ResultSetMetaData problem

Hi
I am using Jdev9 to load a stored procedure in oracle 8.1.7(as far as I know). This procedure uses metadata.getColumnType and metadata.getColumnTypeName. When I am executing the procedure outside oracle, using thin jdbc, it works ok, at the moment I load the procedure into Oracle, this two methods throw NullPointerException. I tried using the jdk 1.3 coming with Jdev, but didn't help.

  • DataTable help!

    Hi,
    I'm a new user of Sun Java Studio Creator, and I was trying to follow the tutorials to make a database connection to a DataTable. It should be very easy to do so, and I did it, but it only worked with the database that came with the IDE (Travel).
    I've created a datasource to an Oracle database, and it allowed me to see the tables in it... The problem appears when I drag and drop any table to a datatable. The datatable imediatly becomes a little red square!
    Is it because my version is the trial one?
    I apreciate any help
    Pedro Freitas

    Hi again,
    I verified, and the connection to the database was ok (I was able to see tabs with the entries of some tables).
    When that odd behaviour happens (red square...) no message appears in the left bottom of the window, only a red circle with a x on it!
    But in the log, many exceptions occur. I've copied them to this message.
    Thanks for the help
    Pedro Freitas

  • Problem with the getTableName of resultsetmetadata.

    Hi,
    I have a query that selects fields from three tables. With this query I am creating a resultset from which a resultsetMetaData is formed. Then I am trying to find out the tableName by passing the
    column index to the getTableName method of the resultsetMetaData. But it returns " " (null). However while trying to get the column name of the metadata it exactly gives me the columnname.
    I am using the driver class "com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver" as my JDBC driver. Given below is the query what I am using.
    Could anyone please suggest me what could be the problem and why I am not able to get the TableName from the resultSetMetaData.
    How can I proceed to accomplish that?
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Rajac.

    Hi,
    Its again me. I did not get any response in the forum. While browsing into the forum I came to know that
    "FOR BROWSE" clause should be used for getting the metadata corresponding to the table. I used "For Browse"
    after the where clause in the query but still the getTableName() returns " " and while trying to access the resultset
    value, encountering an error message "[Microsoft][SQLServer JDBC Driver]Unexpected token type: TABNAME".
    Could you please kindly ley me know possible work arounds for this.
    Thanks.
    Rajac.

  • Problem with checkbox in JTable when using MyTableModel

    Hi all,
    I have been trawling these message boards for days looking for the answer to my question but have not had any success.
    I am extending AbstractTabel model to create MyTableModel which returns a vector containing the results of a MySql query. One column in this query returns a "0" or "1" which I then store as the boolean value into the vector so that it is rendered as a checkbox on the screen.
    I have also overridden the setValueAt method. THe problem is that when I attempt to check the box in the table, the checkbox isn't actually checking.
    Do I need to implement some sort of listener which picks up the user clicking the box and refresh the model?
    Here is my model code:
    public class MyTableModel extends AbstractTableModel {
        private Vector v = null;
        int listId;
        MyTableModel(int listId){
            this.listId = listId;
            v = new ListItemManagement().getFullList(listId);
       public Class getColumnClass(int c) {
            switch(c) {
                case 6:
                    return Boolean.class;
                default:
                    return Object.class;
        public String getColumnName(int colIndex){
            return ((String[])v.get(0))[colIndex];
        public int getColumnCount() {
            return ((String[])v.get(0)).length;
        public int getRowCount() {
            return (v.size() - 1);
        public Object getValueAt(int rowIndex, int colIndex) {
            return ((Object[])v.get(rowIndex + 1))[colIndex];
        public void setValueAt(Object aValue, int rowIndex, int colIndex) {
            System.out.println("Value: " + String.valueOf(aValue));
            Object row[] = (Object[]) v.elementAt(rowIndex);
            if(colIndex<6){
                row[colIndex] = (String)aValue;
            else{
                row[colIndex] = (Boolean)aValue;
            v.setElementAt(row, rowIndex);
            fireTableCellUpdated(rowIndex, colIndex);
        public boolean isCellEditable(int row, int col) {
            //Note that the data/cell address is constant,
            //no matter where the cell appears onscreen.
            return ! (col < 6);
        }Here is the getFullList function which returns the vector:
                rs = stmt.executeQuery();
                ResultSetMetaData colData = rs.getMetaData();
                int columnCount = colData.getColumnCount();
                String[] columnNames = new String[columnCount];
                for (int i = 0; i < columnCount; i++){
                    columnNames[i] = colData.getColumnName(i + 1);
                Vector v = new Vector();
                v.add(columnNames);
                while (rs.next()){
                    Object[] values = new Object[columnCount];
                    for (int i = 0; i < (columnCount-1); i++){
                        values[i] = rs.getString(i + 1);
                    int sel = rs.getInt("selected");
                    System.out.println(sel);;
                    if(sel==0){
                        values[columnCount-1]=new Boolean(false);
                    else if (sel==1)
                        values[columnCount-1]=new Boolean(true);
                    v.add(values);
                rs.close();
                stmt.close();
                return v;

    Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.
    I've looked at the Swing jtable tutorial and added a TableModelListener and have managed to achieve the desired results but for one thing.
    When I attempt to check the box on the first row of the jTable I get a runtime error:
    Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.ArrayStoreException: java.lang.Boolean
    at project.MyTableModel.setValueAt(MyTableModel.java:65)
    I have been playing around with the setValueAt method and it is in my original post. Here is how it currently looks:
        public void setValueAt(Object aValue, int rowIndex, int colIndex) {
            System.out.println("Value: " + String.valueOf(aValue));
            Object row[] = (Object[]) v.elementAt(rowIndex);
            if(colIndex<6){
                row[colIndex] = (String)aValue;
            else{
                    if(getValueAt(rowIndex,colIndex).toString()=="true"){
                    row[6] = new Boolean(false);
                else{
                    row[6] = new Boolean(true);
            v.setElementAt(row, rowIndex);
            fireTableCellUpdated(rowIndex, colIndex);
        }

  • Problem with store ResultSet and show result in table

    Hi, I'm kind of new in ADF, I need to store ResultSet and show result in table-component. I have two problems:
    1) I get my ResultSet by calling callStoredProcedure(...) and this returns actually ref_cursor as ResultSet.
    When I try to println() contains of this result set in this method - it works OK (commented part),
    but when I want to println() somewhere else (eg. in retrieveRefCursor() method) it doesn't work.
    The problem is that the scrollability of the ResultSet is lost - it becomes a TYPE_FORWARD_ONLY ResultSet.
    Is there any way to store data from ref_cursor for a long time?
    2) My second problem is "store any result set and show this data in table". I have tried use method storeNewResultSet() but
    without result (table contains only "No rows yet" and everything seems to be OK - no exception, no warning, no error...).
    I have tried to call this method with ResultSet from select on dbs (without resultSet as ref_cursor ) - no result with createRowFromResultSet(),
    storeNewResultSet(), setUserDataForCollection()...
    I've tried a lot of ways to do this, but it doesn't work. I really don't know how to make it so it can work.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Problem printing the JTable

    Hi all,
    I have a problem with printing JTable.
    My application has a submit button,JTable and Print Button.
    As I click on the Submit button, the data is retrieved from the Database(MS Access) and displayed on the JTable.
    Now when I click on the Print button, the printer properties dialog box is displayed. But when I click on the print button in the dialog box, nothing is printed on the paper.
    I checked the printers and faxes in the control panel, It showed Java printing under the Document name and Printing under the Status. It is displayed for sometime and then disappeared after some time. But nothing is printed on the paper(not even the blank paper).

  • JTable displays string in wrong order : my code problem or Java problem ?

    I have the following code that displays data in a JTable, most of the time it works fine, but I've realized when I have a cell with values like : "Snowboarding"+"[123456789]"
    It would display it as : [Snowboarding[123456789
    For a string like : "Chasing toddlers"+"<123456789>"
    It would display it as : <Chasing toddlers<123456789
    It not only moved the last bracket to the front, but also changed its direction from "]" to "[" and from ">" to "<"
    Is there anything wrong with my code ? Or is this a Java problem ?

    * TableSorter is a decorator for TableModels; adding sorting functionality to a supplied TableModel. TableSorter does not store
    * or copy the data in its TableModel; instead it maintains a map from the row indexes of the view to the row indexes of the
    * model. As requests are made of the sorter (like getValueAt(row, col)) they are passed to the underlying model after the row numbers
    * have been translated via the internal mapping array. This way, the TableSorter appears to hold another copy of the table
    * with the rows in a different order.
    * <p/>
    * TableSorter registers itself as a listener to the underlying model, just as the JTable itself would. Events recieved from the model
    * are examined, sometimes manipulated (typically widened), and then passed on to the TableSorter's listeners (typically the JTable).
    * If a change to the model has invalidated the order of TableSorter's rows, a note of this is made and the sorter will resort the
    * rows the next time a value is requested.
    * <p/>
    * When the tableHeader property is set, either by using the setTableHeader() method or the two argument constructor, the table
    * header may be used as a complete UI for TableSorter. The default renderer of the tableHeader is decorated with a renderer
    * that indicates the sorting status of each column. In addition, a mouse listener is installed with the following behavior:
    * <ul>
    * <li>
    * Mouse-click: Clears the sorting status of all other columns and advances the sorting status of that column through three
    * values: {NOT_SORTED, ASCENDING, DESCENDING} (then back to NOT_SORTED again).
    * <li>
    * SHIFT-mouse-click: Clears the sorting status of all other columns and cycles the sorting status of the column through the same
    * three values, in the opposite order: {NOT_SORTED, DESCENDING, ASCENDING}.
    * <li>
    * CONTROL-mouse-click and CONTROL-SHIFT-mouse-click: as above except that the changes to the column do not cancel the statuses of columns
    * that are already sorting - giving a way to initiate a compound sort.
    * </ul>
    * <p/>
    * This is a long overdue rewrite of a class of the same name that first appeared in the swing table demos in 1997.

    * <p/>
    * <p/>
    * <ul>
    * <li>
    * Mouse-click: Clears the sorting status of all other columns and advances the sorting status of that column through three
    * values: {NOT_SORTED, ASCENDING, DESCENDING} (then back to NOT_SORTED again).
    * <li>
    * SHIFT-mouse-click: Clears the sorting status of all other columns and cycles the sorting status of the column through the same
    * three values, in the opposite order: {NOT_SORTED, DESCENDING, ASCENDING}.
    * <li>
    * CONTROL-mouse-click and CONTROL-SHIFT-mouse-click: as above except that the changes to the column do not cancel the statuses of columns
    * that are already sorting - giving a way to initiate a compound sort.
    * </ul>
    * <p/>
    * This is a long overdue rewrite of a class of the same name that first appeared in the swing table demos in 1997.

  • ResultSetMetaData.getColumnLabel bad bug

    I have a situation where the following occurs:
    I have a prepared statement that I execute returning a result set.
    // Execute the query
    ResultSet results = ps.executeQuery();
    I then pull the meta data from the result set.
    ResultSetMetaData meta = results.getMetaData();
    int cols = meta.getColumnCount();
    I loop through the result set and pull the values, the column type and the column label.
    // Put the result into the hashtable
    while (results.next()) {
    for (int i=1; i<=cols; i++) {
         // if obj type = CHAR strip trailing blanks
         switch (meta.getColumnType(i))
         case java.sql.Types.CHAR:
         obj = results.getObject(i);
         if (obj != null) {
              hReturn.put(meta.getColumnLabel(i).toUpperCase(),
                   obj.toString().trim());
    At some stage the getColumnLabel starts to return nulls instead of strings (actually the only this seems to happen is with numeric types), even while still within the same result set, and even though a previous call has been successful!!!
    This problem does not occur with Informix JDBC against the Informix DB or with the Merant JDBC Drivers against Oracle 8i
    It does occur with HP-UX 11i, JDK 1.3, JDBC drivers for 8i and 9i as loaded from the CDs and downloaded from the OTN site. We have tried against Oracle RDBMS 8.1.7 and 9.0.1
    Using the debug jar and setting tracing on shows nothing obvious.
    Any ideas? otherwise it's $2.5K to Datadirect for every system we ship or shifting back to Informix...

    VISA is the generic communication interface.
    Hyperterminal has serial comm drivers as well.  It just so happens that Hyperterminal is using the serial comm drivers that are built into Windows.  That's why you don't notice them.
    If you installed LabVIEW, then you should have installed the drivers that come with it.  It is on a separate DVD.  Obviously you haven't.

    Im really stuck!!! any suggestions? thanks in advance

    Thank you for your response and sorry for the length
    of code,
    Thats was my first idea that it was asking for
    or something I dont have but I checked my database and
    I dont have any unusually large data entries (most
    between 8-15 letters, the others are numbers) could it
    be something wrong with how I've entered the database
    in MsAccess, or am i barking up the wrong tree again!
    Many thanks
    RobI think you've misunderstood me. This has nothing to do with unusually large data entries, but rather the opposite. You are wrongly expecting data that is shorter than you think. When you call rs.getString(i) to retrieve a column value of a field, and you only want the first 5 characters in the column (instead of 10 or whatever the column size is), you would do something similar to the following:
    String column_value = rs.getString(1).subtstring(0,5);The above expects a String that is at least 5 characters. Your problem is when your column value returned is less than the specified substring index ( in this case 5 ) it will throw an exception. If you changed your code to this, the error will not occur:
    String column_value = rs.getString( 1 ).subtstring( 0, 5);
    if ( column_value.length() > 5 )
    column_value = column_value.substring( 0, 5 );
    }Jamie

    Hello,
    This is my program.
    I am able to get the tables and their columnnames , now my problem is i need to get the actual datatypes and their length.
    As of now i need to get the datatype from oracle and its length. one more problem is i m checking for the last column if its the last column in table i need to close with this brace ")" else i need to put a comma and continue. when i m using the isafterlast method its not working. how to check that.
    It should be of great help to me if you could let me know....as i need to give it to my manager on monday morning.
    Thanks & Regards
    Srinivas

  • Javabeans: Difficult NotSerializableException problem

    Hi. I have a pretty complex problem with a javabean application. My javabean application is bundled in a jar file.
    This application needs a Database to run. I had to bundle the Database driver INSIDE the jar file, along with the javabean application. The problem is:
    - When I try to serialize my javabean application, I get a NotSerializableException saying that the Class org.gjt.mm.mysql.jdbc2.ResultSetMetaData could not get serialized. BUT THIS CLASS IS A DATABASE DRIVER CLASS. I don't NEED to serialize it. And the problem is that I can't even modify this class to make it serializable.
    Please help, this is making me crazy!

    Find out which instance variables in your classes reference the driver class and add the "transient" keyword to their definition. They will then be excluded from serialization. After deserialization it is then up to you to populate the variables with new objects (they will be null then).
