RMAN and init.ora

What are init.ora parameters that controls behavior of RMAN in Oracle 10g r2. Thanks, R

Could be the parameters that you set when you configure the backup of a database
alter system set log_archive_format='orcl_%t_%s_%r.arc' scope=spfile;
alter system set db_recovery_file_dest_size=800G scope=both;
alter system set db_recovery_file_dest='+RECOVERY_1' scope=both;
alter system set log_archive_dest_1='LOCATION=USE_DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST';

  • Is SPFILE a replacement or an extension of init.ora ?

    As far as I know there are two parameter files:
    SPFILE and INIT.ORA
    Is the first a replacement or an extenison of the second?
    What are the differences of both?
    Are both required?
    Peter

    Spfile (server parameter file) is a dynamic file. It can be changed while the database is up and running whereas Pfile (or simply Parameter file) is a static file and it order to make changes into it. You would have to close your databasde, make the changes in that file and then bring up the database again to bring those the change or changes into effect.
    So by using the spfile you can make the changes easily (change the parameters easily). You dont have to close your database everytime.
    Simple isnt it ? :)

  • What init.ora parameters needed for RMAN,

    Hi,
    We would like to implement RMAN at our site and like to know what are the parameters required in init.ora for using RMAN, where can I find more info regarding the tuning of these parameters ? Please reply..
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    Sreedhar

    Tammy,
    Thanks for your reply. I didn't post the exact question, let me do it again.
    I need to determine the 'large pool' size to be implemented for using RMAN. (We already have RMAN running).
    I need to know what parameters I need to set in init.ora for large_pool to work efficiently in conjunction with RMAN. How do I calculate the required size.
    I found some material on this, here, but it's confusing.
    By default LARGE POOL = 0, unless PARALLEL_AUTOMATIC_TUNING = TRUE, (in which case LP will be set automatically). Also, set LARGE_POOL_MIN_ALLOC to a non-zero value to enable a minimum allocation with LP.
    When I read document (ID 73079.1) it gets more confusing, as whether to take MULTIBLOCK-READ-COUNT value or db_file_direct_io_count into consideration.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks again, Sreedhar

  • Oracle 10g R2 for Windows ignores init.ora and registry values

    Hello,
    I have a strange issue. I try to set some parameters for Oracle but it doesn't seem to work.
    Here the story:
    I created the DB with the DBCA under windows and set my init parameter at frist creation with 3 important values:
    OS_AUTHENT_PREFIX = ""
    REMOTE_OS_AUTHENT=TRUE
    remote_login_passwordfile=EXCLUSIVE
    this values are in the Registry and the init.ora and the init.ora.7192011143454 in ORAHOME_DB/scripts and pfile
    I've now changed these parameters in the init.ora and registry to:
    OS_AUTHENT_PREFIX = ""
    REMOTE_OS_AUTHENT=FALSE
    remote_login_passwordfile=EXCLUSIVE
    and restarted the whole system - after the restart I checked the value for REMOTE_OS_AUTHENT:
    show parameter remote_os_authent
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    remote_os_authent boolean TRUE
    It keeps true. But why it keeps true why I can't change this value anymore after the DBCA?
    Do I miss something?
    Thanks
    Edited by: ioGLNX on 22.08.2011 04:18

    show parameter spfile;
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    spfile string C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\DB_1\DATABASE\SPFILEMACSCURR.ORA
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    I have created a new spfile from my init.ora with:
    create spfile='C:\oracle\product..toMyInstanceDbs\ioglnx.ora' from pfile='C:\pathToPfile\DBHOME\scripts\init.ora'
    So the problems as it seem to me to instrcut oracle to use my new spfile...in Windows.

  • Does rman backup an init.ora file?

    i read where there is a command to back up an spfile, but didn't see anything about how to backup an init.ora. is this not possible in rman -- do you have to back it up manually? or did i just miss something?
    thanks.

    As the others have indicated, there is NO specific RMAN command to back up the init file. However, as was mentioned, you can simply copy the file from the O/S or to ensure that the init file has the same parameter/values as the spfile, you can issue the following command while in RMAN:
    sql "create pfile=''d:\oracle_backup\initORCL9.ora'' from spfile";

    Before doing this please shutdown your normal database.
    Then startup nomount with specified init.ora file.
    If this will not help you can try to restart windows service.

  • Setting of init.ora file for 500 users

    how to set diffrents parameters in init.ora file
    for 500 user
    (hybrid system)(oltp+dss)
    thanks

    Yeah, it depends and you will need to adjust thoses parameters during the "life" of the database.
    I give you some of my thoughts (that's just thoughts, not a rule => there is no perfect rule) :
    500 users = Unix box i guess so :
    If MTS (dont think u need MTS for 500 users) => SGA = 75% of the RAM of the server
    If NOT MTS (dedicated processes) => SGA = 50% of the RAM
    Say 2GB of RAM on no MTS :
    buffer cache = 900 MB
    shared pool = 100MB to 200 MB
    sort_area_size = 256KB
    something like 50 to 100 RBS (depends on how many users are connected simultaneously)
    for the users which will not do some OLTP operations, you should make few BIG RBS and assign their transactions to them. for thoses users, you probably need a bigger sort_area_size.
    all the tablespaces LOCALLY MANAGED
    backup with RMAN

  • RMAN and archived log

    I have 2 identical Database from day 1 (1 Prod and 1 Dev). Prod db runs in archive mode
    which produces a number of archived logs after a few hours.
    Can I use rman to apply these archived log to the Dev instance to get a copy of the Prod DB? I've copied all *.arc files rom
    Prod back to Oracle\oradata\devdb directory
    1. rman target internal/<passwd> nocatalog
    2. shutdown normal;
    3. startup mount pfile=init.ora
    4. run {
    allocate channel ch1 type disk;
    restore archivelog from logseq 11 until logseq 13;
    recover database;
    I am getting an error saying
    RMAN 06050: archivelog thread 1 sequence 11 is already on disk ....
    RMAN 06177: restore not done, all files readonly, offline or already restored?
    Thanks
    null

    Hi!
    The quick answer is no. But there are several things to know.
    1. Production Database in archive mode.
    2. Develpment database in no archive mode?
    You cannot apply the redo log of (1) to (2) because the SCN (sequence change number) and won't be the same in the both databases. Means more, except if you clone the databases, the control files could be different so remember that redo-logs are binaries, not just a clear-text script.
    Other think to know is that in development you can modify, delete apppend data/tables/datafiles/tablespaces.. how can synchronize this with the production? (this situation can be the same production vs development).
    If you have a standby database you can do something like you wish, but not identical (tell me and I will explain my little knowledge about it ;)
    So you must first know what do you wanna keep in development database, if you just want to have a daily-mirror and can lost production data the best option is to backup production database with RMAN (full, incremental...) in development and use it to replicate another instance every day. Well I have some troubles replicating with RMAN, but people here say it's possible ;)
    If you want to keep the same data, you can use an incremental data export (exp utility) and import modified data to development.
    A10!
    P.S:Sorry for this loooooong text ;)

  • Init.ora file at standby side

    Oracle version: 11.2
    Platform : Solaris 11
    Both Primary and Physical standby DBs are Standalone DBs.
    DB_NAME of Primary = PRIMDB
    DB_UNIQUE_NAME of Primary = PRIMDB
    DB_NAME of Stanby = PRIMDB
    DB_UNIQUE_NAME of Stanby = STDBY_DB
    I am going to create a physical standby DB for my primary DB.
    After taking the backup of primary and FTPing to standby server I am going to run RMAN DUPLICATE . Before that I need to STARTUP NOMOUNT the auxiliary instance
    export ORACLE_SID=STDBY_DB
    sqlplus '/as sysdba'
    startup nomount pfile=initXXXX.ora
    rman target sys/mypasswd@PRIMDBTNS auxiliary /
    run
    allocate channel d1 device type disk;
    duplicate target database for standby dorecover;
    release channel d1;
    I want to know how the init.ora file of standby DB should be named.
    Should it be
    initPRIMDB.ora
    or
    initSTDBY_DB.ora

    The init.ora would be named as per the db_name parameter which in your case will be initPRIMDB.ora.
    A couple of thoughts:
    1) With 11gR2 you can do an active duplicate which does the duplicate on the fly so you don't need to copy files over.
    2) With your naming convention if your standby becomes your primary then the naming convention of STDBY would not make sense.
    Edit - Having seen msebergs's response.  When you start your standby it will by default look for the pfile in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs with the namiing convention init${ORACLE_SID}.ora.  However, mseberg is correct as in his link you explicitly supply the init.ora name in which case it can be anything....ie startup nomount pfile='/xyz';

  • Questions on init.ora file

    Hi,
    I have some questions on init.ora file. While checking the init file in my system i found that it defines a spfile in a non default location.
    The parameter names are like
    1) db1.__db_cache_size
    2) *._kgl_large_heap_warning_threshold
    3) *.sga_target
    what do they indicate? I mean what does 'db1.__' , '*._' and '*.' indicate? There are multiple database in the Windows 2003 server and the db version is 10g R1

    There are strange things in the file you posted, are you sure that's your init.ora ? where did you find it ?
    Moreover, you use "cat" to list the file, but you name "c:\dir" the directory : what is your OS ?
    Furthermore, if you use directories, then you don't need to set utl_file_dir in init.ora, and directories don't show up within parameters, you can see them by

  • How to establish a single init.ora file for 3 node RAC under ASM

    All,
    Our environment is a combination of several different memory sized SUN machines (V880, V490 & 250R).
    Setting up a single init.ora file that encompasses each of the nodes memory into the SGA sizing is our desired setup.
    Though we have established the file, the question is getting each NODE on the RAC to use that single parameter
    file to start its database instead of taking the default init.ora file in the default (asm/dbs) directory.
    As we have performed fail-over testing, upon the restart of instances they have restarted with wrong memory
    definitions that have hung the nodes when it took more memory then what was available and swap space began
    to grow.
    Steps to configure and enable this process is what I am looking for.
    Thanks
    Gerry

    Gerry,
    Here's what we do. Not sure if it is relevant to your situation ...
    (on each node)
    $ cat $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/initrac11d1.ora
    SPFILE='+DATA/rac11d/spfilerac11d.ora'
    (in ASM)
    $ asmcmd
    ASMCMD> ls -la +data/rac11d
    Type Redund Striped Time Sys Name

    Y PARAMETERFILE/
    Y TEMPFILE/
    N spfilerac11d.ora => +DATA/RAC11D/PARAMETERFILE/spfile.267.685170285
    The spfile has all parameters, qualified by node where applicable. For example :
    $ sqlplus / as sysdba
