Reverse-engineer Gradient Tool or Gradient Eye-dropper Tool?

I'm thinking of a tool where you could:
Take an existing photo that has some kind of fill/gradient in it.
Define what type of fill you have identified (e.g. radial, linear, etc.).
Mask out regions of the photo that have nothing to do with the fill.
Define the starting and ending points of the fill.
For example, take this photo:
I've identified a radial fill:
Now I want to mask out the parts of the photo that have nothing to do with the actual fill, as well as define where I think the starting and ending points should be. I've also excluded the JPG artifacts from the border of the gradient, because they had some darker colors in there that I don't want to be calculated. Note that the starting point in this example has no possible color that could be identified, but it may be *guessed* what the color should be, based on the rest of the fill, programmatically.
Lastly, I should be given the original fill when I complete the tool. This fill would have a starting and ending point, but also 3 intermediate colors defined in various locations. Also, the radial fill is up 15% on the Y axis. Programmatically, from the information provided above, this should be able to be calculated.
Note. I'm using Corel PHOTO-PAINT to illustrate what I'm talking about here, because that's what I'm most comfortable using.
Don't hate.
Edit: In hindsight, I really don't think you should need to draw a line or specify which gradient you've identified. Ideally, that too should be handled automatically! Programmatically, this shouldn't be an issue. As a programmer, knowing how things work from the back end, I feel I'm licensed to say such a statement. Additionally, there should be a threshold slider that compensates for JPG compression and such by blurring the gradient a bit and getting rid of nodes that are too close together.

Re-read my 10-point post in your other thread. Slice out the grad, set the rulers to % and you can place points pretty much exactly. The info palette will tell you where to place them. I can tell you from experience you do not want to place 10 to 20 points on a grad, unless it's running the full gamut.
I completely understand the step process of what you are suggesting, but it doesn't solve every scenario.
I found that in your example, the manual process took me about 20 seconds. It took me about 10 seconds to cut the mask (for helping the computer out). And to quote you, something else I know from bitter experience: cutting masks is tedious. I'm definitely not saying this is a useless tool. But I wouldn't wish the PS engineers to stop working on more useful features.
Suggesting a feature does not in any way suggest that PS engineers should "stop working on more useful features." My feature requests are simply that–feature requests! Whether great or small, they still remain feature requests. However Adobe decides to prioritize them (if they decide to implement them at all) is a completely different story.
And cutting masks? Yeah, if you need to deal with feathering and all that it can be quite tedious, but this is just a simple mask around the edges of the baby.
Why are you fixated on exactly the same grad? Close enough will be close enough. If you can't tell the difference with the images side by side, isn't that a match?
If you can't tell the difference, then yes! Problem is–I've found–sometimes it takes a bit of trial and error to get it just right and I'd rather do it right the first time!
How many of these do you envision doing (at 10-seconds saving a pop)?
Not many. Again, refer to the previous remark about Adobe's choice of priority. I'm not suggesting this is SO IMPORTANT OMG PLZ ADD THIS FEATURE NOW!!!
And why don't you have access to the original layer files with grad fills to drag to your new doc?
Because, in this case, it was an online, Flash-based tool that was having server issues and not responding! Instead of using their crappy tool with horrible compositing, I decided to do it manually to make it look *way* better than the product they were going to produce. Of course, I wouldn't have access to some online, Flash-based tool's image. It's not like they had a PSD download or something. It wasn't mine in the first place! I had to screenshot it just to get it into Photoshop!
I've certainly duped grads before, but I think the thing I'm failing to understand is under which circumstances would this tool save anyone more than a few minutes a week. I'm sure it's just a limit to my imagination or experience...
Your confusion is all aimed at priority, once again. In my opinion, even if it saves one minute a week, that's enough to add the feature. I'm all about efficiency, shaving off minutes or seconds anywhere they can be shaved off! Of course, tackle the larger efficiency obstacles first. Doing anything else would be–well, inefficient!

  • My paint bucket/gradient/paint brush tool icon is now a eye dropper...

I've been playing around in CS5 for about a couple months now and today, (not sure if I hit a special function/command) but my icons when the paint brush, gradient and the paint bucket is now a eye dropper icon.. It's kind of annoying and I'm not sure how to reverse this.
    Any feedback would be great!!
    Thanks!!

Did you read the thread? Did you read the tech doc? Are you running any of the programs that are associated with the conflict? Did you try any of the advice offered? As the tech doc explains, symptoms vary, but one listed is:
Tools behave as if the Shift or Option keys  are pressed.
Normally you would get the Eyedropper Tool using Paint Bucket, Gradient Tool, Brush Tool etc IF THE OPTION KEY was pressed.
Reread the thread and see if any of the solutions (including an "unofficial" download fix written by Jesper at post #72)
If you have any of the apps listed, make sure they are disabled. I would log out, and log back in and restart PS while holding down the Shift+Option+Command keys. You'll get a small dialog to OK deleting the preference file.
If that does not work, try downloading Jesper's fix.
There is no official solution yet from Apple or Adobe, to my knowledge.

  • Gradients and the eye dropper tool

When you're editing a gradient within the shape (as opposed to in the Gradients palette), is there any way to use the eye dropper tool to sample an existing color? In-shape gradient editing (or whatever Adobe calls it) is useless without the eye dropper.

Hi, I came looking for an answer to this very question... but now I have figured out a way to do what you want to do.
    1. Select the object you want to make into a gradient and make it so... it'll be the dreaded white to black
    2. Select the colour that has the fil that you want to use for one end of the gradient
    3. Now Select the gradient and notice that the fill you previously selected is in the "last color" box in the color tab group.
    4. Now drag the color from the "last color" box to the gradient color box
    5. repeat as necessary... click color, then gradient, then drag the previous colour to the gradient color box.
    Hope this helps :-)

  • Pulling color out of a gradient w eye dropper

Hello all - this is my first posting here, but I've spent quite a bit of time searching down my answer and haven't found anything.
I have an illustration that contains a lot of gradients. I am trying to simplify the illustration in order to make the file size smaller by removing all of my gradients and replacing the current shape with new shapes containing solid colors.
(I am trying this method because I have tried other methods that have not decreased thefile size enough, such as merging)
I have locked my layer and created a new layer above in order to use my pen tool to create the new shapes. The problem is when I use the eye dropper to get the part of the gradient I need for that shape, it fills the new shape with the gradient, not the solid color I am sampling.
Is there a way to do what I have described?
    Thanks!

It's not really as accurate as it might be but try holding down the shift key to sample the sereen value at that point.

  • Gradient Colour Goes To Eye Dropper Colour Picker?

    Hello,
Whenever I try to edit the gradient colour by clicking on the colour bar itself (second in from the left, http://prntscr.com/6vfu4u) it comes up with the eye dropper tool instead of the normal colour picker.
(It changes to this once I click on that colour box to change the gradient; http://prntscr.com/6vfuj3. It also does the same thing through Layer > Blending Options > Gradient Overlay)
Any idea why or how I can get back to the normal colour picker?
    Thanks!

Wow I feel stupid, the colour picker window was opening on my second monitor which was turned off -.-

  • How do I get my eye dropper tool to show up?

Somehow, my eye dropper disappeared. I can't find it in my tool bar.  I've searched for at least an hour now, and I really need it.
Can someone PULEEEEZ help me get it back?

That's really interesting... so no Eyedropper tool here?
What tools do you have instead?

  • I made a reverse radial gradient to look like "sunlight" and I would like to move it to the top of my image to appear like the light is coming from above, but it won't allow me to move the radial gradient anywhere.  I have CS6.  Help please :)

Assuming you did this with a Fill Layer, double-click the thumbnail in the Layers panel to bring up the Gradient Fill dialog, see to it that the [ ] Align with layer checkbox is set, and (while the Gradient Fill dialog is still up) try dragging the gradient to where you want it on the main display.  Then [ OK ] out of the Gradient Fill dialog.

  • Eye Dropper Tool (Color Picker Tool) not working correctly - Premiere CC - Windows 8 - Multiple Displays

I'm running Windows 8, Premiere CC 2014 with two monitors. The eye dropper tool (color picker tool) isn't working correctly. It is selecting colors that are not the colors being hovered over. I've reasearched and see solutions to the problem when occurring with Mac, but do not see a solution for Windows. When I disconnect the second monitor, the eye dropper tool works correctly (as described by Mac users). I deleted any profiles for the montors that weren't the same, and still having the issue. I've also tried putting the source monitor on the second monitor, and tried sampling color from there... same result.

    Hello All,
Problem solved...I reset all tools in the Tool Preset window. Seems to be working.
    Hope this helps someone...
    Cheers!

  • Enquiry:  Any tool to reverse engineer an existing db schema in Oracle 8i

    Dear All,
Do you know whether Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler (3.1.1.703) supports Oracle 8i? If not, is there any tool that can be used to reverse engineer an existing database schema in Oracle 8i?
    Your early reply is appreciated.
    Thanks a lot.
    LAWRENCE CHOW

That's a pity. The initial version of Data Modeler used to support import from Oracle 8i.
You could try setting up an ODBC connection to your database and using the JDBC tab (rather than the Oracle tab) when entering the Connection details into Data Modeler.
Alternatively, if you can get hold of an earlier version of Data Modeler (e.g. version 3.0 or earlier), you could try this (and if it works you could then upgrade your model to the current version).

  • Trouble with the Eye Dropper tool

The Eye Dropper tool is acting funky. It was preventing me from picking up the color of my template when in outline mode - instead selecting no fill and no stroke. I finally got it to work by unchecking "Appearance" in the tool options. I didn't actually change any settings inside appearance (everything inside is still checked). That did allow me to select the templates color, but now it is also selecting my "path color". If my layer's color is set to Cyan for example, eye dropper actually selects cyan if i click on the path.
Is there a way to allow template color selection but avoid path color selection?
EDIT: I just discovered that these settings don't even pick up the template color correctly. They choose the color of the auto-dim/opacity that occurs when setting a template.

When working from a template in outline mode, put the template on a template layer (see manual on how to do that). Then work on another layer. Only that second layer should be in outline mode.
Then, when picking up colors from a template pixel image, press the shift key when picking up the color with the eyedropper. Of course what Jacob says about screen values remains.
When asking questions in the forum, please be very specific about the tools you use and the artwork you use them on.

  • Photoshop 7.0, hue/saturation command is connecting to eye dropper tool  HELP!

by using the short cut keys and the drop down menu for hue/saturation it connects to the eye dropper tool and locks up.  Hue/saturation window never opens.  Not sure what is going on.  Running PS7.0 on this computer Windows 7 with no problems for about a year until today.
Uninstalled and reinstalled the program twice today and still acting the same.  All other commands seem to be functioning properly.

For unexpected Photoshop problems, especially those not solved by a reinstall, the most usual advice is to clear Photoshop's preferences to defaults.  You can do this by pressing and holding Control - Shift - Alt immediately after cold-starting Photoshop.  If you get the keys down fast enough, it will prompt you to confirm deletion of the current preferences.

  • CS5 Eye dropper tool changes bottom color instead of top one

For some unknown reason, my eye dropper tool changed from when I use it to select a color, it used to be the top one. But now it is changing the bottom one which is causing more steps. How do I get it back to what I click on changes the top color at the bottom of the tool bar? I've tried clicking on the color boxes to bring front to back but no luck.
    Thank you.

  • Eye dropper tool

I have applied the Glow with Zoom text behavior to a line of text and used the eye dropper to colour the glow parameter....all works well. I then duplicate the text layer and amend it. I wanted to keep the same glow colour but it defaults to the yellow colour it came with. If I use the eye dropper to change to desired colour nothing happens. I have tried to duplicate the whole layer and duplicate the sequence text behavior but nothing happens

I had noticed some problems with the eyedropper tool in Mo3 that were fixed in Mo4, but I didn't encounter this one. Can you drag the style from the one you like onto your new text?

  • White lines after eye dropper tool?

Currently doing a project and I've been using the eye dropper tool and then filling in with the background colour and the white line that i used to create the shape goes, which is what I want to happen. However now all of a sudden, it is not going after I use the eye dropper tool, and its really ticking me off!
    Any help?

The only part of your description that I understand is that it involves the eyedropper and that you are severely irritated.
Using the eyedropper tool on what? Filling in what with what background color? What white line/what shape? The white line goes…where? Please tell us precisely what you have, what you are trying to accomplish, exactly what you have done to try to accomplish it, and what has happened instead of what you expected. And what OS and Illustrator version you are using. Perhaps a screenshot or two would help us to help you.

  • Eye dropper tool between documents

I have two open files in illustrator and I want to use the eye dropper tool to select a color from one document and use it in the other. Is there a way to do this?

    You don't.
Perhaps there is a plug in but I do not know of it.
Edit I am wrong You bring into focus the document you want to have the object change color and select it.
Then bring into focus the document with the object you wish to pick up the color from
then do not select that objectt but rather simply click with the eyedropper tool and drag the eye dropper tool on to the document that contains the object you wish to change color.
    That should do it
    I got it wrong again.
What you actually do is bring inot focu the document witht he object you want to change and selecct the object
then click the object with the eyedropper tool and hold the mouse down and drag iut to the document object with the color you want to bepicked up and that will do it.
