Restoring RMAN cumulative and differential backupsets

Hi all,
I have 2 queries regarding restoring and recovering rman backupsets.
1) i have backup policy for sunday level 0, wednesdays cumulative backup and other days of the week differential backup.Now if my database crashes on friday afternoon.What would be my action plans for restoring and recovering the database with brief steps for the same.
2)Suppose i have retention policy for 2.And i have a backupset which has become obsolate as the result.Is it possible to restore and recover this obsolate backupset?

Step 3: Navigate to the homepage of the version you refuse to mention
Step 4: Look for the Backup and Recovery Manual
Step 5: Consult the Restore and Recovery scenarios in that doc

Suppose I hired you as a DBA. My database crashes. You start visiting Oracle Forums immediately instead of restoring and recovering the database.
In fact you don't seem to have a clue on the process as you think you can recover a backupset.
What should I do?

  • RMAN Cumulative and differential level 1taking too much time

    hi,
    I am attempting to HOT backup my 600 GB database to backup into Tape using NMO 5 EMC Networker 7.6.
    My networker server is on Win Serv 2003.
    My oracle database is on RHEL 4.5 Architecture ia64
    Oracle DB Version 10.2.0.4.0
    Using ASM
    Using EMC Storage as Databse storage
    Using tape backup media type LTO-Ultrium-5
    No of chaneels used same for bothLevel 0 & 1 is 4
    there are 60 Datafiles fior the database
    i am atttempting incremental backup[Hot] backup
    for Incrementa Level 0 is taking 90 Minutes to complete.
    BUT leve1 backup [Both differential and cumulative] are taking almost the same time as taken for Level 0 backup
    almost 80Mins.
    but the backup Set size for Level 0 is almost 500 GB and Sizes for any Level 1 backup not more than 200MB.
    i am confused if both LEVEL 0 AND LEVEL 1 BACKUP should take the same span of time.
    please help to reduce the time to complete the Level 1 backups..

    RMAN incremental level 1 and up will have to verify every block in the data files to identify if any modifications have occurred. The time it takes to complete the incremental backup will depend on how much changed. Are you using the latest patches? There are known bugs that can affect performance problems with RMAN backup and recovery. Otherwise, check the Oracle documentation to troubleshoot RMAN.
    Block change tracking as already mantioned, introduced in 10g, can greatly speed up your incremental level 1 and up backups.
    From what I understand:
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE ENABLE BLOCK CHANGE TRACKING USING FILE '/mydir/rman_change_track.f';
    As soon as block change tracking is enabled, Oracle starts to record every block that updates. The information is stored in a bitmap inside the BCT file. Every incremental backup causes a bitmap swtich in the BCT file.
    If there exists a previous bitmap beside the current bitmap, then an incremental level 1 backup will only backup the blocks according to the current bitmap. Incremental level 1 backups are differential backups by default. If there is no previous bitmap, the RMAN backup will perform a conventional scan of the database as usual.
    The bitmap logic applies also to cumulative level 1 incremental backups, which will use all the bitmaps recorded since the last bitmap switch from a level 0 incremental backup. Due to the limit of 8 bitmaps, a cumulative incremental level 1 backup will have to perform a conventional scan of the database, if you make a level 0 database backup followed by 7 differential incremental backups.

  • RMAN backup and restore for Disaster Recovery

    Hi Guys,
    I am very new to Oracle and have a question about RMAN backup and restore feature. I am simulating a disaster recovery scenario by having two VMs running oracle 11g, say hosta and hostb, hosta is sort of production db and the other a disaster recovery db (one that will be made primary when disaster occurs). My goal is to backup production db using RMAN and restore it on the other machine. For some reason when I restore the db on hostb, the command restores the previous backup but not the most recent one e.g. I took a backup yesterday (09/20) and applied it to the hostb that worked fine, but when I try to apply a fresh backup from today (09/21) it always picks up the old backup. Here's a dump of the screen:

My first backup on Host B is located under ..../restore_db/backupset whereas the subsequent one is under .../restore_db/backupset/backupset2.

  • Restore RMAN backupset on different DB version/Platform/RAC

    Hi Oracle Experts,
    I have taken a RMAN backup on 10.2.0.1 AIX 64bit.
    I have successfully restore the DB using this backupset on another server with same 10.2.0.1 AIX 64 bit.
    I have also successfully restore the DB using this backupset on 10.2.0.2 AIX 64 bit.
    Is it not possible to use this backupset on 11g Redhat 32bit?
    I know there is a RMAN compatilblility metrix, it is in terms of DB version. How about platform?

  • Restore log and differential backups on a Publication database.

    Hi, i have the following issue, i have to restore a log backup and a differential backup in a publication database, the problem is that i want to keep the publications and the subscriptions without recreate the subscriptions.
    So how can i perform this goal :/ is somebody know how can i do that please let me know :D !!! thanks in advance.
    In my case is a merge replication....

    For merge replication you do not need to worry about the log reader agent - in fact there should not be one. Ensure that you use the keep_replication switch when doing the restore.
    Note that for merge replication the subscriber will backfill the publisher with changes in the publisher which are not in the subscriber. After this is done you might want to do a tablediff, but it should not be necessary, depending on how recent your full
    and differential backups were done.

  • RMAN-03008 and ORA-07217 after restore of controlfile, 11.2.0.2

    try to restore backup done with 11.2.0.2
    because upgrade to 11.2.0.3 has problems with workspace manager,
    - done with DBUA - which is a other part of the story.
    OS is SLES11SP1 x86_64
    Here is what happens:

  • RMAN unable to read backupset file during Cloning

    Hi,
    I'm performing cloning operation on windows to windows. On target I have taken backup through rman using recovery catalog. I've taken fresh backup of database along with archivelogs and delete the obsoleted one using rman recovery catalog repository.
    When I connect to Target,Recovery catalog and auxiliary instance after executing some commands RMAN gives error that it is unable to read backupset file. What could be the reason for this. I'm posting the Error Portion of RMAN listing please see it and tell me what could be the reasons as I have taken fresh backups and it seems that it is unable to read that particular backup.

    If your RMAN backup exist on target server path.
    Target Server: C:\Oracle\RMAN_BACKUP\
    Put it on the same location in the auxiliary server.
    Auxiliary Server: C:\Oracle\RMAN_BACKUP\
    During cloning also connect with your recovery catalog as you are using recover catalog for the target server.

  • Restore RMAN from different Database Rman backup

    Hi Everybody
    I am practicing Rman so I have one query that how to restore rman backup from another database.
    For Example :
    1. I have Rman backup of DB1 with level 0 and level 1 cumulative database plus archievelog
    2. I need to import or restore Rman backup of DB1 to another database DB2.
    What is the procedure for doing the above queries. Please anyone one help me out.
    I have using oracle 10g r2 running in windows server 2003.

    These are the steps ; you need to write the appropiate commands for each step: Hope it helps!
    1) Take appropriate RMAN backup of the database db1. Note that you should turn on the CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP configuration so that we have the controlfile backed up after the database backup. When we restore the controlfile on new host from this autobackup piece, it will have the information of the latest backup.
    2) Create a PFILE for the destination database db2 using the database db1
    3) Move the backup pieces and the modified INIT.ORA file to the new host. Starting from 10g it is NO longer compulsory to copy the RMAN backup pieces to exactly the same location on the new host as the production location.
    4) Use the pfile created above to STARTUP NOMOUNT the database on the new host
    5) Now invoke RMAN and restore the controlfile specifying the location where the controlfile autobackup piece is restored on this new server. You can mount the database once the controlfile is restored successfully.
    6) You can skip this step if you have restored the RMAN backup pieces to exactly the same location they were backed up on database db1. If this is not the case then you need to catalog the RMAN backup pieces to make RMAN aware of thier new location on the new host. Note that CATALOG BACKUPPIECE command is available only starting from 10g.
    7) Having determined the point up to which media recovery should run, start the restore/recovery using for example:

  • Restore RMAN backup on new server

    Hi
    I took RMAN backup of a database with control file autobackup on...I copied the backup
    to a new server restored the spfile from the backup and modified the parameters
    bdump,udump,control file because the directory structure is different from the original
    machine.I restored the control file and it was restored properly.
    Now I need to restore the datafiles in the new path so I used set newname and switch
    but I get some error ....I have posted the error please look at it

    Is your UNDOTBS is in FS "/data2/oradata/NUAT/undotbs01.dbf" ? Did you convert this FS to new FS name? First error seems to be issue with this.
    Second issue is seems to be you dont valid backup for the  SCN 714518081. Pls give us the restore script and also check whether you have valid backups.

    I am practicing Oracle Restore scenarios on my Oracle 9i database. Once I complete my tests in Oracle 9i I will move up to 10g and then finally to 11g.
    Following is my recovery scenario:
    1) I did NOT configure Recovery Catalog
    2) I would like to restore my databse from a 15 days old backup
    3) control_file_record_keep_time is set to 7 days.

  • Restoring Rman backup on New Host with different directory structure

    Hi,
    I have a following scenario to clone the database.
    1. clone the database on new server
    2. source is non - ASM and target is ASM
    3. On source incremental level 0 backup taken on disk connecting to catalog, the backup is moved to target host to different directory structure
    4. source is running on 32-bit Linux two node Rac and Target is running on 64-bit Linux two node Rac
    I did the following steps and getting below error:
    1. I copied incremental Level 0 backup to target server(where we need to build new db) to different directory structure
    2. On target i created pfile and build the instance, as dbf file are in multiple locations in source i put following tow parameters in init.ora of target database

  • RMAN CUMULATIVE LEVEL 0 to tape WORKS BUT NOT LEVEL 1 RMAN

    I have this saturation My rman cumulative level 0 to tape works everytime but when I try to do level-1 rman backup it failed and it never works. From the rman log, I posted below, it looks like the MML is having a problem. My question:
    1. IF this is only MML problem. Isn't that both level-0 and level-1 will failed? Why only level-1 is having the MML problem not level-0?
    2. What is RMAN doing different between level-0 and level-1?

    I have a customer where I am supporting a Veritas Netbackup environment and found similar errors on 3 of their oracle databases during backups. The problem is intermittent and if you keep on trying you will get a successful backup. I am not skilled in Oracle and would like some pointers.

  • Cumulative and levels

    Hi,
    I am a bit confused about cumulative and levels. When I backup using RMAN, and specify incremental cumulative with level = 2 every day, am I not backing everything that has changed since level 0 (or a full backup done over weekend) every day?.
    Why should I concern my self with level at all ?. I just want to backup all incremental changes that happened every single day during the week so that I can recover the instance with using two backups. Incremental cumulative means just that right ? Why should I specify level?
    Pls clarify my confusion.

    Cumulative values are those key figures that are cumulated using all characteristics, thus also using time.
    Non-cumulative values are those key figures that are measured in relation to a period in time;  Non-cumulative values are summarized over time using so-called exception aggregation.
    In Inventory, When you initialize the stock by using BX Data source. It will bring the current status of the stock by calculating the past transactions happens in all the storage locations.
    After loading the Data into Cube you compress the cube with Marker update, then system will take a reference point for the marker. Next when you load BF for the historical data, you compress with "No marker update". This may not be necessary in all the cases. If the client requires reporting on the past data you need to extract this. This time you run the info package with init Delta. If historical data is not required you can run the info pack INIT t without Data transfer.
    In the above case you use No marker update, because you have initialized the stock by calculating all the historical data and then you are loading historical data, there would be data mismatch happen to avoid that use no marker so that it will not add to the reference point. Later you can run the delta loads by using BF data source. This time you need to use "Marker update" because all the delta movements are new they should be updated to reference point. Similarly UM also With marker updated  for Price revaluations. Why Reference point: When you use Non Cumulative KF in the Cube, During query execution the data will come from Reference point which is set by marker update

    I have a question.
    In the RMAN documentation (for instance in "Oracle Database Backup and Recovery Advanced User's Guide 10g Release 2") one can find the description / instructions how
    to allocate RMAN channels and define the device types.
    There are 2x described device types - DISK and SBT (Tape).
    My question is:
    IS IT POSSIBLE TO USE A PIPE AS A RMAN DEVICE TYPE ?
    If it is not possible to define direct, perhaps there is a possibility to define it
    indirect and to use a pipe to write data.

    to have as a source a backup of the database and not a running productive
    database.

    I'd like to make a copy of a productive running database, which is placed on ASM
    storage, to another server creating such a way a database also placed on ASM
    storage. I'd like to do it directly. I think the best possible way can be
    RMAN / BACKUP --> PIPE --> RMAN / RESTORE.
    The issue is - how can I configure RMAN to write BACKUP into a PIPE and
    to read data for RESTORE from a PIPE.
    Any ideas?
