RMAN-00554 with ORA-12638
Hi,
I'm receiving the following error when I try to start RMAN from a command prompt. I can connect to the database from the Enterprise Manager and from SQLPlus without any problems. I've read about removing the sqlnet.authentication_services line from sqlnet.ora, but I don't know if I should since the database connects fine outside of RMAN:

Hi,
In 'C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\NETWORK\ADMIN', my files look like this (the line in sqlnet.ora is still present-- i haven't removed or changed it yet):
TNSNAMES.ORA
# Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
DB1 =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = host1)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = db1)
SQLNET.ORA:
# This file is actually generated by netca. But if customers choose to
# install "Software Only", this file wont exist and without the native
# authentication, they will not be able to connect to the database on NT.
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS)
NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
LISTENER.ORA:
# listener.ora Network Configuration File: C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\NETWORK\ADMIN\listener.ora
# Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
SID_LIST_LISTENER =
(SID_LIST =
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = DB1)
(ORACLE_HOME = C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\Db_1)
(GLOBAL_DBNAME = DB1)
LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = host1)(PORT = 1521))
I don't get ORA-01031 in RMAN with this configuration, but I do get ORA-12638.
Otherwise, I can connect fine to my database if I don't use 'connect / as sysdba'.
Thanks again,
Nora

I have set up SharePoint 2013 Foundation, SharePoint Reporting Services and SQL Server 2012 in a single server. I then created a Data Connection to Oracle 11g. Upon testing the connection, it throws the error “ORA-12638: Credential retrieval failed”.
Given below are the steps of installation and configuration.
Installation till basic authentication:
The installation has been done in a
single server.
Installed SQL Server 2012 (Developer version).
Selected only the following features:
Database Engine Services
Analysis Services
Reporting Services – SharePoint
Reporting Services Add-in for SharePoint Products
Management Tools – Basic
- Management Tools - Complete
2. Installed SQL Server 2012 SP1.
3. Installed SQL Server 2012 SP2.
4. Installed SharePoint Foundation 2013.
5. Created web application (without Kerberos; we did not even create the SPNs).
The application pool has been configured to use Reporting Services account since it is a single server installation. This account has been registered as a managed
account.
6. Created Site Collection.
7. Verified that Reporting Services is not installed.
8. Installed SharePoint Reporting Services from SharePoint 2013 Management Shell.
9. Verified that Reporting Services is installed.
10. Created a new SQL Server Reporting Services Service Application and associated the Web Application to the new SQL server Reporting Services Service Application.
11. Verified that SQL Server Reporting Services Service Application and its proxy have started. Reset IIS.
12. Created a Site.
13. Created a Data Connection library with “Report Data Source” content type.
14. Created a Report Model library with “Report Builder Model” content type.
15. Created a Report library with “Report Builder Report” content type.
16. Uploaded an SMDL to the Report Model library.
17. Added the top level site to Local Intranet instead of as a Trusted Site in the browser settings.
18. Able to create and save a report using Report Builder.
Hence, basic authentication is working and SSRS is able to connect to Oracle database.
Next we have to configure Kerberos settings between SharePoint and SQL Server.
Implementation of Kerberos authentication
In the Report Server machine, opened the file C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\WebServices\Reporting\rsreportserver.config and added the Authentication Types of RSWindowsNegotiate
and RSWindowsKerberos.
2. Set up the following SPNs.
a) SQL Server Database Engine service (sqlDbSrv2):
setspn -S MSSQLSvc/CER1110:1433 CERDEMO\sqlDbSrv2
setspn -S MSSQLSvc/CER1110.cer.demo.com:1433 CERDEMO\sqlDbSrv2
In the Delegation tab of the account, selected "Trust this user for delegation to any service (Kerberos only)".
b) Account: SharePoint Setup Admin account (spAdmin2)
setspn -S HTTP/CER1110:9999 CERDEMO\spAdmin2
setspn -S HTTP/CER1110.cer.demo.com:9999 CERDEMO\spAdmin2
In the Delegation tab of the account, selected "Trust this user for delegation to any service
(Kerberos only)".
c) Account: SQL Server Reporting Service account (sqlRepSrv2)
setspn -S HTTP/CER1110 CERDEMO\sqlRepSrv2
setspn -S HTTP/CER1110.cer.demo.com CERDEMO\sqlRepSrv2
In the Delegation tab of the account, selected "Trust this user for delegation to any service
(Kerberos only)".
3. Configure the Web Application to use “Negotiate (Kerberos)”.
4. Logged in as SharePoint Administrator to the SharePoint server and opened the top level site in the IE browser.
The Event Viewer logged the login process for the SharePoint Administration account as
Negotiate and not Kerberos.
5. Implemented Kerberos for Oracle database and client.
Able to connect to the Oracle database via Kerberos authentication using SQL Plus.
6. Turn on Windows Firewall.
7. While testing the site's data connection using Kerberos settings, got the error
“Can not convert claims identity to windows token. This may be due to user not logging in using windows credentials.”
Note: The Data Connection for basic authentication still worked.
8. Created a Claims to Windows Token Service account (spC2WTS2).
9. Started the Claims to Windows Token Service.
10. Registered the Claims to Windows Token Service account as a Managed Account.
11. Changed the Claims To Windows Token Service to use the above managed account.
12. Verified that the Claims to Windows Token Service account (spC2WTS2) is automatically added to the WSS_WPG local group on the SharePoint box.
Note: The Reporting Services service account is also a part of the WSS_WPG local group.
13. Added the Claims to Windows Token Service account (spC2WTS2) to the Local Admin Group on the machine having the SharePoint App Server.
14. In the SharePoint box, added the Claims to Windows Token Service account (spC2WTS2) in the Act as part of the operating system policy right.
15. The Claims to Windows Token Service account (spC2WTS2) has the WSS_WPG group configured.
When the C2WTS service was configured to use the managed account Claims to Windows Token Service account (spC2WTS2) earlier, the spC2WTS2 account was automatically
added to the WSS_WPG local group on the SharePoint box. The WSS_WPG group in turn is configured in c2wtshost.exe.config file.
16. Verified that the Reporting Services account is a managed account and part of the WSS_WPG group.
17. Earlier Service Application Pool - SQL Server Reporting Services App Pool service was associated with the SharePoint Admin account.
Changed this to associate the Reporting Service account with the Service Application Pool - SQL Server Reporting Services App Pool service.
18. Changed the delegation of the Reporting Service account to constrained delegation with Protocol Transitioning. This is because we are transitioning from one authentication scheme (Claims) to another (Windows Token).
For this, the delegation has been changed to "Trust this user for delegation to specified services only". Also, selected the sub radio button "Use
any authentication protocol". Selected the Oracle Kerberos service as the service to which this account can present delegated credentials.
Note: The Reporting Service account already had an HTTP SPN.
19. Next, the goal was to make the Claims To Windows Token Service account match the Reporting Service account.
For this, we created a fake SPN for the Claims To Windows Token Service account since the delegation tab was missing.
The delegation has been changed to "Trust this user for delegation to specified services only". Also, selected the sub radio button "Use any
authentication protocol". Selected the Oracle Kerberos service as the service to which this account can present delegated credentials.
20. Restarted the SharePoint server.
21. Tested the data connection with the Kerberos settings again.
Got the error
“ORA-12638: Credential retrieval failed”.
Can anyone tell me what is wrong with this setup?http://www.freeoraclehelp.com/2011/10/kerberos-authentication-for-oracle.html
Problem4: ORA-12638: Credential retrieval failed
Solution: Make sure that SQLNET.KERBEROS5_CC_NAME is set in sqlnet.ora and okinit has been run before attempting to connect to the database.
Do check

Edited by: 889828 on 2011/10/06 2:17 AMThe problem is well decribed in your alert log.....you are using Oracle Managed File names which means you will not be able to duplicate the database as RMAN won't be able to automatically generate new names for the files using the DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT initialization parameters.
Youll have to use the SET NEWNAME command to specify the names of the database files. Done this a few times , and I don't recommend using OMF specifically beacuse of this hassle.
WARNING: OMF is enabled on this database. Creating a physical standby controlfile, when OMF is enabled on the primary database, requires manual RMAN intervention to resolve OMF
datafile pathnames.
NOTE: Please refer to the RMAN documentation for procedures describing how to manually resolve OMF datafile pathnames.
Problem handling is described in

Regards,
MichelHere's your issue
(HOST=localhost.localdomain)
If you are going to use "localhost" at least fake it by adding an entry in your /etc/hosts files
Example ( add to both servers so they can see each other )
192.168.0.20 primary.localdomain primary
192.168.0.21 standby.localdomain standby
Does the "hostname" return localhost.localdomain? Setup something so RMAN has something to connect to.
The "/etc/hosts" file must contain a fully qualified name for the server.
<IP-address> <fully-qualified-machine-name> <machine-name>
localhost.localdomain is 127.0.0.1, you don't want that.
Best Regards

Hi All,
I am looking for some suggestions for rman backup with standby database with datagaurd but no active DG. I wanted to do a rman tablespace backup. but I am stuck at sql 'alter system archive log current' in rman with standby as target. which gives following errors with or without noswitch clause

I am looking for some suggestions for rman backup with standby database with datagaurd but no active DG. I wanted to do a rman tablespace backup. but I am stuck at sql 'alter system archive log current' in rman with standby as target. which gives following errors with or without noswitch clause

Recovery Manager: Release 11.2.0.1.0
Oracle databaes Release 11.2.0.1.0 64 bit

Secondly, do I need to cancel manged recovery while taking rman backups on standby.
I scanned thru MOS but could find solutions for rman with active DG.
Thanks in advance

Rman transportable tablespace ORA-39087: directory name is invalid
Hello all,
We are trying to restore a backup of a tablepace using RMAN's TRANSPORTABLE TABLESPACE command. I created the director in oracle (and it exists on the server), granted privs yet it fails with ORA-39087: directory name is invalid. It seems to fail at the end. Here's my steps, does anyone know how to fix? Thanks in advance for your time!
Dave
CREATE DIRECTORY ARCH_DIR as '/opt/oracle/arch';
GRANT IMP_FULL_DB, EXP_FULL_DB TO SYS, RMAN, SYSTEM;
GRANT READ, WRITE ON DIRECTORY ARCH_DIR TO SYS, RMAN, SYSTEM;
export ORACLE_SID=ADMIN_P1
rman target / catalog rman/rmanpassword@mydb
TRANSPORT TABLESPACE REPORTER
TABLESPACE DESTINATION '/opt/oracle/arch'
AUXILIARY DESTINATION '/opt/oracle/arch'
UNTIL SCN 2144439724
DATAPUMP DIRECTORY ARCH_DIR
DUMP FILE 'reporter.dmp'
IMPORT SCRIPT 'reporter.imp'
EXPORT LOG 'reporter.log';Creating a directory object inside the database does not create anything in the operating system. My guess is that the physical directory, with appropriate permissions, does not exist.

RMAN-00554: initialization of internal recovery manager package failed
Hi Folks,
I am getting the below mentioned error........
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-00554: initialization of internal recovery manager package failed
RMAN-04004: error for recovery catalog database:ORA_28000: The account is locked.
I have also tried unlocking the account & now its UNLOCKED but again i am getting the same message....
Please assist..!
Thanks in advance..!ORA-28000: the account is locked
Cause: The user has entered wrong password consequently for maximum number of times specified by the user"s profile parameter FAILED_LOGIN_ATTEMPTS, or the DBA has locked the account
Action: Wait for PASSWORD_LOCK_TIME or contact DBA
I think you have specified a profile to the user for recovery manager where failed_login_attempts was set. Because of wrong password attempts the account got locked.
Unlocking of account should work.. Check whether you can login to sql*plus ?
Change the profile's FAILED_LOGIN_ATTEMPTS value and try once again. -
Cannot connect to 10g instance from 11g client (ORA-12638)
Hi,
I don't know why I have problems when I connect from a 11g client to a 10g server. I get the error ORA-12638.
However, it works fine doing the same with a 10g client.
Can anybody tell me how to avoid this problem without having to install the 10g client ?
Thanks in advance.
Regards.Hi, user7409638,
To understand the problem, I advice you to enable tracing and have a look at it.
As you may know, ORA-12638 is the problem with the authentication service.
It was just unable to get your credentials.
If you want me finally get the solution, please report it at my system http://1dayotn.blogspot.de/p/question-me_7.html
If you have any questions, ask.

RMAN Failed!(ora-12560)
Hi,everybody.
Now I meet a backup problem.Last night,I run the rman backup script to backup my db.But it failed ,the log infomation is :
* Copyright (c) 1995, 2002, Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved. *
* RMAN-00571: =========================================================== *
* RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS =============== *
* RMAN-00571: =========================================================== *
* RMAN-00554: initialization of internal recovery manager package failed *
* RMAN-04005: error from target database: *
* ORA-12560: TNS: protocol adapter error *
But when I run the "rman target sys/sys nocatlog log 'log path' " this morning .It connects successfull.
And last night ,we aslo did the whole os backup in the same time,but it failed too, it lasted the whole night.The rman backup occurred when the os backup was running.By the way,My harddisk is old .
what is the reason of "ora-12560".
Is the highly disk's I/O leads the "ora-12560"?
I wish someone can help me~
thanks!
Edited by: user8103608 on 2009-3-24 上午4:50Hi,
ORA-12560 indicates that Oracle client does not know what instance to connect to or what TNS alias to use.
In your case you do not use an TNS alias to connect but you use a local connection by setting the ORACLE_SID.
This ORA-12560 could very well be related to system problems already spotted by you in the same window.

All scheduled jobs started suddenly to fail with ORA-01031: insufficient pr
I have a setup of gridcontrol 11g on windows 2008. I've been running successful for weeks until the other day when all my scheduled jobs started to fail with
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges (rman jobs)
ERROR: Invalid username and/or password (sql scripts).
I verified for the accounts being locked, pw correct, expired / grace period, etc.
all good when I try from the command line. running an rman backup from the command line works great, but the same one through the job scheduler fails with ORA-01031.
I've dropped the jobs completely, recreated them again. same thing.
I'm using preferred credentials and dropped and recreated them. same thing.
I don't know where else to look. Only grid control scheduled jobs fail, but all of them do.
I'm using SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS) in my sql.ne (always have).
we use a windows domain server / domain authentication for logging into boxes. I haven't changed any of my passwords.
I am probably looking in the wrong places. Anybody able to help?Hi,
ERROR: Invalid username and/or password (sql scripts).This error message clearly tells that password is incorrect and "insufficient privileges" shows that perhaps you are using SYS user for running the jobs and password for user SYS is incorrect.
If you are specifying passwords in your scripts, i don't think you need to set preferred credentials.
Try following
1) Remove preferred credentials
2) Don't check password of user sys by locally logging in (because if Os authentication is on, even wrong password will allow you loging into the database and you will think that password is correct). Try connecting database using SYS user from a remote machine and check whether it accepts your password and make sure you have same password for your jobs and in sql scripts
3) If still problem, just for test, remove SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS) and try

When I create the dsn in Windows, I can test the connection with no problems. In dreamweaver there are 2 options : 1) use local DSN 2)use DSN on testing server. When I use local DSN, it was fine. Since my machine is the web server, I have to choose option 2).
As I mentioned before, I have set the security options of the Oracle folder accessible to Iusr, Iwam and authenticated users.
