Restarting/resetting my device did NOT resolve this problem. What is the hang up? Why can't I backup my iPad???

The original iPad cable was damaged while on vacation. Does the backup process require the proprietary cable to facilitate the connection for backup?
Note: synching works fine. This is about backups..NOT synching.

The iPad syncs fine. It's when I try to create the back up that's the problem.
I have the cable for my iPod Touch (3rd Gen) and a replacement cable bought with a 3rd party charger specifically for charging iPads.
