  • 11g CRS and ASM, 10.2.0.4 database, how to set up RMAN

    Hi all, I am fairly green when it comes to RAC so please bear with me. I have a Linux 2 node RAC environment. The servers are lux148 and lux149. The 2 node cluster is running 11g CRS and ASM. The database is 10.2.0.4. It had to be set up this way in order for IBM DataStage to work. The database name is fictrp0. The instances are fictrp01 (lux148) and fictrp02 (lux149). I am trying to register the database with an RMAN catalog. I am under the impression that I need to register the database (fictrp0) not the instances (fictrp01 and fictrp02) with the RMAN catalog. Is this correct? So I log into lux148 and set my environment so the ORACLE_SID=FICTRP0. From the command line I issue the following:
    fictrp0:/u01/app/oracle> rman target / catalog rman102/[email protected]
    The command returns the following:
    Recovery Manager: Release 10.2.0.4.0 - Production on Wed Oct 29 14:05:50 2008
    Copyright (c) 1982, 2007, Oracle. All rights reserved.
    connected to target database (not started)
    connected to recovery catalog database
    Is this normal "connected to target database (not started)"? I was expecting to see a DBID=FICTRP0 for the target. If this is typical, how will RMAN know the ID of the database? Should I be trying to register an instance perhaps such as FICTRP01? If so do I need to register both instances (FICTRP01 and FICTRP02)?
    Bottom line I am very confused on how RAC and RMAN work together. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    You no need to register the instance,You need to register only the database and database only will have DBID

    I'm not using catalog (connecting as nocatalog) Hmm....
    The files are listed in V$DATAFILE and DBA_DATA_FILES but not in an RMAN REPORT SCHEMA ?
    That's curious. V$DATAFILE and RMAN REPORT SCHEMA would both be reading from the controlfile.
    What was the sequence of actions to transport the tablespace ? Have you tried reconnecting with RMAN ?

    Now i am reorganising SAN by scrapping the entire SAN and cretaing new LUN's (It's a must)
    so pleae let me know
    1) how do i take backup of OCR and Voting Disk from existing SAN and how do i restore it in new LUN's after SAN reorganisation
    2) how do i take backup of existing Database's from existing SAN and how do i restore it in new LUN's after SAN reorganisation.
    I will be doing it in Planned downtime only

  • Cloning 11i non split to split configuration with RAC and ASM

    Hello Hussein,
    I just want to ask some ideas on what is the best way to clone our UAT/DEV environment to our PROD environment.
    Right now no RAC and ASM setup for the source system still 9.2.0.5 but the plan is to convert to ASM + 10g RAC.
    Can you please let me know on what is the best way to setup PROD out of our UAT environment?
    Here's my options:
    1. Install a fresh prod system
    2. Convert source system to ASM + RAC before cloning to target - setup as below:
    (Source)
    APPS server - 32bit
    DB server (2 node RAC + ASM) - 32bit
    (Target)
    APPS server - 32bit
    DB server (2 node RAC + ASM) - 64bit
    3. Clone existing target system (non RAC and non ASM)
    copy source APPL directories to target
    Install 64 bit Oracle 10g to the target system
    clone/convert database source (9i 32bit) to database targer (10g 64 bit) using RMAN.
    Install clusterware 11gR2
    Convert database to RAC
    Can you please let me know on what is the best approach to do this? For fresh install it will take some time to apply the current patch level and applying other patches.
    For Option 2, seems a bit complicated to do 32bit - 64 bit cloning on RAC. Appreciated if you can provide doc id for this.
    For Option 3, not sure how smooth the conversion from 32bit to 64bit.
    Appreciate your insights on this.
    Regards,
    jeffrey

    Hi Jeffrey,
    Since you are on 9.2.0.5, I assume you are running Oracle Apps 11i and not R12.
    1. Install a fresh prod systemThis option requires applying all patches (as you mentioned above) plus you will have to convert to ASM/RAC on the source/target instance. I would not recommend this approach since would require extra work/time.
    2. Convert source system to ASM + RAC before cloning to target - setup as below:
    (Source)
    APPS server - 32bit
    DB server (2 node RAC + ASM) - 32bit
    (Target)
    APPS server - 32bit
    DB server (2 node RAC + ASM) - 64bitWhat are the source and target database version?
    As per (Certified RAC Scenarios for E-Business Suite Cloning [ID 783188.1]) this is supported by Rapid Clone. So, in this case you need to convert the source instance to RAC and migrate to ASM then use Rapid Clone to clone the application/database.
    Cloning Oracle Applications Release 11i with Rapid Clone [ID 230672.1] -- 6. Cloning a RAC System
    You will have to convert the target database then from 32-bit to 64-bit.
    3. Clone existing target system (non RAC and non ASM)
    copy source APPL directories to target
    Install 64 bit Oracle 10g to the target system
    clone/convert database source (9i 32bit) to database targer (10g 64 bit) using RMAN.
    Install clusterware 11gR2
    Convert database to RAC Here you will have to convert to RAC/ASM on both the source/target instances -- You are eliminating the patches part in Option 1, but again extra work need to be done to convert the database from 32-bit to 64-bit on the target instance + convert to RAC and migrate to ASM (on both instances).
    Based on the above, I would recommend and suggest you go with Option 2.
    Thanks,
    Hussein

  • Restore to a different node with RMAN and EMC Networker

    Please, really need help :)
    I took hotbackup using RMAN catalog which went to tape. Here is the script for that:
    connect target sys/****@PROD;*
    connect rcvcat rman/***@catalog;*
    *run {*
    allocate channel t1 type 'SBT_TAPE';
    send 'NSR_ENV=(NSR_SERVER="**",NSR_DATA_VOLUME_POOL=Oracle)';*
    *backup database plus archivelog;*
    *release channel t1;*
    My settings include control file autobackup as follows:
    *RMAN> show all;*
    *RMAN configuration parameters are:*
    *CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 10 DAYS;*
    *CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION OFF; # default*
    *CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK;*
    *CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;*

    *CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/data/backups/PROD/hotbkp/snapcf_PROD.f';*
    I am trying to restore this backup that is on tape (EMC Networker) to a different node. I can do this outside of Networker without any problems. However, when I try to get the backup from tape I have this issue:

    Do a list command to see if the controlfile backup is on tape.
    RMAN> list backup of controlfile;
    I suggest you to read the manual of EMC Networker or call EMC on how to restore the database to another node. I am using Veritas Netbackup, it may be similar to EMC Networke for your reference. There are a few things that need to be followed when you restore database to another node:
    1) set DB_ID, which you have done
    2) set NB_CLIENT (in your case NSR_CLIENT) to the primary node from where backup was taken
    3) configure the backup server to allow redirect restore between the two nodes.
    Hope this helps.

  • Simple Problems of oracle 8i using Rman and so.................

    I am Shan here. I am DBA student for oracle 8i. I have a problem with a backup and recoverys article which is Rman. If you can not help for this then please tell me a contact of that person who can help me. If u can then it is on..
    1- I create a user RMAN. I grant him a quota on rman and on rman_temp tablespace; grant him a dba, sysdba, recovery_catalog_owner role. Then I connect it to target. Then I create catalog, then register database then type a command of list (LIST COPY OF DATABASE and LIST BACKUP OF DATABSE) it shows me nothing. ok.
    Then I take a whole backup of a database with the command
    Run {
    Allocate channel c1 type disk;
    Backup
    Format d:\backup\whole_%d_%s_%p.bak
    (Database) ;}
    This command shows me allocating channel and then processing backup Then this commend ended successfully. And it shows me files physically of my desire path. Then I query a command of LIST for showing me my backup details (LIST BACKUP OF DATABSE). But it shows me nothing. No details about my backup. But the file is still physically there at my given path.
    This is the same story with copy command it physically create a file there but do not show it with LIST COPY OF DATABASE command.
    It is not a story of a single Computer I changed it and do the same stuff with the others but the result is same. But I got desire results on one Computer but next day I got another problem with this Computer. I type a command of list backup it shows me the results. It has two backup pieces. I tried to delete them with change command by allocating channel for delete type disk. And then change backupset 605(backup set no) delete;. It shows me that he deleted that file form path but when I query of list backup it show me the same results which it show me before delete. Then I tried to delete second set which is still there I would not allow me to delete that set and give a error that catalog does not have the information about that file but list command show me both pieces. I do manual resync catalog command but no difference on results.
    Then I take another whole backup at another place, and query to get its information but list command does not show the results. It shows me the old results. Then I take a backup of a single data file and query but the result is same.
    I also tried to delete that copy data file by change command but it says that recovery catalog do not have the information about that file.
    2- If we allocate more then one channels for backup on a same drive what will be the behavior of those channels.
    Will them not working parallel. And tell me that it is true that channels will work parallel when they are writhing information on different drives (different drive means that two different hard drives physically).
    Syntax of all commands is writen,I tallied it by book.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<3- What is O stands for in crosscheck command? A stands for available U Stands for Unavailable and O Stands for? In a status column.
    4- Please tell me a single command to delete all tables of a user. (Single command..)
    We are using ORACLE 8i (8.1.7.0.0) Version for practice.

    However the cluster services and ASM services do not come up automatically after server reboot. I have to manually bring it up using ./srvctl command.
    [root@rac2 bin]# ./crs_stat -t
    Name          Type     Target     State     Host
    ora....SM1.asm     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN     rac
    ora....AC.lsnr     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN     rac
    ora.rac.gsd     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN     rac
    ora.rac.ons     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN     rac
    ora.rac.vip     application     ONLINE     ONLINE     rac
    [email protected]     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN rac2
    ora....C2.lsnr     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN     rac2
    ora.rac2.gsd     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN     rac2
    ora.rac2.ons     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN     rac2
    ora.rac2.vip     application     ONLINE     ONLINE     rac2
    Could someone please guide me as to how these services can be brought up automatically upon every reboot?

    Normally all services will start automatically, I am not sure how you installed and configured your RAC.
    Here i am giving all options.
    Option1:-
    Re: CRS auto-start
    Option2:-
    See the below links.
    http://jaffardba.blogspot.com/2009/03/how-to-startup-rac-database-services.html
    http://www.dannorris.com/2009/03/12/start-database-services-automatically-after-instance-startup/
    Option3:-
    if you simply want to start the service upon server reboot, put srvctl
    command in rc.local script under /etc directory.
    Hope this solves your issue.

  • RMAN error when restoring controlfile from tape

    Hi,
    We have a Production database with instance name PROD.
    We use Symantec Netbackup software to backup this database to tape library.
    We want to test some recovery scenarios on a test server. So we want to restore the production backups from Tape to this test server.
    We did the following:
    Cloned the ORACLE Home to the Test Server.
    Changed the db_name parameter to PROD and also set ORACLE_SID to PROD.
    then we connected to RMAN and ran the following command to restore the control files:
    RMAN> run {
    set dbid 4155532403
    set controlfile autobackup format for device type 'sbt_type' to '%F';
    set until time "to_date('16/12/2012:10:13:37','dd/mm/yyyy:hh24:mi:ss')";
    allocate channel t1 device type 'sbt_tape';
    SEND 'NB_ORA_SERV=riysvbkp-001,NB_ORA_CLIENT=lh-erp';
    restore controlfile to '/testerp/dbexec/tmp/cf1.ctl' from autobackup;
    executing command: SET DBID
    database name is "PROD" and DBID is 4155532403

  • Clone multi-node RAC and ASM to single node

    Hi everyone.
    I need clone system with 3 application server and 2 oracle database RAC and ASM to single-node. The operating system is RHEL 5.
    I see some metalink notes, but we can't found nothing. I find notes with multi-node to single-node, but nothing with RAC to non-RAC.
    The eBS version is 11.5.10.2 and database version is 10.2.0.3
    Is possible this clone?
    Thanks very much.

  • Copy controlfiles to standby

    Hello,
    I will create a standby database 11g. For that, I need to copy all files from source server to new standby destination server.
    sql> ALTER DATABASE BEGIN BACKUP;
    -- copy all datafiles, redologs, tempfiles, controlfiles, etc. by o/s from source database server to standby server.
    sql> ALTER DATABASE END BACKUP;In source database, I have these controlfiles:
    sql> select status, name, is_recovery_dest_file from v$controlfile;
    STATUS  NAME                                                         IS_RECOVERY_DEST_FILE
            D:\ORADATA\PROD\OPEXT\CONTROL1_1.CTL                         NO
            D:\ORADATA\PROD\OPEXT\CONTROL2_1.CTL                         NO
            C:\APP\ORACLE\PRODUCT\11.2.0\FLASH_RECOVERY_AREA\OPEXT\CONTR YES
            OLFILE\O1_MF_8F71JQLV_.CTL                                          Do I need to also copy controlfile which is in flash_recovery_area?
    Do I need to replace it in same path in standby server?

    Hi,
    I copy a link where you can see a complete configuration of RMAN for generate the standby database of mode simple.

  • Rman and duplicate database.

    Hi,
    I have some problems with rman and duplicate a database.
    Im trying to duplicate a database on a anoter server than the target, and I have run the command SQL>startup force nomount, on the auxiliary system.
    But I don't know what commands to use i rman.
    Have backup-files on disk at the same server as the auxiliary system is on.
    Any tips and tricks?!
    Thanks in advanced,
    Micke.

    I had the same question a while ago. The location of the files you'll need to restore from are specified in the controlfile. The location referenced in the controlfile will be the location where they were put but RMAN on your "source" server. So for instance, if RMAN drops the backup set in /opt/oracle/dbs/tmp, then your controlfile will point to /opt/oracle/dbs/tmp. (yours probably won't be here, it's just an example). Your controlfile WILL however have to go in the dbs directory, wherever that is.
    What worked for me in the past was placing the backup files on the destination server in /home/oracle/backup_<date> and recreating the file structure based on that of the source server (even if it's just empty dirs) and symlink the last level of the tree to the folder where the files reside.
    For example:
    ln -s /home/oracle/backup_03272008 /opt/oracle/dbs/tmp
    I think there's a more efficient way to do this, but this worked for me.

  • Rman and legato networker

    I have an installation of oracle 8i on AIX, and legato networker 6.1.1.
    I need to link the legato networker 6.1.1 to oracle so that I can trigger rman backups.
    The liblsm.a provided in the installition cd of oracle is for version 5.5 as documented in the installation notes for AIX. What must I do for legato 6.1.1 ?
    Thanks for your help

    A "restored" controlfile can be from either of
    a. An RMAN Backup (ie a backup created by a BACKUP CONTROLFILE command in RMAN or CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP)
    b. A manual / scripted Binary Backup (one created with the SQL command "BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO filename")
    c. A controlfile recreated from a script (eg where the script was generated by the SQL command "BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE ")
    In the first two cases, the restored controlfile also contains information about RMAN Backups made as of upto the point of the controlfile backup . Therefore, even in the absence of an RMAN Catalog, such a controlfile can be used to issue RESTORE DATABASE commands -- it can only restore from backupsets that it knows -- backupsets that were "registered" into the controlfile before the controlfile backup was made.
    In the third case, since the controlfile is recreated afresh, it has NO "knowledge" of database backups (backupsets). A simple "RESTORE DATABASE" cannot be used. Either backupsets must be re-registered into this controlfile with the "CATALOG" command OR an RMAN Catalog must be used (as the Catalog has information about Database Backups and the names of the backupsets containing these backups).

  • Question about RAC and ASM

    Hi,
    We are thinking about build RAC using ASM for OEM database. It'll have two nodes, oracle 10g and Hitachi san with solaris ( or linux ). I've few questions about RAC and ASM.
    1) Do I need to have ASM instance running on each node ? ( most likely yes... but want to make sure )
    2) can I share oracle_home between ASM instance and database instance ? what is the best choice ?
    3) I'm planning to use shared disks for all files, all databases.... what are the pros/cons ?
    4) what should be the installation procedure ? Meaning, first create ASM instance on each node, then install cluster software, build RAC databases...... can someone explain..
    5) I believe RMAN is the only option for backup since I'm using ASM, correct ?
    I'm a newbie to RAC and ASM..
    Thanks,

    2) can I share oracle_home between ASM instance and database instance ? what is the best choice ?in 10g you can, in 11gr2 you cannot. and it might be better to seperate them because it will give you more flexibility with patching.
    3) I'm planning to use shared disks for all files, all databases.... what are the pros/cons ?if you share your oracle_home you won't be able to do rolling updates. so i recommend to keep oracle_homes local.
    4) what should be the installation procedure ? Meaning, first create ASM instance on each node, then install cluster software, build RAC databases...... can someone explain..follow the install guide for your respective version. for 10g you'd install clusterware first, then asm and database is last.
    5) I believe RMAN is the only option for backup since I'm using ASM, correct ?pretty much. you could stop your database and dump the raw devices or use asmcmd/asmftp but rman is definitely the best choice
