Restore/reinstall issue.

on my MDD dual boot 1.25 i had freezes and hangs with the finder
when i booted int os 9.2.2. I tried to boot from Restore Disc 1 of
the originally supplied software set, in order to zero out and reformat
the HD. BTW, i have a single-partition 160g Seagate internal drive.
Tried "Super Duper" and CloneCopy apps to backup the HD contents
to a Firewire drive but it gave error messages - "Can't Copy All Files.."
or whatever. So ultimately i just dragged and dropped the HD contents
to the backup disk with intent to drag it all back onto a reformatted disk.
I was able to erase the machine's internal HD, but when i placed its original contents back on it from the firewire backup drive, got some
odd results. OSX would not appear as an option for startup on the
freshly erased and 'restored' HD...but i did get options for startup off
the system folder on the backup HD and, for System OS 9 FOlder on
the main drive HD.
I really sense there's something screwy with the drive itself and that its not a software issue. I've run the gamut of testing to rule the latter out.
Another strange thing is that I can't get it to boot off System Restore
Disk 1 of the supplied set of Restore disks (not presented as a workable optionn in the Startup Disks menu, and doesn't respond to the "C" key
keyboard command - which is further F-ing up what i thought would be a simple process.
Any ideas? Scrap this HD totally? Don't really know where to go form here. Any idea of where to go from here and after a month of trying to
resolve it on my own without calling Apple, i don't know what's causing
the random flakiness of the System, Finder etc. which is why i wanted to start from scratch, but even that presented errors... (Super Duper for exmaple gave an initial error dialog mesage that it could not copy certain files due to OsX Permissions issues - so i scrapped using that and
tried CarbonCopy... It gave a couple of errors and requests for permission-granted administrator data entry a few times... In the end
I just dediced to drag everything over to the backup drive. Is that a bad practice vs using a dedicated BackUp app?
Thanks again for any and all help you guys might be able to offer..
Tired,
Mike

I'll try to condense...
On my single-partitioned 160G HD in a dual-boot G4,i was
having system freeze/hang-time issues when i booted into
OS 9.
Over the weekend I downloaded the "SuperDuper" back-up app,
and tried to clone everything off the HD to a Firewire drive.
It reported it could not copy all files, so i just decided
to just manually drag everything off the internal HD to the
FW backup drive.
I then erased the internal HD, then dragged everything back onto it. Upon restarting from that drive with the System 9 folder as startup disk, it was fine, and the Finder glitch
was eliminated. That much was accomplished.
However, when I chose OSX Sys(10.3.9) as my startup disk
and restarted, I got a static Apple screen (no startup -
just frozen with the Apple - yknow, before the progress
'gear spinning' icon appears.
So now it seems I have an OSX problem and can't boot from
the X System folder.
Sorry but that's as short as I can make this explanation.
I have ordered another HD (Seagate 160G). I figure I'll just
install OSX "new" on that drive, and use the existing drive
that now works fine for OS 9 only (i think).
Of course, i would like to know why there's now a problem
booting from the OS 10.3.9 folder, but screw it i guess.
Super Tired of F-ing with it.

  • How to restore/reinstall new imac

Hi folks. I just bought a 4 month old iMac 21.5 500GB model and yeah, I'm blown away. Anyway the thing is that there are a lot of empty folders from previous owner and his name keeps showing up for accounts etc, so I want to wipe the HDD and restore/reinstall the OS X 10.6 and start like new again before I get into having my own stuff on it. I have 2 discs that came with it - Mac OS X Install DVD and iMac Applications Install DVD. What's the process for doing this so that all HIS stuff will be gone forever and it will become MY iMac? Thanks guys.

Wonderful - it's easy to do what you want to accomplish:
Insert the install CD; once the icon shows on the desktop, hold down the C key and choose Restart. It will now boot from the install CD. Once booted, click past the language selection and then go to Utilities (Menu bar), click on Disk Utility, and choose your internal hard drive. Click on Erase - you'll have various choices; I usually go with the 7 x write (it'll write zeroes seven times and nobody will be able to recover anything). Once the erase is done (it will take some time!!), quit Disk Utility and let the installer do its' thing. You will go through the complete install and initial setup, so you can set up your own account, etc. If you have any files, etc. that you want transferred, back them up first - during the setup, the Setup Assistant will start automatically and ask you if you want to transfer anything. If you only have a couple of files, you can also drag 'n drop them later. In any case, the setup will continue and will ask you to insert the second disk. Once all of that is finished, you'll have your own setup and everything from the previous owner will have been deleted.

  • Hi, I want to restore/reinstall my iPhone 4s to the latest IOS

I want to restore/reinstall my iPhone 4s to the latest IOS that i can have pages and stuff to use on my iphone when im away from my laptop.

If you have an iPhone 4s and you are updating, then it won't automatically install Numbers and Pages etc.  You need to update and then install these yourself manually.
The automatic install was only available for the iPhone 5s and 5c at launch if I remember.

  • TS1388 hello..i am getting a screen when i turn my laptop on theta says OSX utilities....restore, reinstall osx  or disk utility....what does this mean

Hello.. I am getting a screen when i turn my laptop on startup says OSX utilities....restore, reinstall osx  or disk utility....what does this mean?

Hi, that sounds like it's booting from a Restore partition, but that is only for 10.7 & up, you list 10.6.8 though.
Anyway, hold alt key at bootup, what boot choices are shown?

  • Snow Leopard Reinstall Issue

So I'm selling my early 2009 Mac Mini (Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, 2GB Ram, 120 GB HD).
First, I backed up and formatted my Macintosh HD, and then I tried to reinstall the OS numerous times. I tried to "Erase and Install" from the Leopard install disk, then "Archive and Install" from the Leopard and install disk, then tried to install from the SL upgrade DVD numerous times, with it finally working on the fourth or so try.
Almost every time it failed, it gave me a different error, or no error at all.
First try (Erase and install from 10.5 disk): Long log file errors
Second try (Archive and install from 1.5 disk): "UNKNOWNINSTALLERROR"
Third try (Install from SL disk (said Upgrade)): Froze (No mouse)
Fourth try (Install from SL disk (said New Install)): Froze (Mouse movement)
Fifth try (Install from SL disk (said New Install)): Froze (Mouse movement)
Sixth try (Install from SL disk (said New Install)): Left it overnight, still was calculating time remaining when i woke up
Seventh try (Install from SL disk (said New Install)): Worked fine
Also, between the fifth and sixth try I tried to restore my computer from a backup, which also froze it.
In order to sell it, I want to leave it at the stage it is at, so that the buyer can register it in his/her name.
Now my questions are: Does this happen sometimes? My uneducated guess is that the 8x Superdrive is too slow to run the installer stable. Is this true? Should I go through the setup, test the Superdrive, then try to reinstall again?
Also, the Superdrive worked for everything else before I tried this.

First thing to do is boot the computer with the Leopard install disc into the Apple Hardware Test program (holding down the D key) and run the extended tests at least twice. I suspect a hardware issue.

  • Iq500 reinstall issue

    Touchsmart iQ500. Windows Vista 64bit
My Touchsmart iQ500 HD crashed. I have replaced drive with a WD Caviar Green 1TB SATA.
Having received a set of reinstall disks from HP Support I'm now having issues with the install, the supplementary disk is failing to install, plenty of noise from the CD drive attempting to read but no go, I have received a second set of disks as the first were scratched badly which I believed was the issue, it wasn't, same problem of disk attempting to read, lots of noice from the CD drive, but not installing, just hanging.
Anyone have any ideas, first disk of the install runs fine, what other options are there? After a month since the crash just want to get back up and running again.
I have yet to recover the original HD which I hope to sort at a later date.
    Thanks

Make sure you have nothing in the USB ports other than keyboard and mouse, and make sure you're not connected to the network when restoring.
If the unit is being picky about the DVDs try copying them on to a DVD-R on another machine and using the copies for the Recovery, however you may just want to grab a cheap portable USB DVD reader to use for this if it looks like the DVD in the unit is sick.

  • Locked Out of HD After Time Machine Restore Compatibility Issue related to OS

AppleStore installed new HD onto my computer.  Unbeknownst to me they put on Snow Leopard.  Upon bootup at home I selected the "restore from time machine backup" option.  After 4 hours, computer rebooted with all of my logins.  Looks good, right?!
Passwords are ignored.  Apparently, the issue relates to the fact that my data back up is based upon my "old" Mountain Lion OS from the previous HD.
Call into Applestore and they were clueless how to resolve and they had me contact AppleCare.  Spoke with tech who ultimately put me on with a "senior tech"  I have a single 10.6 disk as well as a single 10.6.2 disk.  I think the HD is running 10.6.7or 10.6.8.  I do NOT have a bootable disk (only the single install).  She was stumped, put me on hold for atleast 10 minutes when the line went dead.  (She verified my return number twice).  I haven't heard back and am very frustrated.
I feel like I'm in an Apple Catch-22.
    Please, any advice?

Follow these instructions for reinstall 10.6, you will need to erase the ENTIRE drive by selecting the drive makers name and size on the left while booted from the 10.6 disk that came with your machine as this is the machine specific version with your free iLife included.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If you use the white 10.6 disk, (it's 10.6.3) then that doesn't have the free iLife, but if you later purchased it from AppStore it can be redownloaded when you get to 10.8 again.
(ideally that older machine should stick with 10.6.8, but you have your files already in 10.8 on the TM drive, so...)
Make sure you erase the entire drive with the Security Erase Zero All Data option, this will "pre-map" off any potentially failing sectors on the drive before they fail with your data on it, it makes your machine a lot more reliable.
Reducing bad sectors effect on hard drives
Once that's all done, log in and setup with your same user name as before (important) and Software Update to 10.6.8, log into AppStore and hold the option key down and click on Purchases, redownload 10.8 and install.
Revisit and redownload other software like iLife etc.
Use the TM drive to bring back copies of your files into their respective folders.
Reboot the Mac holding the command and r keys down, use Terminal and enter resetpassword, a window appears, select your boot volume and user, then reset ACL's, should fix your user permissions issue.
Note: What the AppleStore should have done is installed the 10.8 Recovery HD on your new drive, then you could have just reinstalled 10.8 from that.

  • TS1702 Over 90 apps bought from Apple store recently all stopped producing sound - have called apple, tried reset, restore, reinstall without any success. These apps were all kids apps. The IPad otherwise seems working ok such as YouTube has the sound sti

Kids' apps bought from IPad , including some free ones to try out, all lost sound recently. These worked fine before since We got them. Couldn't work out the reasons. We have tried reset, restore the IPad and reinstalled these apps but still without success in solving the sound issue. We tried YouTube to see if the sound issue is ipad issue and it youtube works fine and it has sound.
We also doubt it could be the apps issue. because If it is only  a few apps lost the sound, it seems maybe it is the relevant apps issue. But when there are so many apps all lost sound, it seems to indicate a problem other than just individual apps. What could it be? Please share your experience and way to solve it if you can. Much appreciated.

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the Music and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad above the volume switch, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • Reinstall Issue

    Hello,
I am having extremely sluggish problems with Photoshop Elements 8, yet everything's fine with Premiere Elements 8.
I recently reinstalled Windows 7 on my computer (Dell XPS), then I reinstalled the Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements programs using the disks that came with the computer.  (I bought these two programs when I bought the computer, and these two programs came already-installed on the computer. It also included a disc for each for purposes of reinstall.)
When I open Photoshop Elements 8, the program opens, but even without doing anything, the computer pauses to "load" every few seconds, and for approx a 5 second duration (ie, the mouse icon changes to windows 7's loading icon, which for me is that blue circle that 'spins') When I try to perform actions, I have the same problem and actions take drastically long to execute or the actions just don't register.
I also uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop Elements, but the problem persisted.
As I mentioned, PREMIERE elements works just fine, as I spent a couple of hours editing video and had none of these slowdown issues.
I'm very frustrated and help would be extremely appreciated.  Thank you.

If you did an Archive and Install, it left a previous system folder. Once you have run the new system long enough to know you have everything you need, you can delete that folder, to free up some disk space.

  • SCCM 2012 SP1 - SUP role removal or reinstall issue resolution

    Hello all,
I just want to share a fix regarding SUP removal (re-install) issue.
I think I found a bug  regarding SUP role removal/re-install.
When I try to re-install secondary SUP on a site system, when I remove SUP via AdminUI – Administration – Site - Site Systems, it gets removed from the list but I get the following errors, which makes (re-)installation fail.

In fact, the registry is under

When I trigger uninstall via AdminUI, it failed to remove, thus it think that it is already there when I try to re-install it.
The fix was to manually remove HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\Components\SMS_EXECUTIVE\Threads\

Yes!!!  this worked for me.  I have SCCM set up with a number of untrusted forests with a firewall in between my SCCM servers and the untrusted forests.  The firewall went down and half of my site servers in the untrusted forests were giving
the "operating system reported error 997: Overlapped I/O operation is in progress" on a number of their components. Finally found this, deleted the reg keys under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\Components\SMS_EXECUTIVE\Threads"
and that allows SCCM to reinstall.

    Hello Nokia hello all,
I have an issue in my N86; after a simple restart I got memory crroupted in E:/ and external memory. and the phone doesnot working properly. I did hard reset according to the available instructions but it does not change anything.
currently I caanot store anything in the E:/ drive because I lost it after a few days, and also the external memory is crroupted and does not open.
    please your urgent help.
     best regards,
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Have you checked whether Nokia Suite upon PC gives you the option to re-install existing device software?
When you say "hard reset" was this *#7370# followed by 12345 (default Nokia lock code unless altered by user) or three key depressed power on reset until Nokia "Shaking hands" logo appeared?
As your N86 supports UDP = User Data Preservation you haven't restored possibly corrupt settings?

  • Help! Having reinstall issues

I have a 2011 iMac that I purchased in May and was trying to sell it. I have a buyer and I went to restore the computer; I looked it up on the internet and it seemed to be pretty easy to do (this is something I have done with PCs a lot and wasn't an issue). So I put in the install disk held the "c" key down and it booted from the disk. Once here I formatted my hard drive to Mac extended (journaled), the default which is what I found needed to be done. After that I continued to install OS X Snow Leopard; the install screen would tell me it takes about 35 minutes. The install would get about 5 minutes in and say installation failed due to inability to copy necessary install files. I tried this multiple times and even had a friend bring his iMac restore disk in the event mine was bad; his failed also. Does anyone have any advice on how to get this Mac running again? It seems like this shouldn't be that big of a problem, but I would appreciate any help..
    Thanks!

Found an answer, I had upgraded my RAM to 12 Gb (two 4Gbs) from the factory 2x 2Gb sticks. I took out my 2x 4Gb and it is installing fine now!!

  • Photoshop Elements 9/Windows 7 -Reinstall Issues

Trying to reinstall Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 on a new PC.  Old PC had hardware issues.  I receive this error message - Either Adobe Premier Elements 9 is not installed on the system or has corrupted.  So please install Adobe PRemiere Elements 9 and then retry.  Since Adobe is not yet installed on the new PC and I'm installed from the original CD ( I purchased) the error message doesn't make sense.  Do I need a new license key?

Presumably this is a PRE+PSE bundle with install-media for both products.
It is saying you need to install Premier Elements 9 before installing the PRE9 content.
What happens if you install PRE9, first, rather than PSE9?
