Retain 16:9 ratio when exporting to MPEG4 for web streaming?

I was surprised not to find this topic in previous discussions, since it doesn't seem to be an unusual thing to want to do. But I'm new to Compressor, so I may be missing something very simple.
I'm wanting to post on a web-page a 6-minute sequence from a longer project shot and edited in FCP in 16:9 format. Using File - Export - Using Compressor, and selecting either the QT6 or QT7 options, the resulting videos are squashed to 4:3.
I can't find any way to select a 16:9 option for MPEG4 with Compressor (as one can with MPEG2, which is what I'm used to using). I found a post that mentioned the "Geometry tab" in Compressor, but can't find such a tab anywhere. I also saw someone recommend changing the 320x240 to 320x180 in Quicktime, which sounds as if it would work, but I can't find a way to do that either.
Any advice on how to proceed will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

If you drop your video into Compressor, and assign a web download MPEG4 preset, you can double click on the preset and show the inspector.
There you can assign or modify your aspect ratio and save it as a custom preset.
Just did it.

  • Artwork shifting when exporting or saving for web?

Have been creating some simple icons in Illustrator (CS 5.5), but the artwork is shifting when I try to export. For example, I'll create a 30x30px artboard, draw the icon inside the artboard, end export as a PNG. When I do this, even though the artwork is completely within the bounds of the artboard (no drop shadows or anything like that that would extend outside the artboard), there is some slight clippling that occurs in the exported icon. It's like Illustrator is shifting the artwork to the right and/or down 1 pixel as it exports.  Any ideas what might be happening here?
In the meantime, as a work-around I've just been copying the artwork from Illustrator, pasting it into a 30x30px canvas in Photoshop, pasting the artwork, adn then doing Save for Web. This works fine, but is an extra step that I'd rather not have to do.

    Jacob,
I tried enabling "Use Preview Bounds" as you suggested, but it still showed everything within the artboard. This was as expected since I set the button stroke for inside alignment rather than centered alignment when I created it.
I've attached an image showing the icon in 3 states. The left most image is the icon as it appears in Illustrator shown within the artboard. Actually the artboard was created by clicking on the icon.  When "Use Preview Bounds" was enabled, it lined up perfectly with the artboard lines.  The middle image shows the icon in the Save for Web dialog preview. You can see that it already looks shifted.  The last image on the right shows the exported icon where the right and bottom edges looked cropped.
As I mentioned, if I create a 30x30px canvas in PS, copy the artwork into it, and export using Save for Web for PS, it looks fine.
    Thanks for your help, BTW.

  • 4 questions on export/importing graphics for Web and Photoshop.

Hi, I have 4 questions here, and if you can answer one or more, I'd be happy!! :-)
    1. In general, can there be a loss of quality when I export a file from Illustrator CS3 to Photoshop CS3, and then re-import it into Illustrator?
My guess is that you can switch applications with one single file, but you have to know what you're doing (any advise? I'm working with files that contain both text with either illustrated graphics or photos).
    2. When I switch applications like that, which one is the final application I should save my final work from (for use in print and web)? Does this matter at all? (Example: I have text created in Illustrator. I export it into Photoshop and add a filter, and maybe a blured-layer of the the whole graphic.)
    3. After completing the steps in the example above, and I do re-import it all back into Illustrator, the image appears with horizontal path-like blue lines, that let me slice the photo/text if I wanted to. Why does it do this and how do I get rid of those blue lines?
    4. When exporting a file for web, what options are you setting for .gif and .jpg in order to NOT see its white background/frame around graphic?

    1. Yes. The artwork will be rasterized to a fixed resolution in Photoshop. When re-imported it may appear the same, but it will have limited resolution on output, whereas Illustrator vector art has no (or infinite) resolution.
    2. Depends on the artwork and what the client or printer has requested. If you can keep the text editable in Illustrator (blur and some Photoshop filters are available) then you'll have a more versatile and resolution independent file than you would if you switched to Photoshop. In the end, if the resolution of you art is adequate, it's up to you which is better for you to work with, based on your skills and experience. Keep all working files so you can make changes to artwork imported from one program into another.
Some features you might enjoy: You can place Illustrator files into Photoshop and make them Smart Objects. They remember they are Illustrator files and can be edited in Illustrator at any time. Rotate, scale, or distort the artwork in Photoshop and it is re-rendered a the PSD file's native resolution. In CS3 you can add filters to Smart Objects while keeping the vector data intact.
    3. I have read about this, but as I'm not fully up on CS3 and don't have it installed on my main system I can't help.
    4. To not see a white background for JPEG use a different matte colour. JPEGs cannot be transparent, so some colour must show where you want transparency. for GIF, the same applies, but you can turn on transparency. The artwork will be transparent, but the matte colour will determine how the anti-aliased edges are rendered. Use a matte colour that's as close to your expected background as possible or choose None. PNG 24 supports 8-bit transparency, which looks best of all, but is not supported by MS Internet Explorer versions 6 or lower.

  • Exporting for Web Streaming...

Hello - what are the best specs to export a file for Web Streaming? My client gave me the specs of 640x320, and it's too stretched. Also, would it be in Sorenson? MPEG-4? Something else? Thanks so much!

But H.264, good to know that that's the 'standard' setting for Web Streaming... ,
There are no standards for Web streaming. None. H.264 is a convenient place to start but only because Flash will see it and Microsoft's latest products sometimes do.
Streaming is often confused with but can be wildly different from unicast, multicast, download, and live viewing.

  • Why does iPhoto (9.0/11) not retain the Event name when exporting more than one event? (using File - Export - Album name with number).

Why does iPhoto (9.0/11) not retain the Event name when exporting more than one event? (using File -> Export -> Album name with number).
Exporting a single Event retains the Event name which is what I'd expect. But highlighting more than one event and exporting it renames the images to Events 001.JPG, Event 002.JPG etc.
I was recently on holidays and had all my events nicely split on Dad's computer but when I went to export it I couldn't retain any of this information. Now I have to replicate this all again on my computer.
It wasn't possible to export the entire library as the external drive was fat32 format an I didn't want all of it. It would be nice to export a bunch of events to someone and have it retain the name.
Does anyone have a work around or will this be fixed at some point by Apple?

  • Audio/Video out of sync when exporting to MPEG4

I am working on a project that is being edited on FCP 5.1.4
Anyhow, there is problem when exporting to MPEG4- the audio/video is out of sync.
Sequence settings show 29.97 editing base with 48 mhz sound, which is the same as the MPEG 4 settings, but they are not in sync. Anyone encounter this problem? I've never had this problem before previously.
    Thanks

    Hi Harm,
last time you suggested the same but  I wouldn't know how to take the BM card out of the equation. I only have on station. If I export to Beta SP there is no problem.

  • Set maximum aspect ratio when exporting

    Hello,
I'm using LR5 and I'm wondering if it's possible (maybe with plugins if necessary) to set a maximum aspect ratio when experting photos. For example I have a picture that I cropped to be a panorama, with an aspect ratio of 26:11. The print shop can print at a maximum aspect ratio of 19:11. So my 26:11 image is too small and I need to add some bars at the top and bottom of my photo to reach an aspect ratio of 19:11 (see also the sketch below). Later, when I get the finished prints, I have to cut the bars at the top and bottom with a pair of scissors for example. Is it possible to let LR automatically add these borders for a given maximum apsect ratio?

Hi Victoria, thank you for your reply. I looked at the Mogrify plugin, but couldn't find the option I need. I see some options for canvas and resizing and adding bars, but these all require to set a certain absolute pixel dimension. I don't want to resize images to a specific pixel size, I just want to correct the aspect ratio by adding bars at the bottom and top of the photo. Maybe I'm missing something in the Mogrify plugin? Could you explain how I can add the borders automatically to reach a maximum aspect ratio of 19:11 using Mogrify? Just to be clear, all photos with an aspect ration between 11:11 and 19:11 don't have to be changed. Only photos with an aspect ratio larger than 19:11 should be changed to 19:11 by adding the bars.

  • Errors in Export to PDF for web use - some images are lost when PDF is enlarged & in browser

I have a multi-page PDF in InDesign CS6 that I want to export to view on the web. I need the file to stay under 2MB, and I need it to be crisp and nice enough to read the type on the page (as small as 9pt type).
The errors that are occurring are the following:
On some browsers, some images will entirely not show up. Some of the missing images have been pasted into the document, some placed. I cannot think of a correlation.
When the PDF is enlarged (Adobe Acrobat X 10.1.10) to more than ~200%, there is one placed image that will mostly disappear. What I mean by "mostly" is that little bits of it are still visible, like I masked it carelessly or something. Since this is only occurring with one image it seems that it would be a problem with the image itself, yes? I'm all ears if I'm making a mistake. It is a placed .ai file with no link errors. Should I not be placing directly from illustrator? It renders wonderfully from 100% all the way up to 188%, and then if you enlarge by margins of 1% little bits of it disappear, almost a chunk at a time.
The way I've been exporting is:
File > Export > Adobe PDF (Print)
Adobe PDF Preset: Smallest File Size
    Standard: None
    Compatinility: Acrobat 6 (PDF 1.5)
Options: Optimize for Fast Web View
Export Layers: Visible & Printable Layers
    Compression
I always change the downsampling from [100/150] to [150/225]. I usually leave the JPG image quality low. I leave both bottom boxes checked (compress text and line art, crop image data to frames)
    Output
    Color Conversion: convert to destination
    Destination: sRGB 1EC61966-2.1
Profile Inclusion Policy: Include Destination Profile
However, after reading a few other forum questions I started trying to export as Acrobat 4 so that it would flatten. When I do that, problem #2 still persists although I didn't test problem #1. I haven't tried using Distiller, and using the "prepare for web publishing" action within Acrobat itself makes the PDF too artifacted.
At the heart of my question is this: I am a young designer at an old company that is not necessarily keeping up with the times. I REALLY want to know what the best, most efficient way to export a pdf for web viewing is. Does this exist in InDesign, outside of InDesign? Does it exist at all? Tell me what I'm doing wrong so that I can get better!
    Thank you in advance.

Show Large Images is a preference inside of Acrobat which might be disabled.

And below, showing the same error after pressing alt/shift/ctrl when clicking on editor and clearing the preferences.
I don't have a 'Save for Web' folder anywhere on my C: drive. I searched and came up with no folder with the text "save for web" in it.
I did find a "save for web" folder on my D: drive and deleted that.. but now when I start up Photoshop, the option for Save for Web is grayed out...not able to select it.

  • Exporting HDV footage to web streaming

I'm trying to Export HDV footage to web streaming format but it always ends up stretched to fit the streaming format. any suggestions

i'm with andy. i've been shooting hdv1080i60 for the past few months for web distribution, but a bunch of the sites/video players that i use don't support 16:9, and if i uploaded the video like that, it would get all stretched. my workaround has been to export>QT movie after i'm done editing, and then make a new 4:3 sequence and drop the previously exported quicktime file in it, and then export>using QT conversion at 320x240 with my normal web settings. it makes the video "letterboxed" but it plays undistorted when uploaded to youtube, google video, etc.

  • Why do my images appear washed out when I use Save for Web?

Q: The color/brightness/tone of my image changes when I use
    Save for Web. Why?
A: Photoshop is a color-managed application. The Web is not. Normally, when you view an image in
    Save for Web or
ImageReady you are viewing it without color management and see it how it will appear when uploaded to the Web.
To minimize changes, Convert your image to sRGB (i.e from
    Edit menu choose
    Convert to Profile )before using
Save for Web. You should also make sure that
Save for Web has been configured so that images are displayed using the document color profile (see attached screenshot for guidance).
You should also ensure that your monitor properly calibrated and the gamma is set to 2.2.

Same here. Didn't get any good New Years Eve photos indoors.

  • FCP project not the correct aspect ratio when exporting to Quicktime

    Hello All;
I am trying to export a FCP project in its native resolution (1440 X 1080) to Quicktime but everytime I try, the aspect ratio is messed up and people look taller and thinner than they should.
The project is a resolution of 1440 X 1080 as determined by examining the sequence settings in FCP.
    I configure quicktime (see below) to a resolution of 1440 X 1080.
So why isn't my Quicktime video the correct resolution when I play it with the IMac's Quicktime player ? I shrink the player to 1/2 size to fit it all on the screen.
My exact settings are below ...
    Export - Using Quicktime Conversion
    Format - Quicktime Movie
    Video Settings - Compressor - MPEG-4
    Quality - Best
Not sure if I changed the framerate - if I did, I probably changed it to 29.97
I didn't touch the other settings in the video settings - left them to default
I didn't change the filter settings - I left them at default
Size - 1440 X 1080 (The actual resolution of my source video)
I checked the box - preserve aspect ratio using letterbox (If applicable)
Other settings were left at default
Sound Settings - Format - AAC
    Rate - 48 KHZ
Render Settings - Quality - Best
Target Bitrate - 128 KHZ (This was left at default - I did not change it)
Prepare for Internet Streaming - Fast Start checked (This was default - I did not change it)
All other settings not specifically mentioned were left at default.
    Thanks. Tim

I don't have much of an answer for you, but to test try not checking the preserve aspect ratio. Rather than reexport the entire 1 hour just export 10 seconds so that you can trouble shoot different things.
    Hope that helps a bit,
    Eric

  • Aspect ratio when exporting full quality -- is this a bug?

    Hi,
I'm new to iMovie. I'm really enjoying playing around with it and think it's a really nice tool and very intuitive. But there's one thing that is bothering me. I'm working with 16:9 aspect ratio (Widescreeen) as the project type which corresponds to how the movies were recorded (a Canon MVX4i or Optura 600 in the USA I think). Everything works fine until I try to export in full quality format (using Export). The .dv file only plays back in 4:3 aspect ratio. I tried using the Expert settings, with 16:9 set and both PAL and NTSC but QuickTime and Preview still only see the movie in 4:3 aspect. If I understand correctly, the aspect ratio is just a flag that is set somewhere.
Is this a bug or am I missing something? I don't have QT Pro by the way?
One more question: in expert settings for DV Export settings, does anyone have a recommendation for what I shold pick for DV Format, and Scan mode?
    Thanks very much in advance,
    David
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi David,
This isn't entirely unique to DV. But in simplistic terms what happens is that the widescreen footage that you capture with your camera is the same resolution as square screen. The number of pixels (the dots that make up the picture) for PAL, which is the format used in Portugal I believe, is 720 x 576.
The pixels are squashed into a kind of oblong shape but then when played on widescreen kit the pixels become square causing the picture to stretch sideways. When you view the footage in QT it simply shows the picture as is - meaning that it outputs the picture as 720x576 with the oblong display.
However, when you view the footage in iMovie there's a flag in the file that tells iMovie that the footage is wide and therefore to stretch it accordingly.
There's a differing opinion of whether this display difference in QT is a bug or a feature. As Dan says, if you want to display widescreen footage in QT you're better off exporting a widescreen QT movie using the expert settings:
    From within iMovie...
    - Select File --> Export from the menu
    - In the Quicktime section choose Compress Movie For "Expert Settings"
    - Click the Share button
    - In the save dialog box that pops up Select "Movie to QuickTime Movie" in the Export section
    - Click Option...
    - In the Movie Settings dialog box click on settings
    - Select DV - PAL from the compression type
    - Keep the Frame Rate at Current
    - In the Compressor settings choose your Quality
    - Set the scan mode to Interlaced
    - Set the Aspect Ratio to 16:9 ( this is the bit that tells QT to play in widescreen)
    - Click OK
    - In the sound section click the Setting button
    - In the sounds settings dialog box set the Format to Linear PCM
    - Set the channels to Stereo (L R)
    - Set the Rate to 48.000kHz
    - Set the Sample Rate Converter settings to Quality Normal and the Linear PCM Settings to a sample size of 16 bits.
    - Uncheck all the other options (Little Endian, Floating Point and Unsigned)
    - Click OK
    - Uncheck the Prepare for Internet Streaming box
    - Click OK and set a destination for your file.
    - Click save to compress the file.
The resulting file that is created above should now show in QT as widescreen. However you should bear in mind that you should work off the raw DV file rather than this new created one in iMovie. As a rule of thumb you should be thinking a little bit about the output media of the file. So for example if your final output medium is DVD then you can continue to work in iMovie and iDVD without problem. If you want to create a QT file for viewing on your computer then it's advisable to create a seperate QT file for this pupose.

Hope this makes a little more sense now and sorry if I've covered stuff you already know. Hopefully this information will be of use to you but post back if you need more help.
    Cheers.

  • Is it possible to retain multiple audio tracks when exporting?

While ripping my DVD collection, I've wanted to add a purchased RiffTrax (see www.riftrax.com) to the movie as another audio track. I've been successful, but it took the following steps:
    1. Encode the movie using Handbrake, open the resulting m4v file in Quicktime Pro
    2. Also in Quicktime Pro, open the Rifftrax aac file I created and add it as another audio track in the m4v
    3. Save the m4v as a Quicktime mov file
    4. Use Handbrake again to encode the mov file into an m4v file, including my added audio track
The reason I have to do step 4 is because if I were to export an m4v file directly from Quicktime Pro, it would compress all of the audio tracks into a single audio track. It would save a lot of time if Quicktime could export multiple audio tracks, at least when exporting to formats that can handle them. Does anyone know if this is possible?
BTW, if anyone wants more details into how I create the RiffTrax aac, just ask.
    - Jake

I've answered my own question, it was a lot easier than I thought. After the first encoding by Handbrake, there's really no difference between calling it a mov file or m4v file. I can change the file extension at will and there's no need to do an export that mashes the audio tracks. It's only AppleTV that needs to see the m4v file extension, Quicktime and iTunes doesn't seem to care one way or the other.
Thanks for letting me think out loud.

  • Error when exporting to Excel for SharePoint 2010 List

We have few users who are getting the following error message when they try to export to Excel from the SharePoint list:
"An operation that uses the database driver could not be completed. If the driver is a Microsoft driver, make sure the driver file isn’t damaged, and if it is, reinstall the driver by reinstalling Microsoft Query. For other drivers, contact
your database administrator or driver vendor.‘
The export option works for me on my machine and also tested it out on other users' machines without issues. The list is currently holds 29763 items.
    1. Created a view that filter the list to show few items, and the user was able to export without issues.
    2. Followed the steps in the following Blog:
http://www.sharepointserverrecovery.com/blog/troubleshooting-problems-when-exporting-sharepoint-list-data-to-excel-spreadsheet-and-fixing-database-corruption/ and the user was able to export the original list.
    3. My colleagues and I don't have any issues exporting to Excel. (Note: even my test account, that does not have any special permissions or members of any SharePoint group(s)).
    4. Some Blog/Forums suggest to increase Threshold limit in Central Admin, which we don't want to do, since the issue only affect certain users.
Any idea on how to troubleshoot/resolve the issue?
    Thanks,
    Yassar

Do they have to export all the information or is a subset of it ok?
Creating an index on the columns that your users interact with the most and then creating views that limit the returned results will be useful.  This will then allow an export.
