Replacing WLC 4404 with 5508

Hi Friends,
I am new to Cisco wireless and would appreicate any help with replacing WLC 4404 with 5508. I mean any link or doc (best practices).

Yup, what said Scoot said .. Add the 5508 to the aps high availability. If you have WCS/NCS you can push this to the APs.

    Wireless users getting disabled
    Hi,
I have WLC 4404 with 7.0.116.0 version. I was getting following messages for particular APs
*Dec 20 14:11:13.875: %LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface Dot11Radio0, changed state to reset
*Dec 20 14:11:13.908: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Dot11Radio0, changed state to up

After seeing one of the cisco forum, I have disabled RLDP for that particular APs
    so above messages are rectified.
But right now we are not able to identify Rogue IP and it is not contained.
So please give any suggetion so that i can rectify the above messages as well as i can identify the rogue IP.
    Thanks & Regards
    Gaurav Pandya

    Hi Scott,
You are right i am not able to detect rogue APs because i disabled the RLDP. but when i enable the RLDP for that particular AP. i got the following messages with interface go up and down
*Dec 20 14:11:13.875: %LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface Dot11Radio0, changed state to reset
*Dec 20 14:11:13.908: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Dot11Radio0, changed state to up

    *Dec 20 14:11:29.700: %LWAPP-5-RLDP: RLDP started on slot 0.
So please suggest me the mid way so that i can enable the RLDP (Detect the rogue APs) with out interface going up and down frequently.

  • Wireless clients load balancing on the APs on WLC 4404

    Hi Experts,
I'm just wondering if the WLC 4404 with firmware 4.2.207.0 can load balance the wireless clients on different WAPs. Let's say that an AP is already handling 15 Wireless devices. When the 16th is trying to join, the controller somehow puts it on another nearby AP, even the signal from this AP is weaker. I heard the similar feature on other Wireless solution vendors. I'm just wondering if Cisco has the similar feature or not.
    Thanks!

Yes it is known as aggressive load balancing sending a code 17 making the wireless client to loook at another nearby AP.
    here it is the documentation:

  • WLC integration with LDAP to authenticate domain users without Radius

    Dear All,
I have a WLC 4404 with LWAPs, the customer has a microsoft LDAP and all users are joined to the domain and he wants the users to be authenticated against their domain accounts and this should be done automatically so that when users login to windows they are also authenticated and joined the WLAN.
so how we can do that with the simplest way, without Radius server using only the LDAP and wwithout envolving any certificates.
also i need to know when i add LDAP server to the WLC, how can i know that this LDAP is properly inegrated with the WLC ?
    thanks and BR

    Hi,
I have followed the following document to make users authenticate against their AD domain accounts:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6366/products_configuration_example09186a008093f1b9.shtml
the device and the root of PKI certificates for the WLC were generated and installed successfully on the WLC, and now we are in the client (end user) part starting from the section "Generating a device certificate for the client" page 17, which as per the document to be done from the client PC using the client domain account, which consequently means this process is to be repeated for each end user separately, so my question is there any way to generate some sort of general certificate for all clients to be pushed through group policy to all client instead of making it PC by PC ?

  • WLC mobility group between 4404 and 5508 controllers

Mobility 'Control and Data Path Down' between 4404 and 5508 WLC's.
Hello, we have 5 x 4404 WLC's running 7.0.240.0 with mobility configured fine between them.
We have installed a 5508 with HA running 7.4.110.0, and have tried to add it to the mobility group, however we see 'Control and Data Path Down' between the new 5508 and all the 4404 controllers.
    All controllers have:
    The same virtual address
Management interfaces are in the same VLAN, and indeed all the controllers connect via the same pair of 3750X stacked switches.
The default mobility domain name is the same

Has anybody seen this problem before?
    Kind regards

    Thanks Sandeep.
I am well versed with WLC's and mobility, however trying to add a 5508 to a mobility group with 4404's has come up with a bit of a curve ball.
All the 4404 controllers all joined the mobility group fine, no problems at all - its only the 5508 I am struggling with.
In theory its simple, populate the IP address, and MAC addres of the management interface of the remote WLC, as long as the management interfaces are in the same VLAN, and the Default Mobility Domain Name are the same it should come up.
Interestingly I have found the 5508 reports its own management interface MAC address incorrectly when viewing the Mobility Groups:
    For example:
    {Screen shot WLC1.jpg}
5508 management address is 10.95.x.x and when viewing the Mobility Management screen it shows its own MAC address as bc:16:65:f9:37:60.
    however!
From our router is I do an sh arp | i 10.95.x.x (controller management address), I see:f872.eaee.becf.
    {Screen shot wlc2.jpg}
Hence the WLC reports as: bc:16:65:f9:37:60
    and
The network reports as: f872.eaee.becf for the same IP address.
I have changed the other WLC's to the MAC adress seen on the network for the new controller, aka changed from
    bc:16:65:f9:37:60
    to
    f8:72:ea:ee:be:cf
I now see the controllers reporting the mobility with the new controller as 'Control Path Down', however I am at a loss as to what may be causing this?
    Kind regards

  • WLC 4404-100 with CAP1550E

Currently I have a WLC 4404-100 and 96 nos. LWAP 1250 installed at site. I need to add CAP1550E (4 Nos.) to this existing setup. Out of this CAP1550E, 2 needs to be configured as root, and the remaining 2 has to be connected through 802.11a/n backhaul and meshed.
Can I achieve this scenario, without adding a new controller??
    Thanks to all in advance.....

    jerrick,
Yes you can. Mesh and non-mesh functionality has been merged for quite some time now. Use more recent code (7.0.x) or higher for best results.
If you are unfamiliar with configuring mesh, consider spending some time scanning the 7.2 mesh design guide. Mesh works a little bit differently than your traditional local-mode APs and you need to do some additional configuration on the controller to tune it to your environment.
    7.2 Mesh Design Guide: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/technology/mesh/7.2/design/guide/MeshAP_72.html
One thing the guide doesn’t say (I don’t think): Get it working on the ground first, then hang your APs. It will save you a lot of time and frustration.

  • Is 1252G AP compatible with 5508 WLC

    hi,
I want to know whether 1252G AP can register with 5508 WLC? from the datasheet 5505 support CAPWAP while 1252 is LWAP. Kindly provide the link regarding the compatibility as well.
    Regards
    Nareh

    hi,
I would also to add that I will be using CAP 1552E (802.11N) outdoor AP with the 1252G AP. Is it possible that both LWAP and CAPWAP AP registers with the same 5508 WLC ?

  • LDAP issues with 5508 WLC

I have deployed two wlans with two LDAP servers and different OU configurantion in each LDAP.

wlan id 1 is set to LDAP server1
wlan id 4 is set to LDAP server2

user server1 connect to wlan4    - this should not happen
    user server2 connect to wlan4
user server2 connect to wlan1     - this should not happen

  • Replace WLC Mobility Group Anchor

We have 2 5508 and 1 4402 WLCs and all belong to the same mobility group. The 4402 does not have any access points and does nothing more than serve as a mobility anchor for our public wireless SSID. We are planning to replace the 4402 with a new 2504 unit which will have the same configuration including IP as the 4402. Is there anything I need to do with the mobility groups when we remove the 4402?
    Thanks for any help.
    Jeff

you'll need to add the MAC of the 2504 to the mobility group, and remove the entry for the 4402.
Out of Curiosity...how many concurrent guest users to you have usually?

  • I have a Problem with Romming Between SSIDs withing the same WLC but with deferent VLAN .

    HI All,
I have a Problem with Romming Between SSIDs withing the same WLC but with deferent VLAN . the WLC are providing the HQ and one of the Branches the Wireless services .
Am using all the available 9 SSIDs at the HQ , and am using only 4 of it at the Brnche.
The problem that i have are happening only at the Branch office as i cant room between the SSIDs within Diferent VLANs but i can do it with the one that pointing to the same VLAN. Once the client ( Laptop/Phone ) connected to one of the SSIDs. it imposiible to have him connected to the other ones with Different VLAN. meanwhile, It says its connected to the other SSID but its not getting IP from that pool.
here is the Show Run-Config from my WLC .. and the Problem happening between the SSID AMOBILE and ASTAFF. i have the Debug while am switching between the SSIDs if needed .

Well you need to understand the behavior of h-reap or what it's called now, FlexConnect. In this mode, the clients are still remembers on the WLC until the session timer/idle timer expires. So switching between SSID's in h-reap will not be the same when switching when the AP's are in local mode.
Take a look at the client when connected in FlexConnect in the WLC GUI monitor tab. Thus will show you what ssid and vlan the client is on. Now switch to a different ssid and compare this. It's probably the same because the client has not timed out. Now go back to the other ssid and look again. Now on the WLC, remove or delete the client and then switch to the other ssid at the same time. Or switch SSID's and then remove the client. The client will join the new ssid and in the monitor tab, you should see the info.
There is no need to have clients have multiple SSID's unless your testing. Devices should only have one ssid profile configured to eliminate any connectivity issues from the device wanting to switch SSID's.

  • What settings need to be set for the fastest roaming on my wlc 4404

    Hi all
I notice that on my WLC 4404 when walking around with my laptop, I am dropping pings when it roams to another access point, Is there anything on the controller I need to check, and can I optimize these settings for roaming?
    cheers
    carl

    Hello Carl,
to have romaing working fine you need to be sure of following:
    1) RF designed correctly , and enough overlapping is availble between the AP's.
in addition for environment to be free from external noise..
this can be confirmed with spectrum expert site survey
    2) what authentication and encryption used ( WEP , or WPA-PSK no need to check this point ->> skip :-) )
if you are using any authentication like 802.1x ->> then enable CCKM on the WLAN to make more seamless roaming.
    3) if more than one WLC availble on site , configure mobility group between them,
so if client roam from one AP in WLC 1 to AP on WLC 2 ->> no disocnnection observed....
    Kind regards
    Talal

  • WLC 5500 with multiple APs

We have a WLC 5500 apliance, but i have a problem, the APs have a administrative IP in a diferent segment, only conected to WLC the AP have same segment of the management interface, the 5500 don´t have APmanager interface.
How configurate the WLC to conected and administrate all AP with different segment IP
    Product Version.................................. 6.0.182.0
    chasis:        AIR-CT5508-K9

You may check this article about the discovery process:
    http://tiny.cc/lqu1zw
Now, with what Steve above is trying to say is that with 5508 the management interface itself is the AP manager interface (by default). so, management and ap-manager interfaces are merged into one interface with same IP address. You can change this behavior but this is the default.
The article will tell you what mechanisms can be used to direct the APs to join the WLC even if they are on different subnet.

  • WLC 4404 error message

    Dears,
we have a wireless lan controller 4404 with LDAP authentication ...
first, we are getting this error message on the WLC:
apfMsConnTask_0: Jul 02 13:27:34.180: %APF-3-CHECK_SUPP_RATES_FAILED: apf_utils.c:291 Could not check supported rates. Missing Supported Rate. Length :0. Mobile MAC: 78:e4:00:07:dd:10.
second, our issue is when you open a browser, and after you enter the credentials for the username and password, it keeps redirecting to the virtual IP server "1.1.1.1" and never responds with the requested page or the "authentication succeeded" popup. however, when you open a new tab on the same browser, it connects you to the internet...
please advise any recommended procedures or solutions that can be done to solve this issue.
    thanks in advance ...
    regards,
    Majed

    hi Scott,
    thanks for the reply...
that means its ok that the client keeps redirecting on the VIP set on the WLC, if its the function of the vip as you have said ?
and regarding the error message, it is the same client that is connecting to the webauth !!
please provide me with any ideas to solve this issue if anything came up to your mind
may updating the browser or using another solve this, and will upgrading the WLC to newer version lead us to not seeing this message and get rid of this issue ??
    regards,
    majed

  • Decrypt Errors - WLC 4404

    Hello,
We recently had a few clients being locked down with countermeasures by our WLC 4404 due to TKIP-MIC errors. After doing some reading on the benefits of AES over TKIP I switched our WLAN security settings to AES, and pushed a new wireless policy to our client machines. Every thing appeared to work well, except now the trap log on the 4404 is showing a LOT of WPA decrypt errors. I've checked a few of the clients that appear to have problems, but they've got the right policy and WPA settings to match what is on the WLC.
It's not one particular NIC, it's various clients.
Any thoughts on how I might clear these up?
    Rob

One reason for that is configuration of two WEP keys on a single WLAN is not supported. Currently WLAN can only take one WEP key.

  • Wlc 4404 upgrade

Hi, looking for advice on which code to upgrade to. We have a wlc 4404 using mostly AIR-AP1231G-A-K9 access points. The current code is 4.2.130.0. We would like to use some of the 1141 APs and I understand they need at least 5.2. My plan would be to go to 6. I believe I need to go to 4.2.176.0 first and then to 6. The question would be what version of 6 would be the best?  Right now 6.0.182.0 (ED), 6.0.188.0 (ED), and 6.0.196.0 (ED) are available.

Well that is a tricky question and really depends on a lot of variables.  We have installs with all three versions of the software.  Currently I would have to say that 6.0.188.0 is one to try.  We have upgraded some clients to 6.0.196.0 because of issue with the 6.0.188..0, but again, it all depends what equipment you have and if you see any issues with the 6.0.188.0.  Some people I know have just went right to the 6.0.196.0 code and have not seen any issues.  The 6.x is still pretty new in my book, but like you already did..... review the caveats on the different versions and if you have a spare WLC,do some testing.
