Restoring and recovering and encrypted backup.
Hi,
I'm in the early stages of implementing encryption of RMAN backups using the Oracle Wallet to store the key.
I don't yet have a box to test the restore on but thought I see if anyone has any experience they can share of restoring and recovering encrypted backups?
Some questions I have include at what point does the wallet have to be opened during the restore? Is the wallet opened at the NOMOUNT step by the instance?
Thanks in advance,
Hi,
Before dropping a DB we had taken an RMAN backup.I hope you were in mount mode.
Will RMAN automatically recognize the FORMAT of the backup piece and restore ?No it won't.
First you have to restore a controlfile in nomount mode with:
restore controlfile from '/u04/backup/rmanbkp /02mo9fnc_1_1';
and do alter database mount.
Than you have to run "catalog start with '/u04/backup/rmanbkp'; " so the instance now knows where to find the pieces.
Now you can run a restore database command.
Than open the database with resetlogs.

Tycho

I've just used an external drive to back up my Mac with Time Machine. I have Lion, but didn't click and check the "Encrypt Backup Disc". What should I do? Can I delete the external drive and start again, or can I encrypt later?
I guess if stolen or lost it would protect my "stuff", and if I'm travelling would protect my privacy.
You must understand the purpose and implications of encryption before deciding whether to use it.
Encryption locks your data with a password. If you forget that password, the data is lost beyond any chance of recovery. Neither Apple nor anyone else will be able to help you recover that data if you don't know the password.
By the same token, the password must be strong enough to provide the security you want. For example, if you're the potential target of industrial espionage by a government or large corporation, you need the strongest possible password. To create and manage such a password safely is a task in itself, not to be undertaken lightly.
If you're only concerned about casual snooping by someone with no special skill, a weak, easily-remembered password is appropriate.
But regardless of the strength of the password, if you lose it, the data is gone forever.
Another point to remember is that if you encrypt your data on one storage device, you must also encrypt it on all other storage devices that would be accessible to the same attacker. Otherwise the data isn't protected. For example, if you keep your computer and your backup drive in the same room, and the internal drive of the computer is not encrypted, then there's no point in encrypting the backup drive. -
HT1766 how to recover my encrypted backup password
how to recover my encrypted backup password
There's no way to recover a password if you forget. If you are using a Mac and you have enabled Keychain to store your password backup, you can use it.
Otherwise, you can still do backups but to restore from backup you need the password.
Warning: If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you forget the password, you can continue to back up and use the device, however you will not be able to restore the encrypted backup to any device without the password. You do not need to enter the password for your backup each time you back up or sync.
If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore, choose set up as a new device. -

GTX 560 ti - Display driver stopped responding and recovered (and more)
Hello.
I bought a GTX 560 ti 2 days ago. I installed the latest drivers (301.42) and first my screen went black while i was doing literally nothing, just staring at the desktop, then i got the error on the title. From what i read on the internet the latest drivers had some problems. So i've decided to downgrade them to 296.10. First it looked fine. But when i play Diablo 3 i'm having serious issues like Screen Tearing and Crashes. Also while i'm just browsing the web black screen and the error pops up every now and then. I even got a blue error screen twice.
I checked the temperatures via HWMonitor and they all seem fine (GPU heat around 58-62 celcius, CPU heat around 50-54 celcius).
I also tried updating bios and it didn't work either.
I don't know what else i can do. I'm not a computer whiz, that's why i'm looking for a help desperately.
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA 990XA-UD3
Memory: High Level 2 sticks 4GB each
Video Card: MSI GTX 560 ti
OS: Windows 7 64 bittest the video card in another computer

Please help. I simply connected my iPhone 4s to my Dell laptop (Win 8) which connected to iTunes automatically (which it normally does) and was told that I needed to update my software (I believe for both iPhone OS and iTunes). I tried to update and now my iPhone won't work at all. I just keep going in circles trying to restore and recover and I keep getting the error message: The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14). All I see on my iPhone 4s screen is a cable connector, a little up arrow, and an iTunes symbol--and nothing else works.

Unable to restore and recover my Database from RMAN Backup
Dear All,
Iam practicing RMAN in Windows environment.
My configurations are
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1; # default
CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON; # default
CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON; # default
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 'F:\Backup\%F'; # default
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET; # default
CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION FOR DATABASE OFF; # default
CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION ALGORITHM 'AES128'; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO NONE; # default
CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO 'E:\ORACLE\DATABASE\SNCFORCL.ORA';
CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT 'F:\Backup\%U.bak';
Then i took the RMAN backup, now iam shutdown my DB and removed one logfile..
then i tried to startup the DB but it is saying
ORA-00313: open failed for members of log group 3 of thread 1
ORA-00312: online log 3 thread 1: 'E:\ORADATA\ORCL\REDO03.LOG'
So i tried to restore the Database with my rman backup
RMAN> restore database;
But i am unable to restore my logfile in the Datafiles location where as all other datafiles are restored but redo logfiles are not restored.
So, i am unable to recover my DB
Please tell me whether i am doing any mistake, what is the solution for my problem.
Thanks in advance
MahiAll you restored was your datafiles.
Now issue recover database and that will apply the archive logs.
This is in the oracle documentation.
"You must restore backups of these archived logs for recovery to proceed. You can restore either to the default or nondefault location. If you do not have backups, then you must performing incomplete recovery up to an SCN before the first missing redo log and open RESETLOGS."
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28270/osrecvry.htm
In this case after issuing restore database in RMAN, then issue this.
"Recover database"
It will then be an incomplete recovery. They should have been multiplexed. Did you restore your controlfile with this backup? You may have to issue an "Alter database open resetlogs;" -
iTunes shows I have an encrypted backup under preferences. It's got the pad lock. When I click restore the encrypted backup is not an option. I've been test MDM products and may have caused this. How do I restore the encrypted backup.
I just came here today to ask the same question.
I have an iPod Gen2 with version 4.2.1 iOS, and iTunes 11.0.2.26
My iPod Touch was running sluggish so I backed up and selected the "Encrypt local backup" to "back up account passwords used on my iPod".
I selected a password for this backup and restored my iPod Touch.
When I went to restore from backup, that encrypted backup is not available on the drop down list.
However, if I go to the top of ITunes and click "Edit", "Preferences" "Device", it shows the back up with the pad lock on it.
I thought I was being smart backing up with encryption to back up account passwords, but now I have lost everything.
So many people have the issue where it asks for a password when they never told iTunes to do an encrypted backup and here we are with an encrypted backup, and we know the password, but we don't get the option to restore from it. -
I Did encrypted backup to my iphone to save passowrds and all things on itunes and i forgot it now and tried everything I could remember and can't remember the password. Now I wanna backup my iphone again on icloud if I backed up my iphone and need to restore from icloud backup again is it will ask for the same forgotten password ?
Thanks Brett L,
Thanks for your reply. I'll read this article and I wish it helps. Have a good day too Brett L. Another question please when we backup to itunes its approximately (12 GB my backup) and in restoring apps downloaded back from computer but in icloud its only 5 GB I have so this apps will be downloaded from beginning but with my data right ? Which means in this case it will not difference which backup I do cause in two cases i'll have what i need, is this right ?
Many Thanks, Brett L.

how do i get the encrypt iphone backup password??
Tips here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5162
If the backup you're trying to restore from is encrypted, you will not be able to use that backup if you can't remember the encrypted backup passcode.
If on a Mac, & you elected to save the passcode to your Keychain, you can recover the passcode from your Keychain. Otherwise, your backup data is unrecoverable.
While you can continue to sync/backup, if you can't remember it & want to remove it, you'll have to delete your existing backups, & restore your phone as a new device. Your data will be unrecoverable.
You delete your existing backups here: iTunes>Preferences>Devices. -

If you don't remember the password, you won't be able to recover anything from that backup.
See this Apple doc -> iTunes: About iOS backups

I want to restore my iPhone to the backup that I did just before upgrading to iOS6. When I try to pull up old backups, I only see one from this morning and an old one from May 2012 when I still had my iPhone 3GS. I have not been using iCloud since it was set up improperly when I first switched to the 4S, the contacts weren't being synced AT ALL. visited the genius bar, they said I need a whole other appointment to visit them and solve that, I haven't had a chance to do that yet. Thus, I am backing up to iTunes.
This morning's sync/backup resulted in me losing most of my contacts, and for the contacts that remain, 99% of the phone numbers are gone. I can recover my calendar entries from this past week, but I don't know how I can recover all of them from my May 2012 backup.
Since I had a backup just last week, I'd like to just go back to it. But how? Or, is there another way to get my contacts restored? And why did they disappear? Error in Check DB after RESTORE and RECOVER
Hi Team,
System was partially restored and recovered due hardware failure.
We had 3 file systems that had to be restored and in one of them we has "/oracle/BWP/sapdata8/temp_2/temp.data2" data file.
After the restore and recovery , the system was up.When ran check DB , the get the below error message and when i checked in DB02 , everytime when trying to see the datafile inside PSAPTEMP , there is a short dump with the same error message listed below.
Database error text........: "ORA-01157: cannot identify/lock data file 256 -
see DBWR trace file#ORA-01110: data file 256:
'/oracle/BWP/sapdata8/temp_2/temp.data2'"
When checked the restore , looks like "oracle/BWP/sapdata8/temp_2/temp.data2'" was not restored.
Kindly help to check how to correct this error. Even my online backup's are failing.Hello Priyanka,
how did you restore your database?
The temporary files are not included in a backup, because they are not needed for a recovery - that works as designed.
After the recovery you have to add these files again.
If you would have used brrecover for restoring/recovering your database the temporary files would be added automatically.
Check the documentation here:
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/6e/4c37b85dc7f24d88f177396dc45645/content.htm
Now you have to do this manually like this:
shell> sqlplus / as sysdba
SQL> ALTER TABLESPACE PSAPTEMP ADD TEMPFILE '/oracle/BWP/sapdata8/temp_2/temp.data2' REUSE;

Restore and recover Oracle 10g database from tape.
I have a very basic question for restore and recover Oracle 10g database. Our envirnment settings are:
Oracle 10g on Unix, daily database and archivelog backup to Vista NetBackup server. Retention policy is 2. Old backup files are copied from NetBackup server to the tape for record keeping.
I want to restore a database to a point in time. Because our retention policy is setup to 2. The backup files I need have been copied to the tape. So I should ask SYSTEM ADMIN to copy the backup files back to NetBackup server disk or I can ask him to copy backup files to the Unix server that host my Oracle 10g database. Then I can use Rman to do restore and recover. Is this doable? I know normal procedure is to copy backup files I need back to NetBackup server disk, not directly back to database server. Please put your comments here as early as better. I do appreciate your kind help.853153 wrote:

Are you using catalog or nocatalog?
If the backup information is out of retention, Catalog them again also in netbackup.
So that you can able to restore database directly without copying those files to host.
