Report program in background

Hello ppl,
I have created a report program which will always be scheduled as a background job.
It downloads the data to application server everytime it is executed.
I want to know how should I display to the user any error which may occur while execution eg. file could not be opened or data not found, etc.
Can the statement 'message e101...' be used for background also?
If so, how will the message be displayed.
Please help.

Hi
If reords not found or report is not giving any result you can always send the report output to user in
mail so that user can get the data or error message in the mail.
You have capture and send the error message to the user in the mail.
For example:
*If records not found
*get the error message pass it as a text to email function module and
send it.
you can use the FM CALL FUNCTION 'SO_OBJECT_SEND'
If some problem happens while the execution of your report then your basis team will inform you about that error.

Hi Experts,
I developed a report to display material change history based on change date range. Report is taking much time (around 15-20 mins) as I'm hitting CDPOS and CDHDR tables. User wants to execute the report in foreground because he/she can give selection criteria that is required everytime.
So, my requirment is now to create another program with same selection screen elements which will execute the original program in background. In the new program, we will be just capturing the selection elements and will pass them to original program to run in background and display a message to user without wait for the background job to complete. Original program should send an email to an fixed email id with the report output as attachment (for example excel file).

Regarding a Change Document Function Module ----- VERY VERY Urgent
When using function modules , I dont think you can directly get data based on material and plant . these function modules usualy works with object class and creation date .
Once you retrieve the data using the function modules you have to filter out the unncecessary data based on your selection screen conditions .

CNTL_ERROR while running a custom report program in background mode

Hi,
I am running a report in background on daily basis. I am using cl_gui_custom_container class here and calling the constructor of this class. I am getting a CNTL_ERROR exception at this point. But if i run the same report directly, it is not throwing any exception. The problem is if i schedule it to background. I am not able to sort it out.
I've written the following code below:
I did apply the logic that you'd mentioned.

After I've implemented the above code I'm getting the following error in the batch job:

Hi Ramesh,
You can use SM36 and use the "Job Wizard" to define a background job in simple step by step procedure
Or
Goto SM37 and specify a job name.
Next specify the ABAP Program Name of the report you want to execute under Job Step.
Then click on "Extended Job Selection" and goto the Period Tab.
There select "Only Periodic Jobs" and then specify the frequency of execution based on Months, Weeks, Days, Hours or Minutes.

Report program when run in background job getting cancelled immediately

When i run a program in foreground i am able to see the output. But when run in background not able to run the job successfully. The job is getting cancelled immediately.
I am using the below function module for output display. Should i need to pass any parameters in the below function module so that i can run the program in background successfully.

Hi Rajani.
ALV require the DRYPOR(screen) for display but incase you run in back ground which have to write to spool but in spool we can only write in format of LIST REPORT not inter-active report like ALV. That why
system cancelled your process immediately.

Getting the variant name when the report program is run in background

Hi All,
How to get the variant name for the report program when run in background? My requirement is to create an email attachement with the name 'variant.XLS', where variant = selection screen variant, when the report program is run in background. The system field SY-SLSET holds the variant name only when run online.

Background Report Program with Variants to be Overwritten

I have an Following Scenario.
I have an Report program with the Selection Screen displaying an Input Parameter of date type sy-datum.This particular program is scheduled as an Background Job.
Now when i execute the program in background the existing variant date must be overwritten with any new values . So please provide an solution for this.

enter date on your selection screen , then save variant.
tick the selection variable check box i.e L.
now click on pushbutton SELETION VARIABLE.
Then select type D and select the criteria current date or whatver of your choice.

Vaue of sy-tcode when executing the report program in the background

Hello All,
To test and find out the value of sy-tcode when the report program is exectued in the background. I have done the below steps.
1. created a report program with the code given below.
Select option was just defiend to get the selection screen. it is of no use.
Select-options: s_name for sy-uname.
Write:/ sy-uname,sy-tcode.
2. then I created a transaction for the program to identify whether the value of sy-tcode explicitly.
3. Then I launched the transaction and in the selection screen of the program I selected the option of executing the program in the backgroung and i process the job immediately.
4 . In the spool I am able to see the correct sy-uname value but not the sy-tcode.
Where as if i am executing it in the foregroung it is giving the correct value of sy-uname and sy-tcode.
Can anybody provide me the reason as to why this is happening . that is in the backgound mode the value of sy-tcode is getting cleared.

As they say it is an SAP standard behavior, you can "hardcode" the transaction itself into the ABAP code...
ie:
if sy-batch eq 'X' "->IT MEANS THAT IT IS A BACKGROUND JOB.

How to run the Batch input session(SM35) in background thru Report program

Hi Experts,
I am working in one modification report requirement ,the report is Mass upload will update and run the file via batch input session. The client requirement is to implement the report execution in background mode , the batch input session will process automatically (ie. the job runs the batch input session in background and process the session ends).
Currently, the report calls SM35 to write a batch input session and the user manually selects the session and record the transactions.
Once the Transaction enters and the selection-screen inputs are given, then the transaction executed in background mode and all the above batch input process to be implemented.
Please advise and guide me, how to proceed.
I need your guidance to proceed via Call transaction using bdcdata statement, if it can be achieved the requirement.

I know the process of the report Execution in background and job steps.
I want the inputs for how to upload thru Batch input session in background job and the session should also processed automatically
Currently the report logic declared like call transaction 'SM35' and skip first screen.Once the report (tcode) executed (not in background) It writes one session in SM35. The user should select the session and process the transaction manually.
The new requirement is, if the report (tcode) executes in background mode...what and how the batch input session should be declared and how it process automatically (like you said mode 'N').

Schedule measurement in SE30 - running a report in the background

Dear experts,
I have a long running ABAP report and I will need to analyze its runtime for performance improvements.
How may I correctly run this ABAP report in the background from SE30 (runtime analysis tool)? The report has to be run using a specific variant for its selection screen inputs as well.
This is what I have done:
1. Go to SE30
2. Click on "For User/Service" button under "Schedule"
3. Create new Schedule Measurement with the following details:-
- User (<my user name>),
- Client (<properly specified>),
- External Session (Any),
- Processing Category (Background Processing),
- Object Type (Report),
- Object Name (<ABAP report program name>),
- Max. No. of Scheduled Measurements (1),
- Expiration Date & Time (<properly specified>)
5. In the screen "Overview of Scheduled Measurements", I have the following displayed as well:-
- Scheduled = 1
- Started = 0
- Errors = 0
- Status = Being processed
Am I still on the right track here? (Started = 0 and there was no way I could specify the variant for the selection screen input values too)

Hi,
you can try it with ST12 and the <ALL Servers> Option for tasktype B.
see this blog:

ST12 uses SE30 / ST05 behind the covers. But here you can switch on
the trace for all servers and therefore don't have to take care for that yourself.

How can I run a Module pool program in Background

Hi all,
I have created report program and called a dialog screen e.g call screen 0100.
this screen contains only one table control and a tabstrip control which allows user to select diffrent options.there is a push button on the application tool bar named as Background. once u click , the report has to run in background.
if its a selection screen , i can easily create a variant n can run it in background.but here its a dialog screen, i m unable to create a variant for it. can anybody tell me how can i saves the user input values and run in background ..plz help me ....

Then implement the BDC Code to Process the SCreens with the Required input Values.
Schedule this BDC Session in Backgound using RSBDCSUB.

How to create a variant and execute a Z-program in background

Hello,
I have created a specific transaction to update relationships between partners (BP).
For this i have create a screen painter, but as the run time is long i want to execute the program in background.
How to save a variant and to execute the report in background ?

Hi,
Please go to your z-transaction.
Enter your selection criteria. & click on save button to save your your selection criteria as a variant.
Now go to tcode SM36 to shedule your program with saved variant.
