your camera does not appear on the supported cameras list for iMovie '09 (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3290) but does appear in the iMovie'11 list (http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US).
So, I think you have to update your iMovie version.  There are 2 options
    1.  Update to iMovie '11 which came with iLife '11.  If you don't have an ilife '11 installer DVD you will need to purchase it from for example Amazon.
    2. Since you are already running Mavericks, the app store should allow you to upgrade to iMovie 10 (which also supports your camera) but be prepared for the big changes in this version.
    Geoff.

  • Final Cut Pro similar plug-ins for iMovie?

I'd like some more functions for my current movie editing software (iMoive '09), are there any plug-ins for imovie that have FCP features? Features like multicam, screen on screen, split screen , green screen, after effects, hd camera support, etc....
I would just buy FCPX (maybe in the future, but not now) but I don't want to pay $300 + tax for an app with physical disk and packaging that I end up not liking, and I also don't have a credit card for the Mac App Store version. I would try torrenting it but I've heard some rumors of it crashing the whole computer, phising and what not. I'd rather take my chances with iMovie plug-ins than a pirated copy of FCPX.
I wish there was a cheaper version like how Autodesk does their whole express and pro versions (Sketchbook Express/Pro, AutoCad Express/Pro), I am aware that at one point there was a FCP Express that's now discontinued....

I appreciate that you don't have a credit card to use on the Mac App Store, but iMovie '11 is available for the paltry sum of US$14.99 - this latest version has some of the effects you are seeking, such as Picture in Picture, Side by Side and Green Screen. iMovie '09 may also have some of these features (I can't recall, as I've been using iMovie '11 for some time now).
Both iMovie '09 and '11 support HD cameras and a range of formats. If a format is not supported, it is relatively easy to convert clips to a suitable editing format for iMovie.
In Australia, cards (such as Visa) are available for a nominal value from the local supermarket. These can be safely used for internet purchases, given their specific value. So, you purchase a card for pretty much the exact value you require, make your purchase then destroy the card. I guess a similar thing is available in the US and other countries. That may be a good option for you if you wish to purchase apps from the Mac App Store.

  • External drive configuration for iMovie events

I have a lot of old 8mm & mini dv tapes, that I want to get transferred to external hard drives to edit in iMovie. Once transferred, I plan to back them up and store the backups, then edit and organize. I just upgraded to a new iMac and do not have the firewire 400 port any longer. It seems that the USB connection would be too slow to do iMovie editing on external drives. I would like to use internal drives in a dual or multi dock.
I have several 500G, firewire 400, external hard drives, daisy chained together that I have already I filled. They take up too much space, outlets and cables, so I'm switching to internal drives with a dock.
Someone mentioned that you can get a dock that holds multiple hard drives, which seems might allow faster transfer speeds between them for editing, between the drives. (as well as need less cables/outlets, etc). If I am editing in iMovie, I would think a firewire 800 dock would be preferable versus a USB.
I've seen dual USB 2.0/eSATA (or USB 3.0 docks, which I don't think Apple is supporting right now). Can you use a dual eSATA drive with an iMac (can you use an adapter)?
I also saw some 4 bay towers online, but I don't think that's what I'm after. I'm not sure that I would be swapping them alot. I would like it all together in order to create projects with clips from various years.
So I'm wondering what would be the ideal configuration for iMovie editing on a new iMac? I am thinking a firewire 800 dual dock might be ideal (I am sure 2-2Tb internal drives should be more than enough to hold all my video, until I edit it down). Would that be too sluggish? I guess I could work with 2-1Tb drives and swap them out, if that would be too much.
Any recommendations on a dock? Newegg has a pricey dual IcyDock with FW 800 for $180

  • Text Effects for iMovie

I am looking for some plug-in text effects for iMovie 08, I could settle for iMovie HD 6 or Final Cut Express. Specifically I am looking text bubbles or comic bubbles.
Can anyone help me in my search?
    Thanks
    Gene

I am looking for some plug-in text effects for iMovie 08
iMovie '08 does not currently have a "plug-in" architecture compatible with plug-ins.
I could settle for iMovie HD 6 or Final Cut Express.
iMovie HD v6.0.4 is available as a free download to iLife '08 owners.
Specifically I am looking text bubbles or comic bubbles.
Such effects are easily created with most graphic applications and can be applied from within iMovie '08.
