Restart application on single server of a cluster

Hi all,
I have a cluster of three nodes/servers and I have deployed 2 applications on this cluster.
I want to know if is it possible to stop and to start an application in a single server of the cluster, not on all servers of the cluster.
Example:
Cluster --> servers: 1, 2, 3
Deployed applications --> A, B
I want to stop B only at server 2, is it possible? If yes, how?
Thank you in advance,
Indrit Selimi

Thank you very much for responding.
Yes, I agree that theoretically all the nodes on the cluster will be aligned and there will be (and must be) no difference between nodes. But in real life applications, it can happen for example that one of the servers fails (ex. out of memory) and you have to reboot it; now, if for some reason application B fails to start (ex. problem with data source etc); why I should reboot the server halting also application A that have no problem? For this reason I was asking if there was a way to restart one application on single server of a cluster.
Thank you very much again.
Indrit

  • Slower in Weblogic cluster server than a single server

I have an application in my development environment which is a single server of WebLogic 8.1 SP4. It is working fine in terms of performance. But once I deployed the same application into our test environment which is a cluster setup with WebLogic 8.1 SP4. The performance in the test env was significantly dropped. I asked for your help. Any advice and suggestions would be highly appreciated.

  • Deployment from a single BEA server to a cluster

    Hi,
We have developed a Web application on a single BEA server while we
want to deploy the Web application on a cluster of 3 servers.
              1. Do you think we will need to change the code? since we have
referenced the single server port in our code/properties files.
              2. Can I configure the single server as an admin server in a cluster.
              3. Would appreciate pointers to documentation.
              Thanks,

    Hi Ethan,
As for source code changes, it depends on your app. We often do this type of
consulting on clustering with Weblogic, and the common problems that we've
              seen are:
--> session attributes must be serializable
--> code that relies on globals (such as static fields or servlet context
              attributes)
--> web processing that is not idempotent (makes seamless failover
              impossible)
--> code that assumes the app server is the exposed address (i.e. the user
types "http://www.myco.com" but that is just the address of the proxy -- the
app server is hidden maybe inside a firewall on a machine whose name isn't
              visible to the end users)

  • One Search service application for multiple web applications in a single server

We are planning to host 17 Web applications in a single Server. Do I need to create search service application for each web application or I need to create one  Search service application , create a Content source for each web
application and create a Result source for filtering. Which is the best approach. And which approach takes more RAM memory.
In my application I am using Search web part, "Recently Changed Items", "Popular Items" web parts. when I created only one one  Search Service application for all web applications and using Result sources ,
I am not getting the results. What could be the problem.

    Hi,
One SSA is ok, but you should think about access rights. If the access is clear cut between all the web apps you should be ok with one SSA. Multiple result sources limiting on content source also works, but could easily be bypassed.
Multiple SSA's will eat up RAM/CPU like a mother :)
As for popular etc.. it could be due to how those sources are set up, but haven't investigated or tested this much.
    Thanks,

You're getting that probably because the WL instance was not shut down properly.
If that's the case, you'll need to remove an ldap lock file (with a .lok extension) in the directory of ldap files (under the server dir) .

  • Restoring single server DRS backup to cluster?

    Hi all,
We are migrating to a new cluster from a single MCS server. I have a DRS backup from the single server, and we have already built up the new Pub and Sub for testing pursposes. We have finished testing and want to migrate. The new hardware has been set up with the same hostname and IP as the existing hardware, so I can just do a DRS restore straight on to the new publisher.
My question is, do I need to restore to the publisher, then rebuild and re-add the subscriber? Or if I simply disconnect the sub, restore to the pub and reconnect the sub, will the database replication take care of it?
All the security passwords and hostnames and IPs will be the same between the old and new hardware.
    Thanks

I suggest that you reinstall the publisher OS, restore the DRS backup, and then reinstall and join the subscriber to the cluster. I say this because there are OS and database-level changes that take place when you add a node to the cluster. The DRS restore will cleanly restore the publisher database and cause the database replication to tear down. It's not documented whether this would clear out the OS-level configuration as well though. If this is production it's not worth the risk of 'maybe'. To be frank, the whole cluster replication setup is a bit touchy.

  • How to disable autostart (application) when managed server restart ?

    Hi Ppl,
How to disable autostart (application) when managed server restart ?
I want some of the applications to remain not started. In WebSPhere, we have an option disable auto start for applications.
    I don't find in weblogic.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I agree with Faisal. When you shutdown your WL server while the application is running, the thing is when you start your server again, it would automatically start the application with it. Now if the application was down when you shutdown the server, it _the application_ won't start with the server.
So it depends on the application last state, when you start your server.

  • Best Practice when deploying a single mdb into a cluster

At a high level, we are converting all of our components to Weblogic processes that use Stateless Session Beans and Message Driven Beans. All of the weblogic processes will be clustered, and all of the topic queues will be distributed (Uniform Distributed Topics / Queues).
We have one component that is a single MDB reading from a single queue on 1 machine. It is a requirement that the JMS messages on that queue be processed in order, and the processing of messages frequently requires that the same row in the DB be updated. Does anyone have any thoughts on the best design for that in our clustered environment?
One possible solution we have come up with (not working):
Possible Solution 1: Use a distributed topic and enforce a single client via client-id on the connection factory, causing a single consumer.
              1.Deploy a uniform-distributed Topic to the cluster.
              2.Create a connection factory with a client-id.
3.Deploy a single FooMDB to the cluster.
Problem with Solution 1: WL allows multiple consumers on Topic with same client-id
              1.Start (2) servers in cluster
2.FooMDB running on Server_A connects to Topic
3.FooMDB running on Server_B fails with unique id exception (yeah).
4.Send messages - Messages are processed only once by FooMDB on Server_A (yeah).
              5.Stop Server_A.
6.FooMDB running on Server_B connects automatically to Topic.
7.Send messages - Messages are processed by FooMDB on Server_B (yeah).
              8.Start Server_A
9.FooMDB successfully connects to Topic, even though FooMDB on Server_B is already connected (bad). Is this a WL bug or our config bug??
10.Send messages - Messages are processed by both FooMDB on Server_A and Server_B (bad). Is this a WL bug or our config bug??
Conclusion: Does anyone have any thoughts on the best design for that in our clustered environment? and if the above solution is doable, what mistake might we have made?
Thank you in advance for your help!
              kb

Thanks for the helpful info Tom.
Kevin - It seems that for both the MDB, and the JMS provider, there are (manual or scripted) actions to be taken during any failure event + failure probes possibly required to launch these actions...?
In the case of the JMS provider, the JMS destination needs to be migrated in the event of managed-server or host failure; if this host is the one that also runs the Admin server then the Admin server also needs to be restarted on a new host too, in order that it can become available to receive the migration instructions and thus update the config of the managed server which is to be newly targetted to serve the JMS destination.
In the case of the MDB, a deployment action of some sort would need to take place on another managed-server, in the event of a failure of the managed server or the host, where the original MDB had been initally deployed.
The JMS Destination migration actions can be totally avoided by the use of another JMS implementation which has a design philosophy of "failover" built into it (for example, Tibco EMS has totally automatic JMS failover features) and could be accessed gracefully by using Weblogic foreign JMS. The sinlge MDB deployed on one of the Weblogic managed servers in the cluster would still need some kind of (possibly scripted) redeployment action, and on top of this, there would need to be some kind of health check process to establish if this re-deployment action was actually required to be launched. It is possible that the logic and actions required just to establish the true functional health of this MDB could themsevles be as difficult as the original design requirement :-)
All of this suggests that for the given requirement; the BEA environment is not well suited; and if no other environment or JMS provider is available at your site, then a manipulation of process itself may be required to enable it to be handled in a highly-available way which can be gracefully administered in a Weblogic cluster.
We have not discussed the message payload design and the reasons that message order must be respected - by changing the message payload design and possibly adding additional data, this requirement "can", "in certain circumstances", be avoided.
If you can't do that, I suggest you buy a 2 node Sun Cluster with shared HA storage and use this to monitor a simple JMS client java program that periodically checks for items on the Queue. The Tibco EMS servers could also be configured on this platform and give totally automatic failover protection for both process and host failure scenarios. With the spare money we can go to the pub.
P.S. I don't work for Tibco or Sun and am a BIG Weblogic fan :-)

  • How to manually completely remove a J2EE application from the server?

    Hello,
I have created and deployed a certain test J2EE application.
After I finished with it I wanted to remove it, yet I cannot do it: Any removal attempt, either by the SDM or Admin Tool, encounters exceptions and errors I cannot handle. I tried restarting the server, stopping the application yet nothing works. on telnet the application has always STOPPING ststus...

as per the wiki link : http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/BOBJ/FromDEVtoQAtoPRODusingLifeCycleManager
If you have a clustered deployment, you could have a standalone server just for LCM (CMSAdaptive Processing ServerWeb AppLCM) or you could install LCM in one of servers in the cluster. If this is a Windows distributed install (i.e. Web Application Server and CMS are on different machines) you will need to do a manual install of LCM.+
Our problem is that all DEV,UAT and Production in diffrent domain and with Firewall enabled.
So we will have to open up the ports between them and LCM server.
Please help us with the list of ports and any other suggetions which may help us.
    Thanks

Remember, you don't necessarily have to open up the Firewall between environments-- LCM provides the ability to transport content using a BIAR file (Business Intelligence Archive Resource). A BIAR file is basically a Zip file with your content, and an XML manifest. You can use LCM to create a BIAR file from your Test environment for example, then manually transport that file over to Production and use the LCM server there to deploy it to Production.
If you do want to open the firewall between systems, a good start is with ports 6400 and 6401, which are the ports that the CMS uses (as the two CMSs will need to communicate with each other) You may also want to have a look at the LCM Installation and Deployment Guide from http://help.sap.com to see what other ports they recommend opening between the different servers.
You can find the installation and deployment guide here:

  • Reverse proxy to applications on a server by just domain names possible?

    Hi All
I am looking for a solution to set up a single server, that hosts four J2EE web applications running on a Glassfish application server with just only one IP address.
When a user wants to use an application, he/she can just type URL without specifing port and path, and the corresponding web application will be displayed accordingly as shown below
    http://sub1.domain1.com -- > webapp1 at port 9100
    https://sub2.domain1.com -- > webapp2 at port 9200
    http://sub1.domain2.com -- > webapp3 at port 9300
    https://sub2.domain2.com -- > webapp4 at port 9400
I am wandering whether I could use reverse proxy of Sun Java System Web Server 7 to route the traffic from the domain names to their own application on Glassfish as shown above? I tried by creating two HTTP listeners to listen at port 80, and 443 respectively, but I could not access different applications based on domain names without specifying specifix path or port.
Is there any recommended resources or example of the mapping, or any other suggested solution?

Thank you for your reply nsegura. I created 4 different virtual servers as you suggested and it worked :)
However, I have a problem in reverse proxy base on path.
    The scenario is below
I have an J2EE application that needs to be deployed in three different environment (production, training, testing). It
is the same application for three environments, so I want them to have the same context-root. I want to use Sun Web Server 7.0 to reverse proxy to the application in each environment based on path, not URL redirect. Example of URL are shown below
    https://sub.domain3.com/app -- > http://localhost:9500 (with context-root /app)
    https://sub.domain3.com/training/app -- > http://localhost:9600 (with context-root /app)
    https://sub.domain3.com/testing/app -- > http://localhost:9700 (with context-root /app)
So far, it works if I set context-root of the application in each environment differently
    https://sub.domain3.com/app -- > http://localhost:9500 (with context-root /app)
    https://sub.domain3.com/training/app -- > http://localhost:9600 (with context-root /training/app)
    https://sub.domain3.com/testing/app -- > http://localhost:9700 (with context-root /testing/app)
I am wandering whether there is a solution with Sun Web Server 7 that I can use to achieve reverse proxy of the same application in different environments without having to modifying context-root for each environment and use URL redirect?
I was thinking about using rewriting path with reverse proxy, but I did not see this function under reverse proxy tab.
    Any ideas?

  • Scale out sharepoint server search to index server and Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Web Application to new server

    Hi
in my single server these below service are running:
    SharePoint Server Search
    User Profile Service
    Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Web Application
here how i scale out  Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Web Application  to another server
and  SharePoint Server Search  to new index server.
    adil

Check here to see how to add servers to the farm:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc261752(v=office.15).aspx
What Inderjeet meant was that if you chose to install SharePoint as a single server instead of a complete farm, you won't be able to add servers to the farm at a later time. You can check if this is the case by checking the registry key he mentioned. If
that is indeed the case, there's nothing to it but reinstall the farm.
So that is why you never should choose the single server option, it locks you in and limits future options, while choosing to install sharepoint as a complete farm it's still perfectly acceptable to host it on a single server.
    Kind regards,

and when i click on Crawl Log and content source
    it throws the below error
The search service is currently offline. Visit the Services on Server page in SharePoint Central Administration to verify whether
the service is enabled. This might also be because an indexer move is in progress
When i check the search status
Get-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceInstance, it shows all the components are online.
As of now search service application is online and search is working. But not sure why it throws the above error.
I have restarted timer service, search service in services.msc and cleared the sharepoint cache as well.
But no luck,This is happening in my prodcution environment.

    Please try below mentioned steps:
    1. Central Administration > Monitoring > Review job definitions > Look for following timer job "Application Server Administration Service Timer Job" > Disable
    2. Then open windows administrative services (services.msc), stop SharePoint Timer Service
    3. Clear SharePoint Timer configuration cache by following steps mentioned in below blog:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jamesway/archive/2011/05/23/sharepoint-2010-clearing-the-configuration-cache.aspx
    4. Start SharePoint Timer Service and give it a few seconds so that the new XML files from the location you deleted then are re-populated.
5.Central Administration > Monitoring > Review job definitions > Look for following timer job "Application Server Administration Service" Timer Job > Enable

  • Sql developer won't connect with SQL server database on cluster

    Hello,
I have a microsoft SQL server database on a windows cluster. Name for this cluster is like XXX/YYY
When I try to connect to this database with SQL developer, I get a failure, mentioning:
"Status : Failure -Cannot connect to Miscrosoft SQL Server on XXX/YYY"
As far as I know, I have installed the correct jtds driver (version 1.2.5), since I can connect to sql server databases on single server hosts.
Does anyone know how to connect to databases on windows clusters?

  • Multiple Oracle Products on Single Server

Can we install Multiple Oracle Products for Development and Testing on a Single Server?
    Oracle Database 9i Enterprise Edition.
    Oracle 9i Application Server
Oracle Applications 11i (Financials GL,HRMS PAYROLL)
    Oracle Discoverer 4.x
Oracle Internet Developer Suite (Forms Server, Reports Server,
    If yes,
Do they need to be in separate ORACLE_HOME or same ?
Also what should be the sequence of Install, i.e. what should be installed first?

The following products needs to be in their own Oracle Home:
Oracle Database 9i Enterprise Edition. --> in its own O_H
Oracle 9i Application Server --> in its own O_H (assuming this is 1.0.2.2 or 9.0.2)
Oracle Applications 11i (Financials GL,HRMS PAYROLL) --> in its own O_H
Oracle Discoverer 4.x --> in its own O_H (this is a 806 based product btw)
Oracle Internet Developer Suite (Forms Server, Reports Server) --> This can either be in its own O_H or in the O_H which has 1.0.2.2 Oracle9i Application Server.
