Replacing windows desktop with a mac

I currently have a macbook pro, 2009, and a windows desktop.  I'd like to replace the desktop with a mac, but will need to run windows on it for Quicken.  So, what would be the most economical alternative? A mac mini? I also have Fujitsu scanner for mac which the new computer must support.  I would consider a new or used mac.  Also, is Bootcamp the best way to plan on doing mac and Windows?
Thanks!

The Fujitsu ScanSnap works great on the Mac and is accessible through its own software, VueScan, or EverNote among many other software packages. As far as using Windows and Quicken, Bootcamp is an either/or proposition and not both at the same time. On the other hand Parallels Desktop will run Windows and Windows applications on the OS X desktop and happliy transfer data from one environment to the other. In eithercase you will need to purchase and install a copy of Windows and while Windows is running your Mac will be as vulnerable to Windows malware as any Windows computer so you will also need a good security suite that would otherwise be unnecessary. A Mac mini or an iMac would be a more thqan adequate desktop computer. If you are buying an new monitor for the Mac Mini the final price will be pretty close to that of an iMac. If you are planning on using the monitor from your PC then the Mac mini will save you anywhere up to $1,000 or more. I switched from an iMac to a Mac mini when I got tired of essentially buying a new monitor every time I upgraded my computer and I am very please with the performancek of my mini. The Fusion drive helps -- a LOT.

    When I replaced my PC desktop with a Mac Mini and hooked up my HP printer to it, I discovered that my other computers on the Wi-Fi network could no longer access the printer.  The manual says Maverick OS will not allow PC's to share the printer. Does anyone else have this problem?  My printer does not have on-board Wi-Fi but, otherwise, works fine.  I shouldn't have to buy a new one.  Is there a OS patch out there that would open the printer port for my PC computers?

    I'm assuming that on the Mac, the System Preferences -> Sharing -> Printer Sharing -> [X] HP printer -> Everyone can print is selected?  That is to say, the Mac will allow anyone to print using the printer, and that you did not try to restrict who can print.
    How is your network configured?  Bonjour as a protocol will NOT cross a router boundary.  If you have 2 or more subnets active with the PCs on one subnet and the Mac on another, that would block the PCs from seeing the Mac.
    You could have multiple subnets if you have more than one router, such as an ISP provided broadband modem/router and another WiFi Router.  If the PCs are talking to one router and the Mac is talking to another, that could be a 2 subnet situation.  The additional routers must be put into bridge mode, which is done differently depending on the router.  But the basics are to diable DHCP and NAT services on the secondary router(s) having just one active router on the network.
    Also, using Bonjour Browser on my Mac, it is showing me that the printer is being advertised as using Internet Printing Protocol, so if that is something selectable on Windows, maybe you can bypass Bonjour on Windows.

  • Replacing a windows server with a Mac server

    Hi all,
    So this is a big company with about 150 employees using PC's (win xp and 7), considering replacing the current Windows server with a Mac server.
    Is it possible to give users profiles once they log in like Windows server does? So when the user logs in they get to their own personal stuff? Can Mac server do that?
    Can the user also get to the default printer and send prints to it regardless where they log in from inside the company?
    And can the home directory to each user NOT be copied anywhere on the local machine where they log in? Meaning that after they log out there will be no traces to their files on that local PC..
    Thanks a lot in advance!!

    By some standards, 150 is not "big" but a large small business :-)
    Regardless, please plan and test and plan some more, very carefully !
    The picture for what you want to do once looked far better with 10.6 server but that had its limitations as well.
    With 10.6 server, Apple was using Samba - they are no longer doing so,
    but/and the version of Samba they were using only provided NT-Domain level support.
    So that would not work with your Win 7 stations either. But could be made to work relatively well with XP workstations. You can no longer buy any new Mac that runs 10.6 server and 10.6 server would be hard to obtain.
    Not a great route to go.
    Bear in mind that the key problem with Apple's Samba was that Samba changed their licensing,
    and there's not a thing in the world Apple could do to implement a current version of Samba without violating their own operating principles and the licensing requirements.
    You'll be heading into heavily uncharted territory here. Odds are good that any desired domain-functionality is not going to work for you.
    Honestly, Apple appears to have thrown in the towel on directory-level support for Windows,
    and the best way to support Windows workstations in that regard is with Windows server and AD.
    Basic filesharing works, with some caveats.
    If there's no AD involved at all, then have a look at my earlier post,
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3206725?start=47
    Which worked a-ok for me but your mileage may vary.
    Samba new current versions and GPL3 licensing issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3206725?start=75&tstart=0
    "GPLv3 makes it impossible to provide signed binaries without also providing the signing keys. A few seconds of thought will reveal why Apple is unwilling to provide copies of the keys they use to sign system software. Part of locking down OS X security profile required removing anythign that used GPLv3.
    Short version: GPLv3 is specifially desinged to be anti-company, and you are going to see a ever widening schism in the FSS/OSS community between GPL and all the other licenses, and you will be seeing less and less GPL code in commercial OSes and more BSD/Apache/&c code."

  • Can i set up remote desktop with my Mac Air and Windows 7 HP desktop?

    I am wanting to set up remote desktop with my Mac Air and HP windows 7 home edition desktop.  Is this possible and how do I begin setting this up?
    Thanks for the help!

    There is an app in the Mac App Store to use Microsoft Remote Desktop with a Mac: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/microsoft-remote-desktop/id715768417?mt=12
    But according to their support site it requires Pro, Enterprise, or Ultimate in the Windows 7 side. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn473006.aspx
    If it was me, I would first look into Teamviewer to see if it will do what you need. It does work between Mac and Windows and it is free for non-commercial use. http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx

  • I want replace my desktop with a iPad to do emails and Microsoft office work. Can this be effectively done? What's the downside if any?

    I want replace my desktop with a iPad to do emails and Microsoft office work. Can this be effectively done? What's the downside if any?

    I'll go down your list one by one.
    1. Access mail - which I know that the iPad can do.
    Enough said.
    2. Save an excel or word or ppt of PDF attachment for review.
    You can view these types of documents natively on the iPad as Tgara has mentioned.
    3. Open an review and maybe change a excel or word file.
    There are many apps that allow this.  I personally prefer Apples iWork programs, Pages, Numbers, Keynote.  They tightly integrate with iCloud.
    4. Resave such above files.
    With Pages, Number, Keynote you can save/resave files in iCloud and locally.  Also you could use dropbox to save your files on dropbox and provide a way for you to share a folder with coworkers/family and they can add/view/review files from there and you can see the changes on your device.
    5. Reply to a mail attaching a file.
    This is possible in many ways.  From dropbox, or another app you can email files with the share button.
    6. Be able to rename files and store them in specific folders.
    This goes back to dropbox/iCloud.  iOS doesn't really have a traditional file system.  If you save a PDF it isn't saved anywhere you can just open it.  You would have to open an app that supports view PDFs and select the PDF you wish to view.  The same goes for documents, spreadsheets and etc.
    Hopefully this helps answer your questions.

  • Is it possible to run a Windows domain with a Mac Server?

    Looking for some advice on getting rid of our Windows domain controller (DHCP server, AD, etc.) in favour of a Mac Server (which we own).  Is it possible to run a Windows domain with a Mac Server?

    Snow Leopard Server (10.6) and earlier included Samba which supported acting as an NT Domain Controller (this pre-dates Active Directory). Lion (10.7) and later as standard can no longer act as an NT Domain Controller nor can they act as an Active Directory server.
    So the short answer is no.
    Theoretically you could port Samba4 to a Mac and Samba4 can act as an Active Directory server. In reality this is not going to be easy but is theoretically possible.
    An easier option might be to run a copy of Linux (e.g. Ubuntu) in a virtual machine e.g. using VirtualBox and then run Samba4 in that and configure it to act as and Active Directory server. Then you could connect the Mac side to the Samba4 Active Directory server. This approach would use all Mac hardware, and not have any extra costs of licenses to buy and as far as all the rest of the network is concerned would be a standard Active Directory server environment.

  • Merge two iTunes Libraries?  From Windows Desktop PC to Mac Laptop?

    I have just bought a new Mac laptop and would like to move all my iTunes stuff over onto the laptop from my old Windows desktop PC. While this situation is problematic enough, I also happen to have some 100+ songs on the laptop that need to stay, so I'm wary of simply copying files over and overriding things. I don't want those songs, playcounts and playlists to be lost.
    As far as transferring the data goes, unless networking these computers is best, I'd like to use an external harddrive. The external drive has always been used with Windows computers in the past - will that pose a problem?

    Download and use this tool. The drive's format shouldn't be a problem.

  • Replace PC desktop with a notebook (MacBook)?

    Would I notice an appreciable loss of performance in LR if I replace a desktop PC with a low-end MacBook?
    Or in other words
    Is LR performance affected much by whether the catalogue is stored on a dedicated internal 7200RPM drive or a USB 2 external drive?
    ]Yes, I know this sort of thing gets asked all the time. But I have hunted around and haven't found what I am looking for (not helped by the pretty ordinary interface of this forum).
    ]And no, I'm not that interested in hearing "Macs rule, PCs suck"-type responses. This is probably more a question of "desktop with internal drives v. laptop with external drives", but if I am ever going to swap platforms now is probably the time, and I may as well provide all relevant information.
    More info if necessary ...
    I have a nine month old PC desktop that I use for LR, browsing, email, etc. 1.8GHz, 2GB RAM, 2x 320GB 7200rpm drives (one dedicated to photos and LR database), running XP Pro SP2, hooked up to a 22" Philips CRT.
    I have a 25000-odd photo LR catalogue, with another 15000 photos waiting to be added.
    If I get a MacBook I envisage mothballing the PC (too hard trying to keep two different computers in sync, let alone trying to constantly swap between two different OS's).
    I would likely get the 2Ghz base model, immediately upgrade the RAM to 4GB, and replace the HDD with a 320GB model (all up cost about the same as the new mid-range model). I am keen to limit costs, and as the MacBook will simply sit on my desk, plugged into my existing CRT, for 98% of the time I don't think I can justify a MacBook Pro.
    If the consensus is that purchasing a MacBook as a sole computer isn't such a good idea, then I'll probably get a cheap Dell laptop, with XP, for the few occasions I need the portability, and keep my existing desktop as my primary computer.
    Is this a no-brainer, or is my caution justified?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks to all who didn't get too sidetracked for your help ;-)
    I am currently typing this on my brand spanking new 2.4GB MBP*, ready to be hooked up to my twelve month old 22" CRT when I start using Lightroom with it. Yet to buy any external drives, but on the basis of what I read here, and a bit more fishing around on the web, I'm almost certainly going to go down the 3 1/2" route, using a physical cable connection.
    Now just juggling (and comments certainly appreciated):
    1)what connection? And user experience with USB2 v FW400 v FW800 (v ethernet v wireless v eSata)? USB2 drives seem considerably cheaper than FW, for real-world negligible differences. BUt haven't read, or at least recalled, any LR users comments on this
    2) what capacity for secondary backup drive if employing Time Machine? (How much capacity over the actual space you might otherwise expect to fill in 12 months)
    * After looking further into the Australian taxation system and the bids on 12 month-old second-hand MacBooks and MacBook Pros on eBay the decision to buy a Mac was pretty much made for me - I think I will be able to replace a MBP every year for small loss or even a gain for as long as the current system remains in place, and a considerable amount of the population remain ignorant of the taxation incentives to buy laptops.

  • I'm a online university student. Can I replace Windows 7 with Arch?

    Actually both my wife and I are both online students. I'm so tired of Windows 7. I want to be free from the chains of Windows. I know Wine won't run all my programs but they are getting better. I was looking into getting VMWare Workstation 8 or VirtualBox. I know there is VMWare player that is free. But I can afford to pay for VMWare workstation. I  just hope it's a fast virtual environment. I'm not a new user to Linux either. Been running it since OpenSuse 9 a long time ago. But it has been a dual boot setup. I'm ready to venture out and use Arch Linux.
    So I was wondering if anyone else here is running Arch Linux full time and also a student. Have you run into any issues? If so how did you solve it? Hopefully when I do this. I can convert some friends and family.

    @mythus,
    I was also about to say that that is outrageous. I would very much like to know the university and subject or country and subject but I understand you might not wish to say. If they really gave a zero purely because they could tell it was not done in Office 2010, that's reprehensible. The only exception I could think of would be a course on the use of specific computer software where the assignment was designed to test students skills with Office 2010 specifically. That would be an odd uni course, but...
    To the OP,
    You should find out your university's policy on support for different OSs. This is really important for online study. If you are on campus, you can always use a computer lab if you have to to get something particular done. If you are halfway around the world, that's not an option. Universities vary wildly in their support for different OSs. Some require students to have machines which meet certain standards and which are equipped with Windows. Others actively support cross-platform solutions. Others officially support Windows, sort of support Mac and do "best effort" support for Linux. I have also been on campuses where the support for non-Windows was non-existent to the point that the campus didn't actually recognise the possible existence of non-Windows machines. This was good and bad. On the negative side, none of the packs MS makes available to help Mac/Unix users connect to Windows servers were installed. None. On the positive side, all network security checked for was Windows. Plug a Mac laptop in and you had immediate access to the web, printers etc. even before you'd been issued with a computer account. Plug a Windows laptop in and it demanded a username and password.
    Psychology is likely to require the use of specific statistics packages. You would need to know which. You also need to bear in mind that the software in use in three, four or more years time won't necessarily be what's used now. Stuff can change quite quickly. Even new versions and updates can block access. So even if you don't update your software, the university may update server software in ways which make it difficult for you to access the information you need.

  • Skype 6.1 for Windows Desktop with Outlook Integra...

    Introducing Skype 6.1 for Windows, now with Outlook integration and a visual update to the toolbar. This is an exciting update because the time spent on email by many people is still significant. And if you're like many of us who work at Skype, we spend lots of time toggling between our email and Skype desktop clients. Now it's really convenient to send a Skype instant message, start a free Skype to Skype call, or make a call to any mobile or landline - all within Outlook.
    NB: The Outlook integration does not work with the Outlook 2013 preview version. You need to either use Outlook 2010 or upgrade to the final Outlook 2013 once that is available.
    More details showing the feature in use in several screenshots can be found in our Skype news blog article.
    We'd love to hear about your experience trying it out. As we also did some minor tweaks and improvements and are happy to hear your feedback about this update by posting here on the Skype Community.

  • Replacing Window Title with other value

    Hi to everyone
    Can anyone tell me how can I replace the window title with other values...for example with active record...mean client name should appear instead of window title.
    Thanks in advance

    Here is the code I use from a simple form. You can see it handles three separate environments, Client/Server, Web separate frame, and Web inside browser window.
    I like to remove the "Oracle Forms Runtime" from the main window, only in Client/Server, you cannot remove the brackets. So you are left with - [ Your Title ]Here is the code. It can be put into either the Pre-Form or When-New-Form-Instance trigger. But note that once you do this, EVERY form must set its title, or the one you set last will show up on all your subsequent forms:
        DECLARE
          WINDOW_ID        WINDOW := FIND_WINDOW('WINDOW0');
          WTitle           Varchar2(100) := 'My Test Form';
        BEGIN
          Set_Window_Property(Window_Id,Window_State,Maximize);
          If Get_Application_Property(User_Interface) = 'WEB' then
            --Web forms:  set MDI title, erase W0 title.
            Set_Window_Property(Window_Id,Title,' ');
            Set_Window_Property(Forms_MDI_Window,Title,' ' || WTitle);
            --- Check if running SeparateFrame=False (form within browser)
            If get_window_property(forms_mdi_window,title) is null then
              --SeparateFrame=False:  running inside browser window.
              --Cannot set browser title; need to set Window0 title
              Set_Window_Property(Window_Id,Title,' ' || WTitle);
            end if;
          Else -- client/server forms
            Set_Window_Property(Forms_MDI_Window,Title,' ');
            Set_Window_Property(Window_Id,Title,' '||WTitle||' ');
          End if;

  • Icloud set up help...on windows 7 with older macs in house

    Hello
    Thanks for any help...I am trying to get my photos backed up to the cloud.
    I hope I got this right
    I went to sign up and it said I needed at least a windows PC or a mac that is a later version OS
    than my 10.6.8 and 10.5.0
    does this mean i can do the initial set up on my pc and then use it on my 10.5.O mac to upload my pictures to
    the cloud...most my photos are on 10.5.0 mac mini...
    OR do i have to have a different icloud account for mac and windows?
    Thanks I am so confused as to how to save my photos before I get a new mac and time capsule...
    i lost them all before and thankfully they were backed up to a drive...
    I want to secure these photos the best way I can as so many loved ones have passed away...
    Thanks...any help would be so appreciated...I don't mind paying for extra cloud storage if i know those
    photos are safe...
    and that I can set up on windows 7 and use it on my older macs
    Rose

    iCloud doesn't backup your photos, so there'd be no point trying to use that.
    Use Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive.
    Dropbox works on OS X 10.5.8 at least, so that may be your best option.

  • Sync encountered an error while syncing only on my windows desktop not my Mac laptop

    I have a Windows 7 Ultimate desktop and a MacBook Pro (mid-2010) running OS X Lion (10.7). Firefox Sync works properly on my MacBook Pro, but I have been getting error messages on my Windows 7 Ultimate desktop that say: "Sync encountered an error while syncing: Unknown error. Sync will automatically retry this action." Both computers have the latest version of Firefox installed (5.0.1). I have tried removing the add-on, and deactivating and reactivating the device, all on both machines. All to no avail. The only thing I can think of that I haven't yet tried is to setup a whole new Sync account, but I do not think I should have to go to that extreme. Any help is appreciated.

    If you have tried everything, you should, first open a bug with the log of your server error (so the team can fix it) and then replace the info in the server. It's probably corrupted:

    ==========
    I tried to go into display settings and disable the Intel card. (this caused low resolution which is unexceptable)
    ==========
    This makes me think it's using that graphics "card" ( probably built into mobo ? ...called 'onboard graphics ? )
    This stuff gets tricky and sometimes the only way to make windows 'recognize' the pci graphics card is to actually take it out and boot, and then put it back in...
    Then you get mssg " windows detected new hardware" and you install the drivers...
    usually bios gives you choice of using onboard graphics or not ( but this too is wanky sometimes...sorry to say ...)
    I recently ( this past year ) had a similar sort of situation but have a desktop, where its easy for me to take off side panel and pull the pci-e graphics card and boot, and get that horrible low res default screen...turn off, install card, reboot etc...
    but anyway, it sounds to me like you're notebook is using that mobile graphics driver stuff and not the radeon. Somehow you've got to make it switch to that graphics card is maybe your solution.
    sorry I dont have notebook but maybe someone else here does and can help more...
    good luck.
    ps..its always a weird fact of life...when things aren't working 'right' something has to get done fast....
    edit:
    I dont know how much you know about windows stuff, but after you disable that intel thing and get your low res screen.. you DID try to update the driver for that card using 'my computer / device manager  '   right ??
