Resetting the NETBIOS name on Lion

In attempting to reset the NETBIOS name in Lion,  it keeps reverting to the original setting that was picked up by the computer on its own.  Any suggestions?

Have you tried scutil?

You'll want to run it with sudo.
For example: sudo scutil --set HostName My-PCHostname

  • Joining a computer to the domain using the netbios name VS the FQDN

    Where I work we must join computers to the domain using the netbios name (ex: mycomp) vs the FQDN mycompany.tx.com or else problems occur and the computer must be rejoined to the domain again with the netbios name- it can be joined to the domain initially, but after about 15 - 30 mins we'll get an error message when trying to logon.
    The error message I believe is:
    "The system cannot log you on to this domain because the system's computer account in its primary domain is missing or the password on the account is incorrect."
    I haven't seen it happen in a while, but if I remember correctly this is the error message we get -I could be wrong though.
    It may also have just been a "domain is not available" message.
    Some additional info:
    The netbios domain name is diffent then the DNS name ie: "mycompany.tx.com" was not made "mycompany" for netbios, but "mycomp" instead.
    Our DFL is mixed mode with some 2000 and some 2003 servers
    We used to use WINS, but now we do not.
    And lastly we usually add a WINS address along with the dns address in each workstation via "advanced TCP/IP settings" (why I do not know) and occationally I will not be able to join a computer to the domain until I add this WINS address. I know what your thinking, and I will say that I am not 100% all of our WINS server were deactivated.
    Any info on how to figure this out or troubleshoot this would be greatly apprieciated. Thanks a lot.

    Well this happened again.
    As a test before I deployed a PC to one of our branches I joined it to the domain via the FQDN: mycompany.tx.com instead of the netbios name: mycomp prior to shipping. It spent a few days in transit and when it arrived a user plugged it in and tried to logon, but recieved this message:
    "The system cannot log you on to this domain because the system's computer account in its primary domain is missing or the password on that account is incorrect"
    I realize this error message maybe unrelated, but if I recall correctly this is what happened last time.
    I pretty sure I was thorough in removing the computer account from the nessesary DCs (it failed and needed to be replaced) before I joined the replacement to the domain with the same name.
    Rejoining to the domain via "mycomp" corrected the issue.

  • How do I reset the network name and password?

    I just bought an Apple Airport Extreme base station. When I was going to set up the network, I found that it has a name, apple, for the network. I do not have the password to go in further. How do I have to do to rest the whole thing?
    Thank you for your help.
    Robert

    Hold the reset button on the back of the unit for 5-10 seconds. It will reset the name to Apple<lastdigitsofyourextremeid> and will remove the password. You can then use AirPort Utility to configure the password to what you want it to be, if any.

  • In order to sell my macbook air I cleaned and reauthorized everything.  In rebooting to reset the original OSX (Mountain lion), it is not recognizing the wireless network and won't reboot.  Yosemite was installed prior to cleaning the machine.

    I cleaned and reauthorized my macbook air for resale.  But I had upgraded to Yosemite before deciding to sell. (I bought a new machine).  When I went to reboot it it asked for my authorization, and in order to bypass this I reset the internet connection.  Now it won't recognize the wireless internet (I tried resetting the internet and even tried signing on as guest---?! was the symbol that produced).  I did notice that when I upgraded my system, it recognized my computer as a macbook pro, not a macbook air.  I also have a pro and wonder if the wrong operating system was installed in my macbook air and that's why it's giving me grief.  I need to sell this computer and need to be able to reboot it to show.  HELP!

    You should follow these guidelines when preparing a Mac for sale:
    http://www.thesafemac.com/how-to-prepare-your-mac-for-sale/
    In your situation, try this:  Boot the MBA with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys down.
    The result should be a display of a revolving globe.
    By following the instructions, you will be connected to the Apple servers.
    Erase the SSD and you will be able to install the original OSX, Lion.
    When completed, that should allow you to sell the unit.
    Note:  you will need a solid Internet connection.
    Ciao.

  • WRT54G keeps resetting the SSID name and wireless security

    Over the past few weeks, my WRT54G (which I've had for about 18 months) has been resetting itself by changing the SSID name back to the default "linksys" and losing wireless security. I have updated the firmware.
    Any ideas of what is going on here?
    Thanks.

    After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Routers seem to be sensitive to electrical surges and noise. This can cause them to loose their settings. You should keep your router plugged into a high quality surge suppressor with EMI/RFI filtering, such as the Belkin SurgeMaster Gold Series. A surge suppressor alone is not enough because surge suppression does not start until the voltage exceeds 330 volts. Alternatively, most UPS devices have both surge suppression and EMI/RFI filtering.
    If this does not prevent your router from "forgetting" its settings, then the router is malfunctioning, and it should be replaced. A router that forgets its settings is not secure.

  • How do I reset the "administrator" name and password - the one that I use when I first log on? Thanks

    When I first turn on the computer (MacBook Pro) I am required to type in a password.  How do I change that username and password?  Thanks

    ds store wrote:
    Reboot with the installer disk that comes with the computer, you need to hold c while booting, under the second or third screen is a menu option to reset the password.
    This is necessary if you don't remember the password. However if you know it and just wnat to change it, go to system preferences, accounts and then unlock it by typing in the admin name and password (the current one). Now click on the admin account on the side and you can change the name by typing one in the full name: box and the password by clicking the change password button.

  • How do I reset the custom name plus counter back to 1?

    In the export panel is an option to number exported images with a name and a number sequence. The first time I exported a group of photos it numbered them 1 - 25 as you would expect. I needed to reexport them and start again with 1, but it started with 26. The next time, with 75, even though I made a change in the name. Is there any way to reset to 1? Thanks

    Here is a handy dandy guide -
    [Aperture Naming Exported Images|http://photo.rwboyer.com/2008/10/28/aperture-2-quick-tip-naming-exported -images>
    To make a long story short - each preset counter is independent and starts where ever you would like. Just select your name preset and then select edit - you can change the starting number for that preset to whatever you like.

  • Understanding the WINS NetBIOS name in SystemPrefs

    Where does this name come from? And can I (safely) change it in System Prefs?
    When I look on the *Network > Ethernet > Advanced > WINS* tab there is greyed-out name in the *NetBIOS Name* field. Where does this name come from? It does not match the Computer Name that I entered in *System Prefs > Sharing.*
    I have an all-Mac network, running OS X on each Mac (10.6, 10.5, 10.4, 10.3) and a Verizon Actiontec MI424WR Rev C router. Does the router hand out the NetBIOS name along with the IP address when the Mac logs on to the network?
    The names that appear in the NetBIOS Name field are generally the following:
    new
    new-host
    new-host-3
    new-host-4
    (etc)
    Interestingly, I experimented with the router admin and (in the router) renamed my 24" iMac (currently my only Snow-Leopard machine) to MartinsiMac24 and that is now the name that appears in the WINS > NetBIOS name field. Although I could not find any info in the documentation, I suspect the router assigns the NetBIOS names and when I changed it for my 24" iMac, it 'assigned' the new name to the MacAddress (Ethernet ID) of my Snow Leopard machine and that's how it shows up in the WINS > NetBIOS name field. Is my guess correct?

    It appears to be the DNS name associated with your IP address.
    For example, my iMac has the System Preferences -> Sharing -> Computer Name: BobiMac
    But my NetBIOS name is BHARRIS-MAC, which happens to be the DNS name associated with my fixed IP address (this is managed by my company's IT group).
    So if this is most likely being handled by your DNS server, which many times your home router when your IP address is assigned via DHCP. If not, then it is most likely whatever DNS server you have specified.
    NOTE: When I click on the Grayed Out NetBIOS name in System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> WINS, the field blanks out, and I can specify my own NetBIOS name.

  • Netbios name required for Windows 7 clients to connect?

    I upgraded my production server to Lion tonight.
    My Windows 7 test machines (all standalone -- no AD here) now need to log into the server with the netbios name of the 10.7 server as part of the login:
    ie, instead of "maser" as the User Name
    it now requires "<netbiosname>\maser" as the User Name
    Everything works, but that futz's up the pass-through authentication I had set up for the Win7 users whom I had just set their Windows account/password combination to match the 10.6 server account/password combination.
    (smb://<server> from the Mac side doesn't care about the netbios name…)
    Any suggestions on what might need to be tweaked in com.apple.smb.server.plist?

  • Change NetBIOS name in 10.6 Server

    I'm setting up  a new server to replace my PowerMac G5 Leopard server, just got a Mac Pro so I put 10.6 server on there for file sharing services. I cannot figure how to change the NetBIOS name however. When i go into System Prefs and try to change it that way, it points me to Server Admin, but I can't figure out where to change it. It's currently at new-host.local, and I would like to change it to Lambda.local. How do I go about doing this? Thanks

    Hi,
    We can use the active directory rename tools to rename domain NetBIOS name. But it is a complex and risky process.
    For more information about how to use random.exe to rename domain name, please refer to the following article:

  • Bought a second ipad.  How do I reset the first one for my wife?

    My wife has different interests than I.  The books I have on my IPAD are of no interest to here and the games she plays are of no interest to me.  How do I reset the user name on the one IPAD to be hers?

    As long as shes signed in to her Apple ID on her iPad, if she goes to the iBooks app and then to the Store, there should be a section labeled Purchased there, and then she can download the book she wants straight to her iPad since she already puchased once and is authorized to download it to any other iOS device.

  • Netbios Name query injected into socket connect.

    Folks,
    I have a java application which communicates to a networking device via sockets.
    It was written with J2SE 1.4, I have ported it to 1.5/5.0.
    When issuing a socket connect, I observe that the application/JRE is issuing
    several Netbios Name queries to the device.
    The device is responding with ICMP Destination unreachable.
    After 3 Name queries, the socket connect continues as before (1.4) and the app proceeds as before.
    The problem is that the name queries has introduced a 9 second delay to each connect to the appliance and the app now appears unresponsive.
    This did not happen with JRE1.4. I have made no changes to the socket code.
    Is there a way to stop the name queries?
    The getHostName in the JRE connect code below is causing the name queries.
    java.net.SocksSocketImpl
        protected void connect(SocketAddress endpoint, int timeout) throws IOException {
         SecurityManager security = System.getSecurityManager();
         if (endpoint == null || !(endpoint instanceof InetSocketAddress))
             throw new IllegalArgumentException("Unsupported address type");
         InetSocketAddress epoint = (InetSocketAddress) endpoint;
         if (security != null) {
             if (epoint.isUnresolved())
              security.checkConnect(epoint.getHostName(),
                              epoint.getPort());
             else
              security.checkConnect(epoint.getAddress().getHostAddress(),
                              epoint.getPort());
         if (server == null) {
             // This is the general case
             // server is not null only when the socket was created with a
             // specified proxy in which case it does bypass the ProxySelector
             ProxySelector sel = (ProxySelector)
              java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(
                  new java.security.PrivilegedAction() {
                   public Object run() {
                       return ProxySelector.getDefault();
             if (sel == null) {
               * No default proxySelector --> direct connection
              super.connect(epoint, timeout);
              return;
             URI uri = null;
    --->>>>>>>> String host = epoint.getHostName();
             // IPv6 litteral?
             if (epoint.getAddress() instanceof Inet6Address &&
              (!host.startsWith("[")) && (host.indexOf(":") >= 0)) {
              host = "[" + host + "]";
             }Mauro Zallocco.

    The resolution of this is to turn off the new proxy server feature in JRE1.5.
    You do this by informing the jre that you do not have a default proxy server.
    This is done with the following lines of code placed somewhere in you application:
    import java.net.ProxySelector;
    ProxySelector.setDefault(null);
    With this, the NetBIOS name queries do not emanate, and we revert back to the 1.4 behavior.
    Mauro Zallocco.
