Restricting printing and editing.

When I was the proud owner of Adobe Acrobat 8, it was SO EASY to create my own security policy, which I called "do not edit" and restricted printing and editing, so whenever I created a pdf document I would just click on "security-->do not edit" and acrobat would ask me to set the password, and then saved the document. And that was it. Now I can't seem to find for the life of me a way to create the same kind of security policy.
I tried clicking on "encrypt, manage" and created my own policy but now it asked me to set a password while creating the policy.
So when I click on my policy, it doesn't ask me to set the password. And if I doesn't set a password while creating the policy,every time I click on my policy, I have to set the restrictions (no editing, no printing).
What am I doing wrong? Because either way, when I select "remove security" on a pdf I just secured, it doesn't ask me for the password! WTF!

As you've found, you create a new policy in Acrobat X via Tools Pane > Protection > Encrypt > Manage.
If when you define the policy, you tick the box on the "General settings" step which says "Save passwords with the policy", then you'll be asked to enter one and that will be used every time. If you untick that box, the policy will ask for a new password each time it's used.
If you apply security to a file, but don't close and re-open it, you can remove the protection again without entering anything. That's intentional, in case you make a mistake.

    So I make binders on a regular basis and am just getting into scripts and FileMaker Pro and all sorts of happy things. I was wondering if it was possible to do a list of commands with Automator.
    What I want to do is have Automator run a workflow, but with selected files, not predetermined files. For instance, I do not want to have to go into the workflow and drag and drop the files in every time. I just want to select them and then go to the services option under the Finder menu.
    Then I want to edit them in Preview, but I want the edits to be automatic. Specifically, any PDF file with an odd number of pages gets a blank page inserted at the end and any PDF file with an even numebr of pages does not (this is so that I can do a batch print and do double sided with a printer that cannot do double sided so odd sides first, then even sides).
    Then it should print the batch as a PDF and ask me where to put it, and finally print the PDF it just saved doing odd sides only, then waiting, then even sides only.
    Is this possible with workflow, an dif not what can do this?
    Thank you for any assistance, I can't find anything that will allow for this to go faster unless I write a script that does all this for me, which I might end up doing...as soon as I learn how to.

    What actions are in the in the workflow that did print without the dialog? Since that one worked with a single item, you might try the *Dispense Items Incrementally* action from http://automator.us/leopard/downloads/index.html

  • Error in labview report printing and editing

    Attached is the labview code, excel template and required output excel.
    I have made the excel template by merging certain cells and assigning values.
    Also have defined the names as tables so as to address it in labview report vi's.
    So kindly help me insert values into the template without changing the cell dimensions. (can we keep it fixed ?)

  • I have restricted copy and print on a file, but now i cannot it to attach it to an email

    I have restricted copy and edit on a confidential file i want to email.  However, now i cannot see the file in order to attach it to an email or even by using Finder.  However i can see it on Desktop.  Major problem is now i cannot send the file using Outlook for mac as the file is not visible with the "attach" function

    Try open the document in Acrobat and try to re-save with different name if you have permission to do so.
    Also you may copy the document on thumb drive/ Flash drive and copy over to another machine and try to check the same.

    Only two devices on our plan, so not so much an issue. And I have found myself using it much more than I thought I would when we got them (also first smart phones for both of us). Even got my wife to use hers for checking email while we were out of the country (big step forward for her ). I'm very interested in the ApplePay, but will want to wait a bit before diving into it. And since both phones are still in great working order, will likely wait a bit for the upgrade (sometime next year?). Will depend, I suppose, on the kinds of deals we see and what the plans turn out to be for updating my iPad and getting here one.

    I can't find a way to view and edit the text which appears on the spine of the dustcover or the photo book itself.  When I preview the book it appears on the dustcover and the book, but not when I'm back in the creation or editing windows.  I've printed 4 books in a series and two spines are one font size, and two others are a different font size.  One of the books has a shortened title on the book spine.

    The text on the spine will be the same text that is in the Title text box on the title page.  You can change the font and style of that text just like you change any text in Aperture. Aperture will size and center the spine text for you
    If you want the content or the font and style  of the text to be different from your Title box text then you have to trick the program a bit.  Put the text that you want in the spine into the Title text box and then move that box to a place on the page where it will not be visible when printed ( Y coordinate -1.0 inches for example).  Don't move it too far away or it will be hard to get back to in order to make an edit.    Then make a new text box on the title page and put the text you want on the cover in that.  (Or make a book without text on the cover , but with text on the spine). 
    You are 100% correct in that you can not preview this unless you preview the printed book

    after i load my pics into iphoto, make a album, chose the desired pictures, edit the pictures in the album and then burn it to a cd. I take the cd to say wal-mart to get printed and none of the pictures i edited have kept the changes the print i get back are all from the original?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    How are you burning the disk?
    The correct way is to select the pics in the aiPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export them to a folder on the desktop. Then burn that folder to the CD using the Finder.

  • PDF restricts printing when I only restricted editing

    Hello everyone. I create and sell printable wedding invitation templates that customers can fill in and print at home or at a copy shop. I create the fillable forms in Acrobat. Obviously I don't want people to open the PDFs in Illustrator and edit my artwork, so I password protect my PDFs. The customer can fill in and print, but they cannot copy the images. Here are the settings I use:
    Most customers can print without any problems. However, some customers (about 1 in 40) say that when they try to print, they get asked for a password. I don't understand why this happens.
    Are they trying to print at a low resolution while I only allow high resolution printing? Is that possibly why they get asked for a password? Does anyone have any ideas about why this is happening? Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks for your reply. They are all opening the files with Adobe Reader on a computer, not on tablets or phones. They have no problem with opening the file or filling in the form. It's only when printing that they get asked for a password.

  • Restrict users from editing and deleting not owned items

    Hello guys.
    I'm trying to restrict users from editing and deleting items created by other users. I know, that it can be achieved by using SPList.WriteSecurity parameter, but if I change its value to 2 or 4 - nothing happens... 
    May be there are some list permissions that can override this security setting? I tried to combine permissions in different ways but users either cannot modify any items or can edit/delete all of them... 
    By the way, setting ReadSecurity=2 works as it should work regardless of user permissions...
    Please help.

    I understand that you want to change the write security for the document library. You can try the PowerShell script below:
    $web = Get-SPWeb http://serverURL
    $list = $web.Lists["Document library"]
    $list.ReadSecurity = 2
    $list.WriteSecurity =2
    $list.Update()
    $web.Dispose()
    This setting will not affect the site collection administrator, he will always be able to edit the documents. You need to sue another account to have a test. If this still doesn't work, I think you need to manually edit the permission for each documents.

  • Photos fail to print after editing with clone stamp tool and layers

    After editing using the clone stamp tool and using layers the photos fail to print.  I even tried a simple crop edit and the photo failed to print.
    Photos print without editing.

    Im working on a Mac OX 10.9.4 and Photoshop Elements 12 for Mac
    I tried printing from Organizer and editor and I have the image saved on my desktop
    I don't receive an error when I try to print. The message usually reads: Printing, 2% complete or 13% complete.
    I have left it sit overnight but it never produced a photo.
    The printer is new: HP Envy 5400 and I have no problem printing photos from I Photo.

    To hide/disable controls based on user group in an InfoPath form, a solution is that we can call User Profile Service to check the group of current user, then hide/disable
    specific controls by setting some rules in form.

  • Keep user from printing and seeing certain pages

    Here's the scenerio:
    The form has 4 pages.  I only want the user to see and know about page 1.
    I need to batch print from the other 3 pages, each page in a seperate batch
    Here's what I tried and the resulting issue:
    1. Format pages 2,3,4 as visible print only
         a. the user can tell there are 3 other pages -they show up blank
         b. the user can see them if they decide to print
    2. Format pages 2,3,4 as visible print only and restrict printing for the user
         a. I can't print without opening each one with a password - doesn't work well with batch-by-page printing
    3. Format pages 2,3,4 as hidden - the user can't tell or see the other 3 pages but:
         a. I can't print the pages
    3. Format pages 2,3,4 as hidden and have the form submitted as xml and import them into the full PDF
         a. there are fields that are dyamically changed based on user selection (ie. font selection), so the xml import doesn't work for that

    You could try a hidden field which looks for the user's "name".
    There are security issues and the script has to be in a trusted function. You can do this be placing a Javascript file inside the Acrobat folder. The trouble generally with trusted fuctions is that you have to send each user a copy of the js file and they have to also put it in the correct folder.
    In your case this is not a problem, because you only want the js file on your computer and do not need to distribute it to others.
    When you put this file (uploaded) in Acrobat / Javascript folder, Acrobat will automatically load it.
    In Acrobat make sure you have set a "Name" in Edit / Preferences / Identity tab:
    When you open the PDF, your user name will be in the field. This will only happen if the js file is loaded in the correct folder of the computer you are using.
    Once that is working, it is a simple step to include an if statement in the textfield, after the script that is in the initialize event:
    if (this.rawValue == "lfalke") // or whatever your user name is set to...
         page2.presence = "visible";
         page3.presence = "visible";
         page4.presence = "visible";
    else
         page2.presence = "hidden";
         page3.presence = "hidden";
         page4.presence = "hidden";
    This would mean that the visibility of the three pages would be automatic. User with the js file AND your user name could see pages 2-4, everyone else would not see these pages.
    I know it is a bit convoluted, but once set up it should continue to work OK.

    Excel and SharePoint List does not allow two way sync it is only unidirectional.
    You have to go by Scott's suggestions or else Office Web Apps which will allow excel Semiformal co-authoring (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint-server-help/document-collaboration-and-co-authoring-HA101812148.aspx).
    Here is how you can use the import Excel funcationality in SharePoint custom list.
    1. Define a table to your Excel Data and Save the excel file
    2. Go to your site, create a new list either using Site Settings or All site content menu, by selecting Import SpreedSheet
    3. select table in the import dialog box
    SharePoint will create a new list with the excel data.
    As per your requirement , the challenges that we have are -

    You cannot reimport excel to a list as per your above requirement, there is only one way of importing to a list library and every time it will create a new list.

    You can export the list to excel file for processing offline and again there is no resync between Excel and List.

    You can use item level permission for restricting user access to a list item or use SharePoint designer custom workflow to give item level access.

  • PDF Printer and Acrobat fail to open or run or anything else.

    Adobe Acrobat Standard 9 has been installed on this TS2008 (VM) server for over a year without problem until recently.
    To start, the Adobe PDF printer stopped creating PDFs. When it worked a user would print and the PDF (creation) progress bar dialog box would open and the Adobe Distiller icon would appear in the taskbar (swirling) and a PDF would be created. Now we get the progress bar but no Distiller icon and no PDF is created.
    Then Adobe Acrobat Standard (editor) failed to open any PDFs. We installed Adobe Acrobat 9 reader which opened PDFs for a while and now that has stopped working.
    After many uninstalls, reinstalls, reg cleans we decided to open a case with Adobe who told us that Acrobat 9 is not supported on Server2008. The customer purchased Adobe Acrobat X.
    We installed Acrobat X (in terminal server mode) and all was well for around 24hrs and then it all stopped working again.
    I have since uninstalled reinstalled again. I created 1 PDF and after that the progress bar just hangs. We performed a controlled user logon to the server and all was going well until one user logged in and he isnt able to open Acrobat to read or edit PDFs.
    There are no events logs which appear to directly relate to this. We were concerned about a HpBIDI driver which no longer errors but we do have a large amount of EventID 7036, ServerControl Manager Eventlog provider and EventID 4 SpoolerWin32SPL.
    We have since been back to Adobe Support who advised us to unplug the network cable which we cannot do as its a hosted VM (with no access to the the VM console). He then asked us to remove the server from the Domain which we can't do as this is a single live server. They intend to come back to me!
    We are really at a loss here for idea's, can anyone please provide some clues?

    Try running the Repair command from under the Help menu to see if it corrects the problem.
    The probable cause of the error is, multiple processes of Acrobat/Reader running in the background.
    If 'Repair' doesn't resolve the issue kindly follow the steps mentioned below and check, if it helps.
    1) Press CTRL+ALT+DEL together
    2) Go to the Task Manager
    3) Go to Processes in the Task Manager and kill al the processes related to Acrobat/Reader.
    4) Launch Reader/Acrobat (It should launch without an error).
    To further isolate the issue you might want to run Acrobat/Reader in an environment where no other services are running.
    This can be achieved via "MSCONFIG"
    1) Click on start type run
    2) Type MSCONFIG in the run prompt
    3) Go to services and click on hide all Microsoft services
    4) Click disable all
    5) Go to the startup in configuration window and disable all startup items
    6) Restart your system
    7) Launch Acrobat/Reader
    If, it is launched without an error, a service on your system is conflicting with Acrobat/Reader.
    Let me know if issue persist.
