Reverting to a virgin system with pacman

I'd like to revert my system to a virgin state with pacman (i.e. a fresh install without nuking the root partition and installing via the CD).  Is there an easy way I can remove all the packages except for the system-base ones, alsa, etc or am I just better off nuking the partition and installing from the CD?

Pacpal has an option to find files which don't belong to any installed package. For example, if you wanted to find all unpackaged files in /etc, you would run this command:
pacpal --list-unpkgd /etc
After removing all but the base packages, it should be useful in finding leftover files. As already mentioned, some system configuration files are not considered part of the package that creates them and you shouldn't remove them, so use it with caution.

  • Begining with a virgin system.

    Hi Experts,
I am really junior with BW. I have working in a project for two months filling infoObjects and infoCubes, creating precess chains and reporting. But i know nothing about modeling the initial infocubes and preparing the system from the begining.
Is there any guide step by step to configure a virgin system to start working? I'm working with SAP ECC 6.0.
I think the first i need is to create a Source system, but when I try to do this I get this error message:
No entry for BW_USER in table RSADMIN available
    Message no. RSAR059
    Diagnosis
    Missing entry in table RSADMIN
    System Response
Creation of source system was terminated.
    Procedure
In Customizing, maintain the Proposal for Users in Source System
I have followed this procedure, and i put ALEREMOTE user there, but this does not work.
Can anyone please give me some tips or any guide? Or any solution to my error message?
    Thank-you all!

  • System upgrade fails with pacman - phc-intel requires kernel26 2.6.31

    Hello,
I'm a relative newbie to archlinux, so I hope I'm not asking a too stupid question ...
I have installed arch on an IBM Thinkpad X40. Was now on extended holidays and haven't done a system upgrade for a while. Wanted to do this now and pacman -Syy works fine. However, when I then start the upgrade with pacman -Su, the following error message occurs:
    :: Starte komplette Systemaktualisierung...
    :: portmap durch core/rpcbind ersetzen? [J/n] J
    Löse Abhängigkeiten auf...
    Suche nach Zwischen-Konflikten...
Fehler: Konnte den Vorgang (Kann Abhängigkeiten nicht erfüllen) nicht vorbereiten
    :: phc-intel: benötigt kernel26<2.6.31
translated into English it basically means that pacman wants to replace portmap with rpcbind. However, the following error message occurs whether or not I say yes. The error messages says that it cannot fulfill the dependencies as phc-intel requires kernel26<2.6.31. The strange thing is that my kernel at the moment is 2.6.29.
A first run of pacman -u worked fine but only upgraded pacman itself. I had a pacman.conf.pacnew in /etc which I renamed to pacman.conf and kept the old one as a backup. However, this also didn't change anything.
I hope you guys can help me out, thanks in advance,
    F.

The update will be trying to install a new kernel, which is why you're getting the error. For packages in the repos, a new one would be built that's compatible with the new kernel. Since it looks like phc-intel is from the AUR you'll need to build a new version yourself.
Edit - that's what I get for stepping away for a bit, you already got a response and fixed it

  • Root partition suddenly full while updating packages with Pacman

    Hello
I'm not sure if this is a problem with Pacman, but my root partition seems to have become completely full while updating my system using pacman -Syu. Before updating anything, there seems to have been an update to a new version of Pacman (3.3.1-1) that needed to be installed before updating packages.
In the middle of the updates, I got this error:
error: error writing to file '/var/cache/pacman/pkg/openoffice-base-3.1.1-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz': No space left on device
Also, I don't know if this is related, but I got a lot of 'not found' errors after that.

Also, I haven't restarted my system yet. Should I try and see what happens?
    Thanks!

This happened to me recently. I could not restart my laptop properly due to lack of space on my root partition.
The error during boot was along the lines of:-
Starting D-BUS system messagebus   - Failed
Failed to start message bus: Failed to close "var/run/dbus.pid": No space left on drive
    Hardware Abstraction Layer - Failed
everything else during the boot was as normal till I started to type in my username - but couldn't because the keyboard was inactive.
I used a Wolvix live CD to investigate and found a QT4 file in the packman cache which was 6.9GB in size (compared to the normal 27mb size). Once that was deleted and the drive/partition error checked everything was back to normal. So before you reboot I would definitely recommend clearing any oversize file out of your packman cache, or just clearing the whole cache.

  • [SOLVED] Overwrite files with pacman.

    Hello all
I know that pacman, as a design feature, does not overwrite files by default. I've read the post and the wiki about it.
But I've a situation where I would need to overwrite dozens of files, in different directories, and it would be very nice, If possible, to make an exception to this rule.
I dont know how, but I've messed up an Kdemod upgrade. It stopped working and I cant uninstall it, because pacman doesnt find the appropriate groups (Kdemod-complete and Kdemod-uninstall).
On the other hand, I cant simply reinstall it, or kde[extra], because pacman gives dozens "leftover file" messages in different directories, and refuses to overwrite them.
I just want a way to reinstall KDEmod, at least to try to remove everything with "pacman -Rd kdemod-uninstall" and start from scratch, if it doesnt work. And, I would like to escape manually removing all the files in different directories or a full system reinstall.
    Any Ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Moderator comment:  That is true as far as the synatax of Pacman command is concerned -- BUT -- using 'force', unless you know exactly what you're doing, is not recommended.  It can cause serious breakage.
In fact, the -f flag was deliberately deprecated in favor of --force specifically to make it less likely that someone will try using it.

    thx

check which package owns the files with 'pacman -Qo $pathtofile'
If it is now owned by a package you can safely force the package to install with 'pacman -Sf kernel26'
If the files are owned by a package then there they are conflicting and the path to follow will be different for each situation.
If you are not sure what to do post here which package (if any) owns the files.

I have recently acquired an update for my mac OX the program being the snow leopard, i have been forever inserting the disk only to have it ejected by my mac, hence, i am unable to update my system with snow leopard, what can i do, as i have just paid out money for something which

Worked like a charm and resolved my problem totally. The only issue I had is that, unlike the Computer (Mac OS). the iPad doesn't give constant visibility to what it is doing (feedback), so I wasn't initially sure it had done anything.
When I opened my emailed message with .vcf file attached, and tapped the .vcf attachment icon, I saw activity on the icon for just a few seconds, then it reverted to the original with nothing apparently happening. After about 30 seconds, the secondary menut popped up indicating the transfer of 1200 addresses would be completed, if I approved the action. Another 10 to 15 seconds then transpired before the completed Contact list appeared on the ipad. So you must be patient, if you have a large Addressbook. That's reasonable, but unexpected lack of feedback left me wondering, like so many other things on the iPad.
THank you for the assist. Apparently Apples Mac Genius people did not know this procedure, and I will pass it on to my local Apple Store Instructor.

  • [SOLVED]wlanwep encryption is failing after system update(pacman -Syu)

After a system update with "pacman -Syu" my wlan encryption does not work anymore.
If I switch off encryption on my access point, I can communicate without any problems.
I have currently two wlans active, one with encryption, one without. I use the following iwconfig settings
    iwconfig wlan0 essid my_open_wlan
    iwconfig wlan0 essid my_wep_wlan key s:my_wep_password
In the first case I get the connection, in the second I cannot transmit over the network(Destination Host Unreachable).
    lspci:

This is the output for the open wlan. If I try to connect to the encrypted wlan with "iwconfig wlan0 essid "my_encr_wlan" key s:my_wep_password", the iwconfig command gives me:

I have tried wpa_supplicant as well with the same result.
    Can anybody give me hint?

Wep and ath9k has been buggy for me for a long time now - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Never got around it, adding "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" into /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf seemed to work for some time. You could give it a try. The network I have problems with is at the university, they use wep + vpn to connect. I can connect fine (like in your last iwconfig), but dhcpd times out.
If you have control over the network, you could just switch to wpa - safer anyway. Or search the forum for "atheros wep", it is a somewhat common problem I think.
P.S.: please use code tags when posting console output.

  • SMSY define ERP system with Process Integration instance

    Hello,
We have connected new installed ERP system (ERP 6.0 EHP3) to central SLD (SAP SM EHP1).
But we can see the strange situation.
SMSY define automatically this ERP system as the system with Process Integration instance but not ECC Server instance.
We have not installed Usage Type PI in the ERP system.
Also we have old ERP system in SLD. It is visible as SAP ERP system with ECC Server instance.
What is the strange behaviour of SMSY? What should we do and how can we correct this definition in SMSY?

    Hi,
Check what you have selected as "Main Instance" in SMSY under tab Software Components.
    Follow this link.
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_smehp1/helpdata/en/84/24f94a1ae44a14b83529f5890a6ff5/content.htm
    Hope this helps.
    Feel free to revert back.

  • Error with Pacman

Yesterday I tried to do an upgrade of my system via pacman -Syu and I was told to update pacman (and about two other things which I can't remember what they were) and now I am getting the following error when I try to run pacman -Syu again:
arch linux - pacman:error while loading shared libraries: liblzma.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I found a thread which has a number of fixes but I am unsure which one I should use. The thread is here:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=77382
So I am unsure how to solve this. I would appreciate help on fixing this as I am still a beginner.
    Thanks in advance.

  • I messed with pacman

I honestly don't know what I was trying to do, but I messed with pacman and deleted a whole bunch of files from /var under pacman. I don't even remember what folders it was. Damn I feel stupid
Now every time I want to install anything (dillo or azureus recently) it asks me to install loads of other stuff like glibc, bash, binutils, all the system stuff.
How can I get away with this and return to my lovely arch system
    thanx
Sorry for being such a newbie...

Now my wife is going to kill me!! (again...)
I feel it would be a bit absurd to redo the whole install only because of package management. Now I'm reinstalling all the basic deps it asks me for and I,ll see from there. I'm hoping the worse that will happen is that it'll override my settings (which is not a big deal). I'll let you know what happens.
Edit: Well that didn't work out well at all! I'm pulling out my arch cd now. Let this serve as a warning to all the stupid newbs like me.

Maybe "yaourt" is something you're searching for.
It's in AUR. With it you can search fo packages in repositories and AUR at same time, in colors
Well, to upgrade packages that have newer versions (so, ye just upgrad ) you can do the following then
    yaourt -Sybu --aur
This will upgrad your whole system to newest package versions including the AUR and with using PKGBUILDS for current, extra repositories.
