Reporting Database growing rapidly

Hello,
Is it normal for the reporting database in SSRS to grow so rapidly? I created a new database 2 days ago, and already it has gone from 300 megabytes the first day to 3gb today. Usually, in a matter of 4-5 months, it grows to 30+ gb.
Is it normal for it to do this? Once it get's too large it starts to slow the nightly refresh of content down and causes it to take much longer. Also, it seems that when it gets large like that, there are noticeable bottlenecks on the SQL box.
If this is normal, is the solution just to create a new reporting database once in a while? Shrink it? What? I looked online and didn't see much info addressing this topic.

It all depends on the number of transactions is carried over the database. If space is going to be constraint
then take a log backup and shrink the log file.

  • Backup of sql database grows rapidly

    Hi,
We have issue with respect to log's over MSSQL, due to logs the size of the database is increasing rapidly.
Can you please provide the best solution as what needs to be done.
    Thanks,
    Chetan Krishna

    Hi,
IMHO  more appropriate term would be :taking log backup makes the VLF *reusable*( reusable would be more correct term) although truncate the logs/making it inactive/cleared all are correct no issue about it yes taking log backup truncates log and makes
it resuable  if nothing is holding log.
Chetan please provide information about recovery model and what does below query return
    select log_reuse_wait_desc from sys.databases where name='db_name'
Please mark this reply as answer if it solved your issue or vote as helpful if it helped so that other forum members can benefit from it.

  • Database grow report

    Hi
What does "database grow report" means and how it is possible to be collected?
    Thanks
    Jonny ...

this report will tell you how your database is growing?
generally we will take database size and tablespace sizes in this report on a timely basis (this time could be week, month or quarter)
by comparing this report will previous one, we will get to know how fast db is growing and accordingly we can plan the space to be added.
the following script will be helpful

  • SYSAUX Growing Rapidly

    Hi,
When i configured IC mode the SYSAUX Growing Rapidly.
Please let me know what happens.
    Thank

    Hello,
Seems like the log mining server has grow this tables due any reason. May be the execution of a large transacction, a massive UPDATE, DELETE or INSERT.
Once these tables have grown, no free space.
Would have to test whether making a shutdown / startup instance these tables are truncated. Since the information they hold, I think, would only be necessary for the Log Miner session.
Which is the result of this queries:
    SELECT COUNT(*) FROM SYSTEM.LOGMNRC_GTCS  ;
    SELECT COUNT(*) FROM SYSTEM.LOGMNR_COL$ ;
You can confirm that there is no transaction in the database for long term? You can look at the view v $ TRANSACTION, has a column that specifies the date and time when a transaction began.
    From MOS:
There is no official way to reclaim the space but as a workaround you can use the DBMS_LOGMNR_D.SET_TABLESPACE routine to recreate all LogMiner tables in an alternate tablespace. For example, the following statement will recreate all LogMiner tables to use the LOGMNRTS tablespace:
    From MOS.
How to Reclaim Space Used by LogMiner Tables (Doc ID 456814.1)
    SQL> connect / as sysdba
    SQL> EXECUTE DBMS_LOGMNR_D.SET_TABLESPACE ('LOGMINER_DATA');
However this command requiere stop GG capture process.
This procedure move the Logminer tables to the tablespace indicated, then, in the move operation the space is compacted.
May be a good practice using GG IC is to define a dedicated tablespace to Logminer.
    I hope help.

  • App-V 5 Reporting Database SQL Mirroring

    Hi,
As I understand, there is a registry entry for the SQL string in order for the App-V Management Database to work with a mirrored database.  However, I've searched all over and could not find an equivalent setting to the Reporting Database.
I understand that the Management DB is important however in my organization we may have over 30,000 clients sending usage data to the reporting server so we would like to ensure that the Database server is fault tolerant by mirror the database.
It is my belief that the Reporting Database will grow larger and have more transactions than the Management Server Database due to client user log collection.

Thanks for the response.  We have implemented the same SQL string we use for Management DB for mirroring and it does not work for Reporting Server.  When we stopped the MSSQL services on the principal SQL DB server.  The App-V Reporting Server
    loses connectivity to the DB.
This is the string that we use for the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\AppV\Server\ReportingService
    Keyname: REPORTING_SQL_CONNECTION_STRING
    Data Source={0};Initial Catalog={1};Integrated Security=True;MultipleActiveResultSets=True;Asynchronous Processing=true;Failover Partner=FQDN_SQL_Mirror_server
We are able to verify that the Management DB with the failover partner string does work.
I just hope somebody from Microsoft can read this and help us out.  Because in a production App-V environment with many clients sending reporting data this will have more impact on our environment than the publishing or management servers.

  • P6 user name is not valid for connecting to the reporting database

No data is available because your P6 user name is not valid for connecting to the reporting database
I am getting above error in the following environment:
P6 running on wls instance 1.
BI Publisger running on wls instance 2
    MS SQL server 2005
Note that the error appears when I clink on the 'Reports' tab in P6. My admin user on P6 has access to report/analyser modules.
To connect P6 to BI Publisher I am using 'PxRptUser' in the P6 configuration for Bi Publisher. I know as well that the WSDL URL is correct and I can test this in SoapUI tool.
In BI publisher I have created the PMDB data source using PxRprUser, and the test of this connection works.
(Because the report samples come with Oracle flavoured SQL that SQL server does not like, I have configured BI Publisher so I have just a single report left that sources it data from an xml file. This works in BI Publisher. It also helps me in that I do not need to add 'WHERE' clauses and parameters required for SQL server?)
Furthermore, using a DB tool, I can connect to my SQL server using PxRPTUser.
So why do I get the error above?
I picked up somewhere that I should not be adding users to BI Publisher. Funny enough, testing the 'login' method the BI Publisher exposes through its WSDL (as above) I noticed I HAD to create the user PxRptUser in BI publisher application itself (on top of PxRptUser in database) for the login web service to work with PxRptUser
That did not solve the connection between P6 and BI Publisher though. What am I missing ...

That user, admin, is the one I have used to access P6. Why is this passed on to BI Publisher? I thought the idea was that the PxRptUser set in BI Publisher configurations in P6 would be used?

  • Error installing P6 Reporting Database 3.0

I am a relative noob when it comes to Oracle applications. And my customer has allowed their Oracle support contract to expire, which makes things so very easy....
I currently have EPPM 8.2 w/Weblogic and OBIEE installed and functional...11.1.1.5....on 2008 R2, with a Solaris backend. I am attempting to install and configure the P6 Reporting Database 3.0. I'm running into errors when running the staretl.bat process for the first time- I believe what is happening is it is trying to pull data into the Star database. It generates the following error:
    *+<12.19.2012 16:50:04> staretl [INFO] (Progress) - Finished Script W_PROJECT_SECURITY_SS.sql+*
    *+<12.19.2012 16:50:10> staretl [INFO] (Message) - Extract2Stage Insert Time for 825327 rows on table W_UDFVALUE_DS is .231 mins (13.85s) at rate 59590.397/s+*

I can view those scripts that are referenced, but they don't mean much to me. The info I've posted is from the log files, so you can see how useless it is....when I spool and run one of them individually, to see what the exact errors are, here is what I get:
    SQL> @ W_PROJECT_DS.sql*
    ORA-06512: at "STARUSER.EXTRACT2STAGING", line 74*
Exception: Error during extract for table W_PROJECT_DS: ORA-00904: "LOCATION_ID": invalid i*

    ERROR at line 1:*

    ORA-06512: at "STARUSER.EXTRACT2STAGING", line 109*
    ORA-06512: at line 2*
I don't pretend to know what the error means, or how I might correct it. Anyone have an idea of where I should start looking?

I have the same issue, but instead of "Location_ID" it claims that the problem is with "LASTUPDATEDATEX" (ORA-00904: invalid identifier). Oracle DB version is 11g, all of the instances (EPPM, ODS, STAR) are hosted on the same server, but are separate instances.
How does the Multimedia component influence this bug?
BTW: Reporting DB version is 3.1 - staretl process has 48 instead of 28 in 3.0 steps.

  • Project Server 2013 reporting database change in Schema from Project Server 2010

I have a current Project Server 2010 implementation, I am planning to migrate to Project Online.
We have Customized Reports that consume from the PS 2010 Reporting DB.
Are there differences in the Reporting DB schema  between PS 2010 and Project Online?
My Question is: if we migrated to Project Online, will the reports crash?
Another question is that, is PS 2013 Reporting DB schema the same as Project Online?

    Hi Atia,
IN project server 2013 we have only one database instead of 4, it means draft, archive, published and reporting with in one database.Project Server 2013 reporting database schema tool that can be downloaded.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/project_programmability/archive/2013/01/28/project-server-2013-reporting-database-rdb-schema-reference.aspx
There are differences in reporting of on-premises vs. Project Online
The Project Server 2013 reporting schema includes three new tables, 27 new views, and a total of 33 tables and views that include new fields.
Answer-1 : Yes there are some differences between PS 2010 and project Online.
Answer-2 : Reports will crash as In Project Online you have to use ODATA to create report. You can not query project online data for reporting directly you have to have use ODATA.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj163015.aspx
Answer-3 : NO, PS 2013 Schema and Project online Schema is different.

  • Change report database

    I guys:
i have a problem when I am trying to change the report database.
the report is currently using a oracle sql to fetch data into the report. when i try to move it to another database (test envirment) tables' schema name is changed so i basicly want to use another query on the new DB, i use the "database|set datasource location" window put new query in.
but CR dont let me to. it shows error: "failed to retrive data from database. "
    anyone can help me?
    thanks
    Howard

You can't if the database tables/fields are not exactly the same as the original report.
Create a new report and if you want the same feature/functions as the original report then copy paste to the new report.
    Thank you

  • Task Total Slack Calculated values mismatching with the values in reporting database

    Hi,
We require 'Task Total Slack' as one of the items in a report for Project Server 2010. We're developing the reports using SSRS wherein the SQL Queries are fired on the reporting database of Project Server 2010.
We've come across a situation wherein the total slack values from reporting database for tasks are mismatching with the values that are seen in either PWA or Project Professional for total slack field. We also could not find a consistent factor by which
the slack is multiplied for reflecting in the database in case the Slack in days was being converted into Hours in reporting databse.
Is there a definite way that these values are being represented in reporting database which is quite different from the way these values are seen in Project Professional? Please help resolving this issue.

    Hi Abhijit PS,
Can you give an example of the mismatch? Also you could tell us if this is happening for all tasks and all projects. Your concern may be seen from 2 different points of view:
Either this is indeed a bug with a slack of 2 days for example in Project Pro and 4 days in your report from the reporting DB. In this case, you should check if the projects have been published correctly and if the Reporting DB is correctly sync'ed with
    the draft DB.
Or it could be the normal behavior and it is just a matter of finding why. For example, the durations are stored in the DB in minutes, meaning that a 1day duration might be stored as 480 if you have 8 working hours in a day (8*60).
    Hope this helps,

  • WF_ITEM_ACTIVITY_STATUSES_H table is growing rapidly in PROD.

    Hi,
We are noticing one of the table WF_ITEM_ACTIVITY_STATUSES_H size was 6 GB on 20-APR-11. Today it is at 25 GB (in 1 month) with 356 million rows and growing rapidly! any idea.
    Thanks
    Rao

I have one question for you. How to purge the workflow date where item_type(OEOH,OEOL) specific only. I would really appreciate if you can guide us in the right direction this issue is becoming more and more critical to the business and also it's degrading the whole back groung process too.
Righ now in prod we are running the "Purge Obsolete Workflow Runtime Data" 21 days Temporary:Y:500:N. i checked the count fro OEOL and OEOH by using below query
    select item_type, count(*)
    from WF_ITEM_ACTIVITY_STATUSES_H group by item_type
    OEOL14982271 14 Million
    OEOH504495652 510 Million
    select count(*) from WF_ITEM_ACTIVITY_STATUSES_H;
    519793016 519 million
    Thanks

  • Move SSRS engine to new server, but keep same reporting databases

We have our SQL Server reporting services (2008 R2) setup as follows:
ServerA: contains the reporting services engine (including the report manager URL, web service URL and so on).
ServerB: Is the sql server instance that hosts the reporting databases for ServerA (ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB).
ServerA is EOL and will be replaced by ServerC. I have two questions:
    1. How do we proceed to install Reporting Services on ServerC so that it points to the databases on ServerB.
    2. How do we migrate the reports (and settings) from ServerA to ServerC.  Will this be automatic by pointing ServerC to the exiting databases on ServerB.
    Thanks.

    Hello,
All reports / Settings are stored in ReportServer database, so if you Keep your database you have nothing to migrate.
Install SSRS without configuration on the new machine and afterwards do the configurtaion with Point the "ReportServer" database to ServerB.
