RMAN Backup Plan

Hello -
I'm running Oracle 8.1.7
I'm developing an online backup strategy using RMAN. I want to backup the tablespaces, then backup the archived logs.
Here is a script that I am using:
rm /backups/old/*
mv /backups/* /backups/old
rman target uname/pwd nocatalog <<EOF
allocate channel for maintenance type disk;
crosscheck backup;
delete expired backupset;
release channel;
run {
allocate channel d1 type disk;
sql 'alter system switch logfile';
backup incremental level = 0
filesperset = 3
format '/backups/indx_%d_%U.bak'
tablespace indx; }
run {
allocate channel d1 type disk;
backup incremental level = 0
filesperset = 3
format '/backups/data_%d_%U.bak'
tablespace data; }
run {
allocate channel d1 type disk;
backup incremental level = 0
filesperset = 3
format '/backups/system_%d_%U.bak'
tablespace system; }
run {
allocate channel d1 type disk;
backup
format '/backups/arch_%d_%U.bak'
(archivelog all delete input);
Does this appear to be a good backup stragegy using RMAN?
Thanks.

I'm taking a backup of the controlfile binary, but what if my datafile paths will be different on the restoration server?
Say if I backup my entire database and I specify like 3 files per set. After I copy all of these backup set files to the restoration server, what are the steps to recovery?
Do I perform the following
1. startup mount pfile = 'initsomedb.ora'
2. startup RMAN as follows:
rman> run {allocate channel d1 type disk;
then I am lost syntactically...
Do I specify:
   restore controlfile to 'some_path'
   from 'path of backup set with controlfile'
Thanks for any insight.  I'm just finding it hard finding any documention or example for what I am trying to accomplish with RMAN 8i.

  • RMAN Backup Plan Question

    Hello -
    If I'm backing up specific datafiles (say 3 datafiles in one RMAN script) and I have 4 of these scripts - so a total of 12 files being backup up, should I have a separate script that just backs up all of the archived log files? Or should I include a Backup Archivelog all command in each specific script?

    backup each datafile once according to your backup shedule there is no advantage of backup each data file foure times it conversly decrade or slow down your backup working. there is no need to include archive logs in your scripts. I think you should create seprate sript for archived logs.

  • Creating a standbay database from an rman backup

    hi,
    I have a situation that a standby database has a large gap in archive log files, the primary server does not now have those files. I understand that you can create a standby from an rman backup of the primary but all reading I have done shows thatn you have to have a recovery catalog to carry this out. The system I am on does not have such a catalog so is there any other way to do this?
    regards
    Alan

    Requirement 'You must have a recovery catalog in a standby requirement' is a little bit misleading. In fact you can do what you want : creating a standby from RMAN backups without having a recovery catalog. 'Duplicate target database for standby' does not require a connection to a recovery catalog.
    You need mandatorily a recovery catalog, when you plan to take backups from the standby later on in order to free the primary from this task. The reason for that is it's not possible to transfer backup records from the standby controlfiles to the primary ones directly. After a backup on the standby you resync the catalog with the standby controlfile. Then you connect to the catalog and the primary,resync again and have actual backup informations in the primary controlfiles. When there's a media recovery problem, you easily can restore/recover the primary.

  • Rman backup

    Hi,
    I want to take one time RMAN backup with indefinite retention policy. what is the best way. I want to recover the database whenever I want may be after year time.
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1;
    or
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 500 days;
    or
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO NONE;
    Regards,

    Hi ,
    Thanks for your reply. I decided to go as below.
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '${BACKUP_DIR}/${THEDBNAME}/cf_%d_%F';
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 2;
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON;
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET PARALLELISM 6;
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK MAXPIECESIZE = 20G;
    This way I will have 2 backup and I will stop to take backup from RMAN. If it requires in future I can restore any of them.
    Regards,
    DBAI am confused about what you are trying to achieve here, and without knowing that, we really can't give any good advice.
    What do you mean by "I will stop to take backup from RMAN" ?
    It's sounding like you are planning on only taking one or two backups and never backing up again ..... ?
    Are you running in archive log mode? Are you taking regular full and/or incremental backups? What are you trying to achieve by holding one backup for such a long period of time? How do you think this is better than the usual practice of taking a full backup once every week or so and incremental backups daily, with a retention period specified in terms of recovery window (time) instead of redundancy (number of backups)?
    You may have some very good reasons, or simply haven't described your intent very well, but right now it sounds like you are about to head down the road to database recovery hell.

    Dear Pierre F.;
    Actually, I just added in my backup plan to have daily backup through RMAN, instead of COLD backup.
    I have planned to take cold backup once a week. here is the side of data:
    *** datafile 410
    *** size of database : 86 GM
    *** relog files size : 250MB
    *** daily archive logs are : 250MB * 4(number of files) = 1GM aprox.
    yes, time constraint is there; just because of the size of database. and we r going for 24/7
    Is this script going to run only one per week ?
    Ans: no I this was level 0 backup; i will take level 1 incremental backup with same script daily too.
    Do you have any other RMAN script ?
    ANS: no, I will modify same script for incremental.
    after local copy of backup all backup files (RMAN) will be copy over network to backup server or we can install LTO tape device to copy directly from database server.
    kindly advise me I am new in RMAN.
    regards;

  • Can RMAN backup and export datapump executed at the same time?

    Hello,
    I have several databases that I backup using RMAN and export datapump everynight starting at 6PM and end at Midnight. The backup maintenance window doesn't give me enough time for each database to run at different time. I am using crontab to schedule my backups. Since I have so many databases that need to be backed up between 6PM - Midnight, some of the export and RMAN backup scripts will execute almost at the same time. My question is can my export data pump and RMAN backup scripts run at the same time?
    Thank you in advance.
    John

    Needs must. If you don't run expdp parallel then it doesn't use that much. If it was really killing the system then look into setting up a Resource plan that knocks that user down but this is a big step.
    I woud better look into using Rman
    system incrementals, and block change tracking, to minimize your RMAN time.
    Regards
    If your shop needs to do both simultaneously then go for it.
    Chris.
    PS : One of my shops has maybe 20-30 rmans and pumps all kicking off some simultaneous, some not, from 0000 to 0130. No complaints from users and no problems either. Go for it.

  • RMAN backup on the physical standby database.

    Hello,
    11.2.0.3 EE database. Is it a requirement to open the database in read only mode in order to take a hot backup?
    SQL>ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL;
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE OPEN READ ONLY;
    I've initiated a rman backup without opening the db in read only and the following output is so far:
    RMAN> backup format '/dbstor2/LTS/LTS_rman/%d_set%s_piece%p_%T_%U' check logical database plus archivelog;
    Starting backup at 15-OCT-12
    using target database control file instead of recovery catalog
    allocated channel: ORA_DISK_1
    channel ORA_DISK_1: SID=603 device type=DISK
    specification does not match any archived log in the repository
    backup cancelled because there are no files to backup
    I plan on taking this backup and using it to refresh our Dev and QA dbs. Do you see any issues with taking a backup without opening the db in ready only mode?
    -SteveV

    No we are not using Active Dataguard. An issue I am investigating is why can't I perform an archivelog backup from the standby?
    RMAN> backup archivelog all format '/dbstor2/LTS/LTS_rman/arc.rman.bak';
    Starting backup at 15-OCT-12
    using target database control file instead of recovery catalog

    channel ORA_DISK_1: SID=603 device type=DISK
    specification does not match any archived log in the repository
    backup cancelled because there are no files to backup
    Finished backup at 15-OCT-12

  • RMAN backup on RAC

    Hi,
    DB=10.2.0.4 OS=RHL (RAC with 2 nodes db01,db02). Following are the types of automated RMAN backups taken on db01.
    - OCR
    - Voting Disk
    - Talespaces Snapshot
    - Archivelog (every hour)
    - Backup Incremental level 0 (SUNDAY)
    -- backup incrementa level 1 (Mon-SAT)
    - Autobackup of Control file and SPFILE (CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON)
    Two main questions please. First, are these backups/backup types are enough FOR FULL RESTORE when talking about RMAN backup on RAC environment with 2 nodes? If not please suggest what else I need to backup?
    Secondly, backup home location is /rman which I can see on db01 ONLY. This /rman directory I cannot see on db02. My question is that In case of db02 failure can I restore from this /rman directory? or do I need to automate backup schedules also on db02 separately?

    Hi,
    THanks alot for your feedback. Makes my life easier :) . But actually I started studying this all subject because of the following error message in the log file. I found out about this error that doesn't seem to harm. Just wait for the job to finish or it will sort out automatically. Here are the lines from the log file.
    Fehler in Backuplogs gefunden:/oracle/log/fcp11-backup-2300.log: RMAN-00571:

    Node 1
    RMAN> show all;
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/oracle/product/10.2.0/db/dbs/snapcf_fp11.f'; # default
    Node 2
    RMAN> show all;
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/oracle/product/10.2.0/db/dbs/snapcf_fp12.f'; # default
    Thing which I just noticed regarding the above RMAN error is that snapcf_fp11.f can be seen on the Node 1 on todays date but snapcf_fp12.f was only on 10th jan.
    [oracle@db01dbs]$ ls -lrth
    -rw-r----- 1 oracle oinstall  20M Feb 27 15:10 snapcf_fcp11.f
    [oracle@db02dbs]$ ls -lrth
    -rw-r----- 1 oracle oinstall  20M Jan 10 13:28 snapcf_fcp12.fTHe few lines from the book which I mentioned above are: (Though you might not need to read those lines):
    "You need to move the snapshot control file to a shared location if you plan to run backups from more than one node. If you do not move the snapshot control file to a shared file system such as OCFS or an ASM disk group, then you must make sure that the local destination is identical on all nodes."
    My question is of course, how to sort out the above log file error. Becuse in our case, backups are run only from one node, and snaphost control file is not being moved to ASM disk groups. Local destination is also same on both the Nodes, isn't it (with different names). Why on Node 2 last snapshot was taken on 10th jan while on Node 1 it is todays date which seems fine.
    Control file and SPFILE which I noticed are stored on ASM disk groups also, so being shared between the two Nodes.
    (Sanme names/same location for control file and SPFILE on Node 1 and Node 2)
    Control file:

    +DATA1/fp1/controlfile/current.441.652869697
    SPFILE:
    +DATA1/fp1/spfilefcp1.oraPlease suggest.

  • Automating RMAN backup jobs in Windows

    First off: THANK YOU to Ahmer Mansoor, EdStevens, and jgarry for helping me get my RMAN backup jobs up and running in this thread: Oracle 10g on Windows Server off-line database backup - a few questions You were a big help and provided very valuable advice!
    Now I'd like to automate it. My plan is below - please let me know what you think. The four files will be run in this order.

    I guess, 8i(817) is more comportable with 10g and it should work.
    Have a try with your test database and also cross check the metrix with different version in the Metalink.

    Good news Maran,
    I just come across of the following note which explains the RMAN compatibility between 8 - 10g versions.
    RMAN Compatibility Oracle8i 8.1.7.4 - Oracle10g 10.1.0.4
    Doc ID: Note:307022.1
    In case, if you dont have access to metalink, the punch line from the note is :
    SUMMARY
    =======
    Is best practice to use 'rule of thumb'. Always used the target database RMAN executable and the latest release of Oracle for your recovery catalog.
    If you are going to use a lower version RMAN executable to backup higher version databases remember you are restricted to only the features available
    in the database your using. But the executable you are using must be able to handle the feature or configuration you are using. Case and point the
    RMAN-06466 error above where in 9.0.1 there is no concept of "AS BACKUPSET".
    Because configure commands were executed some options in the controlfile were not understood when parsed by the lower version RMAN.

  • RMAN Backup implementation

    Hi All,
    We are planning to implement the rman backup for the 10.2.0.4,10.2.0.5,11.1.0.7 and 11.2.0.2 databases (around 500 databases).For that i need all your advice for the below queries
    1) Which database version is best for the recovery catalog database ?
    2) How many databases we can register in the recovery catalog database ? Is there any limitation ?
    3) We are planning to implement incremental backup for some databases . For that what is the best solution for this ? we are concerning
    about the retention period ..?
    4) what is the best backup method for huge size databases OLTP( 1TB , 2TB ) and OLAP databases ?

  • Monthly Backup Plan using Incremental Backups

    I would like to have a monthly backup plan as explained in the oracle documentation:
    First Friday of the month: Full Backup (Incremental Level 0)
    Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: Incremental Level 1
    2nd, 3rd, 4th Friday: Cumulative Incremental Backups Level 1
    As I understand is that the 4th cumulative incremental backup will contain all the changes from the full backup.
    Is there any way so that the 4th friday backup will contain only the changes since the 3rd Friday and so on?

    Thank you for advice.
    I understand Oracle has "backup level 0-4"
    I checked the document
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/backup.112/e10643/rcmsynta007.htm#i78895
    INCREMENTAL LEVEL integer
    Copies only those data blocks that have changed since the last incremental integer backup, where integer is 0 or 1
    I understand Oracle has only level 0 and 1
    I tested

    why!!
    Since there is no documentation of any level beyond 1, I can only guess that it is for backward compatibility.

  • RMAN backup using OSB too slow

    Hi all,
    We are exploring Oracle Secure Backup in our environment as legato networker alternative. But RMAN backup in OSB is very slow due to sbt wait event(sbtwrite2). it can backup 5GB/hour. We think this not normal behavior. we have checked network throughput between media server and client server. It can send 50 GB data by 30 min.Could you please help us to resolve the problem.
    Thanks,

    Hello,
    What OS do you use? This is a Windows OS or UNIX ? Above all, we need more information about the Hardware and the others plans that ran in this environment.It can be also competition from other jobs.
