Replicating windows trackpad gesture in OS-X - drag to edge

While the Mac Trackpad is superior in almost every way, there is one missing feature I loved on my Dell Laptop (Windows 7).  It is hard to describe, and thus, hard to search for info on. Basically, on my windows touchpad, I can tap and drag an object (one and a half taps, hold, and drag to move (eg) a window). Identical between Mac and Windows at this point. But - when I drag on my WIndows touchpad, and reach the edge of the physical touchpad, the movement continues indefinitely until I 'back off' from the edge.  I think it might be called continuous scroll.  This is useful when you need to move the cursor on the screen further than the physical 'travel' of the trackpad allows.
On the Mac touchpad, I've tried turning on 'Drag Lock' in accessibility, and this helps in the one situation where you 'run out of room' to scroll, but introduces the need to always 'single tap' to end the action, which means an extra step for 90% of trackpad activities. I've also got 'with inertia' selected, but that doesn't help.
The most crititcal need for this feature, for me, is when trying to draw an exact selection box around an object when doing graphical work. You start your selection at the top left, then carefully drag to the lower right, but - if you run out of room on the trackpad you have to let go and start again. On my Windows Laptop, I start my selection top left, then drag to lower right, and if I run out of room, the selection just keeps growing until I back off from the edge slightly.
Any ideas? Thanks!

If an Apple engineer has read this, it appears they aren't willing to share their knowledge. Be that as it may, this is what I've discovered so far:
The Snow Leopard link keys can be found in /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/blued.plist. This file can be opened with a Pist editor. In my case, it contains a couple of entries (couplings) for my only Bluetooth device, i.e., the Magic Trackpad, whose MAC address is paired with a couple of entries, which I supposed are MAC "identities" of my Bluetooth USB receiver. The Plist editor shows one 16-bit hex key for each pairing.
Now, in theory, these keys should be copied to the relevant Windows registry entries in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BTHPORT\Parameter s\Keys\
(these entries MUST be accessed running psexec -s -i regedit.exe).
There are two main entries under ...\Parameters\Keys, each coinciding with what I presume are the two (?) MAC addresses of the Bluetooth dongle. Under each of these entries there's a REG_BINARY key whose name is the MAC address of the Magic Trackpad and whose value (the Bluetooth link key both devices share to communicate) SHOULD be made the same as in blued.plist.
Unfortunately, the operation doesn't work. Now my Windows registry contains the same link keys as my blued.plist, but the Magic Trackpad doesn't do anything in Windows (and I don't want to pair it again, or I would be forced to do the reverse operation in blued.plist.
I must be missing something. Are the link keys in blued.plist to be interpreted as big-endian, so that bits should be swapped in the Windows registry? Any advice will be most welcome.

  • Trackpad gestures to double-click/drag to select whole words?

Using a mouse in a TextEdit document, I can double-click a word to select it at once. Double-click/drag alters the selection word-at-a-time. Similarly, triple- and quadruple- clicks might have other handy functions.
What trackpad gestures allow me to do the same word-at-a-time selection?

D'oh! There are mouse buttons in the lower left and right corners of the Magic Pad! So to word-at-a-time select (with the right hand), use the thumb to click-then-hold the lower left mouse button, and the index finger to adjust the selection.

  • Trackpad gesture spaces switch turns screen gray

After upgrading my AirBook to Mountain Lion, I frequently have an issue where a single finger trackpad gesture to the left or right edge of my screen causes my entire screen to turn gray.  The only way I've found to get my screen (and spaces) back is to use a keyboard shortcut to go to a different space than the one I had been in;  a keyboard shortcut to activate the space I had been in does nothing.
I have an upgraded ML installations on an iMac and a MacBook that do not exhibit this behavior.
Has anyone encountered this and found a fix?
    TIA

I found now BetterTouchTool where I can set up nearly everything as gestures on mouse, trackpad, keyboard, and and and.
A absolute mighty multi setting tool, very cool.
I just configured my old and beloved gestures in:
Gestures / Trackpads / Global / Four Finger Swype Right / Predefined Action: Application Switcher
    I activated as well:
Action Settings (Window Snapping etc.) / Settings for predefined actions / Use special application switcher
Which is even more comfortable as the former origin gesture was.
    I used "Advanced" Settings.
So now I won't be sad for the missing of this former useful gesture anymore, if this great app won't crash or be suddenly not free anymore etc.
Strange, that Yosemite just skipped this great gesture but never mind, other things are great therefore.

  • How to use trackpad gestures with Windows 8 Developer Preview?

I have installed a Windows 8 Developer Preview on my MacBook via BootCamp Assistant. I found that it isn't support the trackpad gestures! (ex: two-fingers tap to right-click)
So how can I use the trackpad gestures with Windows 8?
    Thank you for all reply.

The BootCamp drivers that you can download and burn to a disc via the Boot Camp application in Mac OS can be installed in Windows 8 (run setup.exe from the disc while in Windows 8, preferably by right-clicking and choosing "Run as Administrator") and will allow you to use all of the current features of the touchpad (including two finger clicking/tapping).  Once you have installed the drivers as described above, you can then click on the arrow in the System Tray and right-click on the black triangle that is for the BootCamp control panel. In those settings you can change how the touchpad responds to your taps, clicks, etc.

  • How to enble trackpad gestures during a remote dekstop session to windows server 2012

Hello, do you know a trick to enable trackpad gesture as, swype, double touch and so on duringa remote   dekstop connection to windows server 2012? because it only recognise the physical mous click,ù and it really annoying.
    thank for help

    Hi,
Add to Brain, you cannot have more than 15 user accounts in Windows Server 2012 Foundation.
In order to access a hosted application, such as Microsoft® Office, a license for Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services is required for each user account (not to exceed 15 user
accounts) that directly or indirectly uses RD Gateway to host a graphical user interface, including using Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) client. When using Remote Desktop Services, you may not install or use Remote Desktop Connection Broker or Remote
Desktop Virtualization Host role services. For more information about Remote Desktop CALs , see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=140238.

  • Bug when using four finger trackpad gesture to switch between apps?

When I use the four figure trackpad gesture to toggle between apps, once I select the app it is shown the app is selected in the menu bar, but it doesn't open minimized windows. Maybe this how it is supposed to operate, but if I have a minimized window, I want the "app toggler" to restore it. The point of me using the "app toggler" is to avoid me having to go to the dock.

    Glad to help.

  • Simultaneous trackpad gestures gone in Lion

I used to be able to perform trackpad gestures at the same time as clicking down on the trackpad. This has gone in Lion; now when you click, no gestures can be performed at the same time. Can this be turned back on?
Examples of where I used to use it (and I did it a LOT):
    • Click down on a file, then with my other hand I'd do a 4 finger swipe up to show the desktop. This is an easy way to drag files to folder on the desktop/pen drives etc.. without having to do it in finder.
    • Same as above, but with a 4 finger swipe down to being up Expose. When dragging files in/out/to/from different applications, it's nice to be able to do this all from the trackpad.
I know for the second one I can just press F3 to bring up mission control, and there's probably an easy solution for the desktop as well, but it just seems weird that since upgrading to the new OS, I actually lose functionality from the trackpad.

I was having the same problem, I found a fix by changing the preferences to without inertia and after a reboot it fixed the problem, I can now scroll with inertia.  Looks like a .plist got jumbled.

  • Mission Control trackpad gesture not working as before in Mavericks

    Hi there,
I noticed the three fingers gesture to launch Mission Control has changed in Mavericks. Now you need to stop touching the trackpad when doing the swipe up and down. I mean, you need to swipe up, STOP touching the trackpad, and then swipe down in order to activate and deactivate MC.
It may sound as a triviality but really bothers me a lot. I use that gesture pretty much to see every window opened and I hate to lose a second performing it.
Do you guys know if there is a way to change it back? I already tried to deactivate Exposé but got nothing different.
    Thanks,
    Best regards.

    as said above

usually in such instances resetting mission control gestures in Sys. preferences resolves it
uncheck and recheck your trackpad gestures and re-verify.
then restart mac, this fixed my error....hope it works

  • Issues with Finder tabs feature + trackpad gestures

    Hello,
Recently installed Yosemite 10.10.1 (clean install + migration of backup data and apps). Like Yosemite design but...
Just after the install, things I am talking about below, were working well but since the very first turn-off and start, things have been going worse and worse, especially with Finder.
1st issue. Opening tabs in Finder (cmd + click on folder from the sidebar) works in a bizarre way:  when I open a folder such as Documents in a tab > OK but.... when I open the folder Utilities (part of the Applications one) from the Finder sidebar, the former open tabs as well as the left sidebar of the Finder vanish and just get a unique Finder window (without the left sidebar) with the Utilities folder. This unexpected and undesired behavior happens in both full screen or regular modes.
2nd issue. When scoping into a folder which consists of multiple sub-folders, the "back-and-forth" navigation to the previous or next folder (similar to previous or next page) does not work with the usual Trackpad gestures (swipe with 2 or 3 fingers) while it was working super well just after the install.
Hope these undesired behaviors of Finder have been already identified as bugs and will be fixed very soon. Should any of you have an idea about that, welcome.
    Thank you!

Self reply. Just found workaround and solution:
1st issue: step 1 > activated "Quit Finder" in Finder menu bar (thanks to Onyx), step 2 > quit Finder, step 3 > restart Finder and... step 4 > all folders open properly in tabs.
However, also noticed that the width of the Finder sidebar seems to be preserved as a preference, only as from a certain width. Below this limit, seems that the manual settings of the sidebar width are lost and next time the folder is open it comes with a shrunk sidebar (Yosemite bug or normal behavior? Cannot recall such a behavior in Mavericks).
2nd issue: back-and-forth navigation in Finder pages (within a same window or tab) works well with trackpad swipe gesture at the condition the Trackpad System Preference "swiping through pages" is set up with option "3 fingers" or "2 or 3 fingers". Option "2 fingers only" does not work in Finder.
    My 2 cents!

  • Trackpad gestures disappears after waking

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, upon waking from sleep, my Trackpad's gestures, (ie. swiping spaces by dragging 3 fingers across trackpad), disappears.  No trackpad gestures work, (ie pinch to zoom, etc.)
After some time, Mountain Lion appears to sleep without reason momentarily, (less than a second) and gestures then return.
Or a restart will restore gestures.

You can start by creating a new user in system preferences>users and groups.
sign into a new user and you are virtually on a clean installation of ML. See if your issue happends in this setting.
You may need to perform a PRAM reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
if that doesn't fix it, and a new user does not show the issue, then it is certainly a third party app conflicting with the OS.
if it still happens in a new user, you may need to reinstall ML from the recovery partition>
To get to the recovery partition restart your computer,  hold CMD+R down when you hear the boot up chime. Open Disk Utility first (verify your boot disk and repair if needed) and then close it and reinstall ML.

  • Trackpad Gestures deactivate after Macbook Pro shut down.

In order to reactivate the trackpad gestures after a shut down, I simply need to launch the Better Touch Tool application. Is there a way to permanently activated the gestures, regardless of shut down?
    Many thanks!

    Hello mrdp88,
Thank you for the question.  Have you tried adding Better Touch Tool to your Login Items?  Applications in your list of Login Items will launch after you restart your computer.
Use these steps to add Better Touch Tool to your Login Items:
    Add or remove automatic items
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Select your user account, then click Login Items.
    Do one of the following:
Click Add ( + ) below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)
Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click Delete ( - ) below the list on the right.

  • No Trackpad Gestures, quitting flash player, and ticking harddrive

    1. Just recently my trackpad gestures have stopped working in Safari. All I get is the 2 finger scroll. The 3 finger page forward/page back doesn't work, and neither does the pinch.
    2. My Adobe flash player quits all the time when I'm watching movies.
    3. And my hard drive has recently started making the "Thinking" noise. It has always been silent before.
Any thoughts? I appreciate all help!

It says my disk is fine. I noticed that it would always make that noise while using windows in bootcamp, but never OSX. Now it does it sometimes. Maybe it has some fragmented files that is causing the HD arm to search all over? Who knows. Whats bothering me the most is my trackpad gestures all of a sudden not working. I have snow leopard but the gestures still worked. So I have no clue what caused this change.

  • Thunderbolt and trackpad gestures

Will thunderbolt devices work in Windows 7 through boot camp?  And do trackpad gestures (2 finger swiping, etc) work in windows 7?
    Thanks!

I don't think anyone can know yet how and when Thunderbolt support will come and under what constraints it will operate under when run on bootcamp. Thunderbolt as a technology hasn't even generally been released by Intel yet, and until development occurs across a fairly wide spectrum of developers you won't see a lot of compatibility.

  • Does Boot Camp 5 not support Windows 8 Gestures?

I just did a fresh install of Windows 8 on a late 2011 MacBook pro. Does this updated version of Boot Camp not support the trackpad gestures?
I've spent a lot of time on Google but everything that I am finding is from 2012 with references to people trying to get Windows 8 working in Boot Camp 4.
    Thanks!

Thank you for the clear and concise answer mende1.
That is great that someone has created 3rd party drivers but that won't be a solution in my environment. I support several Macs in a very large corporate environment and we were wanting to run Windows 8 with full official support from Apple on these devices.
The way I see it, Boot Camp 5 does not officially support Windows 8 until they support this basic functionality. I cannot provide support in this environment to a 3rd party driver solution. I'll be sure to provide feedback to Apple.
    Thanks again!
