Desktop integration for lightweight WM users
I've been using fluxbox for some time now, and one thing I often miss is better integration between apps. I'm not talking crazy KDE drag anything into anything integration, just "click an URL in Thunderbird, open it in Firefox, click e-mail address in Abiword, start new message in Thunderbird".
The examples I've given work just fine when you've got a full blown DE running, but not in fluxbox without gnome-base or kde-base installed. What I mean is that us lightweight WM users generally get shitcanned.
What I'm thinking is that there must be a light solution to this, some kind of very thin daemon that handles this kind of thing without all the pomp of KDE/Gnome.
So, do you guys know any app that does what I'm looking for?
I'll admit I haven't done much legwork to find it, but as soon as I have the time I'll check if Xfce (the closest thing to a DE I'd consider installing) has a modular enough app I can use.
If you change the network.protocol-handler.app.http and network.protocol-handler.app.https strings in thuanderbird to point to firefox it will open links in firefox. You can either use the about:config extension or just edit one of the user*.js files, not sure which js file though

Hi,
I have 12 MAC OS X 10.6 Clients on A Windows 2008 R2 Server. I cannot use Group Policies from Active Directory to customise my default user desktops on the MACs. Can I do this from the MAC stations? It has to work for network users not just local accounts?

TimIf you're looking to make a desktop background universal and system wide regardless of user, then it's easy. The default user folder is in /System/Library/User\ Template
It's protected from access unless you're logged in as root, either in the gui or terminal.
Just change the pertenant preference file in the Library folder to reflect your new desktop background and all should be well. Any time a NEW user logs in, when their home folder is created, it will include that desktop background pref file.
If you're running the magic triangle, then you just have to set that preference in Workgroup Manager.
If you're not sure or comfortable with this, then write back and we'll help you further. More info on your server set up etc would be helpful in this regard.

Create a 1-click setup for a Remote Desktop session for non-tech users
Hi everyone,
I know how to configure a VPN or use port forwarding for VNC, ARD, etc. and know about iChat's Screen Sharing feature and sites like LogMeIn. But I'm looking for something special here. This is the situation:
• A user calls me for help and I would prefer a Remote Desktop session
• He's usually behind a NAT router which hasn't been set up to allow remote access
• He's absolutely NOT tech savy
So I'd like to have an easy way to allow me to initiate a Remote Desktop session (ARD/VNC) with as little user interaction needed as possible. I don't want to walk him through reconfiguring his router on the phone!
I was thinking of using iChat's Screen Sharing first. But I'd need to create a jabber account, save iChat's preference file, maybe pack it into a little "Installer" and mail it to him. So all he needs to do is double-click it and run iChat afterwards and accept me.
But this is a little too much for my taste and I'm wondering if there isn't already a "best practice" or something like that. Any ideas or suggestions?

BjörnI've recently started using TeamViewer. If you can walk a person through going to http://www.teamviewer.com and clicking on "Start Full Version" and getting them to download it and run it, then you're good to go. It's cross-platform both ways so you can control a Mac from a PC and a PC from a Mac in addition to M-M and P-P. If they're on a PC, the download is an executable which when they double-click it, asks them if they'd like to run it or install it. Just have them run it and in a few seconds they will have an ID number and random password generated that they can tell you over the phone. Then you type it into your TeamViewer app and you're controlling their screen. If they're on a Mac, the download is a disk image so you have them mount it and then just run the app directly from the disk image. Once you're connected you can fully install the app for future use or just help them out. It's pretty much the simplest cross-platform control system I've found to deal with situations where it's not already setup for me to support. On top of all that, it's free for personal use!

Is Remote Desktop overkill for a home user?
I need to dependably control three remote MACs. The home MACs are local and the other is in another state. I may also need to control any of these while on the road.
logmein.com seems to have connection problems from time to time and Mesh doesn't seem to be a viable solution (plus I don't like MS).
I don't mind paying higher price for Apple's product and believe that ARD would be the most reliable solution.
I realize that using Apple's solution would limit me to MAC to MAC connections (couldn't PC to MAC) using ARD...
What are your thoughts?ARD could be a bit of overkill, it all depends on what you need to do.
We use LogMeIn for connecting to laptops out of the office, and for connecting to home machines from work/road when ARD fails to connect. Which, depending on the version, could be often.
ARD can have issues depending on your home setup. Because of my hardware at home and Comcast as my provider, I can only reach the machine that my router has to spoof in order to be able to even be online. -

I tried to find information about C4C and Lotus Notes integration for service users without success. User manual says on Sales both Outlook and Notes, but in Service only Outlook. Does Lotus Notes add-in work for service users similar than sales users? Is there anywhere demo video for that? The Lotus notes integration currently supports the "Field Service" role in Cloud for Service where you are primarily servicing customers in the the field and have direct email communications with your customers. In this use-case, similar to "Field Sales" (AKA SFA Users) in Cloud for Sales, you can receive an email from a customer, get information about that customer from Cloud for Customer via the Lotus Integration, and be able to upload that email into Cloud for Customer as an email activity to track the email correspondence between the user and the customer.
However, the Lotus notes integration does not support the "Call Center" role in Cloud for Service where you are a contact center agent in a centralized service center processing emails that are routed into a common inbox and all correspondence is sent out in behalf of a central inbox such as [email protected] In this usecase all emails automatically create tickets and all emails both inbound and outbound are automatically recorded as email activities without customer or user intervention. The email client for this usecase is either a C4C email client or Windows Outlook Client as you found in the documentation.

Help needed with Custom Web ADI Integrator for Mail Merge
Hello,
I've created a custom web adi integrator to generate letters to advise of end of probationary periods.
The problem is that at the end of the process when the letter is opened in Word 2007, it only displays one record, and does not allow me to "preview results" and cycle through the records (this part is greyed out). It appears that the letter is not merged with the data spreadsheet although it does display one record from it.
Our EBS version is 12.1.3 and we are using Office 2007.
These are the steps I have followed so far (in brief):
- Create a view to provide data (names, addresses etc).
- Set up a new custom function (similar to seeded function HR Integrator Setup).
- Add the custom function and other functions to Desktop Integration responsibility.
- Add the relevant functions to end user's responsibility menu.
- Add new category "other" to HR_ADI_DOCUMENT_TYPE lookup.
- Create Download Excel Integrator by choosing Desktop Integration -> HR Integrator Setup. Enter "PER" for application and my view for the View Name. Upload.
- Create another Excel document by choosing Desktop Integration -> HR Maintain Form Function Associations, and choose the integrator created above. Enter my custom function name in the generated spreadsheet and upload.
- Define a layout for the new integrator.
- Run the integrator under the end user responsibility and save the resulting spreadsheet, which is full of data as expected.
- Create the letter in Word, using the saved spreadsheet as the data source for the merge. At this point the merge is successful.
- Go to Desktop Integration -> Document Management and upload the Word mail merge document. Associate it with the custom document type created earlier.
- Link this document to my integrator.
- Go in as end user responsibility and run the integrator.
At this point after enabling macros it loads 2 spreadsheets (one full of data) and the Word document, but the Word document only displays one record (approx the 10th in the list - there are about 100 in total). All of the relevant merge-related menu items on the "Mailings" tab are greyed out.
Can anyone offer any pointers please?
I did wonder whether it mattered if I changed the names of documents, e.g when I download and save the resulting spreadsheet full of data which I then use to merge to in the Word Doc, is it OK to call the spreadsheet anything or should it be left as the default name?

a. HR Integrator Setup
b. HR Maintain Integrator Form Functions

d. HR ADI Document Overwrite Page
e. HR ADI Document Upload Page
f. The custom function created in previous step ("NTC_HR_LETTERS")
WITH PROMPT
g. HR ADI Document Management Page
- Add the relevant functions to end user's responsibility menu.
System Administrator -> Application -> Menu. Query back menu attached to custom responsibility of end user that will perform the action once set up.
Add the following:
a. The custom function "NTC_HR_LETTERS" as created previously (without prompt)
b. Desktop Integration - Create Document (With Prompt. This function will be used to generate letters)
- Add new category "other" to HR_ADI_DOCUMENT_TYPE lookup.
SA_Application Developer -> Application -> Lookups -> Common. Query back Type = HR_ADI_DOCUMENT_TYPE and add a new entry entitled "Other". This document type is later assigned to the Word document I upload and link to the integrator.

NetworkManager applet doesn't prompt for VPN secret for non-root user
I'm using NetworkManager in GNOME DE. When logged in as non-root user, I'm unable to connect to a vpnc profile.
* As non-root, I am able to add/remove/alter/connect to WiFi network profiles with no trouble.
* As non-root, I am also able to add/remove/alter vpnc profiles.
* However, the VPN group key and VPN user password do not appear to store properly when adding/editing the profile as non-root. I can enter them, but when I bring the dialog back up, they are always blank. Even so, I can see an entry for vpnc in the Gnome keyring.
* When I slide the on/off switch to try to connect with the vpn profile, there is no prompt for the VPN group key or password. The switch just slides back to Off immediately and I can see the text 'authentication required' flash briefly where it shows the connection status. After that flashes, the connection status is back to 'Not connected'. No error message displays.
* If I sign in as root, there are no problems. The VPN 'secrets' will save properly in the dialog, and also if I leave them blank, I'm prompted for them when I activate the connection.
* Creating the connection as 'root' is not an option, as this doesn't appear in profile list when signing on as non-root.
Any ideas on where to look or what to check? As mentioned above, non-root can maintain WiFi connections through NetworkManager just fine, so the problem appears localized to VPN 'secrets'. Also other applications (i.e. Evolution) have no trouble in dealing with authentication.

My typical/preferred setup for my VPNs is to save the VPN group key, but to be prompted for my VPN user password on each connect. So, this is how I was trying to setup in the applet. Interestingly, I have found that if I save BOTH of the 'secrets' to the keyring, then I can connect!
The behavior is still as above in the dialog -- both secrets are blank if I edit the connection, although they are present in the Gnome keyring. As long as they are BOTH there, I can connect fine. But, if I have either of them set to 'Always Ask', then I am not prompted for them and the connection fails.
Although I can work with this, I would certainly still like to figure out what is going on and fix it, as it does bother me that it works that way:
* Why can't the dialog redisplay my secrets when I edit a connection as non-root?
* Why doesn't Always Ask work to prompt me for secrets when running as non-root?
Any ideas? I've used the Gnome/NetworkManager/vpnc combination on other desktops (this is my first Arch), and I have never seen anything like this.
