RMAN -AUXILIARY CHANNEL

Hi,
Please help me to understand the following commands, which I have found in an RMAN script.
allocate auxiliary channel 'dev_0' type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(OB2BARTYPE=Oracle8,OB2APPNAME=JK_P3e,OB2BARHOSTNAME=server1)';
CONFIGURE AUXILIARY CHANNEL 1 DEVICE TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' PARMS env=(nb_ora_serv=mgtserv, nb_ora_client=cervantes)";
regards,
Mathew.

Some RMAN operations, such as DUPLICATE, involve two databases (in addition to the catalog DB).
The second database is called auxiliary. To connect to that database one has to issue something like
connect auxiliary sys/...;To open channel to auxiliary DB (as opposed to the target DB), an auxiliary channel is needed
allocate auxiliary channel aux0 …;Iordan Iotzov

  • Auxiliary channel allocation in TSPITR with RMAN-managed instance

    Hi,
    I'm trying do perform TSPITR with RMAN-managed auxiliary instance. All backups are stored on tape. I need to send MML environment values while allocating auxiliary channel to connect to correct NetWorker server and send other NetWorker parameters.
    Unfortunately I have issues with sending these params - I can't send them from recover RUN block, as auxiliary instance does not exists at the time when I'm starting to execute script. (example from test env using disk channels)

    Thanks,
    Lukasz

    What can be done here, is to CONFIGURE AUXILIARY CHANNEL to set appropriate params for auxiliary instance (without allocating channels manually).
    I just wanted to know, if I can do it just for this one session (without permanent modification). What I can do, is:
    CONFIGURE AUXILIARY CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE sbt_tape PARMS 'mml settings';
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE sbt_tape PARMS 'mml settings';
    CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO sbt_tape;
    RUN
    (new names, auxiliary parameter file)
    RECOVER TABLESPACE ...
    CONFIGURE AUXILIARY CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE sbt_tape CLEAR;
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE sbt_tape CLEAR;
    CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE CLEAR;I just wanted more 'elegant' solution.
    Update:
    Due to bug no. 4768353 there is no possibility to use automatic channel allocation in auxiliary instance. Problem resolved by using own customized auxiliary instance started before recovery process. Channels have been allocated manually using ALLOCATE AUXILIARY CHANNEL c1 DEVICE TYPE sbt... on already running aux.

  • R12 clone with RMAN auxiliary db.

    Hi all,
    We require daily clone for our setup due to testing and other reason. Can we replace only database via RMAN Clone?
    R12 clone with RMAN Auxiliary DB. Find below steps, if I am wrong correct me.
    1.     run autoconfig on apps tier.
    2.     perl <AD_TOP>/bin/admkappsutil.pl and Synchronize appsutil on db tier.
    3.     Run autoconfig on dbtier or adconfig.sh <contextfile>) (which is correct? i am using autoconfig not with contextfile)
    4.     adpreclone.pl dbTier
    5.     adpreclone.pl appsTier
    6.     copy source to target including db and apps tiers.
    7.     perl adcfgclone.pl dbTechStack .
    8.     create duplicate db (auxiliary db) from rman backup.
    9.     sqlplus "/ as sysdba" @adupdlib.sql so
    10.     perl adcfgclone.pl dbconfig <CONTEXT_NAME.xml> (This gives error, I am skipping this step. I have tried with perl adcfgclone.pl database but then also its give error. )
    11.     exec FND_CONC_CLONE.SETUP_CLEAN;
    12.     perl adcfgclone.pl dbTier (if we run perl adcfgclone.pl dbTechStack ,Is this step require?)
    13.     perl adcfgclone.pl appsTier
    please correct my steps.

  • Send and returns to Auxiliary channel strips

    Hi,
    Does any body know how to make the Auxiliary channel strips appear on the list of possible output sends for the individual channel strips?
    I would like to send a number of channels to a single Auxiliary strip but I cannot figure out how to do so.
    Thank you.

    THis is part of the messy way Logic uses Auxes and Busses... At least in my opinion.
    But the answer is, send all the drum tracks to a bus. Either with a 'send' pot, or by assigning the output of the channels to a buss.
    Logic will then create that buss (if it doesn't already exist) AND an AUX with that bus as its input.
    So then, from that new AUX (which has all your drums going to it) you can add a send to another buss.
    And logic will again create that buss (if need be) AND an aux with the new buss as its input. You can put your reverb or other effects on that new AUX and you're done.
    I won't start the whole AUX vs. BUS debate again. Or I'll try not to. But I'm not a fan of the current system. BUT it does work.
    Best idea is to create a template with your busses and auxes set up as you like. I've got 8 auxes fed by submix busses (drums, keys, lead vox, backing vox, gits, orchestra, keys, and leads) and then 8 fx auxes (fed by busses 9-18) with various reverbs, delays, etc on'em.
    Good luck.

  • Purpose of Auxiliary Channels?

    I am having difficulty understanding the purpose of auxiliary channels. I have used busses to run multiple tracks through the same reverb, etc. What's the difference between the two and when do I use one over the other?

    Brian Battles wrote:
    How do you send a track through an Auxiliary channel? I see the only choices are Output or Bus. Methinks I am still misunderstanding how an Aux works.
    Think of Aux channels as "extra channels through which you can route audio." The 3 uses for an Aux channel are:
    1. as an auxiliary channel for Send effects, like reverb and delay
    2. as a bus for audio before the main output bus (for sub-mixes)
    3. as an audio conduit for ReWire-based applications like Ableton Live or Reason
    Taking the first 2 uses, which are arguably the most common, we can do the following:
    1. To use the Aux channel for a Send effect, create an Aux channel, assign a Bus number to it (let's use Bus 1 for this example), then throw in a Send effect in one the Insert slots (reverb for example). On an audio or instrument track, you can assign Bus 1 to one of the Send slots and dial in the amount of the the reverb you want.
    2. To use the Aux as a sub-mix bus, similarly, you create an Aux channel, assign a Bus number (Bus 2 this time, for example) and call up an appropriate bus plugin (such as a compressor or limiter). Then on tracks you want to feed into this "sub-mix" bus, you'd select Bus 2 for the Output.
    As you see, you either send a signal to a bus via the Send slot/knob or via the Output slot.
    As you mention, Aux channels also have Send slots as well as an assignable Output, which makes further routing of sends and outputs possible. This opens up tremendous possibilities for audio routing.
    I can make a track into an Aux track, but how does that differ from making it, say, an Audio track?
    An Aux track can't record audio or play software instruments, so it should be treated as a channel through which you route audio coming from audio or instrument channel strips.
    Hope I was clear and didn't confuse you further. I might tend to over-explain.

  • How to Automate parameters on Auxiliary Channels

    One thing that has been frustrating me is that I can't work out how to set up an automation track for an auxiliary that has, say, a reverb plug in with which I want to control various plugins over time.
    Oh and I'm running Logic Pro 9.
    If anyone could help me out I'd appreciate it!
    Thanks.

    Hi.
    Open Logic's Mixer. Select the Aux channel strips.
    Options : Create Arrange Tracks for selected channel strips
    In the Arrange area you can easily draw in automation for the Aux track/s.

  • Difference between RMAN Allocate channel and Configure Channel

    Hello Sir,
    It is a very small problem that the more I study about RMAN I get more confused that what is the difference between Allocate Channel and Configure Channel.
    The thing I understand is that first we allocate channel and then after we configure it for uses.
    Pl. anybody make me clear if it is wrong and please tell me the right theory.
    Thanks and regards

    Hi,
    As Already Aman and Hemant K Chitale .. described the difference..
    Let me put up one thing one thing Ahead... !!
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL takes the same options used to specify one-time options with the ALLOCATE CHANNEL command. You can configure generic channel settings for a device type, that is, a template that is used for any channels created based on configured settings for that device.
    Example :-
    Note that if you use CONFIGURE CHANNEL to specify generic channel settings for a device, any previous settings are discarded, even if the settings are not in conflict. For example, after the second CONFIGURE CHANNEL command, which specifies only the FORMAT for configured disk channels, the MAXPIECESIZE for the disk channel is returned to its default value:
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK MAXPIECESIZE 2G;
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT /tmp/%U;
    If you manually allocate a channel during a job, then RMAN disregards any configured channel settings. For example, assume that the default device type is SBT, and you execute the following command:
    RUN
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL c1 DEVICE TYPE DISK;
    BACKUP TABLESPACE users;
    Ever thing is in ORACLE Documentation.. . (Pick out the things....)
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28270/rcmconfb.htm
    Study or Go through Slow and Study... you can understnad ever thing...

  • RMAN Configure Channels vs Duplexed Backupsets

    What is the difference between "duplexed backupsets" where I create multiple copies of RMAN backups and "Configuring Specific Channels" where I set channels to backup to two separate disks?  I am using the duplexed backupset feature now to send 2 copies of the RMAN backups to 2 locations.  I was testing the configuration of specific channels but did not see where I waa getting 2 full copies, one on each channel.  For duplexed backupsets I configure:
    CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 2;
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 2;
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT   'disk1/backup_%d_%T_%U',   '/disk2/backup_%d_%T_%U' MAXPIECESIZE 4 G;;
    For channels I set:
    CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL 1 DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT   '/disk1/backup_%d_%T_%U' MAXPIECESIZE 4 G;
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL 2 DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT   '/disk2/backup_%d_%T_%U' MAXPIECESIZE 4 G;
    but I cannot tell if I am getting 2 backups on the 2 channels or id RMAN is just making one backup and splitting it up on the 2 channels.
    If I set the CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 2 on the channels, then I get 2 backups to disk1 and none to disk2.
    What is the proper way to use channels to get 2 full copies of archivlog and database backups one copy on each channel?

    Hello,
    i have searched in metalink for a while and yes it is bug.
    It is described in metalinknote #6316373.8:
    Bug 6316373 - CROSSCHECK identifies some files as EXPIRED
    It is really new (from 20-AUG-2008) .. i applied the patch and now it is working fine :-))
    So everyone who has the same concept.. please apply this patch.

    Regards,

    Hello again;
    Agreed. You have at least two issues.
    Generally I change the SID
    export ORACLE_SID=DEVDB
    Then I start NOMOUNT using an INIT file.
    Then this should be correct
    connected to target database: ORADB (DBID=2542358497, not open)
    connected to auxiliary database: ORADB (not mounted)h2. Later
    I think I was wrong I would like to change my answer. I looked back and found my old notes and things are not as I stated above.
    I used an INIT file ( standby side ) for cloning as follows :
    db_name=RECOVER2
    instance_name=RECOVER2
    control_files=("/u01/app/oracle/oradata/RECOVER2/control01.ctl", "/u01/app/oracle/flash_recovery_area/RECOVER2/control02.ctl")
    db_recovery_file_dest=/u01/app/oracle/flash_recovery_area
    db_recovery_file_dest_size=4070572032
    compatible=11.2.0.0.0
    core_dump_dest='/u01/app/oracle/diag/rdbms/recover2/RECOVER2/cdump'
    db_block_size=8192
    audit_file_dest=/u01/app/oracle/admin/RECOVER2/adump
    undo_tablespace=UNDOTBS1
    undo_management = AUTO
    undo_retention=10800So for the duplicate I don't set DB_UNIQUE_NAME
    I Backed up the target database as shown here with the ‘backup current controlfile for standby format’ command:
    RMAN RUN {
    allocate channel d1 type disk;
    backup format '/u01/backups/RECOVER2/df_t%t_s%s_p%p' database;
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    backup format '/u01/backups/RECOVER2/al_t%t_s%s_p%p' archivelog all;
    backup current controlfile for standby format '/u01/backups/RECOVER2/sb_t%t_s%s_p%p';
    release channel d1;
    }I did a startup the standby as follows : ( Notice you are correct about the SID and I was incorrect )
    export ORACLE_SID=RECOVER2
    /home/oracle:SRECOVER2 >sysplus "/ as sysdba"
    Connected to an idle instance.
    SQL> startup nomount pfile='/u01/app/oracle/admin/RECOVER2/pfile/initRECOVER2.ora';I started RMAN like this :
    /home/oracle:SRECOVER2 >export ORACLE_SID=RECOVER2
    rman target sys/password@recover2 auxiliary /
    Recovery Manager: Release 11.2.0.1.0 - Production on Fri Sep 10 13:35:29 2010

    connected to target database: RECOVER2 (DBID=3806912436)
    connected to auxiliary database: RECOVER2 (not mounted)So you connect to the Primary, but the auxiliary should show "not mounted"
    Finally I issue the duplicate command
    RMAN> run {
    2> allocate channel C1 device type disk;
    3> allocate auxiliary channel C2 device type disk;
    4> duplicate target database for standby nofilenamecheck;
    5> }Best Regards

    Hi ,
    I feel you are using ASM but still check the below details:
    Cause
    Production and Auxiliary have same directory structure and are running on two different machines. RMAN must be told not check that the target datafiles are sharing the same names as the duplicated files being created. Otherwise, the following errors will be returned:
    RMAN-05001: auxiliary filename /qmaxnt/u04/qmaxntorafiles/table/QMAXAD08_03.dbf
    conflicts with a file used by the target database
    RMAN-05001: auxiliary filename /qmaxnt/u04/qmaxntorafiles/table/QMAXAD08_02.dbf
    Solution
    To implement the solution, please use nofilenamecheck in syntax as follows:
    1. Connect to Target, auxiliary, and rman catalog and
    2. use script as
    run{
    set until time "to_date('2005/09/17 14:00:00','yyyy/mm/dd HH24:MI:SS')";
    allocate auxiliary channel aux1 type 'sbt_tape';
    allocate auxiliary channel aux2 type 'sbt_tape';
    duplicate target database for standby dorecover nofilenamecheck;
    Make sure to use auxiliary type of channel so RMAN restore take place at auxiliary database.
    Thanks,
    Rafi.

  • RMAN -06100: no channel to restore a backup or copy of datafile 51

    Oracle 10.2.0.4
    I am attempting to duplicate a database from a full backup that was written to tape. I connect to a catalog, the target, and an auxilliary database. I allocate channels for disk and allocate auxiliary channels. For testing purposes I am trying to restore one data file from tape to disk but get RMAN-06100.

    Hello,
    I think there is something wrong with the ")" in the listener.ora : the second SID_DESC is not part of the SID_LIST.
    Instead of
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
    (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =

    (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1)

    Hello;
    Script has to be run from auxiliary.
    Great details, but what I don't see is how you connect in RMAN.
    Example
    Start RMAN
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target=sys/@recover2 auxiliary=sys/@reclone
    Recovery Manager: Release 11.2.0.2.0 - Production on Wed Feb 22 14:50:31 2012
    Copyright (c) 1982, 2009, Oracle and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved.
    connected to target database: RECOVER2 (DBID=3806912436)
    connected to auxiliary database: RECLONE (not mounted)Nothing in your tnsnames or listener jumps out as wrong. I copied them into my text editor and compared against my working ones.
    Generally for active duplication I start the future standby on a pfile NOMOUNT.
    Auxiliary Instance Initialization Parameters Needed :
    DB_NAME
    CONTROL_FILES
    DB_BLOCK_SIZE
    ( add extra parameters like DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT instead of using the SET command - clean up standby spfile right after duplication )
    Then start RMAN and finally run a single line duplication command.
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target=sys/@primary auxiliary=sys/@standby
    RMAN>duplicate target database for standby from active database NOFILENAMECHECK;Best Regards
