Replication from SQL Anywhere to Microsoft SQL Server

SQL Anywhere Community,
I have a customer who wants to replicated their Replication from SQL Anywhere to Microsoft SQL Server Data Warehouse.  Are there any whitepapers on this or qualified consultants that could deliver?

Joseph Shaffner | Vice President, SAP Solutions | Bradmark Technologies, Inc.

Hi Joseph,
I can help with the "whitepaper" aspect of this question. All of the information for synchronizing with MobiLink can be found in the official SQL Anywhere documentation: http://dcx.sap.com/
We have tutorials for SQL Anywhere, Adaptive Server Enterprise, and Oracle available in the documentation. However, the tutorials can be easily adapted to work with Microsoft SQL Server.
I can also provide some further technical information about synchronizing to Microsoft SQL Server:
The general tutorial for working with MobiLink in Sybase Central and with a MobiLink Synchronization Model is here:
http://dcx.sap.com/index.html#sa160/en/mlstart/sqlatut.html
Initially, you may want to follow it "as-is" (which uses a SQL Anywhere consolidated database) in order to get a better understanding of the MobiLink product. You can then move on to using a Microsoft SQL Server consolidated database afterwards.
Changing the tutorial to work with a different consolidated database is mostly related to creating an ODBC DSN that targets a Microsoft SQL Server instance. You would pick that DSN when defining a consolidated database in your MobiLink synchronization model. The rest of the instructions regarding creating scripts and models is the same, but using Microsoft SQL Server SQL syntax (T-SQL) instead of SQL Anywhere syntax inside the synchronization scripts.
You will need to install the MobiLink system tables for Microsoft SQL Server. The script to do this can be found at: %SQLANY16%\MobiLink\setup\syncmss.sql. If you are using Sybase Central to create a Synchronization Model though, once you connect to Microsoft SQL Server, you will be prompted to install the MobiLink system tables automatically (i.e. run the script).
There are some Microsoft SQL Server specific issues that you will want to be aware of:
http://dcx.sap.com/index.html#sa160/en/mlserver/ml-basics-mss-5159304.html
I have contacted some people internally here at SAP about consulting engagements to see if they can assist. If you are already working with an SAP Sales representative, it would probably be best to inquire with them directly and look into your available options.

Jeff Albion

  • Transactional replication from SQL Server 2014 to Sybase 12.5

    Hi All,
Is it possible to set up replication between SQL Server 2014 and Sybase 12.5 in which SQL server would be the publisher and Sybase as  subscriber.
    Regards..
    aa

    Hi Ashif,
    According to this
blog, it is possible to set up transactional replication from SQL Server to Sybase.
To achieve this, you could set up transactional replication via the Sybase OLE DB driver after you set up Sybase as a
    linked Server.
For how to set up transactional replication, please refer to the article:

  • Sql server replication from SQL SERVER VERSION(7.0) to SQL SERVER 2005

    Hi All,
We are trying to create a replication between Sql server 7.0 data to SQL server 2005 data . We tried to create a local subscription in Sql server ,when tried to connect to publisher  running in Sql server 7.0 it is showing an error message
like "This Sql server vresion(7.0) is not supported" .
Could any one please help us with this issue ?
    Thanks
    Sandy

    Hi CRM_Learner,
SQL Server version 7.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4) is the earliest version that can participate in a replication topology with SQL Server 2005. We need to verify the version of SQL Server. If you configure transactional replication with updating subscribers,
for a SQL Server 7.0 Publisher, only SQL Server 7.0 Subscribers are supported. SQL Server 7.0, 2000 was out of support in the SQL Server Forums. I suggest you install SQL Server 2005 or later version to configure the SQL Server replication.
For more information, there is a detail about using multiple Versions of SQL Server in a replication topology.

  • Removing Replication in SQL Server 2008 R2

    Hi,
I had issues to remove replication. I was trying to remove all articles from replication..it was taking quite long time to complete the process and found blocking while doing it. I stopped the SQL agent and tried but still it was slow..to remove 3 tables
from replication it took more than 30mi. Is there any other preriquisites to do for this process. I searched a lot in the web but didn't get proper help.
    Thanks.

    Hi Swapana,
According to your description, you want remove all articles from transactional replication, however, it exists some blocks which make the removing process slowly. Usually, articles can be dropped from a publication at any time.  Replication will stop
replicating the changes in schema/data from publisher to subscriber once you remove article from replication . However, we need to verify if you want to remove tables from the subscriber database, if yes, you have to do it manually after removing object from
    replication. For more information, see:
    http://blog.extreme-advice.com/2012/11/28/delete-article-from-transactional-replication-in-sql-server-2012/
In addition, if you just want to drop articles from existing publications. For snapshot or transactional publications, articles can be dropped with no special considerations prior to subscriptions being created. When you drop an article that is related to
other published articles through foreign key constraints, we recommend that you drop the table at the Subscriber manually.
If an article is dropped after one or more subscriptions is created, the subscriptions must be dropped, recreated, and synchronized. For more information, see:

    Hi,
“All but one database are upgradable. However, one database gives:
    Invalid object name 'Webs'.”
Did the sentence you mean only one database not upgrade to SharePoint 2013 and given the error?
One or more of the following might be the cause:
    Insufficient SQL Server database permissions
    SQL Server database is full
    Incorrect MDAC version
    SQL Server database not found
    Incorrect version of SQL Server
SQL Server collation is not supported
    Database is read-only
To resolve the issue, you can refer to the following article which contains the causes and resolutions.

I get the following error message while doing so..
String or binary data would be truncated.
    The statement has been terminated.
One of the column's holds data more than 225 characters.
What is the way to correct this, i want the whole data of the colum in the excel sheet.

I haven't had great luck with the INSERT INTO OPENROWSET method.  Can you try one of the many samples from one of these 3 links?

  • Migration from SQL Server 2000 to Oracle8I

Would somebody please suggest me the best way for migrating a 50Gb Database from SQL Server to Oracle8i. We are willing any third party products

    Bhas,
The Oracle Migration Workbench creates scripts using Microsofts bcp to export the data from Sqlserver and Oracle sqlldr to import the data into Oracle. You can use these tools but the Oracle Migration Workbench plugin for SQL Server 2000 is not available or even in development (yet).

  • Loading data from SQL server 2000 to Oracle using OWB 10.2

    Hi All,
I have to move data from SQL server to Oracle using OWB. Any idea how to connect to SQL Server thru the OWB design centre console. There is no detail available in the documentation. OWB cocumentation says that "OWB Integrator for Oracle DB & Apps 3.0" is available to connect to Non-Oracle Database (including Sybase, Informix, ODBC).

    Hi,
yes, you can use ODBC and configure HSODBC on the database server to create a database link to the sql-server. If your oracle server is microsoft based you are ready, otherwise you have to buy an odbc-driver for linux, unix or whatever you use.

  • Migration from sql-server 7.0 to oracle 8i

    Hai,
I have one huge database in sql-server 7.0.
That database has chienese, arabic and korean data. And i have created one database in oracle 8.1.6 with character set UTF8.
By using migration work bench i couldn't transfer sql-server data into oracle 8.1.6 database which has character set utf8.
But i have managed to transfer sql-server 7.0 to oracle 8.1.6 database which has us7ascii character set.
Please give me the steps to transfer from sql-server 7.0 to oracle 8.1.6 database which has the character set utf8.
I need it very very urgetnt.

I understand that it would not be in the best interests of Oracle, monetarily that is (at least in the visible/tangible sense), to develop such a migration tool, but since the competition hasn't, why shouldn't you? I'm sure Prabha's not the first to inquire of such a thing, and I'm sure I'd have asked a similar question if I wasn't responding to you in this way. We all know Oracle is the better db - That's why we're here talking about it - but not everyone we do business with understands that, so establishing a two way street is the best way, short of requiring it of our clients, to turn them on to Oracle. I don't really think developing such a thing would hurt your business (unless MS can keep you from doing it). If your product is that much better (which we agree is true), you shouldn't be afraid of the competition. As for being afraid of proprietary constraints, I can't blame you, because I don't know how much it constrains you.

  • Migrating a table from SQL server 2005 to oracle 9i

    Hi
I need to migrate a table from SQL server to oracle, both of which are on different machines, I tried using SQL server DTS export functionality selected the Oracle driver, created a DSN, but it gave error message box as shown below
Error Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers
"ORA 12560 :TNS protocol adapter error"
Context:Error During initialization of the provider
While i was successfully able to migrate the table from SQL SERVER to MS-ACCESS and from MS ACCESS to Oracle
    thanks

    Hi
thanks warren, i just figured out that the DSN i had created while migrating data from Access to oracle was User DSN, i just created a system DSN of the similar kind and was successfully able to export the data from SQL server to oracle, the only problem being the column names in SQL server are longer than the limit of 30 characters we have in ORACLE..

  • Upgrading from SQL Server 2012 Standard to SQL Server 2014 Standard Failover Cluster

Goal: To upgrade my default instance from SQL Server 2012 to SQL Server 2014 in a failover cluster.
    Given:
    1) Operating System Windows 2012 R2
    2) 2 Virtual Machines in a cluster with SQL Server as a Guest Cluster resource.  The two VMS are called APPS08 and APPS09.  They are our development environment that is setup similar to our production environment.
Problem:  When running the SQL Server 2014 upgrade, I started on the VM that was not running the instance.  I then moved onto upgrading on the node that was running the instance.  As soon as the install attempt to failover the running instance
an install error occurred that it could not failover.  After many install attempts I consistently received the error
The SQL Server Failover cluster instance name 'Dev01'
already exists as a cluster resource.  Opening Failover cluster manager there is no record of a DEV01.
New Strategy:  Create a SQLCluster called DEV07.  At the end of the Install I get 'Resource for instance 'MSSQLSERVER' should not exists.  Neither I nor my Windows 2012 guy understand what Resource the install may be referring to.
We do not see anything out of the ordinary.
Any suggestions as to what Resource may be seeing the default instance would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi PSCSQLDBA,
As your description, you want to upgrade the default instance in SQL Server cluster.
    >> 'SQL Server failover cluster instance name 'Dev01' already exists as cluster resource'
This error could occur when there is a previously used instance name which may not be removed completely.
To work around the issue, please use one of the ways below.
    1. At command prompt, type Cluster res. This command will list you all the resources including orphan resources. To delete the orphan resource, type Cluster res <resource name>/delete.
For more information about the process, please refer to the article:
    http://gemanjyothisqlserver.blogspot.in/2012/12/sql-2008r22012-cluster-installation.html
    2. Delete DNS entries, and force a replication of DNS to the other DNS servers.
For more information about the process, please refer to the article:
    http://jon.netdork.net/2011/06/07/failed-cluster-install-and-name-already-exists/#solution
    >> 'Resource for instance 'MSSQLSERVER' should not exist'
This error could occur when you already have MSSQLSERVER as a resource in the cluster, which may not be removed completely. To work around the issue, you could rebuild the SQL Server cluster node.

    1) Should I download the 2012 version from licensing center and pass the downloaded copy to respective team members?
    2) Can the team member download the SQL server 2012 developer edition from Microsoft site and install it on their machines?

    1. Developer edition has license associated with it .And yes you can download it if you have subscription. But please be informed that you cannot use Developer edition in production, its not allowed and illegal.
2.You can upgarde from SQL server 2008 R2 to 2012 developer edition by Inplace upgrade method ,you can also follow side by side approach. For side by side approach you have to get new box ,intall OS,then install SQL server 2012 ,move logins and jobs and move
databases by backup restore. You must see supported upgrades
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393(v=sql.110).aspx
3.No not ins any case ,please dont do that
4.Licensing question should best be asked with Microsoft licensing expert.
reg process of upgarde first run upgrade advisor and look for error if any. Then run SQL server 2012  setup and in maintenance section select edition upgrade, other process is same as SQL Server installtion
