Reuse of BPEL Artifacts

Hello,
I am trying to utilize a technique from Clements' SOA Best Practice article ...

It it, he mentions being able to re-use artifacts associated with a partner link - specifically, one tied to a database adapter service. I have followed his example and copied the 4 files mentioned to a new BPEL project. I can create a new partner link - and provide the wsdl using the "Browse WSDL files from local file system". This seems to work fine. I save everything - and bring up my new partner link again. I then try to step through the db adapter wizard. But when it gets to the screen on choosing the table - I have a blank screen. Am I missing some step that ties the wsdl to the toplink mappings?
Any help is appreciated. I am hoping I can use this technique to save a lot of re-work as I re-engineer a bunch of work done for a POC.

Update: If I attach a receive to this partner link (it does a DB poll) and deploy it, it seems to work fine. So Clements' process is correct. But it looks like it "breaks" the JDev view of the adapter service and would only allow for manual changes - not GUI changes. Anyone know how to fix it so the GUI still works with the copied artifacts?

If you were using WLS 9.0, then a deployment plan could be used to override the JNDI name. ANd you could package the ejbs as a library so you wouldn't have to include them in every app and deal with bug fixes, versions etc.
Assuming you're not using 9.0, you could tweak the weblogic-ejb-jar.xml (with a preprocessor like perl or sed etc) before you insert it into each app.
Or, you could take advantage of an undocumented feature where ${APPNAME} in your ejb's jndi-name will be replaced with the application's name when it's bound into JNDI.

populating conditions.

Using UDDI to create reusable ESB/BPEL artifacts

I would like to make my ESB artifacts reusable by removing end-point details from ESB configuration and having that kind of detail in an UDDI. It does not seem that the ESB has the ability to do UDDI inquiry's in runtime. Does anyone now of a work around? Have played around with the endpoint properties beta feature in Jdev to achieve some sort of abstraction, but this is not good enough (http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B31017_01/integrate.1013/b28211/adapter_services.htm#CHDJJDHB)
From BPEL there seems to be a way of at least using UDDI service keys (http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/soa/soa-suite-best-practices/reusable-soa.html).
Any input would be much appreciated.

BPEL and DbAdapter

Hello,
I am using BPEL and DbAdapter to insert a row into a table. Say, TABLE A with (ID NUMBER, NAME VARCHAR2(20).
I would like to use "Perform an Operation on a Table" and use native sequencing for ID.
Is there a way to return the ID value within a single invoke to DbAdapter?

Bpel DBAdapter, SQLServer and Jdeveloper

Hi,
Has someone managed to use the DBAdapter Wizzard to get information from an SQLServer database.
I have set a DataBaseConnection to that database and it works fine I get tables and data on jdeveloper but dbadapter using that connection does not work.
Any hints ?

BPMN to BPEL transformation coverage

Can anyone provide a list of BPMN elements that can be transformed into BPEL elements to see which transformations are supported by Oracle BPA and which not?

Here are the mappings from the quick start guide:
- Notification Services are transformed into a Business Scope upon BPEL transformation. The corresponding Notification service as well as the BPEL artifacts for invoking the Notification service are created within the business scope.
- Human tasks are converted to a human workflow business scope upon BPEL transformation. The Task Service gets automatically generated as well as the BPEL artifacts for invoking the Task service also gets generated. The Notification/Reminder notes get translated to business annotations.
- Automated activities are converted to a business scope upon BPEL transformation.
- Business Service is converted to a Partner Link upon BPEL transformation. If the Business Service is associated with a concrete WSDL, it is converted to a concrete Partner Link. Otherwise it is converted into an abstract Partner Link. If Represented by is set to "invoke", an invoke activity is created inside the business scope and is linked to the Partner Link. If Represented by is set to "receive", a receive activity is created inside the business scope and is linked to the Partner Link. The Sensor definition is converted in to a business annotation.
- XOR, AND and OR gateways are converted to switch and case statements upon BPEL transformation.
- All Business Data in the Business Process Diagram are converted to Variables upon BPEL transformation. If the Business Data is associated with an XSD, the XSD is exported and the Variable in the BPEL skeletal process generated is then set to the XSD type. Otherwise, the Variables are set to String type.
- Business Rules are converted into a Decision Service. The free text in the Rules field is converted into business annotation.

Error while fetching Stored procedure from JDev DB Adapter

I am facing a problem while configuring stored procedures from Jdeveloper using DB Adapter. I am using Sql Server 2005 as my database,Jdeveloper version is 10.1.3.1.Bpel Version is 10.1.3.3. Connection to the Sqlserver 2005 database is fine, but it shows only views and tables. I get the following error message when I try to add the sql stored procedure call
"An error occured while obtaining the database schemas.Verify that the database connection is valid , and is supported"
Can someone help me please.

I think you have two problems here. First, JDeveloper 10.1.3.1 doesn't support SQL Server stored procedures. There is a command-line utility that you can use to generate the required BPEL artifacts (WSDL and XSD). Second, you're using a 10.1.3.1 design-time with a 10.1.3.3 runtime. These are not compatible so you will likely run into namespace issues when you try to run your BPEL processes. You should upgrade your JDeveloper to 10.1.3.3. JDeveloper will support third-party databases in 11.1.1 including SQL Server 2005 (but not 2000), IBM DB2 v8.x and v9.x, DB2 AS/400, and MySQL. JDeveloper will support MySQL v5.2.6 and above because the INFORMATION_SCHEMA.PARAMETERS table was added at that time. The PARAMETERS table does not exist in MySQL versions prior to v5.2.6 so you will have to use the command-line utility.

Calling Stored Procedure Using OSB 10g R3

I wanted to know what is the best way to call a Stored Proc from OSB 10 g R3.
I am using MS SQL 2005 server.

The DB Adapter does, in fact, support SQL Server in 10.1.3.x. The adapter configuration wizard does not support SQL Server so a command-line utility is necessary in order to generate the BPEL artifacts (XSD and WSDL). Once the artifacts are created, it is very easy to create a partner link to a SQL Server stored procedure. The adapter runtime has no restrictions beyond what is stated in the documentation. Note that the wizard will support SQL Server in 11g.

Question about CEP Naming Conventions and or Standards

Hello,
CEP is new to the organization that I am working with. I have been asked to draft a few standards around CEP to help promote standardization and proper reuse of CEP artifacts. Can anyone share with me examples of CEP artifacts with a naming convention or their experiences with naming conventions around CEP in general. This is a living standards document for us. We plan on using CEP heavily going forward. Your experiences will help us start off on the right foot.

Oracle CEP supports reuse of components in several ways. For example, you can design your application as a set of modules that can be deployed independently (different teams can develop each module). Modules can register services, such as an event source or event consumer, and these services can be used by other modules. So, it's possible to plug modules developed by different teams of developers together and reuse them in different applications or environments. A component instance registers itself as a service when its advertise attribute is set to true in the Spring application context that defines a module.

It is able to deploy the BPEL artifact but unable for the decision service, i.e. the Business Rule. I've been looking at web resources for answers but unable to find one. Your assistance is much appreciated and my gut feeling is that it is only a minor glitch which I need to fix. Thank you very much everyone.

Hi Everyone,
I've resolved the error. It was the fact that I was pointing to the wrong rmi port. I found out by typing out the "opmnctl status -l" on the command line and realised that my rmi port was 12401 instead of 23791. Hence, under the "deployDecisionServices" namespace in the build.xml file, I modified it from "rmiport="${rmiport}" to "rmiport="12401"" and deploy it and everything works. "error: \lib (access is denied)" when trying to deploy

I have a sql server stored proc that I have successfully created the artifacts for as specified in documentation I had rec'd in a prior thread. Now, when I go to deploy, I immediately get the error:
"error: \lib (access is denied)"
I have verified the path to the lib folder as specified in my genterate.bat file to create the artifacts. It is shown below. I am not sure what I need to do.

You are right, theer are some changes incorporated in the latest MLR # 16 on the configurations files and on the dehydration store metrics(such as performance, fields,..).
However, I would not suggest to continue working on olite, even for Development/Test purposes as you might get stuck with strange errors...and the only solution would be to re-install SOA Suite if your olite gets corrupted. There might be ways to gets your olite back to position, but trust me..its not so simple.
Also, when you develop and stress test all your testcase scenarios in an TEST Adv installation, its simple to mimic the same in actual production box, as you exactly know its behavior.
So, go for a brand new SOA 10.1.3.4 MLR # 5 (or) 10.1.3.3.1 MLR # 16 SOA Suite Advanced installation with Oracle DB 10.2.0.3 as its dehydration store.

How to acess MDS artifacts in OSB at Run time

Hi all,
I have a requirement like , i need to access some of the artifacts at run time from MDS. is it possible?
i could import the the artifacts by using http protocal , below is the link for same, in this duplicate of artifacts will be copied to local working space.

i have seen we couldnt use absolute pathe in osb to import any thing, we should use only relative path,without giving any absolute path how to access the MDS artifacts?

don't think you will be able toe reuse the artifacts in the mds.
the xsds/wsdls etc need to be 'registered' in the osb workspace to be able to use them for other artifacts like proxyservices, you can use for example an oramds import ...that won't work
you could have 1 place where you store the artifacts for mds and also use that location for 'shared' resources in your osb.
on deploy of osb, osb will use this folder to construct the sbconfig.jar and on deploy of the composite and mds, you will also use this folder to import it to the mds database.
not an ideal solution, but like that you can store the artifacts on 1 location and reuse it in both soasuite and osb

Unique rollback in a BPEL process using web services

We are a cellular communication company using Oracle DB (10g) and Oracle Forms to run our business applications (customer care and the like). We have planned a system migration using the SOA approach with the latest release of Oracle BPEL Suite (business logic), Oracle ADF BC (presentation level), Oracle OAS (application server) and JDeveloper (application development IDE).
Within our current applications we have processes that perform several tasks (inserts, updates and/or deletes on the same DB) as part of one atomic DB transaction. Using the SOA approach we’ve deemed those tasks as being ‘services’ that we, let’s say for the sake of argument, could implement either as web services (so as to be published for reuse) or as stored procedures encapsulated via DB adapters (BPEL lexicon).
Our biggest challenge, and hence our question to the SOA world, is how to attain that same unique transaction. We understand that there is no one perfect approach, for the ‘solution’ depends on too many factors and choices; what we’d like to know are past experiences people had or, at best, what do people consider what the best practices in the industry are regarding this matter.
Approach A: all services are implemented as DB adapters (stored procedures and the like).
PROS: one single DB rollback should any service fail to execute properly and so undo all changes made so far.
CONS: highly coupled, non-visible components (via UDDI); impossibility to manage, control and audit (via WS Manager) components; weak/poor SOA Governance.
Approach B: all services are implemented as web services.
PROS: loosely coupled, self-contained, and web accessible visible components (via UDDI) besides the ease to manage, control and audit (via WS Manager); strong SOA Governance.
CONS: since each web service is a ‘different’ transaction with its own ‘commit’, a unique rollback transaction for the whole process will not be possible should a WS fail, for previous WSs will have already committed their data changes before doing the rollback.
Approach C: services implemented as a mix of web services and DB Adapters.
PROS: those of Approach B for web services.
CONS: those of Approach A (DB adapters) + those of Approach B (web services).

So, the 64,000 dollar question is how to attain a single transaction when you have web services as part of your process? Do we need to ’build/create’ a schema/functionality similar to the ‘DB-undo-segment’ in order to obtain a single rollback transaction for the whole process or does the BPEL COMPENSATE delivers this functionality somehow?
Are we not seeing the obvious? Are we not seeing the forest because we’re looking at a tree? Please keep in mind that we are using Oracle BPEL.

Hi Marinus,
you are absolutely right and not missing anything. OWSM does not free you from taking additional measures to block direct interaction with the unsecure WebService from not "authorized" clients. You must restrict the http response to the OWSM host only (either in the Apache or the OC4J configuration). See the related documentation.

Unable to get the BPEL process in esb console

Hi,
I am facing an issue with code generated using artifact generator in FP 2.4.
When I deploy a Provider ABCS process(generated through artifcat generator), it does not appear in the BPEL system of my esb console because of which i am not able to create a routing service for that BPEL process in my ESB.
I am able to find only those bpel processes in the esb console which are not generated through artifact generator.
kindly suggest what can be done.

I assume there are no compilation errors and you are able to deloy the process successfully. Do you see any errors in the log file while deploying the process? You may want to check the $SOA_HOME/opmn/logs/default~oc4j_soa~xxx.log file.
Do you see the process in BPEL Console and able to unit-test it?
