Restricting application of Digital Signatures

Hello,
I am trying to determine what options are available natively in Acrobat for restricting the type of certificate that is used for applying a digital signature.  As far as I can tell, Acrobat, by default, seems to allow the use of any certificate which has the "Digital Signature" extension.  This has the potential to create large problems in a regulated environment.
In my organization, our users receive multiple certificates for different applications.  For instance, a user may have a certificate for VPN access, one for SMIME email and finally, one that is specifically for applying eSignatures.  There is a more robust vetting process for obtaining an eSignature certificate, and it also prompts for a passphrase each time the private key is accessed.  Each type of certificate comes from a separate CA.
We've configured the Trusted Identities in each user's Acrobat by deploying an addressbook file to them.  We've only defined our eSignature CA as a trusted CA in Acrobat (along with some other universally trusted authorities).  The result is that when a signature that has been applied using any other CA, Acrobat will not verify the signature.  This is good, but it is not good enough since the dynamic images that come with Acrobat digital signatures do not appear on printed or flattened documents.
Basically, I'm trying to determine whether there is a way to configure Acrobat (natively, out-of-the-box) such that it will only allow application of digital signatures using certificates that are issued from a CA that is defined as a Trusted Identity.
Has anyone encountered this before?

Hi Mike,
The short answer is yes, you can restrict signing to a certain type of certificate. However, you do need to be able to edit each PDF file that needs to be signed.
To expand a bit, the process is know as applying a Seed Value. There are two different types of PDF files and they each have a different method of applying Seed Values. If the PDF is an XML template that was created using LiveCycle Designer, then you can apply the Seed Value to the signature field using the Designer software. On the other hand, if the PDF file is the more ubiquitous AcroForm (e.g. you converted a Word Doc to PDF), then you have to use JavaScript to apply the Seed Value.
Before I get into the specifies of applying a Seed Value, first here is what a Seed Value can do. Among other things, you can use Seed Value to restrict signing to:
a specific user's digital ID
digital IDs issued by a specific CA
a digital ID that has a specific key usage value (it sounds like this is what you are looking for)
If you need to use JavaScript you are doing to want to review the published JavaScript guide. You can find the guide online at http://livedocs.adobe.com/acrobat_sdk/9.1/Acrobat9_1_HTMLHelp/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhel p.htm?href=JS_API_AcroJSPreface.87.1.html#1515775&accessible=true and search search for Seed Value. More specifically, you are looking for the JavaScript call signatureSetSeedValue and the section (about half way down the page) CertificateSpecifier Object. At the bottom of the page are examples of how to set the certspec object.
If you are using LiveCycle Designer you need to display the Object pallet. Select the Window > Object menu item to get the Object pallet to display. Then, select the signature field that you want to apply the Seed Value to, select the Signature tab in the Object pallet, and then click the Settings button. This is the dialog you use to apply the Seed Value.
Good luck and let me know if you need more help,
Steve

  • Language of Digital Signature screen

I have searched the forums and elsewhere and I can't find any additional information on this so I thought I would post it here.
We have french Windows 2000 workstations that have a french JRE 1.5.0_06-b05. When they launch an application that has a digital signature, they get a popup warning screen that is half in French and half in English. The title bar is french (Avertissement - Scurit) then it asks in English "The application's digital signature has been verified. Do you want to run the application". Then it displays the name, who signed it etc in French. The option to always trust the signer is in french and the buttons are in French. Then it says in English "The digital signature has been validated by a trusted source" and a button in French offering more information.
Anyone ever seen this type of thing? Is this just bad language support or something wrong on my end?
    thanks for any advice
    Arend

    Hi Matthias,
The short answer is you can't, and here is why. What you see in the signature field is not the actual signature, but rather a representation of the actual signature. The signature proper is a cryptographic blob of data embedded in the PDF file. The way Acrobat/Reader works is it creates the signature appearance prior to actually signing the file. The signature boils down to a signed portion of the file being digested and the subsequent digest being encrypted with the signer's private key. Because the appearance is part of the digest, if it were to change it would have the end effect of modifying the digest and thus invalidating the signature.
Where the text in the signature field might say "digital signiert von" (I'm not sure if this is the correct string we are using) it cannot be changed to "digitally signed by" just because the file was opened on an English based system. The contents signature field must remain as the signer intended.

  • Java 1.6.0.24 deployment - Digital signature Issues

    Hi,
    We're deploying Java Sun 1.6.0.24 for 500 end-users.
    We've followed Note 290807.1.
1 Instance is working with Java Sun :
    - Instance A : Java Sun 1.6.0.24
    We did the following :
    1) Enter 1st time in Instance A : Java Sun 1.6.0.24 Installed (silent mode installation)
    3) We're receiving the following Message : "The application's digital signature cannot be verified. Do you want to run the application ?" (see attached file)
-> Due to deployment for 500 Users , we would like to avoid this message during silent installation of Java 1.6.0.24.

You will get this message only first time you access the application, so you could simply train your users to tick "Always trust content from this publisher" option and click on Run.
    Thanks,

  • How do I create a digital signature to use when filling out applications online?

The application is asking me to add or create a digital ID to sign and encrypt documents. The certificate that comes with your digital ID is sent to others so that they can verify your signature.
I have four options: Browse for an existing digital ID file
Configure a roaming ID for use on this computer
Create a self-signed digital ID for use with Acrobat
Look for newly inserted hardware tokens

Formscentral does not support forms with digital signature workflows. I suggest you see if our Echosign product meets your needs.

  • Restrict printing of a form with digital signatures

I hope this isn't a duplicate question...  Please forgive me if it is; I did search the forums first.
I have a form that requires a digital signature from several people as it gets emailed from one person to the next.  Unfortunately, some of the people can't grasp the concept of digitally signing the form, therefore they print the form, sign it with a pen, scan it, and email it. (Very frustrating...)
Is there a way to prevent them from printing the form while still allowing me to print it once I receive it. I'm the last person in the signing chain and need the ability to print a hard copy listing all the digital signatures.
Thank  you so much for the advice! I really appreciate it!
    Heath

    Hi Heath,
Yes it can be done, and it's not that hard to do, but I am going to get a bit techno-geeky here. In the Acrobat world you can sign an encrypted form, but you cannot encrypt (or change the encryption of) a signed form. You can solve the problem by encrypting the form (most likely you'd use password security because it's the simplest).
First a word about PDF file encryption. Using file encryption gives you two things, control over who can open the file and the ability to restrict what they can do with the file once they get it opened (such as print). You are going to want to encrypt the form before anyone signs allowing all but printing to occur. Then when the users open the form they can fill out form fields and sign the file (at it's heart digitally signing a PDF file is just a special type of form fill-in), but they will not be able to print the file.
Here's is where things get a bit geeky. The key is when you encrypt the file (assuming you are using Password Security) you need to apply both a Document Open Password and a Permissions Password. Would it be simpler if there was no Document Open Password, yes it would, but then you wouldn't be able to print the form either. By using a Document Open Password when anyone (including yourself at the end of the signing work-flow) tries to open the file they will see this dialog:
You will supply all of the end-users that you want to sign the file the Document Open Password. Once the file is opened the Print functionality will be disabled so all they will be able to do is fill it out and send it back via e-mail (or a Submit button is you added one to the file). Eventually the file will get back to you, but when you open the file (and get the dialog above) you'll type in the Permissions Password. That tells Acrobat that you are the "document owner" and it raises the permission set to "allow all", and thus you will be able to print out the file. As long as you only share the Document Open Password and keep the Permissions Password to yourself no one else will be able to print but you.
Could this work with Certificate Security or Rights Management Security, yes it could, The steps would be different, but the outcome the same. Since I'm guessing that you'll use Password Security here's what you'll want to do:
    Open the unsigned file
Select the File > Properties menu item
Select the Security tab on the Document Properties dialog
Select Password Security from the Security Method drop-down list
Select the Compatibility and Encryption options at the bottom of the dialog (I suggesting that you do this first because if you change them you may need to reenter the passwords again)
Select the Require a password to open the document checkbox
    Enter the Document Open Password
Select the Restrict editing and printing of the document checkbox
In Printing Allowed drop-down leave it set to None
In Changes Allowed drop-down select Filling in form fields and sign existing signature fields
Select the Copy checkbox at your discretion
Enter the Change Permissions Password (it must be different then the Document Open Password)
    Click the OK button
    Confirm both Passwords
Click the OK button on the Document Properties dialog
Save the file to apply security
Now, when you reopen the file, if you use the Document Open Password printing will be disabled, but if you use the Permissions Password printing will be enabled.
You can also simplify this if you use the Tools > Protection panel, but I don't want to dump too much on you at once.
    Good luck,
    Steve

  • Including digital signature in any application/transaction!

    Hello,
i try to include the digital signature functionalty into a non predefined application. For example in co11n.
I read "700495" and the included implemetation guide!
Has somebody any further information to implement this functionality into an existing programm/ta?
Some further information about the interface DS_API in package DS would be helpful too!
    I hope for help!
    Thank You!

Again, without an explanation of the benefit or benefits you are trying to gain, it is really hard to to suggest an approach. "Digital signature" can mean a lot of different things to different people, depending on what you are trying to accomplish.
It could be as simple as adding a signature column to the table and having a BEFORE INSERT OR UPDATE trigger that called dbms_obfuscation_toolkit.md5 to generate an MD5 hash of the data. This wouldn't do anything to ensure that the data hadn't been modified, however, since the signature would simply be recalculated every time. It would, however, allow you to verify that the data didn't suffer a "bit hit" in transit after the signature was applied.
Depending on your goals, solutions can get significantly more complicated from there. How complicated, again, really depends on the particulars of your requirements. Particularly, I would be interested in what benefits you would want from a digital signature approach that you wouldn't get from auditing-- that would give me an idea of the level of complexity you would really need.
Technical people may not be able to decide things like this on our own, but it is our responsibility to let the business know what the most efficient approach to solving their business needs is. If you understand that the business needs to accomplish x, and they have suggested a less efficient way to accomplish that task, it is the technical team's responsibility to go back and explain the options. Business users, in my experience, are generally overjoyed when you come back and say that they can get the functionality they are after at half the cost with minimal development effort.

  • Print-only Policy Restrictions with Digital Signature

I'm trying to lock down all form fields on a PDF document and add a digital signature. Is this possible? I don't see a Document Restrictions option in the drop-down menu that enables Print capability ONLY as a Policy setting. There doesn't seem to be a Security setting which enables me to allow Printing that doesn't also enable field and/or comment editing as well. Is there a way to edit the Registry or some other workaround that facilitates this kind of signing and policy restrictions?
    Thanks for your help!
    System:
    1. Acrobat v.7.1 Professional
    2. Windows XP
    3. Word document converted to PDF
    4. Interactive Form Fields
    5. Digital Signature Field

I think I may have discovered a work-around for this problem. If you Secure (lock) all the interactive fields BEFORE adding your Signature field and signing the document, the changes won't take affect until you save and/or close the document. You can therefore add a signature field (or make any other changes you wish), and subsequently sign the document as long as you haven't saved it. Once you click Sign and Save on the signature pop-up window, the security changes as well as the digital signature will all take affect simultaneously.
    Hope this helps someone!

This is required to avoid paper work of getting the signature and archiving those papers.
Instead , we need to do that online.
Please let me know how it can be done in Oracle Application
    Thanks

    Hi Hussein,
    Thanks for the reply.
I will explain my requirement .
This needs to be implemented in Warehouse.
    Requirement is
Whenever the goods are shipped from warehouse to Stores, a report of items are taken and it is signed by the driver who transports those items.
These are done by taking the printout manually and getting the signature manually.
Because of this archiving becomes very difficult.
