  • How do I restrict access to a folder-like attaching a password in order for someone to open it.

    I want to locate a folder on my desktop, but want to restrict access so that anyone on my laptop can't access the folder, even though they will see it sitting on the desktop.  How do I set up folder permissions?

    Any file on YOUR desktop already has permissions set such that no other user account can access. But if you want to use the OS's native capability to encrypt the contents of a folder, place that folder within an encrypted image.
    Use Disk Utility to create a disk image, and encrypt it with the same utility (use settings in "new image") . Make sure you size the image to a size great enough to hold all your files. Once created, and placed on your desktop, open it, using your password. Once the image is mounted, place the files you want to protect into that image, and then dismount/eject the image. The image essentially becomes your password encrypted folder. Double click it at any time to access your files (enter password). Eject the mounted image to "re-encrypt".
    If you want a disk image that has cross platform capability, then try TrueCrypt. It is  great App for Mac & Windows, with other advantages as well.

  • SSH login- how do I restrict access to a shared folder?

    I have created Shares in WGM for SMB and AFP access on my OS X 10.4.8 Server. However when I connect via SSH it's not restricting access to the folder based on the User Name I login with- I see the entire volume! How do I restrict access to a specific folder based on a user name setup in WGM? ACL's?

    Hey George,
    It sounds like you are trying to limit ssh/sftp users to a specific area, aka jails. The FTP server lets you 'chroot' users to a certain area making it appear as the root thus preventing them from navigating up the hierarchy, which is what I think you, and me and many others are trying to accomplish.
    The ssh compiled into OS X is missing this very needed feature. There have been a few documented workarounds, but they've either been too insecure or too clunky for me.
    I've dealt with the fact that my users can get to the root of the hard drive, and have just been very careful about my privileges (by using ACLs), thus preventing them from getting inside areas they shouldn't.
    There's a good write up here: http://www.schwie.com/brad/macosxsftpchroot/ and if you include the term 'chroot' in your searches, you should find a bit about it here too.
    And Roger, I think George meant the file sharing protocol used by ssh. man sftp.

  • Restrict workgroup computers in accessing my shared folder

    How to restrict workgroup computers in accessing my shared folder.
    And only allow a specific system in the workgroup to have full control access to that shared folder.
    Operating System :Windows Server 2003

    Hi Tiju,
    You cannot restrict access to a folder using computer accounts. The access to the share folder can only giving to everyone or local accounts if the network environment is
    Workgroup.
    Because the computer account never tries to access the shared folders. The access attempt is made by the user account; and if the user account isn't in the ACL of the file, he won't get access.

  • How do I restrict access to USB Disk connected to Airport Extreme

    I have attached a USB HDD to my Airport Extreme Base Station. The drive is divided into 4 partitions, which I did with the HDD connected directly to a MBP before plugging into the AEBS. All the Macs on the network seem to be able to read and write into all 4 partitions. Is there anyway to restrict which Macs can access with partition? Or, if I went to a single partition, is there a way to restrict access on a folder by folder basis?
    I've tried searching, but the best answer I've found so far is that the AEBS will only support a single partition/volume.... which doesn't appear to be true anymore.
    Thanks in advance

    You can put a filter on your wifi or use something like the K9 browser.

  • How do you restrict access to custom applications?

    When I create portlets, there is usually an associated "admin" functionality that needs to be created for each custom application. An example is a shopping cart that we just created, we needed admins to be able to go in and upload photos.
    The way that I do this is I create a new portlet "Shopping Cart Admin" and restrict access to it that way. However, because I usually add everything in the /remoteserver/shoppingcart/. folder to the gateway space (its too painful to add one by one), this means that I can't put admin.aspx in that folder. So I usually end up creating a NEW folder /remoteserver/shoppingcartadmin/ for the admin portlet.
    Long story short, its a lot of work. I know that I could try to use activity rights, but those seem very global. How do you control edit access to your custom portlets?

    Well, there are a few different ways to go about it. You could add a preferences page with the admin functionality, and then an admin would just have to click the little pencil in the portlet titlebar. No admin/edit access, no little pencil.
    I have often set the visibility of an ASPX control directly from activity rights, in OnPageLoad, if it isn't postback time. The activity rights should be inherited by the user, through the user's group. Best practise is to create empty groups called Roles, add activity rights to the Roles, and then have the actual groups (that contain users) inherit from one or more Roles.
    You already knew that part, I added it for the others. My personal definition of a portlet is 'polymorphous instance of a web service'.
    So:
    Role: Store Manager (has Edit Shopping Cart activity right)
    ^
    Group: Store Managers (has Store Manager parent group)
    User: Vladimir (inherits Edit Shopping Cart activity right)

  • Lock Box setting does not restrict access

    I have a folder that is set to restrict access - write only mode for everyone - so when my nephews visit, they cannot access my personal files. This is a single user/logon computer. A couple of times now when I click on the "locked" folder in Finder, it opens for full access. The contents of the finder window wiggled back and forth several times and the folder opened. I could also access the folder contents from application. When I did a get info, the settings were still for write only. I backed out of the folder to the desk top and then back to the folder and it behaved properly. Program access was also once more restricted.
    One perhaps unrelated thing. Just before this happened, when I clicked on any application on the dock, I got the appropriate finder window instead of switching to or launching the application. It too now works normally.
    Any ideas?

    Permissions repairs apply only to items that leave receipt information, essentially only items installed by Apple's installer. As far as stated features working correctly, the permissions system is designed around the user account concept. If you are trying to use it otherwise, you will be disappointed. The computer can't possibly know who is using it, only what account is trying to access something.
    Admin users have more privileges than other user accounts. This is necessary to managing the computer. If you want reliable privacy, you must create a less privileged account for others to use; otherwise they will have the same privileges you do. This is no different from leaving your front door unlocked because you want it to function for your convenience.
    Regarding folders with system as owner, none should be in your home directory, nor should you be able to change the owner's permissions to write only, whatever the owner is. You can change the permissions of another user added to the list to write only, or those of a group or others, but the owner must always have read privileges. The Finder should not let you violate this rule.
    Likewise, you should not have any folders with just admin, wheel, & everyone entries in the list. Admin & wheel are both groups (indicated by the two-headed silhouette icon) -- groups cannot be the principle owner (indicated by the one-headed silhouette icon). Missing entries indicate no access privileges for that entity & should never apply to the principle owner.
    One potential source of confusion is that non-owner users added to the permissions list also appear with the single-headed silhouette (these permissions are controlled by ACL entries, not the main owner/group/others settings) & sometimes the list in Get Info is not in strict owner/group/others sequence. There are also some anomalies associated with accounts migrated from Tiger.
    Because of all this, it is best not to trust the Get Info permissions info to give you the full permissions picture. For that, the Terminal is a better tool. You can use the "ls" command with the "-l" option to show expanded preference info, or with the "-l@e" option to show still more, including extended attributes & the ACL. (Note that the "l" character is a lower case ell, not a capital eye or a one.) If necessary, see the Mac OS X Manual Page For ls(1) for more info about how to use the command.

  • Creating a restricted access page.

    I need to create a restricted access page within my website, so that a username and password are required to access. The Dreamweaver instructions ask me to go to the Server Behaviors panel (Window > Server Behaviors), click the plus button and choose User Authentication > Restrict Access To Page.    However, the Server Behaviors panel does not provide me with an available plus button to choose.  What can I do about this?

    CC is the current version of DW. It was released this year and Server Behaviors were removed from it because they are outdated.  Before that was CS6, CS5.5, and CS5.  CS4 was released in Fall of 2008.
    Password Protecting a page or folder on your server can usually be done very quickly through your remote server's Admin or C-Panel.
    Or if your host server is Linux, you could do it with just 2 files:  .htaccess and .htpasswd

  • GPO to prevent users from accessing the root folder of their profile doesn't work

    Hi,
    Here's the scenario:
    In a Windows 2012 RDS I created two groups called RemoteApp users and remote desktop users.
    These groups are defined in the collection for the corresponding RD Session hosts.
    These groups are not included in any other group, but they are located under an OU -called  Remote Users.
    In the domain controller I have created a GPO named "Restrict access to root drive"  which is linked to the Remote Users OU.
    The GPO I selected is - "Prevent users from adding files to the root of their users files folder"
    This doesn't seem to work. I have waited more than a few hours to allow the 90 minutes update, plus used the gpupdate /force
    but when a user clicks on the RemoteApp (Excel in this example) then access to the C: drive (which is the root folder of the user's profile) is enabled, and the user can create folders and save files under C:.
    I tried to run gpresult for the specific user but the GPO I created wasn't mentioned.
    I thought this would be a straight forward mechanism, but somehow it looks like something is missing.
    I have read about loopback and expanding, but not sure if this is what needs to be done, and if yes - I'd appreciate if I can get  step by step instructions. Everything I found so far was VERY vague.
    Thanks !
    One more detail that may be relevant - the DC is a Windows Server 2012, and the session host is a Windows 2012 R2.

    The USER accounts need to be in the OU your GPO is linked to. Despite
    their name, GPOs do NOT apply to groups, but to users (and computers).
    Groups only provide an additional layer of filtering...

  • Restrict Access and Multiple Upload with Insert

    I continue to have problems with using Restrict Access to Folder with Multiple Upload with Insert. When the restrict access is enabled the uploader does not work, when it's removed it works. Any ideas?

    I've found that if I have a page that displays the kt_login_id, login and then go to that page it doesn't display the login ID. Then if I add the multiple image uploader w/ DB insert and reload the page the login ID is displayed and the uploader works, however, if I set an uploader field to the login ID it inserts and uploads everything but the login id. I thought this might have to do with the fact the the 'Restrict Access to Page' is not on the page yet. When I add it the uploader and insert stops working. I've placed the 'Restrict Access to Page' code in every possible place in the code (above the head) and the only place where the uploader/insert works is when the resrtict code is after the uploader code. But then again the login id does not get inserted. Please someone help.

  • Restrict Access Not working

    I have 3 folders - Admin, Private, Public
    I have 3 values for Permissions 1=Admin, 2=Private, 3=Public
    I have an automatic redirect when a user logins in
    ie. a privater user logins in and is redirected to /private/index.php
    Which works great, now i placed a restrict access folder behavior to the private folder and only selected 2 for the permission (private access). Now when the private user logins in and is redirected to /private/index.php it says access denied please login.
    Why is it not allowing that person to get to that page. Ive checked the /private/index.php page and it says:
    //Start Restrict Access To Page
    $restrict = new tNG_RestrictAccess($conn_portersonline, "../../");
    //Grand Levels: Level
    $restrict->addLevel("1");
    $restrict->addLevel("2");
    $restrict->Execute();
    Anybody have any ideas???

  • Access to Guest Folder requires login when accessed from Portal/SSO

    We have wired XML-P to use OID and then registered it as a Partner Application in our Portal/SSO server (which also uses the same OID instance). All works well except now when we try to access the Guest folder from within Portal the SSO login screen pops-up. We have created a very simple HTML/URL portlet that points to the Guest folder and the idea is for users to have Public/anonymous access to this folder. Any ideas?

    Hi,
    You can try to enable "Turn on password protected sharing" in Network Sharing Center. After that, only people with a user name and password on the computer will be able to log into shared network folders.
    Another workaround method you can try:
    Open Run, type rundll32.exe keymgr.dll, KRShowKeyMgr, then Press
    Enter.
    In the prompt dialog, choose and delete the user account used to network sharing.
