[RESOLVED] Script at KDE startup
I'm trying to run a script at KDE startup, I tried the following:
user.desktop file in:
$HOME/.config/autostart
or a all.sh file in:
$HOME/.kde4/Autostart
The former has my preference. I checked that these scripts and paths are present and enabled in KDE System Settings -> Startup and Shutdown but these files do not seem to be triggered by KDE. What could be the problem? If I double-click on the desktop file in a file explorer, then the script does get launched, so it does not seem the be a corrupt desktop file.
My desktop file:
[Desktop Entry]
Exec=sh -c "${HOME}/%/start/all.sh"
Hidden=false
Name=User Startup
Type=Application

You could try using the autostart kcm in systemsettings. By default, you should find that plasma-desktop (or netbook) and perhaps krunner are pre-enabled for autostarting. If you want to dig deeper, these files are being placed in .kde4/share/autostart/, not in the directories you've been trying. Try the GUI for easy set up. Or place your .desktop files in that directory and edit accordingly (using the already working .desktop files as a guide) to have it work.

Hey there,
ever since I installed KDE (plasma) on my notebook it has been really slow to start and doesn't show a progress bar, just fades in after 30 seconds or thereabout.
I looked at my journal and it presented this to me

It registers and unregisters like a million keys but that 24 seconds delay seems unnecesarry. Do you guys have an idea to what could cause this?
I attached the whole kde startup log here:

I am getting an error message "Could not resolve <Script>
to a component implementation." This is the code I am attempting to run, from
the tutorials offered by Adobe.
<Script>
{import mx.controls.Alert;}
</Script>
I've tried this without brackets, with <> symbols, around the import, and everytime I get an error. any suggestions? I'm brand new to flex, but for the most part find it rather simple to do. however, when i get an error it's impossible to figure out how to fix it!the <fx:Script> worked. Thanks!!

Until yesterday my sound worked fine, both at KDE startup and in KDE. After Syu'ing yesterday no sound at KDE startup. However, sound works to extent that aplay plays .wav files. Suspecting that the upgrade altered a config file, I checked the alsa config files and nothing had changed. I don't know where to look in KDE itself other than the sound section, which was also unchanged.
No big deal, upgrading is always a digital experiment. Just curious.
Any intel would be most appreciated.rls wrote:

Correct, arts is running and sound is working. After a bit more research, I realize that I have not stated my question precisely. It is a Systems Notifications issue. None of the System Notifications using sound work, not just the startup sound.
Many thanks for your efforts.
he he .. ups, i was thinking that arts do not work and you have no sounds in kde --- can be my bad english or not so exact reading :-)
Control>Sounds & Multimedia>System Notifications>KDE System Notifications
is the only thing to set notifications in kde, but it is a tricky one (the UI is not well made):
- check if the volume is set ok: in the "Configure - System Notifiactions" check under the button "Player Settings..." if your volume is not muted (you do not need other player)
- if you select a notification that has sound set ... if you click on the button to test sound, does it work? ... check if the files exist
else i dont know what to try to check why it is not working right ... arts works, so it's not a backend problem ... but a kde-one :-( -

How to create a script for DB Startup
Hi to all,
I need to create a script for DB Startup with this command:
sqlplus /nolog
conn sys/mypwd as sysdba;
startup;
exit
It is possible ?
At now, when I run Sqlplus /nolog I see only the prompt sql>.
I Hope in Your help.
Best Regards
GaetanoHi,
Assuming you are on Windows environment. You may use the following two scripts to startup the database.
startup.bat
========
net start OracleServiceYOUR_INSTANCE_NAME
set oracle_sid=YOUR_INSTANCE_NAME
D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\bin\sqlplus /nolog @C:\DBA\startDB.sql
net start OracleOraDb10g_home1TNSListener
pause
startDB.sql
=========
connect sys/your_password as sysdba
startup pfile=D:\ORACLE\ORADBA\pfile\init.ora
exit
Similarly, you may write your own shutdown script. -
Need steps to run a shell script at solaris startup
Hi Forum,
I have a simple script which need to get executed at the time of solaris 10 system startup. Can any one tell me procedure to make the script run at startup in solaris 10 sparc systems.
Regards
PrakashThe best way is to setup a SMF manifest so that the svc process can handle your program. The easiest way however is to simply put the script within the legacy init.d structure. Check out /etc/init.d and the README file in there. Also be sure to look into the init.d(4) manualpage.
Easiest way IMO. -
Hi,
I am trying to launch Amazon EC2 windows server 2008 R2 instance using AWS Auto Scaling feature. I have used cusmized AMI in Autoscaling Launch configuration to launch an instance.I have placed Power Shell script in AMI.
The responsibility of script is to download code from AWS S3 and deploy in IIS server while windows startup first time.
When i check status, IIS is started succesfully. But default Application pool is not started.
To resolve this issue i have written one scheduled script. It helps to start the application pool if any application pool is in stopped state.
After this Application pool is started but i am not able to communicate with IIS server through browser.
Please help any one to resolve this issue.
Thanks in advanceHi Vchreddy,
For the IIS issue, we recommend you can post in IIS forum for more effective support:

Thanks for your understanding. -
Unable to Resolve Script Error Message
Hi,
I am using Windows Vista and Acrobat Adobe Extended Version 9.
I am struggling with a script. I am sure it is something simple; however, I am struggling mightily with it. I am getting an error message, shown below, that I am unable to understand and resolve.
I am trying to calculate age when given a birthdate. I used "Search" to find a script here at Adobe forums.
Here's the script that I am using:
StoneG, "Third Time Lucky to get Age from DOB entry" #1, 24 Oct 2006 7:21 am
// Jared Langdon
// J. Langdon Consulting
// www.jlangdon.ca
// DOB = Date of Birth
var strDOBYear = Birthdate.rawValue.substr(6,4);
var strDOBMonth = Birthdate.rawValue.substr(0,2);
var strDOBDay = Birthdate.rawValue.substr(3,2);
var oDOB = new Date(parseInt(strDOBYear,10), parseInt(strDOBMonth,10)-1, parseInt(strDOBDay,10) );
var oToday = new Date();
// determine whether the person's birthday has already occurred this year
var bBirthdayHasOccurred = false;
if (oDOB.getMonth() < oToday.getMonth()) bBirthdayHasOccurred = true; if ((oDOB.getMonth() == oToday.getMonth()) && (oDOB.getDate() <= oToday.getDate())) bBirthdayHasOccurred = true;
var nCurrentAge = 0;
if (bBirthdayHasOccurred)
nCurrentAge = oToday.getFullYear() - oDOB.getFullYear();
else
nCurrentAge = oToday.getFullYear() - oDOB.getFullYear() - 1;
this.rawValue = nCurrentAge;
==========
I changed the script slightly. I changed from:
var strDOBYear = DateOfBirth.rawValue.substr(6,4);
to
var strDOBYear = Birthdate.rawValue.substr(6,4);
My variable is "Birthdate".
And I changed boolBirthdayHasOccurred to bBirthdayHasOccurred.
Upon opening the file in Acrobat 9, my error messages is as follows:
Acrobat JavaScript Debugger Functions Version 9.0
Acrobat EScript Built-in Functions Version 9.0
Acrobat Annotations / Collaboration Built-in Functions Version 9.0
Acrobat Annotations / Collaboration Built-in Wizard Functions Version 9.0
Acrobat SOAP 9.0
Birthdate.rawValue has no properties
8:XFA:form1[0]:#subform[0]:Age[0]:calculate
The line above repeats several times. And then...
boolBirthdayHasOccurred is not defined
19:XFA:form1[0]:#subform[0]:Age[0]:calculate
boolBirthdayHasOccurred is not defined
19:XFA:form1[0]:#subform[0]:Age[0]:calculate
Birthdate.rawValue has no properties
8:XFA:form1[0]:#subform[0]:Age[0]:calculate
Birthdate.rawValue has no properties
I have no idea why it mentions "boolBirthdayHasOccurred" because that text is not even present. The last two lines repeat more several times.
When I have delete this entire script, the problems disappears. I have tried finding "boolBirthdayHasOccurred" without success.
Can someone point me in the right direction to troubleshoot this problem?
Regards,
KevinHi Paul,
>>The default would be the format that your machine has set.
That's interesting. So the users' machines are very likely different than mine. So there's no way of knowing in advance. That would seem to make the routine suggested by Jared Langdon (see my top post in this thread) somewhat troublesome? If users' machines are set differently than his, then his routine wouldn't work?
I learned two important items with this task:
1) I need to somehow specify (as done by Stephen) the format of the date numbers before I use them;
2) Rather than using the Calculation Event on the Age, I should instead use Exit Event on the Date-of-Birth field.
Thank you for your response.

Running script automatically at startup at system level
Hi all,
I am a newbie with MAC. I am looking for some application that is equivalent to Window's Task Scheduler - bascially, I have a bash script and I would like it to start running at startup and be always running in the background, no matter who logs into the computer, and whoever logged in can restrat the script if needed.
Background info (if that helps understand what I am trying ot accomplish):
I am using Selenium (a UI automation tool) to automate some web testing, and my script will be calling the Selenium library to start a server to listen for requests, and it will launch browser and run tests when a request comes in.
Long story short about what I want:
I would like to automate opening up a terminal and running a bash script when my MAC starts up, and have the script always running in the background regardless of which user is currently logged in, and I would like the user to be able to stop the script and restart it if it somehow gets stuck.
I did some quick research and found out about Automator. I would like to find out/confirm if Automator is what and all I need? If not, what are my options out there?
Any suggestion and advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much for reading!I'm not sure whether this should be a LaunchDaemon or a LaunchAgent - if it requires user interaction as you sugest it should really be the latter, so that's what I'll show how to do.
Open TextEdit, make sure the open document is set to plain text (not rich text), copy in the following text, then save it as user.bash_script.autostart in the folder /Library/LaunchAgents/. Then restart the machine or load the plist using launchctl in terminal.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>RunAtLoad</key>
<true/>
<key>Label</key>
<string>user.bash_script.autostart</string>
<key>Program</key>
<string>/path/to/bash script</string>
<key>KeepAlive>
<true/>
</dict>
</plist>
This job will start the script as a daemon so that it's running for all users. The KeepAlive key specifies that if the daemon quits launchd should automatically restart it. It's up to you to make sure users have the correct permissions to quit the process if it gets stuck.
Note: using a LaunchAgent means that a separate instance of this process will be created for each user who logs in, and that the process will not be running if no user is logged in. if you need to have one running instance for all users you need to use a LaunchDaemon. However, LaunchDaemons are not supposed to have user interaction, which it seems like you want. more details would be helpful. -
WOL, init scripts and KDE
Hello
So, I may be confused with how init scripts are working, but in this case there is something I do not get.
I am trying to be an energy efficient geek, so I decided to set-up a Wake On Lan (WOL) on my home server. The WOL itself is working fine, no issue on this side, but in order to have this working after each reboot, and according to the wiki, I have to add the following code to my rc.local file to set the WOL flag to my network interface.
ethtool -s eth0 wol g
And here is the problem : by default, my "server" starts a kde session after the boot. So my inititab is like that :
## Only one of the following two lines can be uncommented!
# Boot to console
# id:3:initdefault:
# Boot to X11
id:5:initdefault:
# Example lines for starting a login manager
#x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/xdm -nodaemon
#x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon
x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon
#x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >/dev/null 2>&1
With these settings, the WOL flag is not set correctly after the boot. Now, if I do not start kde, use a console login and change my inittab to :
## Only one of the following two lines can be uncommented!
# Boot to console
id:3:initdefault:
# Boot to X11
#id:5:initdefault:
# Example lines for starting a login manager
x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/xdm -nodaemon

In this case, the command in rc.local is executed correctly and my WOL flag is set as I want. So, either kde overwrites the flag when it starts or the rc.local file is not executed.
Anyone with a clue of what is going on and how to solve that ?
Thanks !

Since your problem is solved, it might be the right time to ask my question to you regarding WOL:
My server broadcasts it's IP across the network to be discoverable as a uPNP-server. I'm guessing that functionality will be lost if it is turned off, so I should configure all my uPNP-clients to send a magical packet whenever I decide to use them (which would be nearly impossible: I don't see this possibility for a PS3...)
I am not an expert in uPNP, but I am afraid that there is not a lot of solutions to your problem. If your server is powered off, then something has to wake him up. You can probably do that from your laptop/desktop or your router directly but I do not think a PS3 can do it. And having to send the magic packet manually each time you want to use a uPNP device kind of defeat the convenience of the uPNP. -
How does one run a shell script at system startup?
Hi,
I am trying to unmount my Boot Camp hard drive on my MacBook Pro. Now what I could do is create an automator action, save it as an application and then put it into my user´s login items. I am wondering though - shouldnt it be possible to run a simple shell script command like +diskutil unmount /Volumes/"Boot Camp"+ sometime during the startup process?
Or to put it another way - is there an easy way to do this or do i have to create an manage a daemon through launchd ?
Your help is very much appreciated.sorry I forgot to mention that there is a bug in Lingon which creates a plist incorrectly if you enter your script explicitly on line 2. At least I haven't been able to make it work. A workaround I always use it the following.
Save your script as a *plain text* file from your favorite text editor. change the extension to .sh and make the file unix executable. Now, when you ccreate a launch daemon using Lingon, enter the path to that file instead of the script itself.
This always works for me.
Good luck! -
Solaris 11 - run a simple BASH script on computer startup
I need to have a simple BASH script run on my Solaris 11 machine automatically whenever the computer (re)starts. It should be run with root permissions and after the computer has fully booted. What is the easiest way to do that?
Thank you
DusanHi user9368043
Yes, that should be right, and be intended this way.
See /etc/rc3.d/README and the following part from smf(5):
Legacy Startup Scripts
Startup programs in the /etc/rc?.d directories are executed
as part of the corresponding run-level milestone:
/etc/rcS.d milestone/single-user:default
/etc/rc2.d milestone/multi-user:default
/etc/rc3.d milestone/multi-user-server:default
Your question concerning upgrading to Solaris 11.1:
In the Gnome menus, you should look for (and start)
System --> Administration --> Update Manager
Let it do its work. It will give you a new boot environment, containing Solaris 11.1. Possibly, you have to perform upgrading twice. With "beadm activate", see beadm(1M), you can go back to Solaris 11.0 whenever you want.
"Local" parts of your zfs root pool, like /usr/local, home directories, /root, and so on, should be in separated file systems, and be mounted outside the root pool before upgrading. They are availlable then from any boot environment, and will not be duplicated. See more in zfs(1M), zpool(1M).
I strongly recommend upgrading. Solaris 11.1 is great.
